WEATHER
What a beautiful Autumn we are
having. The leaves are starting to fall
off the trees and the colours are
beautiful on others. The rain we have
had has left a few patches around now.
Have you noticed how little water there
is on the Brynderwyn waterfall? The
watertables are still low.
The Met office admitted they got the
weather a bit wrong over summer.
Well, the weather will also change its
mind as we do. For the middle of
autumn things are looking fine and the
grass is still growing with this warm
weather. It did turn a bit chilly at times
but hey, this is autumn.
We had that horrible wind again near
the middle of the month with promises
of heavy rain.
We did not see much rain, in fact we
had 23mm one day, and on another we
had 12mm. Out at Mangawhai Heads
they had over 45mm in a short while.
April this year we had 49mm rain and
April 2015 we had 81mm. Our driest
Aprils since 1987 were 2005, 2010, and
2012 each with 28mm. Our wettest
April was 1988 with 222mm. The first
four months this year we had 437mm
and last year we’d had 236mm.
“They say London is the foggiest place
in the world, but I have been to a place
where the fog was much thicker.”
Where was that? “Don’t know it was
too foggy”. Not my joke though.
Well take care out there and keep
warm. There is till time to get firewood
in as there does not seem to be too
much rain on the horizon. ~Bev

In the second week of the school
holidays 15 scouts, 5 adults and a
couple of friends went camping at
Mangawhai for a few days following
the ANZAC Day service
(pictured
bottom).
It was a bit of an eye-opener for some,
who had never before had to live in a
tent with no power, no running water,
and a long-drop toilet. They were even
taught how to shower with one cup of
water!
During the camp there was lots of
tramping, including walking the
Tanekaha track, where they visited the
trig station
(pictured below right)
, and
Puriri track, where they visited a huge
puriri tree
(below left)
which is bigger
than the largest formally recorded in
Burstall and Sale’s Great Trees of New

Many thanks to all who were involved
in making it a great camp. A valuable

The Hakaru ANZAC service was very well attended. See the photos below.
In the evening, the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall committee showed the movie ‘The
Water Diviner’, which told the story of an Australian father (played by Russell Crowe)
who went searching for his lost sons on the Gallipoli peninsular in the aftermath of
World War One.
Neville Andrew of the Hakaru and Districts RSA led the evening with the Last Post, Ode
Reveille, and a short address “As this movie is set in 1919, I thought to myself, what do I
talk about? The war is over! This is about what happened to our troops when they
arrived back in a peaceful New Zealand.
“The information I am bout to reveal to you is taken from the book New Zealand and the
First World War 1914-1919. Fighting in WW1 ended November 1918 with 56,684 troops
serving overseas. The end of December saw the start of repatriation to England, then to
New Zealand. By January 1919, batches of 700 to 1000 troops were leaving each week.
The last troops left England in July 1920.
“The Government set up a repatriation department in December 1918 to support the
influx of unemployed men. Training was organised to prepare men for new professions,
or to integrate back into interrupted careers. Some learned industrial trades. They were
also eligible for loans to help re-establish themselves in business.
“Soldier’s widows were also eligible for vocational training. Some of the men went onto
farms - settling returned soldiers on the land was important to the government and
1.6 million hectares were made available for soldier settlement.
“Caring for wounded and incapacitated ex-servicemen presented different challenges -
war pensions were paid on a sliding scale depending on the injuries - a system still in use
today. Specialist hospitals were set up for treatment of ailments that the men brought
back from the front.
“Patriotic Societies set up convalescent homes. In 1919 the Government set up specialist
Military hospitals in Rotorua, Waipukurau, Trentham, Hanmer Springs and Cashmere.
The incurable were accommodated in Veterans homes in the four main centres.
“Many ex-soldiers returned to normal life without difficulty but others struggled to settle
after the rigours and excitement of the war. Some drank heavily, others to hold down a
job. And, I suspect to settle into family life. A 1930s Commission of Inquiry estimated
500 ex-servicemen’s wartime experiences had condemned them to poverty, permanent
ill health or both. They found that many who joined up at a very young age had no
experience other than soldering and were temporarily unable to settle to employment.
Tonight we pay tribute to those who survived the war, but came home and endured a less
than normal life through no fault of their own.”

Zac Wing. The club has had a
successful season with around 20
young players enjoying age/skill based
lessons. There has been a steady
increase in the number of adults
participating in our Monday evening
social tennis. Tennis is expected to
begin again early in Term 4.
Basketball
We have 6 teams entered in our
Basketball Module which starts Sunday
15
th

OTAMATEA REPERTORY THEATRE
KAIWAKA SCHOOL
THIS MONTH IN NZ HISTORY
(nzhistory.net.nz)
14 May 1870 - First game of rugby played in NZ. Around 200 people were on
hand at Nelson’s Botanic Reserve to watch a new version of rugby football
brought to New Zealand by Charles Monro. Nelson College played the Nelson
Football Club, with 18 players on each side. The ‘town’ team, sporting ‘street
clothes’, won the match 2-0.
14 May 1940 - NZ minesweeper sunk off Bream Head.
HMS Puriri was a converted 927-ton Anchor Company
coaster that was commissioned into the 25th
Minesweeping Flotilla on 19 April 1941. It was
operating with another minesweeper, HMS Gale, off
Bream Head in the northern approaches to the Hauraki
Gulf when it struck a German contact mine, part of a 228-mine barrage laid on
13–14 June 1940 by the raider Orion. Rocked by a violent explosion,
the Puriri sank so quickly that no lifeboats could be launched. The
ship’s commanding officer, two stewards, a stoker and an able seaman – all of
them former merchant seamen serving as naval reservists or under temporary
(T 124) naval articles – were drowned, and five others were injured. The 26
survivors were rescued from the water by the Gale.
20 May 1773 - NZ’s first sheep released. During his second voyage to New
Zealand in 1773, James Cook released a ewe and a ram from the Cape of Good
Hope (South Africa) in Queen Charlotte Sound. They survived for only a few
days, an inauspicious start to this country’s long association with sheep.

A DAY at BIANCA’S
Your editor took a sneak peek at
Wednesday's full-day photo shoot at

Council seeks feedback
on Annual Plan
Kaipara District Council is getting out
and about in May to connect with the
community about the Annual Plan and
other projects.
Commissioner Chair John Robertson
says there are no significant changes
from the Long Term Plan.
“We want community feedback on the
plan and we’re holding round table
sessions around the district so people
can give us their views. Our Annual
Plan consultation document provides
detail. One issue of interest is the
reduction of debt by $10.1 million.”
The Council has quite a few interesting
projects happening now which actively
involve members of the community
and feedback on progress is sought.
“One project which is of great interest
in Dargaville is the library redesign.
The concept plans for this will be on
display for comment. In Mangawhai,
the early work on the Town Plan is also
progressing, as are the ‘place making’
concepts for Kaiwaka and Dargaville.
“These projects help shape our
communities. Therefore community
involvement and views are essential,”
Mr Robertson says.
The round table sessions will provide
opportunities to discuss roading, water
and wastewater as well, and people will
also be able to lodge service requests.
“Connecting with the community on an
informal basis such as this is about
making it easy for people to provide
positive insights into what Kaipara
residents are looking for, for their
communities and from the Council.”
The “Let’s Connect” round
table sessions are as follows:
Maungaturoto Centennial Hall, View
Street – 2 May at 6pm
Northern Wairoa War Memorial Hall
(Dargaville Town Hall), Hokianga
Road – 3 May at 6pm
