After their triumph in the Northland
Handy Dog event at Otioro Road, then
the second placing for Duncan and
Dodge in the North Islands at
Taumarunui, it was off to the New
Zealand Championship at Gore.
Dodge flew as excess baggage, not
bad for a 30 kilo-plus dog. Luckily
Duncan’s boss has a ute in
Queenstown, which the Northern boys
had the use of. Dodge didn’t seem to
be phased by the experience. In the
final they showed the rest of New
Zealand that they were able to handle
the Southland ewes better than the rest
of the competitors, finishing with 98.5
to win the Tux New Zealand title, the
first time this event has been won by
someone from the North.
I know of two other locals that have
won NZ titles at their chosen sport,
plus one pairing. Carol [now] King,
Marathon, Sue Wightman, Bowls,
Nelson and Wallace Hastie, Double
handed sawing. Are there any more
that you know of? ~Rob H

REMEMBER WHEN...
Kaiwaka looked like this? 1955, when the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall was
just a couple of years old, and the main road north went up Gibbons Road.

WEATHER
Happy New Year to my faithful
followers. Welcome folk to another
calendar. We have already turned one
month over. About 11months to
Christmas now. (sorry about that it just
had to be said).
At our house in January 2016 we had
139mm and for January 2015 we had
18mm. January 2016 we had rain on 10
days of the month and January 2015 we
had rain on 5 days of the month. Our
driest January since 1987 was 2013
with 10mm, and the wettest was 1989
with 343mm. So naturally, for the 1st
month of 2016 we had 139mm of rain.
The wind and cloud in January was not
very welcome but later in the month we
got the sun we needed and it was hot.
We reached up in the 30s at our house.
Our plum tree looks very Christmassy
this January - we have never so many
plums on our tree for many a year and
the birds were looking for a New Year
feast. So to deter them we hung old
CDs in the tree and plenty of tinsel. Not
many plums eaten by the birds. We
made sure they have had plenty of
water available. (Sorry neighbours,
they enjoyed your beautiful plums).
Also to keep the white butterfly away
from the broccoli and kale etc I have
hung tinsel on a line. You can also use
aluminium foil dishes. The butterfly do
not like the light shining on these
things as they move in the breeze. Just
remember, if you think you have
problems, somewhere in the world
someone has just run out of
champagne.
Take care out there. . Bev
A new year full of new beginnings for
so many. We are full of ideas for the
year ahead and hope to see you take
part in some of things coming our way
in Kaiwaka.
The centre is open to all Monday,
Wednesday and Friday as a place to
meet, share resources, teach, learn,
have a cuppa, eat, use the wifi or the
printer, ask a question, listen, be
listened to; in fact whatever is needed
by the community. Run by Kaiwaka
Cares, the centre runs on the basis of
usage and from koha. The goal is for
the Centre to be a service for the
community
of
Kaiwaka
and
surrounding areas.
We are currently open from 10am to
2pm. Kaiwaka Care's current team
have been running things since it's
opened. If you haven’t been in the
centre is staffed by Janine, Helen,
Scott, and Iris. Two new volunteers are
joining us over the coming weeks,
Beth and Emma. Please pop in and
make them feel welcome. If you have
been thinking of volunteering some
time just pop in and talk to a member
of the team.
Kate’s Place
If you have never ventured into Kate’s
Place it is a wonderful resource for our
community. Run by the ever so lovely
Yvonne, there are consulting rooms for
visiting practitioners including IRD,
Osteo, Physio, Life Coach, Reiki etc.
Space is available for use by anyone
who has a need to meet with someone
for treatment or discussion. Talk to
Yvonne about your needs today on
#4312661.
Fibre Fun
A new group is starting up based from
the centre this month on Sunday 21
February 2016. Run by Faye Thomas,
it will be held every 3rd Sunday of the
month from 10am to 2pm. Charge is $2
for 4 hours of great fun. Bring your
lunch, fibre will be available to
purchase and spinning wheels to use if
you need them.
The Fibre Fun group is for folk who
are intered in having ‘fun with fibre’,
whether you have played around with
fibre, a beginner or just want time out.
Lots of fun in a group sharing ideas,
learning new crafts and just being
amongst fibre folk. Crafts include
spinning, weaving, and felting.
Want to know more? Contact Faye on
022 099 5467 (text only) or email

The more casual participants can
choose to stroll along the 5km or 10km
route taking in the scenery, while the
competitive athletes can tackle the
more challenging routes. Participants of
all ages enter Top of the Rock, from

major spot prize is a mountain bike,
donated by Bike Mangawhai. A raffle
will also be drawn for a Husqvarna
lawnmower, kindly donated by Steve
from Kaiwaka Motorcyles.

As I type this on Sunday afternoon, it is
persisting with rain outside. A good
day for tucking yourself away with a
good book, which is what I’ll be doing
when I’ve finished printing the Bugle!
Book Swaps
They’re a way off yet, but we have the
dates for the first book swaps for this
year. The Large Print and Audio swap
will be on Tuesday 19 April, and the
Dargaville swap will be on Thursday 9
June.
There’s time to come in and check out
the titles on those shelves, so don’t
forget to do that. There are some great
books there, and we won’t see them
again for a while once the swap has
been and gone.
Online Services
Don’t forget, too, that we have three
online services available
to us, courtesy of Kaipara
District Council - this is
your rates in action.
You can read or listen to books via
Overdrive and Borrow Box, and read
magazines via Zinio. Links are on the
libraries page at the KDC web site or
come in and talk to us.
Book Review
Recently I’ve read Wool by
Hugh Howey.
"What would you do if the
world outside was deadly,
and the air you breathed
could kill? And you lived in
a place where every birth
required a death, and the choices you
made could save lives - or destroy
them. This is Jules' story." (back cover)
This community of hundreds of people
was established generations ago, long
enough that the history was lost in a
rebellion and no-one alive knows how
they got here. Or have they always
been here, and the silo was created by
God? And is it really a toxic wasteland
outside, or is that just a myth to stop
people wanting to leave? So many
questions - and to start even thinking
about them, let alone asking out loud, is
to be sentenced to the always-fatal
"cleaning".
I've read other books by this author (the
teen fiction Molly Fyde Bern Saga
series, available at our online service
Overdrive) so was looking forward to
this one. I was not disappointed!
Wool is on the Rental Fiction shelves in
the library, and the two books that
follow it (Shift and Dust) will be
available in coming months. All three
titles are available at Overdrive.
See you in the library!
~Wendy
