OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL BALL
Otamatea High School’s annual
ball was held on Friday 17 July,
with the theme of Willy Wonka...
“Awesome awesome awesome -
that’s the only thing I feel like I
can say! Big thank you to my
crew for helping me put this
whole night together. I had a
vision set for the ball and without
my little Umpa Lumpa helpers
through out the week, I don't
think I could have done it. Big
thank you to the teachers who
helped me out behind the scenes
and
the
people
in
the
Maungaturoto community who
donated items such as boxes from
Fergus 100% electrical and
Richard Moore who donated his
time towards helping us create
such an amazing entrance way for
this evening. I would like to thank
my parents who have helped me
so much, running me places to get
items and even purchasing items.
Congratulations to Calvin Craig
awarded King of the Ball and his
beautiful looking Queen Nicole
Hinch. Jessica Linton was
crowned Belle for the evening
along side our Beau Sonny
Nathan. Princess went to the
beautiful lady in camo Samantha
Allen and the rising star Ashton
Coates for Prince. Best Dressed
went to the lady in gold Maddy
Garnett and Dancing King went
to Sok Chiang. And lastly, I
would like to thank the band
Kurfew
for
the
great
entertainment
and
Deft
Photography for producing some
amazing photos. Hope to see the
next Otamatea balls carry on to
be as successful as this one has
been.

ABOUT TOWN
.........
Lovely to see all the ball photos -
more than 800 were posted to
Facebook shortly after the ball. Join
the Maungaturoto group there to see
them. Quite an effort was put into it
all, especially the gowns.
We’re very disappointed that a
vandal ruined one of the KSA
sports fields the other weekend.

The petition to reduce the speed

MPs.
The shiny new kitchen installed at
the Three Furlongs Bar & Grill is
stunning. It will be in use very
soon.

This month’s cold snap has broken a
swathe of temperature records
around the country.
NIWA data shows at more than 30
weather stations from Cape Reinga in
the north to Stewart Island, had daily
maximum temperature recordings that
were either the lowest ever recorded,
or at least in the top four coldest for
July.
At South West Cape, the southernmost
point on Stewart Island the temperature
reached just 5.2°C on July 6. This was
the third lowest for July for this
location since records began in 1991.
At the opposite end of the country at
Cape Reinga the temperature was a
comparably balmy 10.8°C on July 10,
but this was the lowest daily maximum
July temperature there since 1971.
Lowest daily maximum temperatures
were also recorded at Kaitaia, Port
Taharoa,
Waione
and
Ngawi.
Suspicions that the early mornings for
the first half of July have been
especially chilly have also been
confirmed at several locations.
In particular Northlanders have
been feeling the cold with Kaitaia,
Kerikeri and Warkworth all recording
the lowest July temperature on record.
Kaitaia’s
lowest
daily
minimum was 0°C on July 11,
Kerikeri’s -0.7°C on July 12
and Warkworth’s -2.3°C also
on July 12.
Te Kuiti plummeted to -4.9°C
overnight on July 13, marking
it as the coldest July
temperature for the town since
records began in 1959. In
fact, Te Kuiti has observed its
two-lowest July temperatures
on record over the past three
days: -4.5°C was recorded on
July 11 which is its second-
lowest
July
temperature.
And in Greymouth -2.6°C on July 9
put it in the record books as the coldest
July temperature there since records
begin in 1947.
NIWA climate scientist Gregor Macara
said the cold weather was caused by a
cold southerly flow that brought icy
showers and snow last week, followed
by a high pressure system bringing
clear skies and little wind to most of
the country.
“Clouds act like a blanket at night and
trap heat over the Earth’s surface,
whereas clear skies enable enhanced
night-time cooling as this heat escapes
the atmosphere. This process has
contributed to the severe frosts
observed lately,” he said.
From Kaiwaka:
Pictured below is Wendy’s temperature
gauge in Marshall Road, taken on
Saturday 11 July, showing -3
o
C at
7:21am. The following night (11th-
12th) Derek Mason in Hakaru reported
seeing -6
o
C at his place.
In the 1960s locals report frost(s) so
cold it killed the mangroves in Kaira
Creek (Oneriri).
And in last week’s news, scientists are
predicting a mini ice age in about
15years time.

MRS ANGUS STEWART.
Another link with the early days of
North Auckland has been severed by
the death of Mrs. [Margaret] Stewart,
aged 89, wife of Mr. Angus Stewart, of
Mangawai. She was born in Prince
Edward Island, Canada, leaving the
island at the end of 1858, in company
with her husband, for New Zealand, in
the brig Prince Edward, navigated by
the late Captain Nolan. The voyage via
Pernumbuco, Brazil, and the Cape of
Good Hope, occupied 160 days. After
sighting the North Cape the little vessel
was nine days tacking down the coast
against
head-winds,
arriving
in
Auckland on May 12, 1859. Mr. and
Mrs Stewart's first home was at Little
Omaha where they spent four years,
then removing to Kaiwaka, where they
took up a block of land in the heart of
the forest. All the hardships of
pioneering work were experienced, and
in later years a home was made at
Mangawai [sic]. Mrs Stewart enjoyed
wonderful health up to about a week
prior to her death. Her husband
survives her, being in his 82nd year.
Mrs. Stewart was very highly esteemed
by a large circle of friends and leaves
two daughters, Mrs. E. O. Ewart, Te
Rehunga, and Mrs. T. Judd, Mount
Eden, and three sons, Messrs. Malcolm
Stewart, Kaiwaka, Alexander Stewart,
Mangawai, and Charles Stewart, Mount
Albert, 20 grandchildren and 27 great
grandchildren.
Then just three months later:
OBITUARY.
New Zealand Herald, 28 April 1925,
Page 10
MR. ANGUS STEWART.
The death occurred in February of Mrs.
Angus Stewart, of Mangawai, at the
age of 89, and last week she was
followed bv her husband, aged 91 years
and five months. The late Mr. Stewart
was born in Prince Edward Island in
1833 and married in 1857. A year later
he and his wife sailed for New Zealand
in the brig Prince Edward. The voyage,
via Brazil and the Cape of Good Hope,
took 160 davs, the vessel arriving in
Auckland on May 12 1859. Mr.
Stewart and his wife settled first at
Little Omaha, and later at Kaiwaka. In
recent years they resided at Mangawai.
Mr. Stewart was a man of magnificent
physique and of such sterling qualities
as to win and maintain the esteem of all
who knew him...
NB. Kaiwaka was established in 1859.

KWMH Honours Board WW1: CE SUTHERLAND
Charles Edward Sutherland 23/1474,
known as Chas, was the adopted
nephew of Mrs Mary Ross of Kaiwaka.
He went to school at Kaiwaka Primary
and became a farmer.
He left Wellington for the Suez on 13
November 1915 as a Corporal in the
NZ Rifle Brigade. He had a short stint
in hospital at Abbassia with the mumps
in March 1916, then from there he went
to the Western Front.
Chas was killed in action just two days
short of the ‘pull out’ of the Battle of
the Somme, and is buried at Rue-David
Military Cemetery, Fleurbaix. He was
21 years old.
His death was noted in Christchurch’s
Press newspaper on 1st December
1916, page 8, in The Roll of Honour,
including Mrs M Ross as his aunt.
The Western Front, 1916:
But all that my mind sees
Is a quaking bog in a mist — stark,
snapped trees,
And the dark Somme flowing.
Vance Palmer (1885–1959),‘The
farmer remembers the Somme’
A truly nightmarish world greeted the
New Zealand Division when it joined
the Battle of the Somme in mid-
September 1916. The division was part
of the second big push of the offensive,
designed to crack the German lines
once and for all.
Fifteen thousand members of the
division went into action. Nearly 6000
were wounded and 2000 lost their
lives. Over half the New Zealand
Somme dead have no known grave.
They are commemorated on the New
Zealand Memorial to the Missing in
Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, near
Longueval. One of these men returned
home to New Zealand in November
2004; his remains lie in the tomb of the
Unknown Warrior outside New
Zealand’s National War Memorial.
The battle was a pivotal event that laid
the basis for the Allied victory in the
First World War. But ten decades on,
the numbers still have the power to
shock. At the end of 4½ months of
fighting, up to 1.2 million men had
been killed or wounded. There were
about 8500 casualties for each of the
141 days of conflict. But not all days
were alike; some were worse than
others. The opening day of the
offensive, 1 July 1916, was the worst
day in British military history: 20,000
men were killed and another 40,000
wounded. By the end of the campaign
on 18 November 1916, the Allies had
advanced, at most, 12 km into German-
held territory – about the distance a fit
young soldier could run in an hour.
