He waka eke noa, Otamatea High
School’s whakataukī was put into
practice this week during Te Tai
Tokerau Festival #TTF16 which was
hosted by the school on 13th-14th
April. The staff, students and
community all jumped aboard the waka
and ensured that the kapahaka festival
highlighted the might of our local
community. The field was littered with
people,
Māori
games,
family
entertainment, food and information
stalls. After months of planning and
work preparing for the festival,
Otamatea High School is proud of the
result of the innovations that we
implemented. Tīakina te reo or
safeguarding language was promoted
through the engaging bi-lingual MCs
and the sign language interpreters;
tīakina te whenua or protecting the land
through the zero waste initiative;
tiakina te tangata through the
promotion of good health and
educational planning. The festival was
a fantastic way of unifying all facets of
our community and we would like to
thank our sponsors for supporting the
kaupapa and powering the waka.

Skin infections & sore throats
Skin Infections, such as scabies and
Impetigo (school sores) are common
problems in school children. Public
Health Nurses are able to assess
children and treat uncomplicated skin
infections and sore throats in school
age children.
Strep A throat infections can cause
Rheumatic Fever. A simple throat swab
is all that is required and if positive
then antibiotics can be given. This
preventable illness is prevalent in
Northland and this initiative has been
established to help prevent more cases.
This is a free service and free
medication will be supplied. Parental
consent will be obtained before we can
swab or treat your child and your
child’s GP will be informed of any
treatment provided.
If you have any questions or concerns
please contact your Public Health
Nurse – Dee Millen on 0800 223 358
(option 4) or 021 735 313.

competition 2016
Well done to all our dedicated pumpkin
growers this year! It was a challenging
season, with many unconfirmed and
outrageous claims made, mainly by
teachers, of pumpkins reaching prize-
winning weights before “exploding” or
rotting in the humid weather.
The 2016 champions were: “Big Boy”
heaviest pumpkin - Lincoln Morgan,
with a 93kg whopper, smashing all
previous records; “Arty Farty” dress-up
pumpkin - Penny Worsfold; “Hill Roll”
- Lincoln Morgan; Staff “Big Boy” -
Anna Jamieson; Staff “Arty Farty”
dress-up pumpkin - Anna Jamieson.
Many thanks to our generous sponsors:
Jaques Four Square, Kauri Park
Nurseries, Kaiwaka Cheese Shop, Buy
the Way Boutique, Café Bianca and
The Vet Centre. Thanks also to our
able pumpkin assistants, Sonya Gant
and John Ferguson.
Seeds
from
Lincoln’s
winning
pumpkin will be distributed in spring
for this coming summer’s budding
Giant Pumpkin growers - look out for
notice of this in the school newsletter.

ANZAC Day
On Monday the 25th of April it is
ANZAC Day. It starts at 10.00am and
we collect together at 9.45. This is the
second Monday of the Holidays. We
would like the school to be represented
at the Hakaru RSA on this day, and
Sharlene Tornquist and other teachers
will be there. We would like three
children to take the wreath up to the
cenotaph on behalf of the school. If
you bring your child to the RSA they
can march in line with the school.
Please find Sharlene Tornquist when
you get there as she will have the
yellow school t-
shirts for your child
to put on. We look
forward to seeing
you there.

Now that the metric system is in wide

Attendance was down a bit
at the March meeting
which was disappointing
as we had a “Special
afternoon tea” and a Floral
Presentation to our Ex
President
Heather.
Members are reminded
that they are required to attend at least
three meetings a year as a capitation
fee has to be paid by the RSA for each
member. New members are always
welcome.
Lena our New President chaired the
meeting and mentioned we have a very
busy month coming up with Anzac
Day on the 25th April.
We would like flowers and help with
the wreaths which are being made at
the RSA on Sunday 24th, anyone who
has flowers but cannot come to help
please get them to Ann at 5 Dey Street
or up to the RSA on or before the
Sunday.
As ANZAC DAY is such a
big event population wise
we are requesting help
from some of the younger
members of the public with
food as our members are
getting fewer, and “older”, and not able
to cook as they used to, - this would be
much appreciated thank you.
There is a request for more of our
members to make themselves available
to go on a roster to help with the meal
on the 2nd Friday of each month, could
you please phone Lena on 431 5034 if
you are able to help.
The next meeting is on Thursday 28th
April at 1:15 p.m. Looking forward to
seeing you all there.

Plans ahead for Kaiwaka
The Kaiwaka Can community group
has been working for many months on
the traffic problems we face as part of
State Highway One. Speed is a major
factor and too, safe pedestrian access to
different parts of the township.
NZ Transport Agency and Kaipara
District Council have been working
with us to find ways to solve these
problems and the proposed solutions
were presented to Kaiwaka Can last
Monday night.
The meeting was a lively one,
especially around the issue of speed
zones but out of the whole process have
come some very exciting possibilities
for our town. There are plans for
walkways, tree planting, beautification
of the verges, improved parking, safer
pedestrian access across the highway
and an increased network of footpaths.
The plans are extensive, covering far
more than our original petition
regarding speed.
Now it is time for the whole process to
be open to everyone in the Kaiwaka
community. Council is holding a public
round table session on Monday May
9th as part of the Annual Plan
consultation taking place across the
District. As part of this session, the
future plans proposed by Council and
NZTA will be on display, and Council
and NZTA staff working on this project
will be available to discuss them with
you. These plans include the overall
vision for Kaiwaka, maps and sections
for us to view and talk about. Your
feedback on this will be the foundation
for our action plan from now on.
This session is on Monday 9th May, 6-
8pm
at
the
Kaiwaka
Sports
Association. Look forward to seeing
you there.

Going through my
bookshelves
recently I noticed a special children’s
book that had belonged to my mother-
in-law - Constance Hargreaves, nee
Draper, who would have been 10 or 11
when she was given this book. The
stories are based on actual happenings.
John Lea’s Brave Boys and Girls in
Wartime (Blackie, 1918) is a
conventional
illustrated
children’s
book of the time with nine colour
images (three of them double page
spreads) by H.M. Brock (1875-1960)
and additional black and white line
drawings by Brock and Gordon
Browne (1858-1932) decorating its 71
pages. Both illustrators were prolific
and highly-regarded, especially for
their work in classic and children’s
texts – information from Geoff Fox of
Books For Keeps. John Lea (1868-
1952, aka John Lea Bricknell)

The second story of Madeleine follows
‘What the Boy Scouts Have Done’
Madeleine, the Coffee Girl
MADELEINE was a little French
peasant girl, whose father had gone
as a soldier to fight the enemy.
Madeleine was very brave, and
made up her mind to help in her
own way in the same great task.
And this is how she did it. Close by
her cottage stretched the long line
of trenches guarded by English
soldiers, and every morning as true
as the clock, through all the bitter
winter of 1915, she came to those
trenches with jugs of hot coffee.
Making her way among the tired
and sleeping men, she would call
out with a cheerful voice: “Come on!
Come on! Coffee! Coffee!” they
were almost the only English words
she could speak, but they were
music enough in the ears of the
dreaming soldiers, and they woke
with a happy smile
to greet the tiny
friend who had
risen earlier still to
make the cups of
warm rich coffee
that she brought to
them. And all this
took place so near
to
where
the
enemy lay, that, as
Madeleine walked
across the rough
ground
between
her home and the
trenches
where
her soldier friends
were lying, the roar
of the guns shook
the earth, and many people older
than herself dared not venture
there. But though the hot coffee
was
very
welcome,
it
was
Madeleine’s own brave ways that
did the most to cheer the hearts of
the men; for, while pouring out from
the large jug, she chattered in a
friendly way, though only a few
could understand what she said.
Sometimes she was helped by
another girl named Berthe Panoers,
and you may be sure these two
small heroines of the war will never
be forgotten.
Children in New Zealand were well
distanced from the theatre of war, but
they were active in support of the war
effort, as well as being encouraged to
be
‘cheerful’
and
‘helpful’.
Schoolchildren were involved in many
and varied fund raising efforts – they
grew
vegetables,
performed
at
concerts, copper penny trails and they
knitted and sewed socks and scarves
for soldiers at the front. Reference ~

Book swaps
By the time you read this, the Large
Print and Audio book swap will be
completed. Many thanks to those who
helped out on the day - it’s a huge job,
and I couldn’t do it alone these days, as
I used to when we first joined this
collection.
We have these new large print and
audio books on our shelves for about
six months, until some time in October
(the date for the next swap hasn’t been
set as I type this report). There is a
great range of titles on these shelves,
something for everyone. Do take a look
next time you’re in - you don’t have to
have sight problems to borrow these
books, they’re free to borrow for all of
our library members.
Next up will be the Dargaville book
swap in June. Take a good look at the
current collection while they’re still
here - we won’t see these books again
for several years. These ones don’t
need to come back before the swap,
we’ll send them on as they come in, so
borrow away!
Book requests
Did you know that you can, through
Kaiwaka Library, borrow (almost) any
book from any of the libraries in the
district, for free? Barring a few
restrictions (reference books, rentals,
and some special collections), if it’s in
the district we can get it for you. Come
in and fill in an orange request form,
show your library card, and we will
take care of the rest.
You can also search the library
catalogues from the comfort of your
own computer, if you have internet
access at your place. Go to the Kaipara
District
Council
web
site
(www.kaipara.govt.nz), click on the
link for the library, then look for the
link for “Your Account Login”. Next
click on the Advanced Search link, and
you’ll see the form for searching.
Despite having arrived at this point via
a link for logging in to a library
account, anyone can search the OPAC
(online public access catalogue).
Thanks and farewell
Farewell to Linda, who has left our
happy little team of volunteers. Your
efforts in the time you’ve been with us
are greatly appreciated.
Vacancy
We have a vacancy in our team, for
someone who can run the library on the
2nd Saturday of the month, 10am to
2pm. If you’re interested, see the
advertisement on page 2 of this issue of
the Bugle.
Community information
Did you know that we hold copies of
various government and local body
publications for your benefit? Need to
check out something in the council
minutes? Read up on what Lotteries
have been up to? Come in and take a
look at our display of materials -
they’re in the entranceway facing SH1.
You’ll need to come into the
library to get to them - it’s
often too cold and/or windy to have
those outside doors open. If we don’t
have what you’re looking for, leave a
message for me with the library
volunteer on duty or send me an email
(kaiwaka.library@gmail.com) and let
me know what you’re looking for.
New to the district?
Kaiwaka Library is a community
library, entirely run by volunteers with
support from Kaipara District Council
and Dargaville Public Library.
It is free to join the library - bring
along:
(1)a current form of personal
identification that has your name and
signature on it (eg driver’s licence,
Community Services card, student or
work identification, passport), and
(2)a proof of address no more than
three months old (a utility bill
(power, telephone, etc, (a letter from
a recognised government authority
(eg WINZ) or a bank printout that has
your street address on it,
and complete a membership application
form. You can borrow two books that
day, and then once you’ve got your
library card (usually the following
week) you can borrow up to 10 items at
a time; most items are issued to you for
31 days (magazines and DVDs/Blu
Rays are issued for 7 days).
Book review
Recently I’ve read Reach, by Hugh
Brown. " Will Clar k thinks he's a
socially inept bookworm who just
happens to enjoy cross-country running
and taekwondo. But then his mother
returns after a five-year absence
overseas, and he has his first full-
contact taekwondo fight, and the
gorgeous comic-reading Conway Jones
asks if she can be his maths tutor...
Will must reassess himself, and his
past, as he reaches towards a new
future and lets his dreams take
flight." (book cover)
My take: Shy boy who has been living
with his grandparents since his parents
separated comes to realise his
perception of his father is a bit off the
mark when he reconnects with his
estranged mother. And wonders why a
boy at school stopped bullying him as
suddenly as he'd started, until a girl
who is becoming more than a friend
fills him in on some of her own history.
I recommend this book, of course! It
was an enjoyable
read
with
believable
characters.
And
Will's grandparents
are fabulous; we
should all be so
lucky.
See you in the
library!
~Wendy
