Sun: 9am-5pm
On Monday 20th July 2015 Otamatea
High School held a blessing ceremony
to receive a special taonga (treasure)
which had been gifted to the school.
The taonga is a waharoa (gateway)
which has been designed and carved by
three students of Te Wananga o
Aotearoa, Mangere Campus. One of
the carvers Jay Simmonds works as the
Grounds Person at the school four days
a week and studies whakairo (Maori
carving) every Tuesday with the other
two carvers, William Theodore and
Bryce Woollen. This is their first
collaborative piece to gift to an
organisation.
They
are
working
towards completing their Diploma in
Whakairo by the end of this year.
The intricate carvings which make up
the piece represent many facets of a
Maori worldview. The Maori concept
of time (Te Kore, Te Po, Te Ao
Marama) is represented through the
stories told in the carvings. The mask
at the front of the entranceway (Tane
Tokorangi) symbolises the separation
from darkness into light and therefore
as one enters through the waharoa they
move
into
a
new
state
of
enlightenment. The mask which faces
the mountain Pukeareinga is Tane Te
Wananga, which represents the three
baskets
of
knowledge
(sacred
knowledge, ancestral knowledge, life’s
knowledge). The traditional colours of
red, white and black are used in the
waharoa as well as the blue of
Otamatea High School.
The moving ceremony that was
attended by staff, students and
community members was led by Matua
Rau Morgan (pictured right). Students
responded with the new school haka;
this haka is also based on the Maori
concept of time as well as
acknowledging the significance of the
Kaipara region. The carvers were
initially unaware that the haka and
carvings were aligned; it was clearly
meant to be. In an assembly following
the blessing the carvers explained the
meaning of the waharoa as well as
their own personal journeys.
The symbolism of entering through a
waharoa is about passing from one
state to another, similar to what
happens when people are welcomed
onto a marae. For Otamatea High
School this symbol is also about
being a welcoming place, a place for
the whole community. The waharoa
will be used in the future during
powhiri and on other special
occasions. As the piece is three
dimensional people will be
encouraged to interact with it
and
to
understand
its
significance. As receivers of
the taonga Otamatea High School are
now entrusted with its care and
upholding the principles contained in
the piece.
This year some Otamatea High School
students have begun studying whakairo
and the school is hoping to expand this
provision over the next few years.

Term two finished on a high with many
successes
for
our
students.
Congratulations to the students who
participated in the Nga Manu Korero
Speech Competition, especially Tasha
Perrett, who came first in her section.
These students will be travelling to
Wellington in September for the
national finals. Another success at the
end of term two was our boys’ football
team who made it into the finals
against Bream Bay College, narrowly
missing out on the top spot through a
last minute goal in extra time.
The Matariki Concert and Lesley Elliot
presentation [see Bugle 13] were both
well
attended
and
successful
community events. We will be bringing
the ‘Loves Me Not’ programme which
has been developed by The Sophie
Elliott Foundation into the school for
future senior students to be participate
in; all students can then benefit from
this important and powerful message.
The 2015 Willy Wonka School Ball
[see Bugle 14] was a tremendous
success with students all seeming to
enjoy themselves. The PTCA catered
spectacularly as always, and the
chocolate fountains were a real
favourite. The year 10 umpa lumpas
did a wonderful job of getting into the
spirit of the occasion serving drinks
whilst dressed in white boiler suits,
green hair and orange faces. This year
the traditional ballroom dancing was
interspersed with old time and
contemporary tunes played by the
band. The hall was well decked out
with simple but effective decorations
and the added touch of thousands of
white fairy lights made it look
amazing.
Well
done
Michelle
Schimanski and the Ball Committee for
putting on a wonderful event which
will be remembered for years to come.
The beginning of term three got off to a
wonderful start with the moving
blessing ceremony of the new waharoa
which has been gifted to the school; a
full account is detailed later in the
newsletter.
Over the holidays Lyndsay Whitehead
was appointed as the new Principal for
Matakohe School. Congratulations on
this great achievement. She will start
this position in term four.
~Rachel Clothier-Simmonds, Principal
1st XI Football 2015
The 2015 season was expected to be
one of rebuilding a side for the future
after losing 6 players from the Division
One and unbeaten side of the previous
season. The season began with a
grading tournament in Whangarei.
Here the team won two matches
against Kaitaia and Rodney College
2nd XI but also lost to Bream Bay and
KeriKeri. The next week allowed us to
play a warm up match against Rodney
College 1st XI who had been placed in
the division above. The team settled
well and managed to hold the
opposition to a 2-1 defeat, but there
was enough effort and a good attitude
to show that the team had the attributes
for a good season.
The team consisted of some senior year
13 players to give some strength and
composure to proceedings. In defence,
Dylan Sims, Calvin Craig and Kyle
Taylor provided a sturdy barrier for
teams to try and break through. In goal
Connor van Dalsum improved with
each game and pulled off a spectacular
save against Huanui to keep us in the
game.
The midfield was made up of youthful
skill and agility. Josh Nishitani-Hart,
excelled in the centre of midfield aided
by the ever improving Ben Morley.
Around this central pivot players like
Travis Flannagan, Simon Parker,
Mathias Damsted, Tyler Flannagan
were able to play with confidence and
composure knowing they had quality
players to support them.
In attack the team were blessed with
two quality strikers who complimented
each other. Cameron Gill benefitted
from the excellent support play of
Samuel Stephens, with Cameron
scoring 15 goals in the league
including 4 hatricks. Other players in
the team were Lochy Steedman and
Blake Sims who both settled into
defensive roles next to the senior
players and have

Year
9’s
Change
Technology
Rotations
After two terms, year 9’s finished their
first technology rotations for the year.
As it is our school’s policy to provide
students with a wide range of subjects
in the junior years, students are able to
build up skills in four out of five
different technology areas. Students in
the workshops do either metal or wood
technology.
In the wood workshop students
designed and made their own shields.
The metal work projects were wind
vanes of various shapes and forms all
uniquely designed.
In digitech, students’ last project was to
develop a website with their own
movie reviews.
Classroom bags, boxer shorts and soft
toys are the projects students made in
the textiles technology room, while
students in food learnt about and tested
recipes for a healthy breakfast as one
unit. On the last day of term they baked
puddings. ~Elizabeth van den Berg

Matariki was celebrated with a full

the theme, a new year, a new start, over
100 performers of kapahaka, singing
and speeches came from Waipu
Primary, Rodney College, Kaiwaka
Primary, Te Kura Kaupapa o
Ngāringaomatariki and Otamatea High
School to bring in the Māori New Year
with a bang. “Having our local schools
showcase their Māori skills and pride
together is the main point of the
concert,” says Kelsey Orford an ex-
student and presenter. It is was a highly
entertaining night to raise funds for a
trip to Wellington in support of our
Ngā Manu Kōrero champion, Tasha
Perrett who won the Tā Turi Kara
junior English section at the recent
regional speech competition. She will
represent Te Tai Tokerau in the
illustrious and highly competitive

KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSOCIATION
Rugby – junior
We are looking forward to hosting the
Rodney/Otamatea JMB Rally Day on
Friday 21st August – this will be the
last Rally Day for the season. Thank
you to everyone who sponsored JMB
children for their Pass The Ball-a-thon
this Saturday – your support is
appreciated.
Rugby – intermediate
Our two IMB teams, Under 14s and
Under 16s teams, are both looking
good for securing spots in their
semifinals. Otamatea went on to win
the match 19–8.
Our IMB teams will hold their
prizegiving at the Sports Complex on
Sunday 23rd August at noon, this will
be a combined prizegiving with the
senior Hawks. All players, family and
supporters are very welcome to attend.
Rugby – Senior
Both of our senior Hawks teams, the
Reserves and the Premiers, have had a
great season. The Premiers made it to
the semi-finals. The Reserves secured
their spot in the finals at Toll Stadium,
and were just pipped at the post 16–18.
One highlight of the season, has been
the hearty encouragement from the
supporters – large, vocal crowds have
turned out to cheer on the boys, and the
teams have appreciated it.
The Hawks prizegiving will be
combined with the IMB prizegiving
and will be held at the Sports Complex
on Sunday 23rd August at noon. All
welcome.
Netball – Junior
The junior netball season is now into
Round 2. Both of our teams, Kaiwaka 1
and Kaiwaka 2 are doing very well –
some potential Silver Ferns in there
maybe?
Netball – OHS
Well done to Jodie Bennetto for
organising a successful mixed netball
tournament at our courts last weekend.
The weather wasn’t the best, but that
didn’t deter everyone from having a
fun
time.
Proceeds
from
the
tournament went to the Otamatea High
School AIMS team who will be
travelling to Tauranga next month.
Netball – Senior
Otamatea-Ex is sitting at the top of the
table. Last week they played Otamatea
High School, winning 59 – 38. Player
of the Day went to Taira Ohara
Lambert for shooting 90% and for her
speedy dodges around the circle.
Fast Five Netball
Who is keen to give Fast Five netball a
go? I’m going to run a social, mixed
module with games held in the KSA
gymnasium on Sunday afternoons
starting 30th August. Only $100 team
fee ($10 per player) and there will be
prizemoney up for grabs! Men, women
and kids welcome. A registration form
is on the Kaiwaka Fast Five Facebook
page, or contact me and I will email it
to you. This will be a fun, friendly
module, so why not get a group
of mates together and give it a try.
Bar Upgrade
Look how awesome our new bar
display unit looks! The funding for the
unit came from a grant because we sold
30 tickets to the speech on the Battle of
Te-Ika-a-Ranganui (thanks to Holly
Anderson for selling the tickets). And
thank you to Mark Ottaway for
installing the unit.
Gymnastics
Stephanie Brown will step down as
President of our gymnastics club at the
end of the year. Stephanie has done a
wonderful job of running gymnastics
for the last 8 years and we are very
appreciative of the time and effort she
has put into the club. Stephanie and her
family members have covered most of
the positions within the club –
administration, equipment set up,
coaching etc. So for the club to
continue in 2016 we need help! You
can read more about the clubs request
in the gymnastics ad in this edition of
the Bugle – we don’t want this
fabulous club to fold due to lack of
support – so please don’t hesitate to
step up.
Youth Night
Have you heard that there is now a
Fitness and Fun evening for children
on Friday evenings? This is an event
run by our Fitness Centre President
Siobhan Cole and the Kaiwaka Family
Church. It is held in our gymnasium
every Friday from 6pm. This is for
boys and girls under 18 years old, all
fitness levels are welcome, gold coin
donation. Here is some of the Facebook
feedback after last Fridays session:
“My young guy had an absolute blast,
thank you so much for providing this
for the kids” - Tina “My son really
enjoyed it, he came and said it was
great, way better than he thought it
would be!” - Rebecca, “My boys had
so much fun, they can’t wait for next
week” - Lorena, “My boys always love
it, thanks Siobhan, Paul and Shona” -
Lish. If you have children, and are
interested in bringing them along to our
gymnasium for a fun, active evening,
remember to write it in your diary.

HAKARU RSA WOMEN’S SECTION
A New Venture
The Anglican Church is doing
something a bit non traditional in the
Mangawhai and Wellsford area. They
are “sharing” a minister. Rev Wayne
Thornton was recently installed as
Priest-in-Charge of these two separate
Mission Districts and and will be
dividing his time between them:
Tuesdays and Wednesdays he will be
in Mangawhai; Thursdays and Fridays
he will be in Wellsford; and he will
take services on alternate Sundays.
Wayne has moved with his wife Kim
from Motueka at the top of the South
Island, where he was Vicar of the
Motueka Anglican Parish. Yes it is a
long way, but he comes out of a sense
of calling that this is the place God
intends him to be, to minister to the
people of the area. They both feel at
home in this part of the country.
Although Wayne was born in Dunedin,
he moved to Hastings when he was
three and grew up there where he
met Kim and they married there.
Together they have lived and
worked in Taupo, Gisborne,
Napier and Hastings before
moving to Motueka and are the
parents of three Massey graduates.
Wayne is looking forward to this
new challenge, which is quite
different from being a Vicar. He
will use all his experience of thirty
years in parish ministry as he
seeks to work with the people to
enable them to grow and extend
the ministry of the church in the
surrounding community. This is an
exciting new venture for the parent
body, the Auckland Anglican
Diocese,
as
well
as
the
congregations here.
In one sense there are no models
but there is a guiding vision of using
the buildings, resources and talents
under Wayne's leadership to share the
Good News of God's love and grace in
Jesus Christ.
Besides his work in the church Wayne
has been a Chaplain for St John, which
he hopes to continue in this area. He is
a keen photographer, having recently
been President of the Motueka Camera
Club. He also has interests in model
railways and creative writing. Music is
another thing he is keen on - having a
wide collection and he plays guitar and
drums. Wayne says he is hoping to
develop his fishing abilities and sample
the local Book Fair. Together Wayne
and Kim enjoy visitors, playing board
games, quizzes and sharing fun and
fellowship. They are looking forward
to this new venture God has called
them to in this beautiful part of the
world with its rich history and growing
community.
ST JOHN’S ANGLICAN CHURCH
Heather, Lena and Valerie attended the
Northern Districts Women's Section
Conference on 14 July at Kaikohe, then
Lena our delegate and Heather and
Bettie Marchant attended the National
Conference at Tauranga and had an
interesting and enjoyable time. D.J.
Clarke the NZ President of RSA spoke
on attending the Gallipoli service and
Lena said it seemed like they were all
there and it was very emotional and
real. Lena was elected to the NWA
committee for the 3rd time in a row,
congratulations Lena.
Five members attended Birkenhead
RSA Women's Section birthday on 21
July, where there were about 12 other
sections invited each with their own
tables, plus the ex WRNZNS members.
We were made very welcome and Lena
won a door prize, the entertainment
was excellent, (we could have done
with a few males to dance with!) the
meal prior to that was fabulous. Thank
you Lena for driving us down and back
safely.
Thursday 23 July, instead of
having a monthly meeting,
we all travelled to Paparoa
Hotel for a mid-Christmas
Dinner; we had a lovely meal and a
happy time together. Thanks to Heather
for organising it all.
The Air Force catering is coming up on
22 August, just a reminder to those
who volunteered to help on the day.
We have started organising our
birthday on 29 Oct; we need baking
and produce and knitting and sewing
for the sales table to give the visitors
plenty to choose from.
Don’t forget we still have our delicious
roasts on the second Friday of the
month, all the more the merrier.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 27
August; meeting commences at 1:30pm
sharp. New members are most
welcome, just ring our secretary Jan on
4314512 if you wish to know more.

We are preparing for the school cross

Our students go for a practice run
every day. The courses are quite long
and it would be a big advantage if they
got an extra practice in after school
around your home area too. It is an

you are able to help please get a

Kaiwaka School PTA
Calf Rearing Scheme
To all past, present and future families
of Kaiwaka School, as a member of the
community we need your support. The
PTA has a calf rearing scheme which
raises funds that contributes to the
purchase of resources for our children.
How it works…
• We get in touch with farmers around
July, August to see if they are able to
rear a calf that year.
• In November we contact you and
arrange to pick up and sell the calf
through another farmer or a stock
agent.
• Kaiwaka School will receive the
funds and will send a donation invoice
to the seller and purchaser.

The 2015 season has come to an end.
We would like to thank our main
sponsor Tranznorth for their support
this season and are glad to say that they
will be with us again next season.
Thank you Scott.
We would also like to thank our other
sponsor and supporters because
without them we would not have the
fantastic club that we have. We hope
that you will be there with us in 2016.
2015 has been a great season our
Premier side, who made it to the semi-
finals for the first time in 20 years; we
played Mid Northern on a very muddy
paddock at Hukerenui which took its
toll on our boys resulting in a heart
breaking loss. Mid Northern went on to
lose 29-12 to Wellsford in the finals at
Toll stadium last weekend.
Our Reserve grade have had a sterling
season making it to the finals at Toll
Stadium playing Mid Northern, this
was the first time most of our boys had
played on the park, a big occasion; they
put on a great display of rugby but lost
18-16. We are proud of our guys.
We also like to congratulate our
players Dan Hawkins, Matt Moulds,
Shane Neville, and Jordan Hyland for
making the Northland ITM Cup side.
Dan has also signed for the Melbourne
Rebels for 2016, and Matt will Captain
Northland with Dan Pryer. We will
follow these guys with interest and see
then back with the Hawks 2016.
We have had players sign with us from
Italy, Australia, Fiji, and Tonga as well
as players from Auckland and
Whangarei, and not the least our local
boys thanks for the time and
commitment that you all showed this
year. It shows in how far the club had
come - see you all next season.

We have another pleasant day for the
1st of August - it is good to see.
We have well passed the mid-winter
bit now and heading to summer.
August can be very wet so watch out
for that. It would be a good time to put
in an extra water tank for the summer.
I have seen water tankers carting water
around Mangawhai and believe
Maungaturoto water trucks are very
busy as well so be warned.
Our July was, as you might say, rather
cold. Wow those frosts were great and
should have killed off a lot of bugs
although I still see green caterpillar
eating my kale. We recorded a frost
minus 3 degrees and may
have been a bit lower if I
had got out early enough to go check
it. It would have been a couple of
degrees lower than that in Kaiwaka.
Out at the Hakaru Hall they had a frost
minus 6 degrees. Sounds to me like
memories of my childhood. That cold
wind was very persistent for long
enough and had a lot of people
hibernating as it was the chill factor
that made it worse. Then after all that
we have had these beautiful days. The
heavy rains that were promised did not
arrive and that is not a good sign
although we did get a bit and out at
Mangawahi it was horizontal rain and
torrential. They had a tornado tear
through the Heads township - trees
were down on the golf course and a big
mess.
For July at our house this year we had
82mm rain and in July 2014 we had
331mm. Hard to believe but true.
For the first 7 months we had 568mm
of rain and 2014 we had 945mm. Our
wettest July since 1987 was 1998 with
602mm and the driest was 1993 33mm.
My gardening tip: Before planting
lettuce dig a trench and fill with fresh
grass clippings. Cover with soil and
water well. The heat from the clippings
plus the compost value will provide
rich rewards. Clip the bottom of the tap
root. We have found that lettuces love
growing with the roses.
Remember never put off till tomorrow
that which can be done today. Now
there is a challenge!
Till next month. Regards, Bev
