20 January 2015
On Sunday 4th January, the Rev.
Samuel Marsden (photo left) was the
guest preacher at Christ the King
Anglican Church, Mangawhai. The
Reverend Samuel Marsden is the great
-great-great grandson of the original
Rev. Samuel Marsden who preached
the first Christian sermon to Maori
and Pakeha on land in New Zealand
on
Christmas
Day
1814
and
established the first mission station at
Oihi Bay on the Purerua Peninsula near Rangihoua Pa in
the Bay of Islands. The present day Samuel Marsden is also
a minister in the Anglican Church. In his famous ancestor’s
memory he was given the name Hamuera Matenga, which
his ancestor was known by during his time in NZ.
On this occasion, at Mangawhai, he presented an inspiring
and motivating sermon entitled 'New Beginnings'.
Following the service the Rev. Marsden blessed and planted
a heritage rose (bred from one of the original roses brought
to NZ by the missionaries), called 'Samuel Marsden',
named after his famous ancestor.
The photo below shows Rev. Samuel Marsden blessing the
‘Samuel Marsden’ rose in the gardens of Christ the King
Anglican Church, Mangawhai.
1820 SAMUEL MARSDEN
VISITED the KAIPARA
An excerpt from CENTENNIAL OF KAIWAKA
RAUTAU O KAIWAKA 1859-1959, page 15, records the
time when Rev. Samuel Marsden, the great-great-great
grandfather of today's Rev. Samuel Marsden visited our
area.
“In August, 1820, the Rev. Samuel Marsden travelled up the
Kaipara. He met Muru Paenga, then aged about 50 years,
(probably a considerable underestimate), who offered to protect
any Europeans who might come to live on the Kaipara. On 22nd
August he was at Kaipara Heads and noticed the Otamatea and
other rivers. Two days later near Poutu he met Te Toko, of the
Uri-o-Hau, later killed at Te Ika-a-Ranganui. This chief was
anxious to live in peace, but feared Ngapuhi, against whom he
had no muskets. A Ngapuhi war party was even then in the
district. Te Toko hoped that white men would come to the
Kaipara to preserve peace. He pressed presents upon Marsden,
who later remarked on the great kindness with which he had been
received by Ngatiwhatua.
On 1st November, 1820, Marsden intended to make the portage
from Mangawhai to Kaiwaka to go down the Kottamatta (sic.) but
at Whangarei he ascertained that there were no canoes in the
river, the inhabitants having fled from the Ngapuhi war party. He
thought that when the country was better known, an easy
communication between the east and west coasts would be
opened by means of the Mangawhai and Otamatea rivers. He then
continued down the east coast and up the Kaipara again, being the
first white man known to have visited the district.”

OTAMATEA RAIL BRIDGE
Doing a little art project and would like to
hear from ‘old-timers’ who can tell me:
a) short stories of in, on, over, under the
bridge! The ‘boys will be boys’ kind of
stories (girls can be ’boys’ too!) and,
b) when the original bridge (completed about
1914, formally opened in 1920) was replaced
by the present bridge. There doesn’t seem to
be any record of this.
Trouble is, I need to know a couple by the
beg of Feb and will be away till 29/1.

Towards the end of February Saturn

rising two hours earlier than the Sun
each month since December.
Another new calendar for us to use and
look at. Our December was not up to
scratch last year, in fact having a look
back it was much the same as 2011.
December was a rather windy month
with rain or showers. We were very
grateful for the rain we had in the mid-
dle of the month, though, as things
were drying out; the winds caused a lot
of that. The growing season started off
rather poorly (well as far as our garden
went, anyhow). It seems it has only
been in the last few weeks that things
are taking off thanks to a bit or lot of
sunshine.
We had our wettest December since
1987 (1mm more than 1988), with
211mm rain at our house last month. In
2013 we had 149mm. Our driest was
1984 with just 4mm. We had rain on 9
days last month and 2013 we had rain
on 12 days.
For the year of 2014 we had 1,767mm
of rain and in 2013 we had 1,245mm.
2014 has been our wettest 12 months
since 1987, the driest was 1994 with
892mm. These readings are taken at
our house and vary at different points
around our area. As I do this report the
sun is beating down upon us which is
rather nice as it is the middle of sum-
mer. Not speaking too loudly however
we seem to have had less wind this
month. Our temperatures have been in
the mid twenties. I am trying to start
keeping track of the temperature only
trouble is a lot of the time we are not
around the hottest time of the day as
most temperatures are taken around
3pm. Wishing you all a safe and well
New Year. Take care out there and re-
member to put plenty of water out for
the birds and animals.
Thank you, Bev.

Cricket
I am thinking about
putting on a fun cricket
match
for
the
community, probably in March. Maybe
the Cockies vs the Blockies?
The only problem is - I know
absolutely nothing about cricket! Is
there someone out there who would be
happy to help me organise it? Please
contact me.

Summer Reading
Did your kids take part in the Summer
Reading Program? I expect we'll be
doing it again next Christmas, so watch
this space for information closer to the
time. Remember, you don't have to be
library members to take part, and you
don't have to read only library books.
The idea is to keep the kids reading
over the summer break so they don't
lose those important skills.
New e-books and audio book
service
We have a new online service
starting any day now, from
Bolinda. Like the Overdrive
service we've had for a while
now, you access it using a PIN
that you set at the library. Ask
to do that next time you're there if you
haven't already done it. This service
works through an app (search for
"Bolinda" in Google PlayStore or the
Apple equivalent) and will synchronise
your reading across different devices -
so you can for example start a book on
your tablet, then get a bit of quick
reading done via your phone if you
want to do that (and the device is
online to sync). We have information
in the library if you need assistance, or
ask me for help in person or by email.
Book Review
Molly Fyde and the Parsona Rescue,
by Hugh Howey. "It wasn't easy for
Molly being the only girl in Flight
Academy, but getting expelled was
even worse. Abandoned by her family
when she was young and now tossed
from the only home she's ever known,
her future looks bleak. But then Molly
hears that her father's old starship has
turned up halfway across the galaxy.
Setting off to retrieve the old craft, she
hopes it will hold clues to his
disappearance. Accompanying her as a
chaperone is Cole, her old flight
partner from the Academy. Molly
can't believe it. She's now the
proud owner of her own starship.
Her Spring Break is going to be
spent travelling across the galaxy
with a cute boy. Could things
possibly get any better? Little
does Molly know, they are about
to
get
much,
much
worse..." (
overdrive.com
)
I really enjoyed this story, and am very
pleased it is the first instalment in a
four-book series. I'm looking forward
to reading more about the life of Molly
and the friends she picked up in her
first adventure. Incidentally, I picked
up another series by this author in a
recent sale and these books make it
onto the shelves in the library in the
next few months. This book is
available via the Novel/Overdrive
online library service. Find out more
about this service and set a PIN on
your library account so you can access
it for free, at the library.
See you in the library! ~W endy

IT’S NOT OK!
WHY I BECAME A CHAMPION?
You will have seen the Ads on TV over the
last 2 months promoting the “it’s not ok”
message around family violence, I am one
of 12 family violence champions from the
Kaipara Area and reside in the small town
of Kaiwaka and work in Maungaturoto. My
name is Gregg Nathan and I have returned
to Kaiwaka after a lengthy career in the NZ
Defence Force. My passion is to improve
the demographics and culture in my
Community, I believe its everyone’s
responsibility to help those in need.
Statistics suggest awareness reduces family
violence by one third and deter those
contemplating violence. I’m down with that
kaupapa hence I have agreed to be a family
violence champion. I’m not special, I’m
just a person that cares. If we can help one
another then that goes a long way into
making our Community stronger and safer.
Help is out there, there are agencies,
services etc. that specialise in helping, you
just have to have the courage to do it.
Courage can be defined as the strength to
do what’s right, about making hard
decisions with honesty and integrity, acting
in the best interests of the family/
Community/ Hapu or Iwi, with the focus on
resolution. It takes a lot of courage to do
the right thing.
I really the support the key message of the
Campaign, that family violence is not ok-
but it’s ok to ask for help. The project was
launched in November 2014 and will run
until the end of February 2015. You’ll see
us around the Motu making people aware
hence reducing and deterring violence.
~Gregg Nathan

The Williams family arrived in Hakaru in 1895 owning a small farm across the
road from the Hakaru RSA. A son Albert who arrived with them was soon
joined by William who was born at Hakaru in 1896, as well as another son and
daughter later on. They all attended Hakaru School then held in Sarah's hall
(corner Settlement and Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Roads).
When William left school he worked for William Leslie on Settlement Road and
along with the Leslie boys, Charlie, Dick and Frank, joined the Territorials and
trained at Waipu with the Waipu Scottish Light Horse which later became part
of the North Auckland Mounted
Rifles. Enlisting on Dec 15th,
1915, he embarked on April 1st,
1916, destined for Egypt where
he arrived on May 2nd but was
soon transferred to the NZ 2nd
Battalion,
Auckland
Infantry,
which was serving in Belgium
arriving there August 19th.
His first major battle would have
been
Flers
Courcelette
in
December 1916 in which the
Aucklanders played a huge role.
His next major battle at Messines
in June was his last when along
with many hundreds of other New
Zealanders he was killed on June
8th. He was first buried at a
supply depot named Stinking
Farm, but his body was exhumed
the next day and now rests in the
Wulverghem Cemetery.
William was a keen sportsman
who played both hockey and
rugby for Kaiwaka. His elder
brother Albert Pritchard Williams
after doing a stint guarding the
Awanui Radio Station also served
in France where he was badly
wounded a few months after
William was killed.

POPPIES – A Patriotic
call to Yarn
From
www.knitworld.co.nz/
charity-knitting “On 16th
October 1914 over 8,000
New Zealand troops and their horses
left Wellington harbour and New
Zealand shores bound for Egypt. Over
the course of the next four to five years
on the battlefields of Gallipoli and later
Europe, New Zealand lost 18,166 men
and women to the ravages of war.
Back home the war effort was strong as
the women realised they also could ‘do
their bit’. Patriotic associations were
formed all over the country with over 5
million pounds raised. Women got
together and knitted and stitched items
of clothing for the soldiers including
balaclavas, shirts, underclothing, socks
and darning kits.
In honour of all these men and women
100 years ago, the National Army
Museum is seeking assistance from the
general public of New Zealand to make
a patriotic ‘call to yarn’ by producing
one hand crafted poppy for each
servicemen and women lost by our
nation in the Great War. That is 18,166
poppies!
Let’s help them reach this target by
31st May 2015”.
Your finished Poppies can be dropped
in to any Knit World Shop or send
them to:
Knit World, PO Box 30645, Lower
Hutt, 5040 or Knit World 62 Queens
Drive, Lower Hutt 5010
These very special tributes will be on
show at the National Army Museum in
the form of a cascading waterfall of
poppies in the Museum’s memorial
area.
Poppies can be knitted, crocheted,
sewn or hand crafted in anyway, but
must be red Flanders style Poppy. See
the website for patterns.
FINISHING
STRONG
If the word 'quit’ is part of
your vocabulary, chances are
that the word ‘finish’ isn’t. Finishing
means staying on the job until it is
done. It’s about accountability and
action, because even when you are on
the right track you’ll get run over if you
just sit there.
High achievers will tell you that life
takes on meaning when you take
responsibility for your actions and
pursue your goals with purpose and
passion. Nothing compares to ‘the
rush’ of crossing the finish line. The
fact is, nobody remembers who
finished second, except the guy who
finished second!
Co-authors B.J.Gallagher and Steve
Ventura said the ten most important
words in finishing strong are:" I won’t
wait for others to take the first step.”
The nine most important: “If it is to be,
it’s up to me.”
Eight: “If not me, who? If not now,
when?”
Seven: “Let me have a go at it.”
Six: “I will not pass the buck.”
Five: “You can count on me.”
Four: “It IS my job.”
Three: “Just do it!”
Two: “I will.”
And the most important word: “Me.”
Jesus was the greatest finisher of all
time. Luke 2:49
