KAIWAKA WINNERS OF NORTHLAND DAIRY AWARDS
Congratulations to Kaiwaka locals, Niall and Delwyn McKenzie, for winning the Northland Share Farmers of the Year
award recently, and Dairy Trainee of the Year Blake Anderson. They’re pictured here with Dairy Manager of the Year

Niall and Delwyn milk 230 cows on Settlement Road – just along the road
from Delwyn’s parents and grandparents. They both say how important
family support is when entering such a competition as the Dairy Industry
Awards, and have appreciated the advice and encouragement they have
given. They are 50% sharemilkers for Rodger and Jan Comrie, on
Comrie’s 100ha farm (who Niall and Delwyn say have been awesome to
work with).
The competition is very involved covering all aspects of their dairy
management, so not only does all the paperwork need to be in order but
the physical farming activities need to be ‘ship-shape’ too. Then there are
the intensive interviews. These interviews, covering management of
finances, livestock, pasture, environment, sustainability, making the most
of the property, dairy hygiene, health and safety, etc., are taken ‘on-farm’.
To qualify for entry three Northland judges lead the two hour interview.
Once making the final, three more judges from outside of Northland took
Delwyn and Niall through their paces!
They have always been keen to improve their dairy practise. First entering
the Dairy Industry awards in 2013 when they won the Northland Farm
Manager of the Year, along with three merit awards, and were third in the

ABOUT TOWN
Oops - Our Good Sort last issue is Beryl
Adamson. My apologies, Beryl. Lindsey.
Oneriri, take a bow! Last week's rubbish
pick up was blue and yellow bags only, not
a green or black bag in sight. Good to see.
Have you had enough rain? That was a
huge amount the other week, 100mm in 24
hours at one stage at our place in Kaiwaka,
a lot more was recorded down Oneriri.
Things are nicely damp now, and loving
that cool southerly.
Note the kids movie this month has been
changed, re-showing last month’s that had
had technical difficulties.

Bill Worsfold
Bev, Heath, Jackson, Blake, Eden and families thank
everyone who gave support and love over the period
of Bill’s illness, death and funeral.
Bill’s great grandparents, Joseph and Selina Bowmar,
arrived and settled in Kaiwaka in 1864 and now
Bill’s seven grandchildren are the 6th generation
descendants attending Kaiwaka
School.
For Bill there was never anywhere
as wonderful as his farm here in
Kaiwaka. Weeks could pass and I
would realise Bill hadn’t stepped
foot off the property.
We all feel so grateful to have had
such an incredibly loving, kind
and generous husband, father, and
grandfather. ~ Bev

KAIWAKA COMMUNITY CINEMA
We have just had our three year
anniversary, and we have celebrated
that with some polo shirts for the whole
team.
The Kaiwaka Movie Group, all
volunteers, are bringing movies to the
area two Friday nights each month plus
a kids’ matinee on the last Sunday each
month.
We try to create a nice warm (or cool,
depending on the season) atmosphere/
ambience to make it as enjoyable as
possible. It is about bringing the
community together, utilising our
community asset, the Kaiwaka War
Memorial Hall.
In this way we generate some much-
needed income to pay for maintenance
at the hall, including insurance, rates
and power bills. Lately, some groups
have
been
using
the
movies
successfully as a fundraiser.
Anzac Day Specials
We also have an Anzac Day movie,
with proceeds going to the Hakaru
RSA. The movie for this Anzac Day
will be Hacksaw Ridge.
Great Movie Experience
The movie experience is
great - we have a 7-metre
x 3-metre movie screen,
an incredible professional
sound
system
5.1
surround system with a
big
subwoofer,
comfortable chairs, and at
each screening we have
an intermission - a 15
minute break, when you
can get your tea, coffee,
icecream
and
other
goodies from our tuck
shop.
Just recently the idea of
huge cushions/pillows for
the kids’ matinee has been
realised, with a big help
from members of the
community who designed and made
them. Kids love them.
Sunday matinees start at 2:00pm and
tickets cost only $5.00. Friday night
tickets are $10.00 for adults and $5.00
for under 16s.
We have to purchase a licence from the
distributor for every movie we screen,
and for every screening, which is why
we hardly ever screen the same movie
twice. There is a large basic cost for
each movie.
Special Movie Nights
We have a music movie night and
supper for $20.00 twice a year, when
we screen a live concert on the big
screen. Combined with our big sound,
it’s “like being at the concert!!”
On 7 April we will screen Cliff Richard
and the Shadows: Final Reunion. All
the hits live in the London Arena.
Entry is by tickets only. To order

KAIWAKA TOUCH
MODULE
Over seventy people participated in the
Kaiwaka Sports Association's Touch
Module, held on Wednesday evenings
over February and March.
One highlight of this year’s Touch
Module was the number of children
who played. Lots of primary aged
children – with the youngest being just
five years old!
The finals saw Touch & Go taking on
The Spartans. The Spartans came out
on top and took home the winners
purse of $300 and Touch & Go took
away the second place prize of $200.
The third place prize of $100 went to
Wu Tag Clan.
After the finals, players moved into the
pavilion
for
prizegiving,
congratulations to the prize winners:
Youngest player – Anthony Pairama
Oldest player – Neville Nathan
The prize for the Best Presented Team
went to Young Guns.
Team managers nominated one person
from their team to receive a special
prize: Makeshift: Branden - for being a
very dedicated player and for showing
massive improvement each week. Wu
Tag Clan: Nena – for enjoying the
season; Touch & Go: Jack - for playing
in all the Modules that the KSA offers
eg: Touch, Basketball and Fast Five. Te
Kotahitanga: Korurangi - for never
having played Touch before but being
keen and giving it his all. The
Spartans: Taira - for all the organising
she does for the touch season: the
Kaiwaka
Touch
Module,
two
tournaments and cooking meals after
trainings. Young Guns: Jamie - for
huge efforts in playing and coaching
the younger members of the team. And
for traveling in to Kaiwaka from
Taipuha
each
week.
Many thanks to the referees: Gerrin,
Leonard and JK.
Final placings:
6th: Te Kotahitanga; 5th: Young Guns;
4th: Makeshift; 3rd: Wu Tag Clan; 2nd:
Touch & Go; 1st: The Spartans.
Photos and videos from the Module are
on the Kaiwaka Touch Facebook page.
Thank
you
to
everyone
who
participated and we hope to see you
back next year!
GAME BIRD
LICENCES
The game bird hunting licences for the
2017 season went on sale last week. The
licences are available at sports stores or
on-line through the Fish & Game
website www.fishandgame.org.nz
Fish & Game chief executive Bryce
Johnson points out that revenue raised
through licence sales helps protect the
environment. “Fish & Game is a
statutory organisation and is required by
Parliament to not only look after game
birds, but also manage, maintain and
enhance their habitats. “We take that
role seriously and work hard to make
sure not only game but native birds too
have a healthy environment in which to
survive,” Mr Johnson says.
All hunting licences are required to have
a game bird habitat stamp on them and
the money raised from the sale of these
stamps is used to enhance wetlands and
other environments where birds live. The
stamps are also available for members of
the general public to buy and Bryce
Johnson is urging people to buy a stamp
and do their bit to help the environment.
“Vital habitat like wetlands is under
threat and that puts pressure on wildlife
living there, including native birds and
fish. The habitat stamps raise valuable
funds to protect these areas .
The game bird season opens nationwide
on Saturday 6 May.
WHAT IS FISH & GAME?
Fish & Game is a statutory public entity,
established by Parliament under the
Conservation Act, to manage, maintain
and enhance sports fish and gamebirds,
and their habitats. It is not a lobby group
but an organisation with specific
responsibilities
under
Acts
of
Parliament, including the Conservation,
Resource Management, Walking Access,
Public Finance and Overseas Investment
Acts.
The New Zealand Fish & Game Council
represents the interests of anglers and
gamebird hunters nationally. The
Council and the 12 regional Fish &
Game councils are collectively known as
Fish & Game New Zealand. Fish &
Game receives no money from the
government. All funding is provided by
freshwater anglers and gamebird hunters
– a “user pays, user says” tradition
dating back 150 years.

EROSION-CONTROLLING
POPLARS, WILLOWS
AVAILABLE AGAIN SOON
Hill country farmers whose erosion-prone properties drain
to the Kaipara Harbour may be eligible for a share of more
than 3500 free poplar poles in a joint Northland Regional
Council-Ministry for Primary Industries initiative.
The council and ministry are currently two years into a four
-year project targeting areas of high erosion risk on hill
country properties in the very large greater Kaipara
catchment which drains roughly one-third of Northland.
Regional councillor Rick Stolwerk says priority is given to
applicants in areas the council has identified as especially
erosion-prone. Similarly, those who already have Farm
Water Quality Improvement Plans or specific planting plans
with council will also rank highly.
Councillor Stolwerk says outside of the Kaipara initiative,
the council is also offering half-price poplars and willows
from its to other Northland landowners keen to help control
erosion and protect water quality.
About 6000 three-metre poplar poles and a similar number
of smaller poles ranging from 1.5m to 3.0m will be
harvested soon from the Flyger Rd, Mata nursery near
Whangarei to supply both the Kaipara and wider north.
Councillor Stolwerk advises anyone interested in securing
some of the poles – either partially or fully subsidised – to
contact council land management staff as soon as possible
to arrange a consultation and site visit.
Interested landowners should contact the Land Management
Team directly on 0800 002 004 as soon as possible to allow
time to arrange a farm visit to undertake a required planting
plan. Orders can be made while stocks last or until
Wednesday 31 May 2017 (whichever is earlier).
Councillor Stolwerk says everything people need to know
about establishing poplars and willows is also available
from the council’s website via:
Photo below: Poplar and Willow Co-ordinator Wayne Teal,
left, and Coastal South Constituency representative
Councillor Rick Stolwerk at the council's poplar and willow
nursery near Whangarei.

National Final.
The National Final is in Auckland this year, with the Awards dinner being held
at Sky City on 6 May. Here Niall, Delwyn and Blake will meet the finalists from
the other ten regions.
Blake Anderson also had intensive interviews and practical farming activities -
his were held on the demonstration farm at Hikurangi. The 19-year-old is farm
assistant on Carlton and Michelle Smyth’s 420-cow, 180ha property on Gibbons
Road, Kaiwaka. He has developed a passion for dairying and is working toward
a management role at this stage. Blake has a second passion for hunting.
Pictured above here on the farm.
The most promising dairy trainee award went to Ange Cook. Ange, who comes
from Ruawai, has been working on Anderson’s Baldrock Road farm for six
months. When she arrived, she was encouraged to enter the NZ Dairy Industry
award challenge, and has relished the challenge and the learning. Ange, photo
above, will stay on Anderson’s farm and will enter the competition next season.
