SORT
Summer Trading Hours:
Monday to Friday 8:00am - 6:30pm
Saturday 8:00am - 7:00pm
Sunday & Public Holidays 9:00am - 5:00pm
Kaiwaka’s latest octogenarian is this
month’s recipient of the Flower Girl’s
Good Sort bouquet. Reg Jaques has
been part of the Kaiwaka community
all his life - a foundation member of the
fire brigade, still involved in St.Johns, a
member of Jaques Band since he was
12; and still plays the organ regularly
for many functions eg. RSA. A great
volunteer painter for both Kaiwaka
Sports Assn., and the St.John buildings.
He has mended a large number of
firearms for locals - a true ‘jack of all
trades’.

TOUCH
TOURNAMENT IS
BACK!!!
14th January 2017 marks the 3rd
consecutive
Whanaunga
Touch
Tournament held at Kaiwaka Sports
Complex. The tournament has been
held annually to support Otamatea
Marae with fundraising efforts for their
complex development. It’s also a time
for Te Uri o Hau, Ngati Whatua
whanau to come home. Tournament
organiser Taira O’Hara Lambert said
that this year is going to be more
festive with more food stalls and
bouncy castles.
Local community groups are welcome
to use this as an opportunity to
fundraise. Kaiwaka Sports Association
have kindly assisted as from the
beginning with funding, equipment and
administration. We have awesome local
sponsors that help us year after year,
without them it wouldn’t be such a
success.
16 teams will vie for the Kerry
Strongman Trophy and cash prize of
$500. “Our tournament is about
whanau coming together, to get active,
and have a fun day out.”
We give our whanau first option to put
in a team, then it’s open to the rest of
the Kaipara. We have players as young
as 8years to 50years playing in the
same team. It’s awesome! We also
have a kaumatua and VIP area for our
sponsors.

Swimming Pool
The school pool will soon be open to
the community for the Christmas
holidays. So far Sam and Len have
volunteered to be dosers this year , for
which we are very thankful. If you are
a trained doser and would like to help
please contact Sharlene Tornquist. She
needs a group of dosers to be able to
keep the pool open.
We are now also looking for volunteers
to be testers over the holidays. This
would mean being available to test the
pool at 12 and 3pm during the day.
Testers get a pool key for half price. If
you would like to be a tester please
contact Sharlene Tornquist at school or
at home: 09 4312439. If you let her
know when you will be away she will
roster you on around this. The more
people who volunteer the less time you
will be on the roster.

awaited
township
improvement plan for Kaiwaka has
now been released. The plan is a result
of lengthy negotiations between
Kaipara District Council, NZ Transport
Authority
and
Kaiwaka
Can
representing the community. Residents
in Kaiwaka and surrounds made
considerable contributions along the
way especially about the problems of
speeding traffic. Te Uri o Hau have
also been included in consultations and
have made valuable suggestions
relating to ways we preserve local
history and also ways in which we
incorporate Te Aranga Maori design
principles in implementing the plan.
It all began with questions about traffic
and speed in Kaiwaka and especially
the impact of State Highway One on
our community. But it expanded to take
in a range of issues raised by residents
with the aim of producing a
comprehensive plan that would make
our town more attractive and safer for
all who live here and those who pass
through.
So what is going to happen
immediately?
The plan is divided into short term (1-5
years) and long term (5 years plus)
projects. Projects for the first financial
year (2016-17) include “Welcome to
Kaiwaka” signage, a start made on a
riverside walkway loop linking the two
rivers and bridges, a new underpass
connection under Mountain Creek
bridge to McClean Park, an improved
footpath associated with the Kaiwaka
River underpass and signage for the
footpath to the school. Two pedestrian
refuges are planned in the next year,
one near the Italian Bakery, the other
near Hastie Lane, with accompanying
footpath treatment and roadside
planting. Planting is also part of the
plan with trees along the highway and
planted verges near the main shops.
The “Your Speed is…” sign of course
has already been installed and we are
becoming more aware of our speeds
through town. The art installation
round the water utility near Eutopia is
well advanced, thanks to the hard work
of Marijke, especially in getting
volunteers involved.
There is a lot more detail in the plan
and a full release on the Plan will be
made once it is ratified by the full
Council (meets December 13th) and
NZTA. They will let us know about the
public release of the plan. But we are
delighted to have got this far and are
grateful especially for the hard work of
Council (Annie and Sue) and the
NZTA team led by Sarah Ho.
But wait, there is more…
The ‘more’ is a problem that has
become clear since the meeting with
Kaiwaka Can last Monday. NZTA has
proposed a change to the speed zones
through Kaiwaka to make it all 60kph.
When we first heard this, we were
disturbed at the suggestion we solve
our speed problems by raising the
speeds! So we wrote, emailed,
petitioned and prepared a case
opposing this move by NZTA.
Mark Newsome, the editor of the
proposal, was at our meeting Monday
night, brave man! He gave us a full run
down on the proposal, the reasons and
the evidence for the change. It also
became clear we had made a strong
case that NZTA cannot ignore.
However if the change is defeated, we
have a real dilemma, one we didn’t
fully appreciate beforehand.
Currently our speed zones are as
follows:
70k from above Shamrock down to the
corner above the Bakery, then a
temporary 50 zone from the end of the
70 down to just south of Oneriri Road
and then a permanent 50 zone from
Oneriri Road to Mountain Creek bridge
at the northern end.
The catch lies in the temporary 50
zone. It was put in several years ago to
allow work on a slip and the
‘temporary’ sign was never removed.
However all such temporary signs that
are no longer there for their original
purpose are to be removed. That
includes ours and the gazetted speed
for that zone is 70. So if the 60
proposal is defeated and we revert to
the status quo, we will end up with
most of Kaiwaka at 70, losing another
160 metres of our current 50 zone.
Just the sort of problem we didn’t need
after all the hard work people put into
opposing the 60 proposal! We need to
work through this and to this end,
Kaiwaka Can is meeting as the Bugle is
being assembled and we will negotiate
with Council and NZTA to seek the
best possible outcome. It is the old
story of ‘the devil being in the detail’.
There is far more in the plan than we
can talk about here. Council will be
releasing more information shortly and
when that happens, we hope you will
work through it and especially note all
the good things it contains.
We believe it will in the end mean a
safer, more attractive and better
coordinated Kaiwaka.

Our Badminton club will continue to

start again on 10th January.
Whanaunga Touch Tournament
The
annual
Whanaunga
Touch
Tournament will be held at our grounds
on Saturday 14th January. Registration
forms are available at Jaques Four
Square
or
whanaungatouch@gmail.com.
KSA Helipad
Donations for our helipad have now
reached over $6,500! Many thanks
Kaiwaka for your generosity. This is
going to be enough to cover the cost of
the helipad, the floodlighting pole &
the Pilot Activated Lighting system.
We have still got a few finishing
touches to do, then it will be
completed. Once it's finished, I will
organise an opening ceremony, watch
this space for details.
Wheelchair Access
I was recently approached by a local
lady in a wheelchair about access to
our Fitness Centre, so with thanks to
Phil Keen who concreted a ramp to the
Fitness Centre's back door, and to
Mark Ottaway who adjusted the door,
we now have wheelchair access to the
Fitness Centre. So this means that our
entire Sports Complex is now
accessible by wheelchair users.
Kaiwaka Touch Module
Would you like to play in my Summer
Touch Module? The Touch module
will be held at the Sports Complex for
eight weeks on Wednesday evenings
starting on Wednesday 18th January.
Teams are 6 a-side with at least three
females on the field, double points for
female try-scorers.
You can have up
to 14 players in
your team, team fee is $100.
This is a casual, friendly
competition for mixed teams of men,
women and teenagers. Touch is easy to
learn and just about anyone can play.
Why not start getting a team together!
Top of the Rock
Our 7th annual multi-sport event Top
of the Rock will be held on Sunday
12th February. Entry forms will be on
our website www.kaiwakasports.co.nz
shortly.
The event caters for walkers, runners
and mountain bikers, both recreational
and competitive as there are a range of
options:
5km or 11km walk or run
10km run + 15km mountain bike ride
(this can be done in pairs or as an
individual)
10km or 30km mountain bike route
fun bike course for under 10 year olds
Routes travel through some of
Kaiwaka's most
scenic
countryside –
bush, lakes and
farmland. And
you get the
opportunity to
climb
iconic
Baldrock Mountain, which is easier
than the daunting view from the road
suggests, as there is a well formed
track which spirals around the
mountain.
TV3's Brendon 'Money Man' Johnson
will host the prizegiving with prizes for
placegetters plus lots of great spot
prizes, including a mountain bike
sponsored by Bike Mangawhai.
Advance notice: there will be no
entries taken on the day, the last day to
enter will be Friday 10th February. To

LIBRARY
Christmas Holidays
The library will be closed
from
Saturday
24
December until Tuesday 3 January
2017. We open at 10am on Wednesday
4 January and continue our normal
hours.
Library members can borrow up to ten
items at a time, so come in and stock
up before the holidays.
Books and other items will be issued
for their usual loan periods in the days
leading up to the break, even if that
means they’re due back when we’re
closed. There is an after-hours returns
slot by the main doors on Kaiwaka-
Mangawhai Road, where you can
return items when we’re not there. I’ll
be chasing up overdue items pretty
quickly after we re-open!
Dargaville Book Swap
The swap is about a week away when
this paper is published. There’s no need
to get those books back to us
beforehand, we will send those back as
they come to us, but now is the last
chance to have a good look through
these items before they disappear back
to Dargaville.
Online services
Have you tried any of our free online
services yet? There are two book
services - both e-books and audio
books - and a magazine service, plus
the Encyclopedia Britannica. You need
to set a PIN on your account before you
can access them, so ask to do that next
time you’re in the library if you haven’t
already. Go to www.kaipara.govt.nz/
Service++Info/Libraries.html to get
into these services.
Book Reviews
I haven’t been writing many reviews
lately, but I’ve been reading a lot!
Authors include Michael Grant, Patrick
O’Brian, Lee Child, Lilian Jackson
Braun, Joy Cowley, JD Robb, Hugh
Howey, Ann Cleeves, Ian Mune, Clive
Cussler, Peter F Hamilton, Robert
Harris…
Survey
Do you have a suggestion on how we
could improve your library experience,
or have an author you’d love for us to
get all their titles? Come in and
complete a survey form and pop it into
the box on the table.
Season’s Greetings
Whatever you’re doing over the
holiday period, the team of volunteers
at Kaiwaka Library wish you well, and
hope you enjoy the break.

about. We do not want to put our
volunteers at risk.
