Viktor Kahdem is a man who has almost given
up on life, sentenced to a low-security prison
farm, a completely non-threatening environment
where it is still felt that some individuals can be
reformed. At Won Wron, Case Worker Matt
Perry has established a unique program to
rehabilitate broken men through giving them the
responsibility for the rehabilitation of injured
raptors - beautiful, fearsome proud eagles,
falcons and owls. Against all odds, Matt takes
on Viktor as his number one test case,
introducing him to Yasmine, the majestic wedge
tailed eagle with a 2 metre wingspan. If these
two can tame each other, anything is possible.

~Wayne Leslie, Commodore
What a wonderful January we have had
this year.
It has been great for the
school holidays and holidaymakers
alike. Being so fine has helped
businesses through the north with
more people holidaying.
We had a few bits of rain during
January but not a lot to talk about, the
most was on the 31
st
. It has been good
for the water tanks and freshening up
the trees and grass.
I am feeling sorry for the farmers
again. We need a bit more rain so long
as we do not get the winds.
This January was beautiful with little
wind and those glorious sunny days
were great. The 24
th
December was the
last notable rainfall with 7mm so no
wonder it is dry.
The rainfall at our house last month
was 18mm and 2014 was 44mm. Our
driest January since 1987 was 2013
with 10mm and the wettest was 1989
with 343mm.
We had rain 5 days in January with rain
on 5 days in 2014 also. So our total for
the year so far is 18mm.
Our temperature was in the 20s and I
guess if you were in a sheltered possie
it may have reached the 30s.
As I type this report up it is
raining. There is not a lot showing up
on the 5 day rain radar though.
So folk look out for each other and take
care out there.

We
are
now
through January
and if you’re
like
me
still
dragging my feet
when it comes to
leaving
my
holidays behind; and for any New Year
resolutions? I’ve got 11 months yet to
fulfil them.
Two topics this edition:
We have some gym vests with the
Fitness Centre logo for sale at $6 each
(see photo below). We only have 20 of
these so let us know if you’d like to
buy some and I can deliver to you at
the Fitness Centre. If you’re interested
please
kaiwaka.fitnesscentre@gmail.com
with
your size – Medium and Large are
available.
I’m also asking for 2 or 3 names who
have appropriate and valid training
qualifications who may in the future be
interested in offering professional
advice in conjunction with our Fitness
Centre. This is only a plan at this stage;
if you’re interested you will need to
provide certificates of competence and/
or qualifications so we can copy and
keep on file. We have one name so far
so certainly another name would be
nice.
Finally there are some very good
membership fees that will carry you
through to the end of May. $60 for 4
months ($15 a month). Has to be good!

KWMH Honours Board WW1: Brothers
William Frederick and James Quinlan LESLIE
James Quinlan Leslie
William Frederick Leslie
Both boys were born in the old Cameron
house that was situated near where Wayne
and Linda Leslie live on Settlement Road.
Their parents were Charles (Lofty, who
was 6ft 8in tall) and Jessie Leslie, nee
Quinlan, whose sister was married to
Charles Cameron. Her parents were
teachers at the Tanoa School.
The boys did not stay long in Kaiwaka as
the family moved to Puhipuhi when their
father got a job as a bullock team driver
and dam builder after the kauri ran out at
Pukekaroro.
The boys went to school at Puhipuhi and
every year had to walk further and further
to school as the house they lived in was
pulled by the bullocks closer to the
unworked bush and further from the school.
Spending holidays gum digging and
bleeding trees, both left school when they
turned 14, and spent all their younger years
working in the kauri forests of the mid
north.
There was a blazing row when war started
and William Frederick (Fred) joined up as
he found out that he had been born before
his parents married, and so he left without
saying goodbyes to his mother, who spent
many hours weeping into a small hankie,
saying she would never see her first-born
again. She didn’t.
Younger brother James (Jim) also soon
followed Fred, and was the first to be
killed.
Fred joined up at Dargaville and was in the
2nd battalion of the NZ Rifle Brigade
#24/214 and rose to be Lance Corporal. He
survived the Battle of Polygon Wood of
September/October 1917, but was killed in
action on 4 February 1918 and is buried in
the Polygon Wood Cemetery, Belgium.
Jim, it seems, joined up when he went to
Wellington to farewell his brother, as he
was #11059 in the Wellington Infantry
Regiment and died of wounds on 19
October 1917, suffered in the first Battle of
Passchendaele in which 2735 New
Zealanders were killed or wounded. He is
buried in the Nine Elms Cemetery,
Belgium.
A further two brothers, Robert and John,
fought in and survived the Second World
War. ~Bill Leslie

Top of the Rock
The Kaiwaka Sports Associations fifth annual multi-sport event, the Top of the
Rock, will be held this Sunday and it's not too late to enter!
The event caters for walkers, runners and mountain bikers, both recreational and
competitive as there are a range of options:
• 5km or 10km walk or run
• 10km run + 15km mountain bike ride combo
• 30km or 14km mountain bike ride
Routes travel through some of Kaiwaka's most scenic countryside – bush, lakes
and farmland. And you get the once-a-year opportunity to climb iconic Baldrock
Mountain and experience the breath-taking views.
You don't need to be concerned about your fitness level as there is no time limit
on completing the events and they have marshalls in utes following the tailenders
who will give you a ride back if you get tired!
The more casual participants can choose to stroll along the 5 or 10km route
taking in the scenery, while the competitive athletes can tackle the more
challenging routes. Participants of all ages enter Top of the Rock, from pre-
schoolers upwards – last year the $50 prize for the oldest participant went to an
83 year old!
Free overnight camping at the grounds will be available on Saturday and on
Sunday there will be food and drink stalls, a bouncy castle for the children and
the swimming pool will be open. TV3's Brendon “The Money Man” Johnson
will host the prizegiving with prizes for placegetters as well as lots of great spot
prizes. The major spot prize is a mountain bike, donated by My Bike in
Whangarei. A raffle will also be drawn for a Husqvarna lawnmower, kindly
donated by Steve from Kaiwaka Motorcyles.
Last year there were over 300 participants and the organisers are hoping to build
on that number. Entry forms can be found on
www.kaiwakasports.co.nz.
Ways to enter:
•scan and email your form to Cheryl at
kaiwakasports@gmail.com
• drop your form off in the box at Jaques Four Square
•register in person at the Kaiwaka Sports Complex on Saturday 6.30
– 8pm
•you can register on the day from 7am ($5 late fee). The 5 or 10km
walk/run participants register at Pakeho Rd and all others register at

WHEN BUSH FIRES STRUCK KAIWAKA
From the NZ Herald dated 15 February
1898, by various correspondents.
KAIWAKA. “Some of our settlers have
had considerable experience of what a
bushfire is capable of doing when
accelerated by a strong wind and an
[sic] heated atmosphere. Mr Wm
Leslie, jun., has just had about 20 acres
of grass destroyed by fire, together with
a considerable quantity of fencing, and
a valuable lot of kauri timber, the
preservation of the latter having
previously
cost
Mr
Leslie
a
considerable amount of time and
money. Mr C Cameron, who occupies
the adjoining farm to Mr Leslie was
also a sufferer to some extent, while Mr
Thornton, another neighbour, had the
whole of his standing bush devastated
by fire. For several nights the sky has
been illuminated with a rich crimson
hue, indicative of extensive fires at no
great distance away. Out on the open
land lying south-east from here the
country is ablaze. An informant whose
veracity is unimpeachable writes me to-
day as follows:-“The fire now raging
from the Topuni bridge to Te Arai is
one, I think, that must fairly rival the
Pahiatua fire. It has taken the country in
a face for miles wide, and having gone
through the lot is now making its way
for any wings (patches) that have been
left standing.” A Te Arai correspondent
wrote:-The fire “which started at
Mainene*, after burning for some days,
met the one which started at the
Topuni... also extended into the
Mangawai [sic] parish, and did damage
to fences and grass. Some wooden
culverts and one bridge were burned...
The fire is estimated to have destroyed
12 million feet of kauri timber or over,
about one-half of which belongs to the
Kauri Timber Company. The other
belongs to private owners. A number of
sheep and cattle are missing. The fire in
the south end of Te Arai has extended
into Pakiri and some 3 million feet of
kauri has been destroyed there besides
other damage... The country is now
nearly all black on the west and south.
On Saturday and Sunday last a large
smoke in the daytime, and a blaze at
night, were visible from Te Arai, at the
back of Pukekaroro, and the ranges
behind the Tara.” (page 5, via
PapersPast)
As can be seen bushfires are not
restricted to Australia, and the above
fire was very vivid in my father’s mind
as he was only five years old when it
happened. When I was also about five I
can recall a fire that swept through the
Bald Rock area and most of the local
males were called upon to fight it. This
would have been 1945/6. In 1898 the
main grass on farms was Danthonia
which when dry allows a fire to race
through it at great speed. ~Bill Leslie
