OPEN FIRE SEASON FOR
KAIPARA DISTRICT
Principal Rural Fire Officer Kevin Ihaka today declared
the Whangarei and Kaipara Districts to have an “Open”
fire season.
This means that residents can now light fires on the open
air without a permit providing they comply with all North-
land Regional Council rules for smoke discharge and take
due care with the fire.
Residents are reminded that they will he held liable for the
cost of putting out an escaped fire and for the damage it
may cause. This can easily be hundreds of thousands of
dollars.
Mr Ihaka advises that most fires escape when people un-
derestimate the risk, particularly changing weather condi-
tions. “High winds are the leading cause of fires getting
out of hand.”
The restricted season has been unusually long this year
due to prolonged dry spells and patchy sporadic rain. Mr
Ihaka would like to thank the residents of Whangarei and
Kaipara for their co-operation and understanding during
this period. “Despite the dry conditions we have had very
few problems with compliance; people have been very
understanding of the risk and have been very responsible
with fire.”
Anyone wanting advice should check the website
www.havingafire.org.nz
for tips and updates.

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL
Principal’s Comment
We have reached the end of a long and
productive term. Highlights for stu-
dents over the last month have included
the magnificent talent on show at the
Olla Podriga show, the powerful Kapa
Haka performances, the Japanese ex-
change visit, challenging DOE expedi-
tions, the inaugural Walk For Life at
the Maungaturoto Country Club and
the National Young Leaders’ Day in
Auckland.
In Term Two we will be trialling some
changes to our bell times and this will
see students go straight to period 1 at
the beginning of the day. Whanau time
will be directly after period 2 at 10:50
and this will be followed by interval.
The aim of this trial is to focus on
learning from the outset of the day and
enable us to complete the required ad-
ministration tasks later. Senior students
will assist with leading activities during
Whanau Time in line with The OTA
Way (Our Safety, Total Respect, Al-
ways Learning).
As an indicator of where students have
been tracking in Term One a letter was
sent out which indicates either ‘no con-
cerns’, ‘some improvement needed’ or
‘causing concern’ for the selected OTA
Way indicators. If any concerns have
been highlighted though this letter
please speak to your child(ren) about
making improvements in these areas in
order to optimise their chances of
achieving to their potential at school.
The uniform dress code was included
in the newsletter to assist you with sup-
porting the school in this area; please
note that the only school shoes allowed
are black, polishable lace up shoes.
Facial piercings are also not allowed;
they should be removed completely
rather than be covered with a plaster.
I encourage you to contact your
child’s Dean or Whanau Teacher
via e mail or phone early in Term
2 to discuss any concerns which
have been highlighted. E mail
contacts are included in the news-
letter. It is great to see that there
are ‘no concerns’ for many stu-
dents who have been working
well to achieve to their potential.
Please note the following important
dates in Term Two:
Wednesday 14th May: Parent – Student
- Teacher Conferences with Academic
Counsellors (Years 11 – 13 students);
Monday 19th – 23rd May: Senior prac-
tical exam week; Monday 26th – Fri-
day 30th May: Senior exam week;
Tuesday 6th June (day after Queen’s
Birthday): Staff Only day; Thursday
19th June: Reports posted to families;
Thursday 26th June: Parent Teacher
Interviews
I wish you a wonderful relaxing break
over these holidays.
~Rachel Clothier-Simmonds Principal
Level 2 Physical Education travel to
Leigh
On Wednesday the 12th of March, the
level 2 Physical Education class was
lucky enough to travel to Leigh and
snorkel around the amazing Goat Is-
land as part of one of our internal as-
sessments. This was an activity which
we were to participate in and write a
report about the risks involved in this
activity and how we can prevent them
by using risk management strategies.
Our entire class was excited about go-
ing to Goat Island because they had
heard about the amazing wildlife that
we would see. It was a beautiful sunny
day which was perfect for snorkelling.
We geared up in our wetsuits, snorkels,
masks and flippers and headed down to
the beach. While we were in the water
we saw an eagle ray, a family of cray-
fish, various types of fish including
Snapper, Blue Maomao and Spattier.
We would like to thank Mrs Perkinson,
Mrs Gardener, Wuzz, Mrs Clist and
Miss Parkinson for their help over the
last term.
KIDS LIT Quiz 2014
On Tuesday March 25 two teams from
Otamatea High School competed in the
2014 Northern Regional Kids’ Lit Quiz
Competition
at
Kerikeri
Primary
School. Team 1 consisted of Year 8
students Mahina Henry-Campbell and
Georgia Denton who both competed
last year and new-
comers Emma Mil-
lard and Brigette
Hosford. Team 2
consisted of Year 7
students
Maggie
Hames,
Katrina
Poyner, Kayla-Rose
Reid and Oshani
Mudannayaka. Both
teams competed well and had good
results with Team 2 winning one of the
competition rounds. The questions
were challenging and certainly covered
a wide range of literature from nursery
rhymes to fairy tales to ancient myths
and legends and right up to the latest
published works. The winning team
came from Whangarei Intermediate
School, they will compete in the Na-
tional Finals in Wellington in June. The
International Finals will be held in
Cornwall England in July. Our teams
enjoyed their day and would like to
thank the Paparoa Lions Club for the
funds for the entry fee.

MOTHER’S DAY
Sunday 11th May
Erma Bombeck wrote “When God was
creating mothers, on His sixth day of
"overtime" the angel said. "You're
doing a lot of fiddling around on this
one." God replied, "Have you read the
specs on this order? She has to be com-
pletely washable, but not plastic. Have
180 moveable parts… all replaceable.
Run on black coffee and leftovers.
Have a lap that disappears when she
stands up. A kiss that can cure anything
from a broken leg to a disappointed
love affair. And six pairs of hands."”
The angel shook her head slowly and
said. "Six pairs of hands.... no way."
God remarked, "and the challenging bit
is the three pairs of eyes that mothers
need. One pair that sees through closed
doors when she asks, 'What are you
kids doing in there?' when she already
knows. Another here in the back of her
head that sees what she shouldn't but
what she has to know, and of course the
ones here in front that can look at a
child when he goofs up and say. 'I un-
derstand and I love you' without so
much
as
uttering
a
word."
The angel said, “Lord, take a break.”
"I can't," said God, "I'm so close to cre-
ating something so close to myself.
Already I have one who heals herself
when she is sick...can feed a family of
six on one pound of mince beef...and
can get a nine year old to stand under a
shower."
Touching her the angel said, "She's too
soft! “But tough!" God replied. "You
can imagine what this mother can do or
endure." Can it think?" Not only can it
think, but it can reason and compro-
mise," God said. The angel bent over
and ran her finger across the cheek.
“There's a leak!" It's not a leak," said
the Lord, "It's a tear." What's it for? It's
for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain,
loneliness, and pride." You are a geni-
us, " said the angel.
Just a columnist’s fictional story, but
well worth pondering. Thanks, Mum!

Friday 16th May. U7's, U9's and U11's
teams from Maungaturoto,

playing, so it will be a very
busy
evening!
Matches
start at 6pm, so come along
to cheer on the boys and
girls!
Rugby – senior
A huge crowd gathered at
our Sports Complex on the
Thursday evening before
Easter to watch our Hawks
take on Old Boys Marist.
Unfortunately, the positive
support in the stands didn't
translate into a win on the
field - the Reserves lost 7 -
25 and the Premiers went
down 12 – 20.

Level 3 Geography Trip- Omaha
On Thursday the 13th of March, the
Level 3 Geography class travelled to
the Omaha Sandspit as part of our first
internal assessment. The field trip in-
volved us mapping out the area and
studying some of the features of the
Sandspit, under the guidance of our
sage, Mr. Maclennan. We were specifi-
cally interested in the natural processes
that occur in the area, such as erosion,
wave refraction, and long-shore drift,
and how these have sculpted the natu-
ral environment of Omaha. All in all
the trip was very beneficial, and it was
topped off with a nice shared lunch by
the beach, where all our culinary skills
came into practice as we battled for the
distinction of being best cook.

Olla Podriga – School Talent Contest
and Variety Night
Otamatea's school singing contest, Olla
Podriga, came back with a bang. The
evening's entertainment boasted a
whole range of musical styles, from
country rockers to modern Rhythm and
Blues, and featured 11 of our students
performing, with John Clist doing a
brilliant job as MC. Each con-
testant sang their chosen song
along to the music provided by
a stellar backing band, and the
standard of all was very high.
The judges for the competition
were Haydn Hutching, Paddy
Hallissey, and Sue Gray, and
they certainly had their work
cut out for them in determining
who the winner was for the
night. It was fitting to have
Haydn in the judging seat this
year for the first time as Olla
Podriga was his original con-
cept and he played in the band,
hosted and organised many Olla Podri-
ga shows over years. In the end, it was
Jasmine Sampson who came out on
top, singing Rihanna’s song, ‘Stay’,
while Elizabeth Harris and Michaela
Kemp placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
The evening also featured performanc-
es by pianist, Monica Jacques, singer-
songwriter, Emma Rankin, and The
Vybes.
All in all, the evening was very suc-
cessful, there was a great turn-out and
certainly plenty of talent on display. A
huge congratulations must be extended
to all the contestants, and a big thank
you to everyone involved in its organi-
sation.
A real highlight of the evening for the
contestants and audience was the fact
that we had a live backing band; a real
rarity in today’s day and age where
backing tracks are readily available.
This band was made up of a combina-
tion of students and professional musi-
cians – James Finlay and Cameron Gill
made up the student component of the
band, providing rhythm and lead guitar
parts. James also played banjo. Profes-
sional musicians Charlie Wynyard
(drums) and Martin Rylev (bass)
formed the rhythm section. Barry Cor-
lett (piano and synthesizers) and May
Seager (vocals) added to the profes-
sional line-up. This was a real experi-
ence for the contestants to work with a
professional backing band in a similar
way to New Zealand Idol. It provided
them with a true concert performance
atmosphere.
OHS Shooting Team
On Saturday April 5th the Otamatea
High School clay shooting team trav-
elled to Kaeo in the far north for the
first of five competition shoots run by
Northland fish & game. The team con-
sisted of Bailey Hamlin, Jake Hamlin,
Ashton Coates, Quynten McCarroll,
Michael Parker, & Jamie Manuel. The
team shot well scoring over 350 out of
a possible 475. Pictured: The Otamatea
shooting team in their new Carters T
shirts sponsored by Mike Schimanski
and the team at Carters, who also gave
each student a carry bag, and hat. A
huge thank you to Carters who recog-
nise the potential of our students and
who have gone out of their way to
show their support to their local school.
Walk for Life
This year’s Relay for Life had a little
twist for the team OTA Kids. Thanks
to Cyclone Luci the team could not join
the Relay for Life event in Whangarei,
but nevertheless they decided to do it
right here – at Maungaturoto Country
Club. The event was called Walk for
Life and was held on Friday 4th April
5pm – Saturday 5th April 5pm. More
than twenty of Otamatea High School’s
students along with a few staff and
members of the community joined the
24-hour walk in support of Cancer So-
ciety in New Zealand.
Sophia Butler, the school’s Community
Prefect says it was hard, but a lot of fun
doing it. Although the weather wasn’t
the best, the students played soccer and
rugby while resting, there was music
and a lot of spirit. The candle ceremo-
ny at 8pm was very beautiful and the
students had fun doing a pyjama walk
at midnight.
The students calculated that they have
walked altogether almost the full length
of New Zealand. The most impressive
performance was made by Shelby Ata,
Otamatea High School’s Head Girl,
who broke the record, walking 172 laps
at 500m each.
The students want to thank Mr Fletch-
er, Mrs Parsons, Ross and Jenni-May
Millar, Nikki Donaldson and Kay Rob-
inson for their full support and also to

CUBS & SCOUTS
Patrol leaders and assistant leaders
from our Scout Troop spent a weekend
recently at the Ruakaka Scout Den on a
leadership course. Our Scouts have
now attended several courses and
workshops in a last few months, these
are a wonderful opportunity for our
children to develop skills and personal
qualities. Many thanks to the Group
Leaders and committee members who
organise these activities for the chil-
dren.
Thank you to the Kathmandu Founda-
tion who recently granted our Scout
Troop heavily discounted pricing
which we have used to purchase back
packs for when the children go on
tramps.
To commemorate 100 years since the
start of World War One, the Hakaru
RSA is putting on a Days of Thunder
event. This will be held at the RSA
grounds on the 3rd and 4th of May. Our
Scouts & Cubs will be providing food
and drink stalls as a fundraiser for our
Troop, so please bring along a few dol-
lars!
Other upcoming events for the Kai-
waka/Mangawhai Troop include partic-
ipating in a three day camp at Tangihua
Lodge and joining other Lower North
Scout Troops for a fun mudslide day at
Warkworth.
Our Troop has so many children on the
waiting list that we are wanting to open
another session to accommodate them.
This will be on a Tuesday, 5.30 - 7pm
at the Hakaru Den and we are looking
at doing sessions for Cubs, Keas and
Scouts. But we need help! If you can
assist us by offering to be a patrol lead-
er, an assistant leader or just any sup-
port at all, please contact Bruce Fergu-
son on 4312 542 or 021 431254.
KAIWAKA LIBRARY
By the time you read this, the Large
Print and Audio book swap in Whanga-
rei will be done and dusted, and a new
selection of books on our shelves for
you to choose from. Many thanks to
everyone who took part, it’s a lot of
work but made easier working as a
team.
Recently I’ve read The Making of Us,
by Lisa Jewell. This is the story of
three young people who appear to lead
unconnected lives. Lydia is a wealthy
and successful sci-
entist, who's life
has been scarred
by
a
traumatic
childhood. Dean is
a young man with
no apparent future,
suddenly
forced
into responsibility
when his girlfriend
dies while giving
birth to their child.
Robyn is studying
to be a doctor - just like her father.
Their connection is a Frenchman
named Daniel, who is dying in a hos-
pice. His friend Maggie visits every
day to be with him.
He tells her his story,
how
he
donated
sperm for the money
when he was young-
er, and now has four
children out in the
world
somewhere.
He wants her to find
them, so he can meet
them before it is too
late. Despite its sad
premise, this is a
lovely tale which I enjoyed very much.
Thanks must go to Jane for recom-
mending it to me! This book is on the
Rental Fiction shelves in the library.
I’ve also read The Husband, by Dean
Koontz. Mitch is an or dinar y guy, a
landscaper busy at his work planting a
flower bed when his mobile phone
rings. He's told "we have your wife;
you can get her back for two million
cash". As he tries to argue that he
doesn't have that kind of money, the
man tells him he will find it somehow.
And to prove that he is being watched
and can't risk going to the police, a dog
walker across the street is shot from a
distance. What is he to do? Who can he
turn to? His parents, with their extreme
views on child rearing that have scarred
him for life? His siblings?... This is a
thriller - a little disappointing to me to
begin with, as I'd been expecting a hor-
ror from this particular author, a genre
that has been missing from my reper-
toire in recent years - and it will keep
you on the edge of your seat as you
read each twist in the
tale. This book is on the
Rental Fiction shelves in
the library.

terial was donated to the Centre, who
contacted Otamatea High School with
a suggestion of collaboration.
Mr Mackenzie says he was excited to
involve the students in a factory-like
production line, where the process
stops if the previous student has made
a mistake. He also said it has been
highly beneficial and very motivating
for the students who took part in it. It
was perfectly in line with the school
programme and rewarded with NCEA
credits. Mr Mackenzie and his group
received a thank you letter from the
manager of the Centre, Liz Jones, as
well as a note from the little Small
Poppies. He hopes to have more chanc-
es to do projects like this one.
Jacob Webster is one of the students
who took part in the project. He says
that it has been very motivational to do
a real life project. According to Jacob,
work has been easier knowing there
was a real reward - to be able to see
their creations put into hard use by the
Small Poppies kids.

WE WILL
REMEMBER THEM
ANZAC Day services around the dis-
trict were well attended according to
Hakaru & Districts RSA (Inc) vice-
president, Neville Andrews, at the Kai-
waka War Memorial Hall on Friday
evening.
Neville led the short remembrance to
our local serviceman and women be-
fore the showing of the move ‘The War
Horse’. He reminded us that 8000 hors-
es left New Zealand and only 4 re-
turned. Many died or were killed in
action but others were left to work in
Europe or England.
The movie W ar Horse: Young Albert
enlisted to serve in World War I after
his beloved horse, Joey, was sold to the
cavalry and follows the amazing and
sad experiences of this horse.
Two years ago Bill Leslie wrote an
article on the forgotten heroes for the
Kaiwaka Bugle:
“Little thought is given these days to
the Horse which served its riders so
faithfully in both the Boer War and the
Great War of 1914/18. In both cases it
was often a one way journey for both
man and horse.”
“When War broke out the Auckland
Mounted Rifles consisted of the Wai-
kato M.R., 3rd Auckland M.R, and the
11th North Auckland M.R. The main
body of men left N.Z. along with their
horses on the 10th October, 1914, ar-
riving in Egypt 5th December. As the
war started in August, it took only two
months for N.Z. to get its men and
horses aboard ship… Seasick soldiers
and seasick horses were not a good mix
my father told me. As many as 80 hors-
es
from
the
Kaiwaka/Mangawai/
Hakaru area left never to return, with
my father having two shot from under
him in Palestine after the debacle of
Gallipoli. ...often battles were fought
and won but a retreat had to be made as
both horse and rider had no water. The
horse had to carry man, weapons, food
and water for both, often through soft
sand and all horse food mainly in the
form of Barley had to be planted well
in advance. As the Australians had
horses also the logistics of feeding,
shoeing and maintaining many thou-
sands of horses, donkeys and camels
was huge with the Arabs being paid for
the grain and green feed.”

A man is driving a ute down the road with a
bunch of ducks standing in the back. A police
officer pulls over the driver, informs him that he
is speeding and then asks him where he's going
with all those ducks. The driver says that he
doesn't know what to do with them anymore.
The officer says, "Look, there's a zoo not far from
here and that's where you should take them."
The man thanks the officer and drives off with
his ducks.
The next day the officer again sees the same ute
barrelling down the road. This time, though, all
the ducks in the back are wearing sunglasses.
The officer pulls the driver over and says, "I
thought I told you to take those ducks to the
zoo!" "I did," said the driver, "but now they want

Front: Carolyn Dymock, Jeanette Browne
Local craft group “Stitch and Bitch”
contemplated how to enter a competi-
tion celebrating Nescafe’s 75th anni-
versary. After much discussion, it was
decided to make a quilt and had a pho-
to session with it, sending in the best
photos from the shoot. They did such a
good job they won a substantial prize,
which they’re going to use to attend
the World Of Wearable Art (WOW)
exhibition in Wellington next year.
Well done ladies!
