The end of Term Two saw our Kapa Haka

group perform at Te Tai Tokerau Festival

at Opononi Area School. The group

performed with an immense sense of pride

and mana. It was great to see a large

number of whanau and friends supporting

them. The group will continue to build

upon their performance as they prepare for

the regional competition later in the year.

Our group were the last performers as the

final conclusion of proceedings involved

the host school gifting a beautiful taonga to

the next host school; this protocol also

symbolised the responsibility endowed

upon us to be good hosts next year. We

have begun preparations for hosting Te Tai

Tokerau 2016 as well as preparations for

the 50th Otamatea High School Reunion;

both events will be run concurrently at the

end of Term One 2016.

The beginning of this term started with a

special Anzac Assembly to commemorate

those who were killed in battle 100 years

ago. The assembly began with the national

anthem, incorporated various students and

staff members reciting significant poems

and historical events and concluded with

The Last Post being played on the bugle.

Students from each whanau class, staff

members and prefects planted 30 crosses

on the grass area at the front of the school.

The crosses bore the names of New

Zealanders who were killed in battle; they

will be on display at the front of the school

for the next two weeks. Our prefects and

some staff will also be laying wreaths at

the various local Anzac services on

Saturday, as is customary every year.

With the approaching of the winter months

you will be pleased to know that we have

recently installed heat pumps in the

classrooms which desperately needed them.

We have also been working on a new

website; the website is now live so please

check it out on www.otamatea.school.nz.

Please note that Tuesday 28th April is a

Staff Only Day but selected students are

being invited into school for a leadership

seminar. This seminar is to upskill

representatives from each whanau class in

OTA Leadership. Students who are

involved in this will receive an invitation

from Ms Green.

Runs on the Board

Over the course of Term One our senior

students have been hard at work

completing their first internal assessments

of the year. Senior teachers have designed

their 2015 courses so that all students in

each class have had the opportunity to gain

at least three credits by the end of the first

term. For example, students doing six

subjects in year 11, who have passed all

their term 1 assessments, will have

achieved at least 18 credits already. This is

a significant step towards passing NCEA

and we believe that early success will

motivate students to continue to work hard

for the rest of the year.

We have a number of brand new NCEA

courses this year: a new Barista course, a

new multi-level computeracy course as

well as a new multi-level digital media

studies course. Under the

expert guidance of Julie

Lewis, we have 20 barista

students gaining valuable

work experience as well

as learning the art of

preparing and serving

Mt Pirongia Silver Pre-Expedition

March 13, 14, 15 saw Kharnse, Rhys,

Kalani, Blake and Marshall complete their

silver pre expedition on Mt Pirongia.

The group tramped to the Kaniwhaniwha

camp ground on dark.

Tents were quickly

erected and tea cooked.

We were up at 6.30am

and by 8am were

tramping up the Bell

We continued up the

Bell track to tackle

"The Cone" (the second highest peak on Mt

Pirongia at 939m). After a tough 200m

climb, we finally summited to be rewarded

with a 360 degree panorama out to Raglan,

Inland to Te Awamutu, Mt Ngaruhoe to

name a few.

An hour later our camp site outside

Pahautea Hut was reached. Dinner was

cooked and friendly chatter with another

DOE silver/bronze group from a Pukekohe

school was exchanged.

A fiery sun set blazed over the West Coast

then during the night, the winds from

Cyclone Pam began to be felt and the

mountain was in whiteout by morning. We

quickly dismantled our tents and headed for

the summit (959m) along the Pahautea

Track (part of Te Araroa Trail). The track

was mostly down hill so by lunchtime we

were practising a river crossing in the

Kaniwhaniwha river and then some fun

bombing into it from a rope swing and

various spots up a tree. Our silver qualifier

will be part of the Hillary Trail in the

Waitakeres.

Sports Awards

Over 100 people turned up to the 31st

Kaiwaka Sports Association Sports

Awards held recently at the Kaiwaka

Sports Complex.

Emcee John Markby, from More FM,

read the profiles of the 29 nominees

and made mention of how hard the

voting must have been with such a high

calibre of nominees. All nominees

received a gift, with thanks to Scott

Worsfold from the ANZ Bank.

Congratulations to the winners: Senior

Sportsperson of the Year - Matt

Moulds, Junior Sportsperson of the

Year - Georgia Brierly, Service to

Sport - Jennie Reynolds, Greg McRae

Memorial Trophy - Holly Anderson.

Senior Sportsperson of the Year Matt

Moulds was nominated by the

Otamatea Hawks Rugby Club. As well

as playing for the Hawks, Matt is the

Northland Taniwha hooker and won

their Most Improved Forward of the

Year award. Matt is in the Blues

Development Squad, the Blues 10's

team and the All Blacks 7's squad.

Thirteen year old Georgia Brierly was

nominated by the Kaiwaka Touch Club

and has extensive achievements in

touch, netball, swimming, cross

country, tag, kapa haka and rippa

rugby. She particularly excels at

athletics – Georgia competed at the

North Island Colgate Games and broke

the Northland record for Under 13 girls

400m.

Nominated by the Eastern United JMB

Club, Service to Sport winner Jennie

Reynolds has an impressive list of

contribution to rugby clubs: President

and Secretary of Eastern United JMB,

Treasurer and Secretary of Rodney/

Otamatea JMB sub-union as well as

Secretary and Treasurer of the

Otamatea Hawks.

The Greg McRae Memorial Trophy

(awarded for sporting excellence and

contribution to code) was won by Holly

Anderson. Holly is a talented gymnast,

having achieved Level 6 in Kiwi Gym.

Holly is a coach for the Otamatea

Gymnastics club and has started a

coaching course, run by Gymsport.

Holly raised funds for her Scout Troop

by running a disco, works in the

pavilion during many KSA events and

recently shaved her head to raise funds

for the Leukaemia Foundation.

There was a sports quiz during the

evening - congratulations to Jasmine

Sampson, Hamish Ferguson, Maia

Fairburn and Billie Le Mesurier-

Cowbourne who won prizes.

Thank you to young singers Tasha

Perrett and Michelle Clark (who sang

at our Yulia & Friends Concert) for

performing for us again. The audience

was wowed with their beautiful

singing.

During a break in the evening John

Markby interviewed three of the young

nominees, Maia Fairburn, Holly

Anderson and Gareth Ferguson, about

their sports and what they liked about

living in Kaiwaka. He then played the

recording on his More FM radio show

the next day.

The first JMB Rally Day of the

season was held at the Sports

Complex on Friday evening – 20

teams played so it was a very busy

night! Many thanks to all the Eastern

United parents who helped out on the

at our grounds this Friday evening –

the Reserves kickoff at 6.30pm and

EVERYBODY’S

READING ROOM

Everybody’s Reading Room is a new play inspired by

actual events in Kaipara during World War 1.

Alfred Gregory was a Dargaville draper, Quaker, and anti-

militarist (as they were known in those days - nowadays

we would call him a peace activist) imprisoned for

sedition when he refused to display a military service

registration poster in 1916. I first learned of Gregory’s

stand through a historical article in the Kaipara Lifestyler

in 2007. The experiences of wartime conscientious

objectors like Archie Baxter and others, who refused to

fight, have been well documented, but Gregory’s story is

practically unknown.

I have taken extensive literary license with the facts,

fictionalising his story and all the characters, but the core

of the plot is based around his act of civil disobedience

during wartime. The play explores conscience and

ideology, and is haunted throughout by the ghost of

Anglo/Irish philosopher (and playwright!), George

Bernard Shaw, who also opposed the war, but for

pragmatic, rather than pacifist, reasons.

I am in contact with one of Gregory’s granddaughters, and

members of the family are coming to see the play.

The play is recommended for audiences aged 13 and up,

and directed by Alister Williams and produced by

Platform Thirteen, a non-profit community theatre group.

It has a cast of nine and has been in rehearsal since

February. Cast and production team come from an area

that encompasses Dargaville, Waipu and Wellsford and all

points in between.

MORRIE’S MERIT AWARD

Morrison Leslie was awarded the New

Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Assn

‘Straight Furrow’ Merit Award at the

New Zealand annual general meeting in

2010, but our Morrie ‘escaped’ his

presentation until the Northland Sheep

Dog Trial Centre Championships held

at Oneriri last weekend. Tony

Hargreaves,

who

had

originally

received it on his behalf, was most

pleased to present the certificate. The

crowd at the championship prizegiving

were

delighted

see

Morrie

recognised for the work and support he

has given.

The words of the award tell the story:

Morrison Leslie, or Morrie as we call

him, has been a member of the

Molesworth S.D.T.C. for over 40 years.

He has been known to run a dog on

rare occasions, but only at his local

club trials. Any working bee will see

Morrie there to help with his dry wit and

quiet sense of humour which is enjoyed

by all who work with him. His ability to

match up sheep and help put them on

the

mark

with

the

team

Molesworth’s huntaway course is

appreciated by competitors and judges

alike. So much so that he took the long

trip to Te Ahu Ahu, Ohaeawai, to be

the

North

Island

Championships. When the Handy Dog

event was hosted by the Molesworth

and Otamatea Clubs, Morrie was one

of the first to offer his time to assist with

running this event which has become a

very popular part of our Northland

Centre Calendar. Whether it be setting

Tranznorth Otamatea Hawks Rugby Club

Excellent day for the Otamatea Hawks today 25

April when

we played Hikurangi in Whangarei.We had 2 good wins, giv-

ing the Reserves 4/4 and the Premiers ¾ - the best start to our

season in years, long may it continue. The Premiers on 36-12

and the Reserves 33-23. An awesome debut by Jordan Hyland

with excellent games from Mils Taukiuvea, Kainga Peselili

and Dan Hawkins. Logan Eager had his best game to date.

Well done, guys.

When children come together from

anywhere in the world, play and

express themselves freely together,

wonderful creations can emerge. Such

an ‘event’ happened when Grace, from

Kaiwaka met up with Jaya and Gabriel

from Forest Row Sussex England who

were visiting family in our “Little

Town of Lights”. Yes, Peter Martin

and Carolyn Hacker who live there

provided the environment and yes,

there was a ‘space’ available to fill

with ideas, but ultimately the large and

colourful 6x3 metre mural that flowed

onto a temporary studio/garage wall

was from these little natural artists

from opposite sides of the world. It

wasn’t long before the painting became

a ‘piece de resistance’ and a point of

focus for anyone visiting; young old

were drawn to add (with invitation of

course!) their touch of paint to enhance

the

nature

scene

imaginatively

expressing Kaiwaka’s landscape. Day

and night, sun and moon with

reflections, the Koru and even a part

time resident peacock were part of it

all.

Out of it all a pen pal friendship has

been born and Jaya, back in her Steiner

school in Forest Row next week will

be showing her class the creative

venture in Northland’s beautiful little

place of Kaiwaka and its smallest strip

of land linking two world oceans.

Believe me, that’s tiny in the eyes of

the other side of the world; not to

mention that it is also the strangest

desire to have a sunny North facing

house here, when of course it is the

opposite in the northern hemisphere!

The point here is that we are really all

‘artists’ in some way, but sometimes it

takes children to uplift and remind us

that we all have it within – as the world

GLOBAL CREATIVITY IN KAIWAKA

The reason the Air Force, Army, Navy and

Marines bicker amongst themselves is that

they don’t speak the same language. For

instance, take the simple phrase ‘secure the

building’. The Army will post guards around

the place. The Navy will turn out the lights and

lock the doors. The Marines will kill everybody

inside and set up a headquarters. The Air Force

will take out a 5 year lease with an option to to

buy.

Weather was kind for most of the trials,

apart from some short very wet showers on

the Saturday afternoon and wet they were,

sun came out, the sheep became very

biddable, changes were seen on the leader

boards.

The judges were Tom Manson from

Wairoa, David Sheild from Dannevirke and

Bo Milner from Dannevirke. Competitors

came from as far away as Ngamatea on the

Napier Taihape Road, Turangi, throughout

the King Country and Waikato regions.

Northland competitors were stoic and kept

the majority of the prize money north of

the bridge. Although slim were the

pickings for club members Scott McRae

with Toby in the Hunts and Sceata and

Cory in the Short head and yard did well,

Rob Hastie with Jack in the long head were

competitive in the run offs.

The club extends their thanks to: our

landlords the Paton family and their staff,

to the “kitchen team” who provided

workers and competitors with lovely food

and cups of tea and coffee over the three

days, the workers who at times were in the

dark at both ends of the day, John

Hargreaves' family for making their sheep

available once again, a joy to work at times

a challenge at other times.

MOLESWORTH SHEEP DOG TRIALS CLUB

NORTHTEC TRADES TRAINING

Our current three courses are running

really well. At the same time, we will

always work hard to be filling the next

courses by asking everyone to keep

getting the word spread out far and

wide.

Painting Level 4

Jarrod is taking this class. It is an 18

month course and as they cover

surfaces they also cover a lot of theory.

Painting on community projects and

some other local work plus some top

students have things looking good for

some full employment after graduating.

Certificate in Carpentry Level 4

This is a 12 month course. We are

fortunate to have John Collins as a

tutor. John has had 14 years teaching

trades, on top of his years on the job.

While taking his class through all of

the theory required to become

qualified carpenters, they will be

working on some more community

projects.

Elementary Construction Level 2

This course only runs for 6 months and

suits aspiring chippies and would-be

home fixers. In mid July we start the

next class so check us out.

On Monday 18 May we are going to

show off our revamped workshop and a

lot of skills. The really good students

and camaraderie amongst them make

these courses great to be a part of.

next intake of 12 students to another

fine tutor.

this crew so we can find them work
