Sat: 8am to 7pm (Lotto)
Sun & Public Holidays: 9am to 5pm
Many people will have already
observed the Rolls of Honour that have
been etched onto the doors of the
Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall.
On Friday 5 August at 5pm they were
officially ‘unveiled’ in a short service
lead by Derek Christensen, followed by
Ben Hita, both local ministers.
The ode was recited by Graeme
Hitchcock, president of the Hakaru &
Districts RSA, prior to the cutting of
the red ribbon by the hall president Ad
Clarijs.
Ad has been the driving force behind
the project, with financial support from
the Kaiwaka Sports Association.
A crowd of nearly 40 turned out, in
pretty foul weather, showing there is
still great appreciation for those who
served in two world wars.
It was much warmer inside the hall,
where Bill Leslie read a poem from his
father, who served in World War I,
followed by some local history and
stories of a few names from the
boards that has been well-
researched by Jennie Reynolds and
Lindsey Hargreaves.
A cup of tea and an ANZAC biscuit
was then enjoyed by all.
If people have information about
the people named on the boards,
please contact us - we would love
to know more and create a more
permanent record about them.

Welcome from a soggy July.
July has not been as soggy as some
Julys we have had. It is combined from
a month or so back with all the rain.
Everybody was heartily sick of the
wind. It was nice to have the frosts we
had. They were very heavy and crisp.
Those very foggy days hung around
also.
Well Doug, it is no wonder your tractor
nearly got stuck helping your daughter
with trees that had blown over. The
ground is really soggy. Never mind,
you will all be growling soon when the
dry kicks in.
It’s a good time to put in those extra
water tanks as they will fill in no time.
For July 2016 we had 197mm rain and
July 2015 we had 82mm.
For the first 7 months of 2016 we had
873mm rain and the first seven months
of 2015 we had 568mm.
Our driest July since 1987 was 1993
with 33mm and the wettest was 1998
with 602mm.
Our driest first 7 months of any year
since 1987 was 1987, in fact ,with
480mm and the wettest was 2011 with
1201mm.
We had rain on 17 days this year and in
2015 in July we had rain on 14 days.
Did you know a toe is a device for
finding furniture in the dark?
Do you know the quickest way to
double your money is fold it and put it
back in your pocket?
Well take care during August and on
the wet roads and dry as well.
Till next month ~Bev

High School
On the Thursday the 11th of August
Otamatea High School is having an
open day. All year 6 students are
invited even if they don’t plan on
attending Otamatea. It is good for
students to have a look around and get
orientated. Parents are also invited and
can catch the bus leaving Kaiwaka at
9:15 and returning to school by 2:00.
Bus Changes
Please ensure that Linda in the office is
informed of any bus changes by 1:30
pm. A note sent to school with your
child is a good way of letting the
school know of changes. Please contact
the school if you have a change of
phone number or address. This helps
the school to check bus arrangements
when it is unclear.
Calf Club
Calf Club is coming up in Term 4. So
far we have had one parent contact the
school about running the school Calf
Club Day. It is a lot of work for one
person and will be much easier if the
load is spread. Please contact the
school if you could help in some way.
The school Calf Club Day will be
Thursday the 20th of October. This is
the week before Labour Day.
Ladies Lunch
Remember the Ladies Lunch is coming
up. This is for Mums / Grandmas /
Caregivers and children. You need to
RSVP to the school by August the 8th
so the correct amount of food can be
made or ordered. The actual day is
Sunday the 14th of August from 11:30
to 1:00pm at the Kaiwaka Sports
Association. Cost: Adults = $10, Child
= $5.
Appreciation Jar
The Appreciation Jar is full again of
share and trump hands. This means we
are going to have another Appreciation
Day on Thursday the 28th of July.
Children can bring a toy or game to
play with.
Science Roadshow
A heads’-up for the Science Roadshow
which will be at Otamatea High School
on Wednesday the 17th of August.
Rooms 4/5/6 will be busing over to the
high school for the workshop. The cost
will be $2 per child. Please return the
permission slip ASAP.
Mud
The school grounds are very muddy at
the moment so please send a change of
clothes along in your child's’ bag ready
for accidents if they occur.
Parent Calendar app
This year Kaiwaka School has been
lucky enough to have local business
pay for the Parent Calendar App. The
school newsletter is uploaded to this
app each week and important dates
loaded onto the calendar. When you
download this app onto your phone
please ensure you choose ‘get push
notifications’. The app also needs to be
refreshed regularly.
https://www.facebook.com/
parentteachercalendarapp/
This month you could win a $500
grocery voucher for liking the facebook
page and downloading the app. We
need everyone to be using the app to
get the most from it, so please have a
go.

Rescue Helicopter Appeal
I've counted the donations that we've
received for the Rescue Helicopter's
Pilot Activated Lighting System - a
total of over $4,700! And donations are
still coming in.
I'm so impressed with the generosity of
our little town. Many people donated
anonymously - so please take this as
my personal thank-you for your
support.
Your generosity means that we will be
able to install the Pilot Activated
Lighting system at the Sports Complex,
and the extra money will go towards
the
building
of
a
helipad.
Our proposed site for the helipad is
between the #2 rugby field and the
bush. We are meeting with the
Operations Manager of the Northland
Emergency Services Trust next week
and he will give us more information
about how to build the helipad.
Many thanks to everyone for your
support of this project.

Our IMB team, the Hawks Under 16s,

st
August at our Sports
Complex at noon, this will be a shared

club.
Rugby – Reps
We are proud to be hosting two
Northland IMB matches at our grounds
next month. Northland (South Zone)
will be taking on North Harbour, the
Under 14s kick off at noon and the
Under 16s will kick off at 1.30pm.
We are also hosting the JMB reps, on
Sunday 28

A Night at the Carnival
The carnival atmosphere is unique,
the aroma of popcorn and cotton
candy in the air and a look of joy on
people's faces.
I couldn't have achieved this vision
without the help and support of my
team consisting of students, parents
and teachers. There are so many
aspects involved in putting a night
like this together and I would say
this night was a success that those
involved should feel proud of. A
special thanks goes to my parents for
transporting me all over and
purchasing items when needed. Also
a big thank you to Richard Reed,
Pete Hames, Grant van Dalsum,
John Linton and Julie Lewis who
offered their time and their help. I
feel like this was a great last school
ball for me. As a Year 13 as I have
learned so much and was able to
share this project with my friends
and fellow students.
Congratulations to King and Queen
of the evening - Savea Saua and Erin
Mooney, Prince and Princess Tane
Aitken and Rowena Allardyce and
Beau and Belle Anthony Kim and
Parekaahu Paikea. Best Dressed
went to Shaniqua, and cutest
couple went to Shawna Hawken and
Brody Shadbolt. A huge thank you to
the band Kurfew for the great
entertainment throughout the night and
also to Jason Stitt our amazing
photographer. I hope the following
school balls are also a great success as
this one was. ~ Kelly Mace

What a month July was!
So much happened in July, it was
certainly a whirlwind of a month. The
drop-in space has been busy this
month. Lots of new people coming in
to visit.
We also have a new PC (thanks to
Lars) which is running faster than the
old one. It has all the software you
might need. We ask for a koha of a
gold coin to use the pc/internet which
helps us pay our bills.
Our printer has been getting a workout
lately. It’s quite expensive to run one at
home, so we are lucky to have such a
great one available for everyone to use.
The printer scans, prints, copies and
can do it in colour as well as black and
white. What’s great is it also does
double-sided which helps save on
paper. Beth Stone, our volunteer and
local Remax Real Estate Agent,
provides the printer for us to use.
Aren’t we lucky.
What do you think Kaiwaka is
missing that we could provide?
The Kaiwaka Cares team has lots of
ideas on what we might be able to help
you with in the future. However what
we think Kaiwaka needs and what you
think could be very different. So we
need your help. What would you like as
a service either in the drop-in space,
Kate’s Place or in Kaiwaka in general?
No idea too big, too small, or too silly.
Either pop in and let us know or email
caring4kaiwaka@gmail.com.
Charity Auction
The planning is underway for the
auction. We have had to push the
original date back a couple of weeks. It
will now be on 17 September in the
afternoon, still at the Hakaru Hall. If
you have something you would like to
offer up to be auctioned or you are able
to help out in some way give Janine
(#027 663 6802) or Beth (#027 493
7801) a call. Alternatively, speak to
Bruce at Scouts or
Rachel at the Cadets.
More information on the
auction will be coming
up. So put the date in
your dairy and watch this space.
Community Garden
Thanks to Rhona for taking charge of
the garden while Helen heals up. A
new volunteer, Kay, will be starting in
the garden to help get things ship shape
so we can grow lots of yummies for
summer.
How you can help us …
Over the past couple of weeks we have
had to stay closed on a couple of days
as our team has been too sick to come
in. As we are such a small team we
don’t have enough people to cover
when the unthinkable happens and two
or more of us are sick at the same time.
Do you have a few hours to spare, or
could you be on call if we need
emergency cover? If so pop in and talk
to us or Iris at Kate’s Place or email
caring4Kaiwaka@gmail.com.
Internet Access
Something that is so accessible
elsewhere is something we struggle
with in Kaiwaka. Yes, at times we have
the internet access equal to a third
world country. Kaiwaka Cares is
currently working with a provider
using the Rural Band Initiative in
conjunction with Council to see what
we can come up a solution. We are
hoping to provide a free access WiFi
hub based out of Kate’s Place that will
be accessible from surrounding areas.
Once we have more details we will let
you know. So help is coming!
If there is anything else the Kaiwaka
Cares can do for you or someone you
know in the community please do not
hesitate to pop in and talk to us or
email caring4kaiwaka@gmail.com
