KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSN ‘FRIGHT NIGHT’ A GREAT SUCCESS
A spooktacular horde of ghosts, goblins and ghouls descended on the Kaiwaka Sports Complex for the Sports Associa-
tion's annual Fright Night. Over 300 people attended making this our most successful Fright Night ever!
What a fabulous array of scary costumes! Congratulations to the costume prizewinners:
Best dressed girl: Tara Moyle (family pass Motat); Best dressed boy: Max Watene Kapea (family pass Spookers); Best
dressed adult: Jesse White (family pass Sheepworld).
Back due to popular demand, we again offered free facepainting and children could choose whether they'd like a gory
gash, a scary scar or something a little less creepy. Following a lolly scramble and games, we opened up our 'haunted
house'. We had transformed our downstairs changing rooms into a hair-raising walk and if the screams coming from
downstairs were any indication, our scarers did a great job!
The evening wound up with supper and people had put so much effort into their halloween-inspired plates – we had
bloodshot eyeball cupcakes, cobweb biscuits, deadman finger sandwiches, ghost meringues and more! Congratulations to
the winners:
Best plate: 1st Megan Little (concession voucher Tai Chi); 2nd Amy Gribble (chocolates); 3rd Margaret Pfalzer (wine)
Photos can be viewed on our website www.kaiwakasports.co.nz. Thank you to everyone who came along – we hope you
had a
frightful time!

ARMISTICE DAY:
At 11 o'clock on the 11th of November we observe a
minute’s silence in remembrance.
After four terrible
years, the First World War finally came to a close with the
signing of an armistice between Germany and the Allied Powers
on 11 November 1918. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the
11th month, the guns famously fell silent. New Zealanders
celebrated enthusiastically
.
OTAMATEA GROUP DAY
A very successful day was held on Labour Day at the Kaiwaka
Sports grounds. Pupils from schools as far as Matakohe and
Waipu in the north to Tomarata and Wellsford in the south
competed with their calves, lambs and some goats.

Father James is a good priest who is faced
with sinister and troubling circumstances
brought about by a mysterious member of
his parish. Although he continues to
comfort his own fragile daughter and reach
out to help members of his church with their
various scurrilous moral - and often comic
- problems, he feels sinister and troubling
forces closing in, and begins to wonder if he
will have the courage to face his own
personal Calvary.

KAIWAKA
FITNESS
My name is Michael (Garrett) and I
moved to Kaiwaka almost 15months
ago having lived for a year with friends
in Te Arai; I had sold my house in
Auckland Central following a desire –
like many – to achieve a more relaxed
and enjoyable life.
Why Kaiwaka as opposed to say
Mangawhai? Well . . why not? It does
intrigue me that so many base a value
on ‘prestige’ or property value in an
area. That to me shows how strong an
influence profit or financial gain can
play a part in buying a house; notice I
say house not home. I came across
Kaiwaka in the early days of me being
here and then found a house here that I
very much like: built in 1936 it has all
the challenges an older house can have
together with huge character.
Since being here I’ve come to love the
scenery and locale and am in
admiration and awe of just how much
this community works for the benefit of
the town and those who live here and
nearby – that’s the main reason for
taking on this role of supporting our
local Fitness Centre: to contribute in
my small way. People dedicate their
time and energy to this community and
I find this humbling and as an example
I will struggle to even get close to the
time and effort that Jules has invested
in working for the Fitness Centre to
date. Donating time effort and
commitment over such a huge period of
time as Jules has, embraces and
personifies a generosity and dedication
to this community that is nothing short
of superb.
Another challenge is heading my way:
writing a column for this publication to
a standard set by Jules. Think I’d better
get a glass of wine in hand before I
start even thinking about topics!

Around the end of November, as soon
as the sky is dark, you will easily
identify the constellation of Pegasus.
Its notable feature is that it is shaped
like a large square and is often called
‘the Great Square of Pegasus’. The
constellation Andromeda runs off the
lower right hand corner of the Great
Square and if you trace that line with
binoculars you may pick out the
Andromeda Galaxy (M31). In truly
dark skies with no Moon, most people
can see this galaxy with their naked
eye, even though it is some 2.5 million
light years away. Unfortunately, it
never rises high in our skies.
Apogee
The point in any orbit furthest from the
body being orbited. Apogee of the Mon
is when the Moon is furthest from
Earth.
OBJECTS IN THE NIGHT SKY
Jupiter
Jupiter is the king of the planets.
Situated fifth in order from the Sun, it
is a huge world with a mass 318 times
that of Earth and an equatorial diameter
over 11 times that of our planet.
Despite its size, Jupiter rotates faster
than any other planet. The very quick
rotation period has resulted in Jupiter
becoming flattened, or oblate. Jupiter’s
pronounced equatorial bulge is visible
through any telescope.
From Earth, Jupiter is one of the
brightest planets and the Great Red
Spot is a conspicuous feature when
viewed through a telescope.
Regulus
Regulus Alphais the brightest star in
the constellation Leo and one of the
brightest stars in the night sky, lying
approximately 79 light years from
Earth. Regulus is a multiple star system
composed of four stars that are
organized into two pairs. The
spectroscopic binary Regulus A
consists of a blue-white main-sequence
star and its companion, which has not
yet been directly observed, is probably
a white dwarf star. Located farther
away is the pair Regulus B and Regulus
C, which are dim main-sequence stars.
MOON: The phases of the moon
New Moon – in modern astronomy,
when the moon is between the Earth
and the Sun and cannot be seen. In
most ancient astronomies, when the
moon is first seen as a very fine sickle
in the western sky.
First Quarter Moon. The Moon has
completed one quarter of its cycle, 7
days from New Moon, and is half
illuminated.

WEATHER
Another month gone for 2014. We
breezed and blew our way through
October literally, with some rain as
well. It was freezing, almost. We were
actually in Te Puke that weekend (the
first weekend in October), so you can
imagine if you know the weather down
that way off the mountains etc. it was
absolutely bitter. Our family told us
how cold it was here.
I was visiting a relly around Baldrock
Road and he was saying that he was
driving all over his farm in his little
truck. Not long after that we got some
welcome rain. It is that sunshine thing
again this year we have not had enough
of. It would be great to get a few days
of it.
We had a good rain at the beginning of
the month then on the 19th and a very
welcome 3 days right at the end.
Well for October we had 145mm
compared to 19mm last year. There
were 11 days with rain this year and 6
days last year.
Our wettest October since 1987 was
2006 with 176mm and the driest was
2000 with 17mm.
The wettest first 10 months since 1987
was 2008 with 1582mm and the driest
was 1987 with 792 mm.
Do not worry about the days running
out this year we will get some more
next year! ~Bev
From NIWA: “In the early hours of 29
October, thunderstorms struck across
Northland
and
Auckland.
Approximately 16,000 lightning strikes
were recorded.”
KAIWAKA
A little boy was sitting on the pavement fishing
into a bucket. Along came the vicar and took
pity on the wee soul and gave him some money.
"How many have you caught today young
man?" he asked as he patted him on the head.
"You're the fourth today," he replied.
A fly fisherman walked into a pub. "Did
you catch much today?" enquired the
barman. "A hundred or two," replied the
trout fisherman looking very satisfied with
himself. "A hundred or two! Never in a
million years." exclaimed the barman. "I'll
bet you a fiver that you didn't." "Done," said
the angler. They both place their money on
the bar. "Now show me your catch," ordered
the barman. The fisherman put his hand
into his fishing bag and placed two trout on
the bar. "I told you I caught a hundred or
two and it definitely wasn't a hundred. I
didn't say one hundred AND two" he took
the money.

Education Review Office Report - 3 year
Cycle
We have recently received the confirmed
reports from both the Education Review
Office
(ERO)
and
New
Zealand
Qualifications
Authority
(NZQA)
following their visits in Term 3. The
conclusion of the ERO report stated:
“Otamatea High School is well led,
managed and governed. Leaders and
teachers review the quality of teaching and
pastoral care so that students learn and
achieve in a supportive and affirming
environment.
Student
achievement,
including that of Māori students, continues
to improve.”
The summary for the Managing National
Assessment (MNA) visit included the
following statement: “Otamatea High
School is commended for continuing to
seek ways to meet the assessment needs of
its students. Courses are reviewed and new
ways are being sought to gather evidence
of, and to recognise achievement. Teachers
are collaborative and seek professional
engagement to develop their understanding
of assessment practice.”
We have been granted the three year cycle
for both review processes which is an
endorsement of our ability to continue to
build sustainable practices. These reports
are a positive reflection of the hard work
and dedication of the senior leaders, school

Paulla-Jean Pridham and Rangi
Zimmerman (photo below)
From the Department of Conservation:
“Dedicated DOC Fairy Tern wardens
Paulla-Jean Pridham (at Waipu) and
Rangi Zimmerman (at Mangawhai)
have been fencing nesting sites and
preparing nest sites by laying down
shell, which the birds like to nest on.
The birds then construct nests on
exposed, low-lying areas of shell-
covered sand. These nests are a simple
scrape in the sand, set amidst the shells.
Last year 10 fairy tern chicks fledged
and a similar success is hoped for this
year. Paulla-Jean and Rangi work a 7-
day
roster
monitoring
breeding
attempts, maintaining fences around
nesting sites, helping with public
education, predator trapping and
enforcing laws. Volunteers also play a
big part in monitoring, trapping and
surveillance to assist the wardens.”

KAIWAKA SCHOOL
Reflection Garden
Thanks to some very hardworking
parents and teachers, we have a lovely
new Reflection Garden at our school.
We especially thank Benji Woodman
for designing and leading the
construction of this lovely new garden.
We also thank Anna Elworthy for
inspiring and project managing this.
Thanks also to Lindy Gaskin, Sharlene
and Paul Tornquist, Andrea Mitcheson,
Laura Woodman, Rachel Stirling,
Bruce and Lindell Ferguson, Naomi
Walker, Tai, Hamish, Katie, Max, Jade,
Toni, Gareth and Hendrix. Do come up
to school to see this lovely asset.
Swimming Pool Operator's Course
Any volunteers to attend a small pool
operators course on 20th November
from 8:30am to 4:00pm? The school
will pay the $350 if the person being
trained is happy to be rostered on as a
doser for the school pool over the
summer holidays. We can only keep
the school pool open over the holidays
with volunteers from the community.
This
gives
local
children
the
opportunity to become familiar with
the water in a safe pool.
Kapahaka
Our Kapahaka Group performed at
Kaipara Cultural Festival last Saturday
and were amazing. The reports back
say that they performed brilliantly and
behaved perfectly. We even had an
emailed message from the Principal of
another school congratulating us on our
school’s performance. We thank Mina
Paikea and Luke Connelly for
preparing our students and to Lindy
Gaskin for organising the trip. Thank
you also to parent helpers, Tracey
Nathan, Siobhan Cole and Lorena
Quirk and of course the support from
Whanau and friends who attended their
performance.
Board Of Trustees Elections
Nominations for B.O.T vacancies are
now closed. Nominated candidates are
Clare Borck, Adrian Buxton and Vicki
Neil. Candidates statements have been
posted with voting papers. Make sure
your completed voting form is returned
to school in the envelope provided and
posted into the red ballot box in the
office. Voting closes at noon on Friday
14th November 2014.
~Sara McAulay, Returning officer.
BOT Report
If you have been on the school grounds
recently you would have noticed two
new aspects – a lovely new path for our
students and whanau to walk along
safely in front of the staff parking zone
(on the side which formally had the
dental clinic) the materials and
constructing of which was very kindly
donated by some superb local business.
We would like to acknowledge and
thank Golden Bay Cement and
Wharehine for the materials and Phil
Keen Concreting for the labour -
specifically Phil, Marty (Dad of Keidis
and Shia), Clarke (Dad of Kazia), Mohi
and Hori you guys are awesome!
The second new feature is a beautiful
“Reflection Garden” on the hillside as
you head up towards the senior school
and offices. Many thanks to Anna
Elworthy and her Kereru class for the
inspiration and obtaining the grant and
to the parents, tamariki and staff who
came on the Saturday of Labour
weekend to participate in the working
bee, it looks very inviting and serene –
once the wharenui arrives in the near
future it will become even more so. A
very warm and grateful thanks to Benjy
and Laura Woodman (parents of
Willow and Olive) of Forgotten Fruits
Nursery for their expertise in the
design and landscaping of this piece of
art.
As you all will recall, our school held a
Cakes & Bakes Stall at the recent
elections – this was highly successful
(thanks to all of our school families
who contributed) and $500 was raised.
This money will be given to the Nga
Tumanako (approx. 85% of Kaiwaka
Students) and the Kereru groups on a
pro rata basis so that all of our tamariki
benefit from this putea (money).
We have our annual Noho Marae trip
on the 13th and 14th of November, this
year we will be staying at another
Ngati Whatua Marae, being Oruawharo
as our usual destination of Otamatea
Marae was unavailable. However the
tamariki and whanau are viewing this
as an opportunity to learn more about
another Marae that our school has
whakapapa (ancestry) to.
Heading into December we have
athletics day on the 6th and School
Prize giving on the 12th. We will be
inviting the school and community to
purchase school pool keys for the
summer swimming period around this
time – for this to happen we require
another “doser.” This involves being
rostered on twice daily dosing over the
swimming period, the roster does take
into account preferences and “dosers”
are entitled to a free key! This is not
restricted to parents of Kaiwaka School
parents, if it is something you may be
interested in as a community member
please phone the school for more
information on 4312 309.
