END OF AN ERA
xxxxxxxxx 7.30am-6.30pm
xxxxxxxxx 8am-5pm
Rowena Dowson has retired
from her business at the
Kaiwaka Postal Centre, where
she has been the proprietor for
15 years.
Prior to that, she worked part-
time for Gail Leabourn in the
postal centre, and also with her
husband in the area’s rural mail
delivery.
Rowena says the dynamics of
post have changed over the
years, with the letter count down
and the parcel count up, and
more people living in the
district.
Space has been at a premium
behind the counter for some time
now - rural areas have been
bucking the national trend in
mail deliveries. Rowena saw the
need to expand the business
which would entail a number of
changes, and decided it was not
for her and chose instead to sell
and retire.
The ways of working have
changed, too, eg all LTSA
transactions
are
now
computerised, where once it
was all manual paper work
Rowena thanks her customers,
and is looking forward to her
retirement, where once she’s had
a bit of a holiday she plans to
indulge in her hobbies and spend
time with family.
Rowena has been part of the
Kaiwaka community for more
than forty years, including many
hours
helping
to
compile
‘Kaiwaka - a photographic
History’, and being involved
with the local schools when her
children were attending.
KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSN
Gymnastics Otamatea
Our
gymnasium
was
packed on Tuesday with
family
members
and
supporters who came to
our Otamatea Gymnastics
prizegiving.
The highlight was seeing
parents join in with their
children
using
the
equipment and watching
them have so much fun
together
as
families.
Congratulations
to
the
trophy winners:
Liana Cullen - Most Improved Recreational Junior
William Chapman - Outstanding Club Spirit Recreational
Ryan Wood - Outstanding Club Spirit Senior
Sophie Gribble - Most Improved Senior Gymnast
Many thanks to club President Stephanie and her
team who do such a great job running this large club.
Not only does Stephanie provide gymnastics
opportunities to our club members, she also takes in
many community groups throughout the year,
allowin
g children to enjoy a sport they might not otherwise
be able to experience. If you would like to enrol your
child in gymnastics next year, please visit our
website
www.kaiwakasports.co.nz
or
contact
Stephanie on
gymnasticsotamatea@gmail.com.
The coaches make a huge contribution to the club, so
we are very grateful to: Andrew Swadling, Megan
Little, Linda Cowbourne, Stephanie Brown, Holly
Anderson, Holly Kenyon, Christy Brown (above)
and Amalie Brown. A special thank you to coach
Christy Brown who is leaving after 6 years

ABOUT TOWN
.........
Have you seen the Christmas

Best wishes to Rowena Dowson
who has sold her business at the
Kaiwaka Postal Centre and retired.
Welcome to Mukesh and Pragna
at the new Kaiwaka Food Mart.
Thank
you
to
the
Bugle

Merry Christmas to all from the

The family of talented cook, Hassan Kadam,
has a life filled with both culinary delights
and profound loss. Drifting through Europe
after fleeing political violence in India that
killed the family restaurant business and
their mother, the Kadams arrive in France.
Papa Kadam is inspired to set up an Indian
restaurant in a small town, unfortunately
putting the Kadams in direct competition
with the snobbish Madame Mallory's
acclaimed haute cuisine establishment
across the street…

Tennis
What a great response there has been to
our junior tennis lessons! We have
increased the hours that John White
coaches because of the demand - we
now have 8 & 9 year olds at 3pm, 7
years and under at 3.30pm and Year 6 -
Year 13 players at 4pm. Lessons will
run each week up to and including
Monday 15th December. We will start
again Monday 9th February and go
through until probably a week before
the end of term. It is wonderful to see
the club grow and young players
develop with skilled guidance.
Thank you to everyone who attended
last weeks AGM, and welcome to Jody
Greig who is the clubs new President.
Don't forget that our annual Otamatea
Tennis Tournament will be held on our
courts over Anniversary Weekend next
month. More details in the next Bugle.

Martial Arts
You are invited to attend the end of
year prizegiving of our Otamatea

Sports Complex this Sunday from
9.30am, on our number 1 field (or

presentations, and a shared morning
tea.

For any Martial Arts queries, please
email club President and black belt
instructor
Craig
Bennetts
on
otamatea.kempo@farmside.co.nz.
Dog Owners
We are having a problem with dog
poop on our fields. If you like to walk
your dog on our fields, that's fine, but
please scoop that poop!
We have many people who train on our
fields as well as children playing on
them, and it's not nice for them to step
in poop. Please be a responsible pet
owner and clean up after your dog.
Thank you.
Touch Tournament
There is still space for a couple more
teams to enter in the Whanaunga Touch
tournament to be held at the Sports
Complex on 10th January. The
tournament
is
a
fundraiser
for
Otamatea marae. There will be
prizemoney for the top 3 teams plus
lots of spot prizes. The day will also
include stalls, music, free overnight
camping at our grounds, hangi and
more - a fun family day! Keen to enter
a team? Contact me for a registration
form.
If you would like to have a stall on the
day, please contact Taira Lambert on
021 2645701.
Touch Module
Would you like to play in our Summer
Touch Module? The Touch module
will be held at the Sports Complex for
eight weeks on Sunday afternoons
starting on Sunday 1st February. Teams
are 6 a-side with at least three females
on the field, double points for female
try-scorers. You can have up to 14
players in your team, team fee is $100.
This is a casual, friendly competition
for mixed teams of men, women and
teenagers. Touch is easy to learn and
just about anyone can play. Why not
start getting your team together!
Top of the Rock
Our 5th annual multi-sport event Top
of the Rock will be held on Sunday 8th
February. Entry forms are now on our
website www.kaiwakasports.co.nz.
Prices are very reasonable for a
enjoyable day out – for example the
5km or 10km run/walk is $15 for
adults, $5 for children and preschoolers
are free. With two earlybird prizes
draws on offer, now is a good time to
get your entry in - it might seem like a
long time way but time rolls round
pretty quickly at this time of year!

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
Book Swap
The Dargaville book swap is done and
dusted for another six months. Many thanks
to everyone who took part, you made it a
great day. Come on in and take a look at
the new titles - there's something for
everyone, including some DVDs for kids
and adults.
Holiday Reading Program
We're taking part in the Kaipara District
holiday reading program. Information will
be sent to Kaiwaka School before they
finish for the year, or come in to the library
and ask about it in the week before
Christmas (I'm still working out our details
as I write this!). It's open to all kids, so
visitors to the district and anyone else are
welcome to take part. You (or rather, your
parent or guardian) don't need to be a
library member to take part, but you do if
you wish to borrow our books.
Bolinda BorrowBox
Have you used our online service for audio
and e-books yet? Our district has signed up
to another service in addition to Overdrive,
which we're anticipating will start in the
week before Christmas, and will be easier
to use than Overdrive (no installing a third-
party program that you have to register and
log in to!). Ask for information when
you're in the library - we've got some cards
and flyers to give away that tell you how to
use it. All you need is a PIN set on your
library card; you can do that at the library.
Holidays Hours
Our last day for this year is Monday 22
December 4-6pm, then we reopen on
Monday 5 January, also 4-6pm, then we
resume
normal
hours
-
10am-2pm
Wednesday-Saturday, 4-6pm Monday,
closed public holidays.
Joining the library
Any adult living in Kaiwaka can join the
library. There is no charge, as we receive
funding from Kaipara District Council (so
this is your rates in action!). Two forms of
identification are required, one being a
personal identification that has your name
and signature (such as an NZ driver's
licence or a Community Services Card), the
other being a proof of address that is no
more than three months old (eg a power or
telephone bill, or a letter from a recognised
government authority such as WINZ).
Bring these two forms of ID in, fill in our
form and sign it in the library, and you can
begin borrowing that day. With your
permission, your family can use your
library card; you are responsible for any
charges (ie lost or damaged
items)
incurred
on
your
account.

Havers, 30 years old, frumpy,
and back in uniform and on the
streets after failing to get on
with everyone at CID. And
after eight months of that, she's
pulled back to be paired with
that sodding little fop Lynley.
How could they do that to her?
Clearly they're trying to get rid
of her once and for all, and
she's not going to have a bar of
it - she'll show them what she's
capable of! But Webberley, the
super, has other ideas and
thinks she has learned from her
experiences, and Lynley might
just be the one to sort her out
and make something of her -
much to his boss Hillier's
dismay. And so her first task,
having been assigned this
partnership on a Saturday
afternoon, is to fetch the said
Lynley
from
a
Chelsea
wedding
party,
back
to
Scotland Yard to be briefed
about the case before they head
for Yorkshire to investigate.
She is mortified to have to go
to such an elegant place, to a
wedding no less, in her horrible ill-fitting
uniform and face all these elitists in their
perfect setting.
Now, if like me you've seen the tv series or
read some of the other books in this series,
every name mentioned here will be familiar
to you already, though the situation may
not sound like the characters you know.
But this is where it all started, before
Lynley and Havers (and Simon, Deborah
and Helen) were the tight team that we've
come to love. It does not disappoint for a
moment. This is the first in the currently 18
-book Inspector Lynley series, with another
due out next year. I've read several later
books already, mostly in no
particular order and enjoyed
them just fine that way - but
if you've never read any I do
recommend starting at the
beginning so you see the
progression of events and
character development. I'm
going to be doing that from
now on as the books are
available at the library and
desperately try to forget
what I know about what's
going to happen in the
future. This book is on the
Rental Fiction shelves, due
to be moved to the free
shelves in July 2016.
The Beckoning Ice by Joan
Druett. Wiki Coffin is still
with the US Exploring
Expedition, sailing south in
the Atlantic Ocean heading
for Cape Horn - a most
dangerous stretch of water
for any boat - heading for
the
Pacific.
The
fleet
encounter a sealer returning
to the eastern US seaboard,
whose captain reports the
discovery of a body on an
iceberg they passed, clearly
murdered from the wounds
that could be seen as they
slipped past in the murky
fog. As a sworn sheriff's
deputy Wiki is included in
the small party to which the tale is told, to
be investigated by him as the opportunity
arises. But others have their own ideas,
including the rescued sealers on board
wanting to know where that other boat had
been so they too can profit from the riches
to be found. And others have their own
ideas about where the fleet should be
heading. Wiki once again finds his
life - and the lives of others - put at
risk with no help to be found
outside of the fleet, and must save
himself if he can.
This is the fifth book in the Wiki
Coffin series, and I am still
enjoying it - and wishing there was
more, but at this point in time I see
no sign of a sixth title. I
recommend reading this series in
order as they progress in time, and
sometimes less than a day has
passed between the end of one
book and the start of the next. This
book is on the Rental Fiction
shelves until July 2015 when it will
move to the free shelves.
Season's Greetings
Many thanks to the volunteers who
have put their time in to making the
library the great place it is this
year. And to our library members
who come in to get books and
share stories with us.
See you in the library!

WEATHER
Here I am reporting for the last time for
2014 for you. We have had a very
windy and blustery month this year. I
would have liked a bit more sunshine
as I am sure all would have. There has
been a lot of time the weather has felt
like true September weather. It has
been rather cold at times and even
though we are getting sunshine that
wind is sure cooling. It would be good
if it went away for a while.
For November we had 117mm rain and
for 2013 we had 72mm. That rain over
16
th
, 17
th
and 18
th
was welcome. We
got 88mm over those three days.
The wettest November since 1987 was
1999 with 340mm and the driest was
1994 with 20mm.
This year from January to end of
November we had 1556mm and for last
year we had 1096mm. Our wettest 11
months since 1987 was 2008 with
1645mm and the driest was 1994 with
884mm.
Well, here is wishing you all a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year
filled
with
lots
of
fun
and
laughter. Take care on the roads out
there and keep your speed down. If
you think you will be late heading off
to where you are going leave a quarter
hour earlier. It saves a lot of stress and
frustration.
Looking
forward
to
reporting to you next year.

ZONTA
Scholarship Winner
At their monthly meeting on
Monday 24th November, Sue Poynter on
behalf of the Zonta Club of Mangawhai
presented the 2014 "Spirit of Adventure"
Scholarship to Briar Lomas (pictured
top). Briar has also just been appointed
Head Girl at Otamatea High School.
Currently sitting school exams, Briar has
chosen to go on her voyage in April 2015
after which she will be reporting back to
the Mangawhai Zonta Club of her
experience. The club wishes her a great
voyage and looks forward to hearing all
about it.
Zonta Says No
As part of the 16 days of Activism (25th
November to 10th December) for the
"Zonta Says No" campaign against
Gender/Family violence, the Zonta Club
of Mangawhai held an Awareness/
Information Evening in the Mangawhai
Village Hall on Weds 26th November.
Jan Barnett opened the meeting and
introduced representatives from the
following local agencies who all spoke
about their organizations:-
•
SOS – Crisis Intervention and Advocacy
for women and children survivors of
family and sexual violence
•
Hestia Women’s Refuge
•
Te Rito Champions
•
NZ
Police
Domestic
Violence
Prevention
Nicole Walker (pictured bottom) is one
of 11 Te Rito Champions. The young 24
year old spoke about her reasons for
becoming a Champion and what their
role will be in the community. All 11
have been going through Police Vetting
and training in order to become a first
port of call for anyone facing family
violence issues. They are to be the link in
the chain to all the other support organizations and they held a ceremony on 11th
November to mark the start of their work.
Liz Holsted (Area 1 Zonta Director) remarked "the evening will be a catalyst for
better communication between all groups and as such was a very worth while
meeting. I'd like to see this as a yearly event".
Liz also spoke on the alliance between Zonta and the Sophie Elliot Foundation
for the next two years with Zonta fundraising for the purchase of the book
"Loves-Me-Not" to be used in school courses for both teenage boys and girls to
determine the difference between good and bad relationships. The book is now
available to buy from all good bookshops but as part of the course will be given
to each boy and girl attending.

Molesworth,
on
the
Hastie farm Otioro Road Topuni.
Sunday the 11th January 2015.
The entries are already coming in for
this popular event, some new faces
along with a strong line up of regulars.
One local dog has wintered extremely
well, so much so that he had trouble
fitting down the race at a recent event at
Taupo. Perhaps a course with ‘Jenny
Craig’ could help Hail!
We will be having hands-on practice
evenings, without the pressure of
having to compete in front of a gallery.
Look forward to seeing you on the 11th,
all day, refreshments available.
Please remember all dogs must have a
current dosing certificate. For more

In April Molesworth will be hosting the

time we have hosted this event in our
66 years and the 50th trials on the
present site. ~Rob H.

TOP OF THE ROCK
The Kaiwaka Sports Association's fifth
annual multi-sport event, the Top of the
Rock, will be held on Sunday 8th
February.
The event caters for walkers, runners
and mountain bikers, both recreational
and competitive as there are a range of
options:
• 5km or 10km walk or run
• 10km run + 15km mountain bike ride
• 30km mountain bike
Routes
travel
through
some
of
Kaiwaka's most scenic countryside –
bush, lakes and farmland. And you get
the opportunity to climb iconic
Baldrock Mountain, which is easier
than the daunting view from the road
suggests, as there is a well formed track
which spirals around the mountain.
You don't need to be concerned about
your fitness level as there is no time
limit on completing the events and they
even have marshals in utes following
the tailenders who will give you a ride
back if you get tired! Participants of all
ages enter Top of the Rock, from pre-
schoolers upwards – last year the $50
prize for the oldest participant went to
an 83 year old!
TV3's Brendon 'Money Man' Johnson
will host the prizegiving with prizes for
placegetters as well as lots of great spot
prizes, including a mountain bike
sponsored by My Bike in Whangarei. A
raffle will also be drawn for a
lawnmower, kindly donated by Steve
from
Kaiwaka
Motorcycles.
The
organisers are very appreciative of the
support from all sponsors, particularly
major sponsors Jaques Four Square and
Borck Contracting.
Last year there were over 300
participants and they are hoping to
build on that number this time. Entry
forms can be downloaded from
www.kaiwakasports.co.nz or can be
picked up from:
• Jaques Four Square
• Kaiwaka Motorcycles

WW1: Letter from Bill to Richard
A year before Bill, WW Shelton-see Bugle 23, died of
wounds in France he wrote to Richard
(Dick) Leslie who was serving in
Palestine, along with Charlie and Keith
Leslie. Dick’s son, Bill Leslie, notes there
were several Bills serving - Bill Leslie,
Bill Cameron, Bill Williams who was
killed as was Charlie Stanaway and Arch.
McAlpine.
Hotel de Dug Out.
Somewhere in France. 27-7-1916.
Dear Richard, Just a few lines to try and get in touch with you boys again,
I wrote to Charlie some months ago but never heard whether he got it or
not. I had a letter from him some two weeks ago in which he mentioned
that he was in (and had been for some six weeks) the Cairo Hospital, says
that he told you to be sure and to write to me, but I never received a line,
just wait till I get hold of you young man, you can’t imagine how I look
forward to a few lines from you boys, and when I caught sight of Charlie’s
letter, I nearly went off my rocker, he must have had a pretty crook time
Dick, and surely he will get a trip back to N.Z., now. He seemed to be
worrying about his chances of getting with you again which he thought
were rather small, however I hope if he does not get a trip home, he will
have no trouble getting with you again, we have had some rare
excitement at times since arriving in the trenches, cousin Bills [William
Quinn Leslie] lot were in a hot spot for a while, I enquired about Bill and
heard he was alright, have just got wind that their lot have moved down
close to us so you can bet your life I am off right now to try and locate him,
I haven’t seen him for over a month, I intend to take Charlie’s letter along
in case he has not heard from you boys, I have carried Chas letter in my
tunic ever since I received it, in case I should run into Bill. Billy Williams
[Mangawhai] should be here now, but try as I might, the last time or two
we have been out, I could not locate him. Charlie Stannaway joined our
company some three weeks ago and the first thing asked on locating me
was, where is Dick? He looks A.1. in his uniform, and always is spick and
span and showed me photos of himself and his wife yesterday, says she
asked to be remembered to you and I, should he ever come across us. Herb
Turner is in England by this time I guess. He is in the Cycling Corps and
was to go there for three months training. Also Cyril Rodgers, my brother
Fred will be here soon, he is in the 13th rifles, guess all N.Z. will be here
before long, except those that got married to get out of coming eh!, ….
Hardy, Chucky, David T- and quite a few more have signed on, I get
quite a few letters from Mareretu, they tell me that Ben [Birt], had a
letter or two from you lately, Bennie is more than ever anxious to come
but I hope that he has more sense, what say you eh!. Charlie Stannaway
tells me that McAlpine went into camp with him, but he was put out,
forgot if he said his missus was the cause of it or not. Had a letter from your
Dad last mail, he seems to be getting along alright, they sent me a photo
of the house since it was done up and looks O.K., Your Mother will be
worrying about Charlie, but somehow I can’t think anything else he will
get a trip home, last letter I had was Keith was due home in a few days,
and Jack (Andrew John) and wife were going to Wellington to meet him,
guess he won’t be sorry to be home for a while, and wont he have a good
time. I hope he has better sense than to try and get away again although
he will find it most quiet with all the boys away. We have been close on
three months in the trenches and four in France, put in a certain time in
the trenches and then go out to rest billets for a short spell. I put in most of
my time trying to locate Billy Williams and Leslie but with the above
mentioned results, on one occasion I met cousin Bill out there and we put
in a good afternoon together. Guess I will have to bring this scribble to a
close now trusting [should I find you] that you will be in the best of
health, also Charlie if he is with you again and with all kinds of good
wish’s.
Believe me your affect Chum. Please be sure to drop me a few lines right
now. Bill [Shelton]

KAIWAKA FITNESS
Make It Easy To Succeed.
This is a focus in the Fitness Centre over
the coming month: an emphasis on starting
the New Year on an encouraging theme.
Behind this is awareness and perceptions:
that we can embark on crash diets, often
with extreme requirements whereby we
deny ourselves in an attempt to lose in
weeks what has taken us months or even
years to accumulate; that we join a Gym or
in this case our local Fitness Centre with an
image of a toned down physique, so we go
at it gung-ho, only to lose heart when the
physical discomfort wades in. I’ve many a
memory where a younger healthy person
has set me a training programme that really
suits them or another
mid-twenties
individual – and later I avoided them as I
knew I hadn’t matched THEIR target.
When I focussed on my intent and not
initially the details of the programme did I
make progress and eventually was able to
adhere to the major components of the
original schedule.
With this in mind in January next year, we
will be having a trial whereby people who
are not current members and who register
with us will be able to access the Centre on
certain days, without a key as we will be
there to let you in. For $1 each visit you
will be able to use the treadmills and
exercycles (only) and we will limit this to 4
in each group and would suggest no more
than 15 – 20 minutes per session initially –
enough time if you’re new to exercise. This
can increase according to your comfort
level. More than one group is fine but a
maximum of 4 to each group please. We
are suggesting 3 days each week for 3
weeks so for an outlay of $9 (9 sessions),
you may be able to get a start. At the
moment the intent is for mid-week only
although weekend may be possible, subject
to feedback.
We are having open days on 11-12
December from 10am to 11am and also
from 6pm to 7pm. We will have forms for
you to register your interest and ask any
questions. We hope to start this trial on
Monday 12 January, subject to feedback/
numbers and it will continue until the end
of January. At that point we will make a
special offer available for Fitness Centre
membership until renewal in May 2015. If
you can’t attend on one of these days,
please contact us:
kaiwaka.fitnesscentre@gmail.com
or
check the Centre’s Facebook page. We are
especially looking for those who wish to
improve their fitness and/or health and who
may not know where to start or just need
companions. We can talk about this at the
open days.
It is important to note that we are only
providing access to the Fitness Centre; we
do NOT offer training schedules nor do we
become involved in any health instructions.
This is not a training programme. We will
be there to enable access and to keep you
company. We will be your ‘buddies’ whilst
you can explore this trial.
This is the last post for this year. We wish
you a safe and happy Festive Season and
we’d really like to see some new faces next
year. ~Michael
Year 10 Leadership
This year the students of 10E have
been lucky enough to have Leela
Hauraki from Sport Northland come
to Otamatea High School to teach
them about Ki-o-Rahi. This game is
native to New Zealand which and is
similar to rippa rugby where you have
to tag the opposition before they score
a try. At the start of Term 4 the
students
from
10E
went
to
Maungaturoto Primary School where
they taught the Year 5 and students
the
game
of
Ki-o-Rahi.
The
tournament was a huge success and
the 10E class showcased their
fantastic leadership skills. Thank you
to the students and teachers of the
Year 5 and 6 classes at the primary
school for allowing us to come and
teach Ki-o-Rahi.
~Lana Parkinson
Māori Art Drawing Techniques
One of the courses offered in Term 4 was
Māori
Art
Drawing
Techniques
–
Kowhaiwhai. This course was delivered
by Brian Mitchell from Te Wānanga o
Aotearoa and is part of the school’s
initiatives to raise Māori achievement.
The course took place one day per week
over three weeks and the 15 students not
only learned about kowhaiwhai, they
gained
traditional
knowledge,
representation of identity and meaning.
Students also gained 4 credits at Level 2
and have the opportunity to continue
into Kawai Raupapa introduction to
(Māori) Art Level 3 or at
tertiary level undertake Toi
Paematua – Diploma in Māori
Art Level 5.
Career opportunities from this
course can lead to a
practising artist, cultural art
educator, stage, theatre and
television
work,
and
restoration work.
The course proved very
popular with the students and
there is already a waiting list
to get on the course next year.
An extension of this course is
the Whakairo which will be
offered again next. year to
those who completed the
Kowhaiwhai course this year.

DECEMBER NIGHT SKY OVER KAIWAKA
Bulk Cartage
Hopefully by the time you read
this, summer has arrived and with it
clear skies and warm air, which are all
great conditions for stargazing. Now is
the time to make the most of the
weather conditions and learn some of
the familiar constellations in the night
sky. At this time of the year gazing at
the stars happens later and later in the
evening, and the moonlight does help
to hide some of the stars, however you
don’t have to wear thermals or wet
weather gear (hopefully!).
To get started learning the summer sky,
there are some key landmarks to find.
First look north and find the three
bright stars in a line, often called ‘The
Pot’. These stars make up Orion’s Belt,
one of the most distinctive guides of
the night sky.
Lower in the north you should pick out
the Gemini Twins, Castor and Pollux,
and from them the rest of the
constellation of Gemini.
The four moons are not always visible
because some may be in front of the
planet, behind it or eclipsed by
Jupiter’s shadow.
Extend the line of the Belt stars to the
right (east) and you will find Sirius, the
brightest star in the sky. Extending the
line to the left (west) from the Belt and
you will find the orange star,
Aldebaran, the brightest star in the
constellation of Taurus. Continuing
that line further to the left and you will
find the beautiful star cluster the
Pleiades (Matariki). Going back to
Orion’s Belt, identify the bright stars
Rigel (white) and Betelgeuse (reddish),
which are respectively above and
below the Belt. Those two bright stars,
together with two slightly fainter ones,
enclose most of Orion with the Belt in
the middle.
Following a line up the sky through
Orion towards the south brings you to
Canopus, the second brightest star of
the night sky. The final bright star to
locate is Achernar, marking the end of
the
meandering
constellation
of
Eridanus (the River).
Once you have located these bright
landmarks in the sky, you can explore
further by identifying some of the more
prominent constellations.
Canopus, known as Atutahi in Maori,
is the second brightest star of the night
sky and dominates our view overhead.
It is the brightest star of the important
southern constellation Carina, yet is
distance of 310 light-years has only
been reliably determined in the last 20
years.
VENUS
Venus is not observable during
December through February as it is too
close to the Sun. You may spot it low
on the western horizon (with much
fainter Mars) soon after sunset.
MARS
This is not a good season to find Mars.
It is low in the west and setting early
during
December.
It
then
gets
progressively closer to the Sun, making
it unobservable through January and
February.
JUPITER
In Leo, Jupiter is rising about midnight
in mid-December and by 10pm in mid-
January. It reaches opposition with the
Sun on 7 February, rising just as the
Sun sets. This will be the best time of
the year for telescopic observations, as
Jupiter is highest above the horizon by
1am. Just before opposition, the planet
moves from Leo into Cancer.
SATURN
Saturn is just visible very low in the
eastern dawn sky in December. It rises
earlier than the Sun by about two hours
each month, so by the end of February
it is rising at about midnight. It makes
an interesting sight in the head of
Scorpius in company with the red giant
star, Antares.

Good News in December:
Each Sunday 10am and 7pm.
Saturday December 13 and Sunday December 14:
TEAM FROM KAWERAU
Amazing things are happening in Kawerau.
It is not the same place anymore. A young people's team is visiting
us this weekend and will let us know the GOOD NEWS.
Saturday December. 13, 7.00pm, at the Kaiwaka Memorial Hall.
Sunday 14 December , 10 am, at the Kaiwaka Family Church.
Christmas Family Service
Sunday 21 December, 10am.
This is our main Christmas meeting.
Children, young people, adults, all warmly welcome.
We at Kaiwaka Family Church send our best wishes for the
Christmas season and the New Year to everyone in our wonderful
Kaiwaka Community.
200 years ago this Christmas, Samuel Marsden, on Christmas Day 1814,
spoke to a large Maori audience in the Bay of Islands about the coming of
Jesus into the world. His text was “I bring you glad tidings of great joy.”
A chief called Ruatara was his translator.
Over the next few decades more and more tribes received the GOOD
NEWS, resulting in peace between the tribes. Slaves were released by their
captors, and proclaimed the GOOD NEWS to their own people in the
Waikato even before missionaries arrived there.
And today the GOOD NEWS is again announced all over the world,
resulting in amazing changes in a number of countries, changes which the
news media choose to ignore. For example, did
you know that Indonesia is now 25 percent
Christian?
And we are happy to say that here in our own
country the GOOD NEWS is again spreading.
People are less and less satisfied with their lives.
They're looking for change, good change.
That is what's happening in Kawerau.
Nothing in life compares with knowing Jesus!
Have a wonderful Christmas! ~John Dekker
