NZ Herald 12 April 1938, page 8:
“Work in progress on the last section of the
new deviation between Kaiwaka and
Waipu on the main north highway.
Material from the hillside, which is being
cut back to widen the road, is to be used for
top dressing... Improvements finished and
in progress will ultimately result in the
provision of a first-class tourist road,
giving more rapid access to northern
beaches, the famous Waipoua kauri forest
and the popular deep-sea fishing resorts
around the Bay of Islands. In addition to
opening new scenic routes, the road will
also offer better facilities for freight and
stock transport.
“Until recent years North Auckland was
comparatively
isolated
because
of
unsatisfactory road conditions. Not many
years ago the journey to Whangarei
occupied all of eight hours under good
conditions, and perhaps two days if it
rained. Ten years have seen remarkable
changes, and modern motor transport
permits the average driver to
cover the distance of 115 miles
in little more than three hours.”
Walter Nash, Minister of
Finance at the time, cut the
ribbon to open the ‘Brynderwyn
deviation’ on 26 September
1938, just five months after the
photo of the road construction
was published.
That was almost 80 years ago!
Today NZTA is working to
‘improve’ the straighter northern
side, where they say drivers are
more likely to have an accident
because the road is faster; fewer
accidents happen on the windy
south side because the bends
force drivers to slow down. This
is a two-year project.

Squash
Our squash club is enjoying a resur
gence of numbers with many players
from surrounding clubs such as Wells
ford and Maungaturoto coming along
on our club nights. It's been great to
have a variety of competitors and there
have been some very exciting matches!
If you'd like to join our squash club,
simply pop along to our club night on
Mondays from 6pm and we'll sort you
out for a couple of matches.
Kids Disco
Jessika Grigg and Holly Anderson are
putting on a kids disco as a fundraiser
for our local junior rugby club, Eastern
United. The disco will be held at the
Sports Complex on Saturday 4
th
July
from 7 til 9pm, and will feature great
music and dancing, a lolly scramble,
glow items and games. Mark it in your
diary!
Boot Camp
Due to popular demand, Siobhan and
her team have starting up a new Boot
Camp. This Boot Camp is particularly
geared for beginners, although people
of all fitness levels are welcome. Ses
sions will be held at our grounds on
Mondays and Wednesdays at 6.30pm
and Fridays at 9.30am, sessions cost $7
with concession cards available.
Results start when you do! To register,
please phone Siobhan on 027 9791203.
Netball – Junior
This season Kaiwaka is fielding two
junior netball teams, both teams have
completed grading and are ready to
start their competition rounds.
Pictured below is young Pyper Buxton,
who is loving her first year of netball.
The two teams are ably captained by
Maia Fairburn and Ashley Greig – all
the best for the season.
Netball – Senior
Another successful win for our senior
netball team, Otamatea Ex. After a
shaky start, they managed to pull to
gether to beat Rodney College. Player
of the Day went to Katarina Maxwell
for her staunch defence in the
circle. Special thanks to our manager
Lish Reynolds for her vocal support.
Martial Arts
Our Martial Arts club is going well.
This week will see 47 Kempo students
attending gradings for the next level
up. They expect around 5-6 new blue
belts, who will be trying for Brown and
then black belts in the next 12 months,
so by this time next year we should
have the first Kaiwaka students trying
for
their
Black
belts.
The Tai Chi class also fares well, and
although they haven't had many new
students lately, they have a group of
around 10 super keen students who
have made tremendous progress with
their studies into the internal martial
arts.
All are showing huge improvements in
balance, stamina, general health, con
centration and learning. You are wel
come to come along to see what it's all
about, which is essentially developing
the mind, body and spirit to a level that
brings a life free of fear, a life experi
ence that involves reduced stress and
drama, and greatly improved health and
well being.
For Martial Arts queries, please email
black belt instructor Craig Bennetts on
Meeting
A Kaiwaka Sports Association meeting

June at
7pm in our JK Lounge, all welcome.
Thank you
Mark Ottaway does a great job looking
after the maintenance of the Sports
Complex but whenever he's away on

having their after-training showers...)
but a quick call to Bruce Ferguson and
the problem was solved. Many thanks

Students Step Up To Make
Maungaturoto Activity Park Dream
A Reality
With the support of both the
Maungaturoto Country Club and the
Maungaturoto Resident’s Association,
a team of teenagers from Otamatea
High School has stepped up to take on
the challenge of completing the
Maungaturoto Activity Park.
The team has started meeting regularly
and have finalised plans which will
give skaters, bike and scooter riders a
safe and fun place to play. They are
volunteering their time for the
betterment of the community and to
help youngsters from getting into
trouble by giving them something to
do. Currently there is only 1
playground in Maungaturoto and it
mainly suits younger children 2-6 years
old.
Eileen Parsons, member of both the
Maungaturoto Country Club and the
Maungaturoto Resident’s Association
said “I think it’s wonderful what these
children are doing, the more they take
ownership of the community, the better
it is for everyone”.
The park will cost $60,000 to construct
and the team are hopeful that with the
support of everyone in the community
they will raise the funds required, in
time to complete construction this
summer.

project,

What a Mad Merry May we had. Sorry
we were away for the first nine days so
am not sure what weather you had
other than 48mm of rain. My friendly
neighbours kept tabs on the rain for us
though. Thank you girls. The rest of
the month was very cold in places and
extremely windy. I notice it is getting
wet now with a bit of water lying
around. We are lucky to have shelter
whereas the poor animals just have to
put backs into the wind and try to keep
warm. Our last day of autumn was
rather pleasant though.
As I type this out we are only 16 days
away from the shortest day and we are
now into our first month of winter. Roll
on summer.
At our house for May this year we had
156mm of rain and May 2014 we had
64mm.
Our wettest May since 1987 was
2001 with 281mm and our driest May
was 2007 with 21mm.
We had rain on 14 days for May this
year and in 2014 we had rain on 7
days.
For the first 5 months this year we had
392mm rain and in 2014 we had
345mm.
Our wettest first 5 months of any year
since 1987 was 2011 with 854mm, and
the driest was 1989 with 108mm.
Did you know that 9 out of 10 living
things live in the ocean (take care
swimming). Until my next report
which will be almost mid winter take
care out there and keep warm. ~ Bev.
The shortest day or Southern
Hemisphere winter solstice for 2015
will be June 21, at 16:38 UTC.

An acquaintance of mine who is a physician told this story
about her then 4-year-old daughter.
On the way to preschool, the doctor had left her stethoscope on
the car seat, and her little girl picked it up and began playing
with it.
"Be still, my heart," thought my friend, "my daughter wants to
follow in my footsteps!"
Then the child spoke into the instrument: "Welcome to
McDonald's. May I take your order?"

Rugby – Junior
We are looking forward to hosting the
next Rodney/Otamatea JMB Rally Day
on Saturday 27
th
June. All five
competing
clubs
(Maungaturoto,
Paparoa, Wellsford, Tomarata and
Eastern United) will be playing at our
grounds, so it will be a busy morning!
The Under 7's will kick off at 9am,
Under 9's at 9.45am and Under 11's at
10.40am, so feel free to come along to
cheer on our young up-and-coming
players.
Rugby – Intermediate
The IMB season has been going well,
with several good wins for our Under
14's and Under 16's. There have been a
few injuries, but most players are
making good recoveries. Our thoughts
are with Jason Taiaroa as he recovers
from a head knock which will see him
sidelined for the rest of the season.
Come along to the Maungaturoto
Country Club this Saturday to catch
both IMB teams in action. For IMB
queries please contact Heather Lupton
on 021 841115.
Rugby – Senior
Our Hawks have had a great start to the
season – at the time of
writing, our Premiers
are sitting fifth on the
table and our Reserves
are first.
The
Hawks
next
match at our grounds
will be on Saturday
27
th
June, they will
take on Horahora with
the Reserves kicking

Otamatea
Hawks
The rollercoaster ride is
still on the " up" as the
Otamatea Hawks Prems
had a nail-biting 24-20 win over Mid
Western
at
Maungakaramea
on
Saturday 6th June. After piling on 24
good points in the 1st 30 minutes, one
would have thought we would have
won comfortably. Instead Mid Western
fought back to make it a very
entertaining 2nd half outscoring
Otamatea by a solitary converted try to
nil. The first half saw some great play
by the Ota forwards with Hoani Harris
and Kainga Pesalili to the fore. The
midfield of Jordan Hyland and Mils
Taukiuvea are proving to be a handful
for all teams breaking through at will.
An excellent cross-kick from Dan
Hawkins saw Tui Susu gather in to
score an excellent try, converted by
Dan, leading at that stage 24-6. The
2nd half had everything, excellent play,
missed opportunities, big defence, I’m
sure the good size support group would
have gone away thinking- phew!, that
was close, but I think Ota deserved the
victory. Next week is a
biggie, Wellsford at home
in Maungaturoto, the team
would like all supporters to
get along and cheer them
on in what is a very
important game. "Go the
Hawks"
The reserves has another
great win 15-6 they are
leading Top of the table.

A DOG’S TAIL TALE
Hi, my name is Jack and my boss and
his mate Scott decided to head to
gumboot territory (Taihape) where
there was a national dog trial
championship taking place. Now this
fellow Scott had his team of helpers -
Elle, Sceata, Toby and new boy Cory.
After teaching the new boy to pull his
horns in we all got along pretty good.
Luckily our bosses didn’t just put in
‘flash-harry’ gear for themselves, there
was a great lot of other stuff for us to
snack on.
This gumboot country is really steep,
nothing like Otioro Road, and the
temperature freezing.
Monday morning - snow, hail and
sleet, nothing like me and my canine
mates had seen before. My boss and
mate were using something called
single malt to combat the conditions.
Elle was the first to go in the
shorthead, this lady has a great
reputation but sheep don’t understand
and were less than cooperative. I was
the next to go on the same course - my
boss didn’t seem impressed with my
effort and kept talking about my
parentage.
Tuesday was Toby’s turn - he barks a
lot and is very good at it, made a
stunning job of taking his 3 lambs up
the hill until 5 metres to go, where
these lambs suddenly shot off the
course. Hero to zero in less time it
takes me to lift my back leg. On
Tuesday evening there was a meeting
for all the humans. Merv, from Kaitaia
was made a life member of the NZ
Association, and my boss, Rob, was
appointed to judge the Longhead in at
next year’s North Island champs in
Tarankai.
Me and my mates didn't win any
prizes, but 2 Northland dogs did very
well. Tess from Dargaville and her
boss Ian McKinnon got 2nd in the NZ
Longhead. Dice and her man Murray
Child from Maungakaramea got 4th in
the NZ Shorthead and were appointed
to captain the NZ Test Team (the Dog
Blacks).

Charles Clarke Littin
40340 - wounded
The Littin family were early Kaiwaka
settlers. Charles Clarke Littin, known
as Clarke, was the first son of Charles
and Frances Jane. Clarke and his twin
sister Honour were born 12 May 1896.
He went to Kaiwaka School, and later
became a farmer with the family in Te
Hana.
Private C.C. Littin’s next of kin in his
records is his brother Percival Walter
Littin of Kaiwaka. He left Wellington
on 12 February1917 and arrived in
Plymouth on 2 May 1917. He was at
Sling for the next month and went
from there to Etaples where he joined
the 2
nd
Battalion Auckland Regiment
in July 1917. Clarke was wounded by a
machine gun bullet to the foot in
France on 30 August 1918 and was
admitted to a Clearing Station in Rouen
1 September, then transported to the
No.2 NZ General Hospital in Walton,
England. He embarked from Liverpool
to NZ on the Maunganui, 2 December
1918 – “Discharged in consequence of
being no longer physically fit for War
Service”.
Clarke took up farming again and
married Lucy Ramsbottom in 1919
(who died in 1935), and then Linda
Matheson in 1940. He died in 1952,
aged 56 and is buried in the Wellsford
Cemetery, in the RSA section
.

Healthy Safe
Relationships
Featuring Lesley Elliott
Would you or your family members
recognise the warning signs of an
unhealthy or unsafe relationship?
Would you know how to get help?
On June 24 Leslie Elliott will be
speaking, along with others, about
relationships and the warning signs to
look out for in unhealthy, unsafe
relationships, and where to go for help.
Leslie set up the Sophie Elliott
Foundation, after the tragic death of
her daughter Sophie at the hands of her
former boyfriend, to raise awareness
among all young people, their friends,
families and the community of the
signs of partner abuse.
Libby Jones of Paparoa says “the
evening is especially aimed at
teenagers, their parents and other
community members, so we all know
what to look out for to help keep our
young people safe”. Libby has been a
Family Violence champion in the
Otamtaea Rodney area and is a
member of Rural Women NZ, who are
bringing Lesley to Maungaturoto.
This FREE event is funded by Rural
Women NZ in conjunction with
Ministry of Social Development, and
the local It’s Not Ok campaign It will
be held on Wednesday June 24 at
Otamatea High School Hall in
Maungaturoto from 7 – 9pm. Light
supper will be provided.

ZONTA
On 25th May, the Mangawahi Zonta Group
celebrated their 5th birthday with a cake and party
games like pass the parcel and musical chairs. The
photo below shows the cutting of the birthday cake with the
current president, Jan Barnett (left) Liz Holsted (middle) who
started the group and the Lt Governer of Zonta NZ Janet
Hope (right). Liz Holsted gave a speech on the origins of the
group and Janet Hope praised the successes of the small rural
group and wished it many more happy birthdays in the
future.
Liz Holsted started the Mangawhai Zonta Group 5 years ago
as she had moved into the area and missed her old Zonta
group so much she decided to set up her own one. From then
membership has waxed and waned but the raising of funds
and determination to help local and international women
continues.
The Mangawhai Zonta Group will be helping the Rural
Women NZ in Otamatea with their evening on "Supporting
Safe Relationships" on Wednesday 24th June at Otamatea
High School in Maungaturoto
from 7-9pm with speaker Leslie
Elliot talking about her daughter
Sophie Elliot and the "Loves-Me
-Not" program currently running
in schools.
The next fund raising event for
the Mangawhai Zonta Group is
the Quiz night on 26th July to
raise money for the annual Spirit
of Adventure scholarship given
to a young women from the
Bream Bay District. Last year's
recepient, Briar Lomas, will be
speaking of her experiences on
her voyage at the next club
meeting on June 22nd.

MUSEUM
A Glimpse of War in
our Waters
Few realise how close World War 2
came to New Zealand. Yet 75 years
ago this month, German mines laid
across the approaches to Auckland
Harbour sank the luxury passenger
liner ‘Niagara’ and led to the deepest
salvage of gold bullion the world had
ever known.
The German raider Orion disguised as
a merchant vessel, laid the minefield.
On the evening of 13 June 1940, 228
mines were laid in deep water between
Whangarei Heads and Great Barrier
Island, crossing the main shipping
channels used in the Hauraki Gulf.
In the early morning of 19 June 1940,
with 351 passengers and crew aboard,
the Niagara was the first casualty of the
minefield. This was the first enemy
action in New Zealand waters during
World War 2, and the first sinking of
the war in the Pacific.
Thanks to calm seas and the orderly
evacuation of survivors to lifeboats,
there were no casualties as the Niagara
gradually sank to a depth of 122
metres, north of the Hen & Chicken
Islands.
Sadly, 11 months later the minefield
claimed a second victim when the
minesweeper Puriri hit another mine 13
kilometres off Bream Head near
Whangarei. Rocked by a violent
explosion, the Puriri sank so quickly
that no lifeboats could be launched and
5 people were lost. They were the only
casualties of the war in NZ waters.
The new Mangawhai Museum is
marking the 75th anniversary of the
Niagara sinking on Saturday 20 June at
4.00pm, with a special presentation at
the museum by Keith Gordon of
Tutukaka. Keith, author of ‘Deepwater
Gold’ about the disaster, has been
directly involved with the shipwreck
since 1989, when the first dives on the
wreck were undertaken by Keith’s
remotely-operated underwater robot
vehicle (ROV). His illustrated talk will
cover the history of the Niagara, the
German raider Orion, the sinking and
subsequent salvage of gold from the
wreck, plus the exploration of the
wreck in more recent times. Keith has
been
involved
with
underwater
exploration for more than 60 years and
is a Fellow of the New York Explorers
Club.
Limited tickets are available for the
anniversary event at $20.00 each,
which is supported by a special
exhibition in the museum, nibbles and
beverages. The event is from 4pm until
6pm.
To secure your ticket, please contact
the manager, Emma Gray via
manager@mangawhai-museum.org.nz
or telephone (09)431-4645. Tickets are
also available for purchase from the
reception desk at Mangawhai Museum.
