SURF LIFESAVING SUCCESS
Kaiwaka locals Quintin Brown, Bailey Hudson and Tyler
Flannagan, who are lifeguards at Waipu Cove, competed in
the annual Bay of Plenty Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Long
Haul Race on Saturday 6 May. This was their first ever
competition.
They raced from Ohope to Mount Maunganui - a distance
of 95km - stopping in at four beaches (Matata, Pukehina,
Papamoa and Omanu Beaches) and completing a series of
challenges. These challenges test Surf Lifeguards’ ability to
respond to a callout or rescue by quickly setting up the
Inflatable Rescue Boat and heading out onto the water.
There were thirteen boats entered, and they came second in
the U21’s and seventh overall. They were the youngest
crew competing. Well done!

WEATHER
Well here we go again, another month
on the calendar turned over. By the
time you read this it will be half way
through May.
Well what a month April was. Early on
we had the wind and cloudy and rain
and then we got rain, rain, rain. I was
beginning to wonder if it would stop.
Everyone was growling about the big
dry and then we got the big wet. The
weather did calm down later on in the
month with very pleasant days. No
problems about the water table as the
Brynderwyn waterfall was ‘full on’ and
is still flowing well.
In April this year we had at our house
260mm rain and April 2016 we had
49mm.
Our driest Aprils since 1987 were
2005, 2010 and 2012 with 28mm. Our
wettest April since 1987 is 2017 with
260mm.
In the first four months of this year we
have had 725mm and last year we had
437mm. The last wettest first four
months of any year since 1987 was
1988 with 718mm. This year we beat it
by 7mm.
We had rain on 14 days in April this
year. With all the rain we have had I
have never, ever, in my 25 years of
golf at Mangawhai seen so many new
lakes on the fairway and so much
water. Unbelievable.
A question in a math class: You have
two apples in one hand and then you
add another four apples to your hand.
What do you have? Answer. A very big
hand.
~Bev
There’s not much to report this
month from our meeting as only
15 members survived the Anzac
preparations to attend the meeting,
think some may have forgotten the
date too.
Gloria our President thanked all who
helped before and on ANZAC Day.
We would especially like to thank the
young people who came forward to
help with the dishes and getting the
rooms ready for the lunch after the
service. Also many thanks to the
members of the public who brought
along plates to help with the catering.
We also appreciate the help of the
Mangawhai CWI and Kaiwaka Garden
Club who helped with the making of
the wreaths, we are so lucky to have a
community that pulls together like this.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY to this month’s
Birthday Girls Jan Mann and Doreen
Woodhouse (It would be great to be 40
again!!)
Thank you to those who attended our
roast beef dinner on Good Friday and
we hope to see even more at our roast
lamb night on 12th May.
There is to be a committee meeting on
15th May in the Clubrooms at 11 a.m.
Our next monthly meeting will be on
Thursday 25th May 1.15 p.m.
New members welcome. ~Ann

Thanks for the great feedback on our
courses and new activities in our
centre. Our Weaving course begins on
May 17th at 11am, bring flax if you are

- if you would like your child to have
some after school fun and get some
supervision with their homework. Our
tutoring has also started. We have 2
spaces left for primary students and our
secondary students are pretty much full
but please feel free to come and put
your name down, we may be able to
extend to another day if the interest is
there.
We have some of our flyers in Jaques if
you wish to see what other courses,

From the Principal
We welcome all our students back to
school for Term 2.
This term we look forward to a visit to
Matakohe to visit the portable
Astrolab
Planetarium.
This
is
sponsored by the Matakohe Kauri
Museum to celebrate Matariki.
Our visiting author, Tim Tipene, has
left a deep impression on many of our
students. They were entranced by his
life story, from a difficult childhood to
a successful writer today. He has
enthused many of our children to be
writers and become published. Please
ask your children about the visit from
Tim Tipene, and encourage their
personal writing.
We had a fire drill last week. I am
pleased to say everyone was safely out
of the classrooms, down on the lower
field and accounted for within 4
minutes.
~Warm regards, Rosie Ellis
Broken Window at School
Our New Entrants came to school one
day recently to find that a window in
their classroom had been smashed
during the night. Their
equipment had glass throughout. Our
caretaker had come up through the
night and vacuumed as much as he
could and the teacher has washed all
the equipment. Nevertheless the
children were still finding pieces of
glass, and were distraught.
Thankfully our school neighbours
were alert and managed to stop the
vandal(s) doing any more damage. We
are very grateful for this community
support.
If anyone has information that could
help us identify the young person who
did this to our school, please get in
touch with the school or the Police
asap.
No More Roller Shoes at School
There have been a large number of
accidents at school, caused by students
wearing shoes that have roller wheels
in them. Grazes to knees, elbows, legs
and heads are frequent. Teeth are very
vulnerable. Because of this we ask that
these shoes never be worn to school
and at school.

Rotary presents Jeremy Scott at
the Centennial Hall on Tuesday
23rd May at 7.30pm.
Come and hear this inspirational
speaker and bring your friends along.
Jeremy wasn’t only born with a huge
hole in his heart, but with adventure
and a love of the great outdoors pulsing
through his veins.
Despite seeing more of the world that
most people could ever dream of, he
felt there was still more to explore and
on the 5th October 2011, he set off for
what turned out to be a 2½ year
51,916km solo bike ride around the
globe.
At the completion of that life
changing journey, Jeremy wrote his
first book “The Long Road From A
Broken Heart” and is now dedicating
his life to inspire others.
This is a fundraiser for the NZ Heart
Foundation and entry fee will be $10.
Tea and biscuits will follow the
presentation.

Wow Winter has surely arrived. It’s getting
cold out there!
Even though we are between buildings we
are still working for Kaiwaka. Part of our
outreach programme is some knowledge
sharing around making jams and chutneys.
All you need is some enthusiasm, a sense
of humour and some empty jars. We are
being given excess fruit and vegetables.
Beth is more than happy to show you how
to create something that you can take home
with you. It certainly makes a meal that
much yummier when you know you have
something you created from the earth to
brighten the meal.
Want to know more? Contact Beth on
beths@remaxrealty.net.nz or phone 027
4937801.
As the weather has turned the need for
heating is that much more important.
Remember if you own your house or you
are renting and have a community services
card or are on a low income then there are
subsidies to help ensure your home is
insulated.
Contact
www.healthyhomesnorth.co.nz for more
information.
Are you having trouble
with heating your home?
Let us know if you need assistance, we
have items that are constantly being
donated to pass on to the community. So, if
you need something to help keep you
warm please do get in contact.
The very exciting news is that we have
almost finalised an agreement for Kaiwaka
Cares’ new home. It will be good to have a
social space so we can get together and
catch up. At this stage, we expect to be
back in full force by June. We are very
excited of the possibilities with the new
venture and can’t wait for the adventure
ahead.
Remember Kaiwaka is a great town
because of its people. So, keep caring and
sharing with each other. If there is anything
we can do to assist you call Janine

For those who don’t
know about us here
at Linking Hands, we
primarily run a free
Health Shuttle Service, transporting
people to Health related appointments.
We rely on donations and small grants
to stay afloat.
If you have having trouble getting to
your medical appointment, then give us
a call. Our drivers are all volunteers, so
we appreciate as much notice of your
appointment as possible so that we can
give our volunteers as much notice as
possible, and also it makes life less
stressful trying to organise things in the
office!
We will pick you up from home, drive
you to your appointment, then drop
you back home again afterwards. Our
pick up boundary on the south side is
roughly Oruawharo Rd, Topuni and we
take
folk
to
appointments
in
Warkworth through to Whangarei and
in between.
We have a van with a wheelchair hoist,
based in Maungaturoto, as well as two
cars, and we also have branches in
Mangawhai and Bream Bay, and are
kept fairly busy! We are an ACC
vendor, so with pre travel approval
from your Case Manager, can help
ACC clients as well.
At the office in Maungaturoto, we have
three computers available for the
public to access the internet (for $2 per
half hour), and the ‘Book Nook’,
where we sell books, DVDs and jigsaw
puzzles that have been donated to us.
These extras are to help raise a few
extra dollars towards our running costs.
Maybe there are some folk who would
like to give something back to the
community and be volunteer drivers
for us? If this sounds like something
you may be interested in, either pop
into the office if you’re over in
Maungaturoto, or give us a call on (09)
431 8969 and have a chat. Drivers are
all Police vetted.
Our AGM is coming up on Tuesday, 4
July, 7pm at the office - 131 Hurndall
St, Maungaturoto, so if driving isn’t
your thing, maybe you would like to
join us as a Board member?
It would be great to see some new
faces as everyone is welcome to come
along even if you don’t want to join
our team!

Impressive NCEA results for
Otamatea High School
Final 2016 NCEA results are in and
Otamatea High School has punched
well above its weight with a set of
outstanding NCEA results, as reported
in the NZ Herald in April. 91% pass
rate in NCEA level 1, 90.9% pass rate
in NCEA level 2 and 88.5% pass rate
in NCEA level 3. We also achieved
97.5% pass rates in NCEA level 1
literacy and numeracy, and 66.7% of
our year 13s gained university
entrance (UE). All of these results are
above the national averages. We also
received a special mention in the NZ
Herald as the most improved of all
decile 4 schools in the country over
the past year.
Well done to all our hardworking
students and staff, and a big thank you
to our amazing families/whānau who
provided the valuable support that
enabled our students to succeed.
~Rachel Clothier-Simmonds, Principal
Otamatea High School – A student’s
view
“My high school life has been solely
at Otamatea. It's come a long way in
the short seven years I've been here. A
playground, a renovation to the
science labs and junior block,
heat pumps, chromebooks, a new
uniform, and now a paint job. But
these are just the exterior changes.
What makes me proud to be part of
Otamatea is the mana and pride the
students but also the staff have for our
school. This pride has definitely
grown stronger in the years I have
been here. In Year Seven there were
lunchtime detentions, Year Nine stand
downs, Year 10 there were fights and
suspensions. There's no denying it was
a low point for us.
But now we have lunchtime sport
trainings for different activities almost
every day, everyone getting involved
in iwi competition like athletics and
the haka competition, kids playing on
the astroturf morning, interval, and
lunch, whanau activities, and Ngapuhi
beating Maniapoto! We have had next
to no suspensions and stand downs.
We all are happy students maximising
our schooling. This is a school I am
proud of and when I look at you I'd
like to think you are as well. Let's
keep paddling in this direction,
because I believe our waka is going
the right way! “

KAIWAKA WELCOME SIGNS
There is $5000 being made available to go towards the
construction of two welcome signs/sculptures for Kaiwaka.
We have a proposal that these are sculptures rather than just
signs, as we would like to make something special for
Kaiwaka.
We need to finalise designs and positioning and put in an
application before the end of June, so there is some
pressure. I have designed a number of options which I am
seeking input from the community. Here are a few ideas for
consideration. There are more. We propose that they are
constructed of steel and concrete, then carved and
painted. They would be hopefully quite large.
The funding, if approved will cover some of the
construction costs so we will need to source further
funding. I am also seeking help with this project, so if you
are interested or have some ideas or suggestions or would
like to get involved with construction please get in touch. I
will be at the Kaiwaka library with the designs on Thursday
18th May, 10am, if you have any ideas please come along.
or just contact me. Marijke Valkenburg 0221231160
