The Te Tai Tokerau Nga Manu Kōrero
Speech Contest was held at Otamatea
High School from 7 to 9th June.
Pictured above is Aroha Lee Connelly-
Nahi from Kaiwaka, Yr 9 at Otamatea
High School. This was her first time in
this contest, and she did extremely
well, so much so, she has been
encouraged to do it again next
year. She managed to compose her
nerves and deliver a brilliant speech.
On Wednesday Parekaahu Paikea, also
from Kaiwaka, welcomed guests to the
High School, and kaumatua Rau
Morgan gave the mihi.
Below: JMB Rally after match - KSA
Sergeant Peter William Alfred Peterson,
20935, left New Zealand from Wellington
on 11 October 1916 of the New Zealand
Divisional Employment Company on the
Tofua after working as a builder in
Dargaville. He arrived at Sling Camp,
England on 29 December 1916. Known as
Alf, he was a 35 year old carpenter/joiner,
married to my grandmother Marion and
had four young children.
Grandpop’s diary begins 1
January 1917
and covers daily comments about training,
time in hospital, leave time in Edinburgh,
London. The excerpt below tells of the time he left England for France and his
experience as part of the Salvage Party. Although the daily entries are short we
can draw a picture of the war at Messines Ridge. Many understated, eg. the
‘stunt’ on 7 June – this was when the NZ tunnellers bombs really blew!

MATARIKI
Te Ao Marama Cultural Centre at Te Hana is presenting a
‘2017 Matariki Celebration with the Stars’ with Denis
Marsh and Brendan Dugan, on Friday 23rd June. The doors
open at 5pm and the Show is at 8pm. Phone
09 4238701 or
09 4239566 or email: tehana@xtra.co.nz for more
information or to book tickets.
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars also
known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter – late May or
early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new
year.
Matariki literally means the ‘eyes of god’ (mata ariki) or
‘little eyes’ (mata riki). According to myth, when Ranginui,
the sky father, and Papatūānuku, the earth mother, were
separated by their children, the god of the winds,
Tāwhirimātea, became so angry that he tore out his eyes
and threw them into the heavens.
Traditionally, Matariki was a time to remember those who
had died in the last year. But it was also a happy event –
crops had been harvested and seafood and birds had been
collected. With plenty of food in the storehouses, Matariki
was a time for singing, dancing and feasting.
Matariki, or Māori New Year celebrations were once
popular, but stopped in the 1940s. In 2000, they were
revived. Only a few people took part at first, but in just a
few years thousands were honouring the ‘New Zealand
Thanksgiving’. A special feature of Matariki celebrations is
the flying of kites – according to ancient custom they
flutter close to the stars. Reference ~teara.govt.nz

From the Principal
We have had a big box of new books
donated to our school library by a
family. Thank you.
Mrs Tornquist participated in an
educational promotion, and has been
given 20 top selling books for our
school library. We appreciate the
generosity and care shown for our
school.
Thanks to Matassa Painting Ltd, the
company who painted the school, we
have received a donation of 40 pairs of
black shorts, for our students to wear
at Kapa Haka and for special sporting
occasions. Very smart!
Northpower came to our school to talk
to our students about being safe
around electricity. The children really
enjoyed seeing the opossum with big
red eyes which was a prop for the talk.
Kind regards,
~Rosie Ellis
Hi-viz Vests
Thanks to Pat Buxton, Fonterra has
donated hi-viz vests for all the children
at our school. These are an excellent
safety tool for our children, and they

HAKARU RSA
WOMEN’S SECTION
Well, here we are already heading in to
the 6th month of the year, with the
shortest day of the year but a few days
away. Onward summer.
May brought us a bit of everything.
Fine, calm, windy as south westerlies,
sunny rain, cloudy, torrents of rain,
showery days, thunder, lightning - all
very, very frightening. After all it is the
beginning of winter. Droughts have
been broken as we head on into the
middle of winter.
At our house for May we had 110mm
of rain compared to 101 in 2016. Our
wettest May since 1987 was 2001 with
281mm and our driest May was 2007
with 21mm.
For the first 5 months of 2017 we had
835mm and 2016 we had 538mm.
Our wettest first 5 months since 1987
was 2011 with 854mm and our driest
first 5 months was 1999 with 108.
We had rain on 9 days in May this year
and for 2016 we rain on 15 days.
I am out of May jokes at the moment
however MAY well I ask who is the
biggest victim of the Yo Yo effect?
The answer is the moon as it gains and
loses every month.
I hope you have all survived the
weather problems out there are taking
care as you go about your everyday
work be it inside or out. We have heard
more shooting this hunting season than
we have heard in a few years now. We
have had some cracker days in May
and some in June so long may it
continue.

OCS is fortunate to have a dedicated
Governance Board which in turn
means that Management, staff and
volunteers are equally dedicated and
focused on providing the best service
towards those in the community
requiring
professional
help.
As
mentioned previously our Manager is
involved in the setting up of the
Kaipara branch of the Government’s
new Children’s Team initiative. This
reinforces our existing main focus –
the safety and welfare of children;
equally important to us is the provision
of assistance to vulnerable adults.
Financial Mentor
The OCS Financial Mentor works
alongside clients to provide holistic
support, which can include drawing up
a budget sheet to present to WINZ and
even to providing a parcel made up
from our Food Bank to ensure
immediate relief where necessary. We
have another qualified budget support
worker on call to mentor and assist in
this service.
The Parent Coach has one to one
sessions with parents of one or more
children as well as group ‘Toolbox’
courses. She works with parents of
toddlers up to teenagers.
The Counsellors – two women and one
man are available to provide qualified,
professional confidential services – if a
client chooses they may make a
voluntary donation towards running
costs.
Thank you
We thank the ladies of Otamatea
Quilters and Mid-Northern Spinners
for the blankets, quilts, children’s
socks and hats etc. Many families with
young ones have benefited from the
shelves of good quality children’s
clothing we have, and we’re
always getting more - one new
mum pointed out that she gets items
from us and as her boy grows, she
brings them back in good order for
someone else to make use of, so do
come and have a look if your baby or
toddler needs clothing.
Surplus Produce
Thanks also must go to the many locals
who have brought in their surplus
produce, which of course includes of
Ann Shanks and her team at Arty
Farties. The feijoa trees in the area
have produced masses of the huge
sweet fruit this year and we are
fortunate to have been given loads to
share and enjoy.
Our Seniors
The Seniors are entertained once a
month by brilliant local musicians and
singers- so talented and such fun. It is
amazing just how many artists there
are in the area who happily perform for
us – and we thank you sincerely. We
love doing this lunch for our seniors
each month; it is a pleasure to see so
many coming along, meeting up with
their friends and neighbours. As the
catering moves into a new direction we
must make some extra special notes of
thanks to all of those fantastic people
who have been instrumental in making
each occasion a success. Among these
are the awesome local businesses of
Maungaturoto Butchery, Sitting Duck
Takeaways, Café de Mairis who have,
at different times, gone out of their
way to help with the menus. We are
grateful to you and all those other
generous people who have willingly
extended a helping hand to ensure our
seniors have the special day they so
deserve.

Not Enough Hours in the Day
I often get asked by people about what
Kaiwaka Cares does. So much of what
we do is ‘invisible’ or takes a long time
to come to fruition. A classic example
of this is the work we do with Kaiwaka
Can.
Kaiwaka Can is where the germ of the
idea of Kaiwaka Cares first occurred
nearly 2 and a half years ago. We still
work with the advisory group through
sharing information, helping out on
project teams and assisting with other
community groups. Upcoming items
you will be seeing that we were part of
is the tree planting in Kaiwaka,
pedestrian refuges, welcome sculptures
… and the list goes on.
When we were still in our old social
space it was often perceived that that
was all we were about.
In the background, we are working on
other projects to help out many areas of
the community. Janine and Helen both
are active volunteers at the library.
Beth and Janine are part of the Civil
Defence Community Welfare Group.
As well Beth is a key member of the
Neighbourhood Support project, Helen
assists her eco-community, and Janine
helps out at her church.
Additionally, we assist community
members when they need advocacy.
This often isn’t requested during
‘business hours’. We get requests
anywhere and everywhere. Recent
requests have been for advice,
assistance with moving, clothing for
whanau, emotional support and liaison
with government departments. No day
is ever quite the same.
On top of the volunteer work we all
have other lives, jobs, families, friends,
hobbies and so much more.
So, thank you for
being patient if it
sometimes takes a few
hours for us to get back to you.
Everyone in Kaiwaka is important to
us, it’s just sometimes we feel we are
juggling a little more than we have
hands for.
A new home for Kaiwaka Cares
Yes, we have a new home. We are
eagerly waiting for the preparations to
be completed so we can move in.
Where is it? ….. It’s in the Heart of
Kaiwaka. The building formerly known
as the Ark is being ‘reborn’ by its new
owners as the Heart. It will be a space
for caring, sharing and community. We
anticipate we will be in by the end of
June. It’s exciting to see the
combination of groups who will be
using the space and what will be
provided for the community. Keep an
eye out for opening details.
Remember Kaiwaka is a great town
because of its people. Keep caring and
sharing with each other. If there is
anything we can do to assist you call
