Lots of things are ready to happen in Kaiwaka as reported at
Kaiwaka Can last Monday at their monthly meeting. The
frustration is that we want to see more completed more
quickly. But that is the reality of a very small town working
with a very small council and a very large NZTA.
Changes to State Highway One
The change of speed zone to 60kph throughout is still
waiting on final Wellington approval. Along with the speed
zone there will be two pedestrian safety zones go in, a new
footpath from the Bakery shops down towards Oneriri Road
and tree planting from Three Furlongs up towards the
Suzuki shop. There will also be extensive road markings,
another Your Speed Is sign and a change of the 100k
boundary sign a few metres northward.
Also with NZTA at the moment are the designs for the
gateway sculptures that will welcome people to Kaiwaka,
an ambitious and exciting project but again subject to
NZTA regulations.
What about the other roads round the district?
There was a good attendance at a meeting set up by Council
to talk about the Council roading policies and budgets. The
short story is we have a very high proportion of unsealed
roads in various states of repair or disrepair and a budget
not able to meet all the needs all at once. We need to realise
how small the rating
base is in Kaipara that makes an instant fix impossible.
However two members of Kaiwaka Can did a road trip with
three Council members to look at problem roads in the
district. It was a helpful exercise but the clear consensus
was that Gibbons Road at present is in the worst condition.
We are setting up a system for every road with problems to
have someone monitor the state of the road every three
months and Kaiwaka Can will summarise this and send it in
to Council so they have a constant supply of data about our
roads.
The playground is up and swinging...
Great news and it looks so good with all the new
equipment. We are delighted at the use it is getting already.
The playground fence is going to be built by Northtec when
the weather is less liquid. All the plans and materials are
ready and we look forward to this long planned addition.
Giving the bridge to nowhere a new home
You have probably heard there is a former motorway
footbridge lying unused in a paddock near Matakohe. We
have been exploring ways we might obtain this and use it to
make our foot links better across either one or two of our
bridges. It is a major project and we are starting by asking
for engineering advice from Council. But we had a great
discussion on how foot bridges might open up and link up a
series of walkways round much of Kaiwaka to make our
little town very foot friendly. We will keep you in touch
with developments and probably have a public meeting
some time to share creative ideas for the long term.
A business expo...
Thanks so much to Beth Stone for all the work put into a
local business expo on July 8
th
. We hope this is only the
first of these which will give local businesses of all sorts a
profile in the community.
A new home for Kaiwaka Cares
The Heart or Ngakau, formerly The Ark, opened this past
Saturday. It is a great venture to provide social space and
services in Kaiwaka. Kaiwaka Cares will be a key tenant
but many other groups will be using it in the future.

The Little Town of Lights
The Venturer Scouts are planning a major
jamboree in Kaiwaka, called “Illumination”,
based partly on our reputation as the little
town of lights, something that embarrasses
us a bit as so many lights have gone out. A
few more are appearing again (on the
Anglican Church, round Eutopia...) but we
would love to see us back into our full glory
again. If you have any interest in lights for
your group, business or home, get in touch
with Kaiwaka Can and we will pass it on to
Lars our lighting specialist.
Lots more happening but this is an article,
not a book. We are delighted with support
for Kaiwaka Can, now going towards three
years. It is an open membership, public
welcome group and we encourage anyone
interested or with ideas or problems about
town to join us. We meet third Monday each
month, Archie Bull Hall (behind the
Anglican Church) 5.30pm. You can contact the chair for any more information.

Thank you to Noel
Leeming and Hewlett
Packard for our awesome
most unexpected trip to
Bermuda to watch the
last
week
of
the
America’s Cup Racing.
The highlight of course
was that we brought
“The Auld Mug” home.
Sadly we did not get to
the celebrations as you
needed tickets to get in
to the Village and
Grandstand and both
were sold out.
Our accommodation was
staying on a 45-foot luxury catamaran.
Apart from watching the races and
practice runs, we did some yachting
and motoring around the bays. We
travelled around the Great Sound and
into little bays and 18 miles up the
southern coast to St. Georges, the
original capital city of Bermuda;
Bermuda’s capital city is now
Hamilton.
We had cloudy weather the first day,
then beautiful sunny days and rain also.
The water was a beautiful aqua blue
colour and very, very salty tasting, as
they do not get the incoming and
outgoing tide very much. The
temperatures were in the mid 30s.
Bermuda is made up of little islands
and some are joined together with
bridges. It has tropical growth and all
the house roofs are white so as to keep
them cool. Also, building material is so
expensive to import as it with all other
items and produce etc that they make
their roof out of limestone and cement
tiles, as once upon a time they were cut
from limestone into slates. The houses
are painted pinks, blues, green, aqua,
yellow, mauve etc.
We were supplied with breakfast and
lunch, and taken ashore for our evening
dinner at our own expense, travelling in
a RIB (rubber inflatable boat) - like a
dinghy - and sometimes a larger RIB,
and picked from the jetty later. The
RIB does trips to all the catamarans
that needed it and picks us up every
hour on the hour.
The locals are a friendly lot and very
helpful. The roads are two way only
but seem narrower than that with palm
trees and lush foliage growing right up
to the edges of the road in some places.
The racing was great to watch. We had
to anchor where we were told on the
outer edge of the boundary line. We
shared
our
catamaran
with
2
Australians, 4 Americans and the crew
of two were all against us. What a
sweet defeat. It even had the
Americans in tears.
My name was entered in this
promotion being a Noel Leeming club
member and Hewlett Packard as I own
a H.P. printer. I purchased 2 printer ink
cartridges and did not know anything
about the promotion as I had not seen
any posters about it. After I had been
phoned and told about this win I looked
it up on the computer as I thought it
was may be a hoax (of which I was
assured it was not) and an e-mail and
phone call appeared a couple of hours
later. I was told I had won a $15.000.00
trip to Bermuda for 2 staying on a
luxury catamaran for the final week of
the America’s Cup racing. All transfers
airfares etc paid for etc plus $1500.00
N.Z spending money. This was totally
awesome as Icon Events took care of
absolutely everything for us even to the
taxi to take us back to the airport.
It does still seem a dream and totally
unbelievable. And the “Auld Mug” is
back in New Zealand.

Hope everyone survived the school
holidays. We ran a great program out
of the centre, everyone seemed to
enjoy themselves and we loved having
the kids here. We had kids from
Kaiwaka, Mangawhai, Wellsford and
even some from out of the area. We do
not the run the program to make
money so we only charge what it costs
so hopefully it is accessible to working
parents or just parents with bored kids.
We want to run the program again if it
is wanted and needed. We have
received great feedback from families
so hopefully this will be the case.
We have some new courses next term,
Living on a Budget Course, Adult
Literacy and Learners License Course
and a Teen Life Skills Course,
Business Course, and our Weaving
Class is on every Wednesday from
11am. Please give us a call if you
would like to register. We also have
some possible new classes
coming up and will let you
know when they are
confirmed.
We have our Friday support group at
11am every week - a chance to meet
and discuss your life issues and
challenges and receive support and
tools to alleviate stress and anxiety.
And also we are here for anybody who
feels they need support in areas of their
life whether its financial, emotional,
relationship issues. We offer advocacy
for you with agencies or any agents
you may be dealing with, feel free to
pop in anytime.
And finally don’t forget that we have
our monthly over 65’s lunch here on
the first Monday of the month from
11am-1.30pm, please RSVP so we can
arrange catering.
Have a great fortnight. ~Kirstie & Iris

Winter Christmas celebrations for St
John Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto
ambulance stations
St John Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto
stations enjoyed a pleasant dinner and
social evening at the Three Furlongs
Hotel on Friday 30 June, where some
very special presentations were made.
Vivienne (Viv) Goldsmith and Amilla
Ranken, both from Kaiwaka, were
presented with their National Diploma
by Station Manager Stephen Rosser.
The diploma means they have achieved
Authority to Practice as Emergency
Medical Technicians. This is achieved
after attending in-class training and
spending lots of hours on the road, and
takes approximately two years to
complete.
Viv, who is full-time Principal at
Tauhoa Primary School, says how
much she values the training and
friendship gained through being part of
St John. Viv and her husband have
been in Kaiwaka for three-and-a-half
years and she says it is great to be able
to support her community.
Amilla has been with St John for two-
and-a-half years and has lived in
Kaiwaka with her husband for over six
years. She is a small-town girl and
recognises that many communities like
Kaiwaka, which are seen to be doing
well, can only achieve this with the
support and care of volunteers like
those at St John.
Julia Leaf has been with St John for
three years and gained her National
Diploma in 2016. She is from the
Maungaturoto Station and received her
three-year service award at the event.
Julia is part of a busy family of six, and
she says it is a privilege to help people
in their time of need.
Viv also received her three-year service
award, as did Monique Powell.
Monique achieved her National
Diploma in 2014 and works part-time
at Westmount School in Maungaturoto.
She is also a paid casual staff member
with St John. Helping and interacting
with others is what she enjoys most
about St John, and being able to use the
skills she has learnt.
Rosser says, “Although everybody
leads very busy lives, they all volunteer
their spare time to be on-call for our
community. Congratulations and thank
you, to staff at both the Kaiwaka and
Maungaturoto stations, for your service
to us all. We are so very proud of your
achievements.”
If you are interested in joining our team
as an ambulance officer, please send an
application to https://join.stjohn.org.nz/
home or phone Maungaturoto and
Kaiwaka Station Manager Stephen
Rosser on 021355734.

DOG REGISTRATION
Eighty years ago: In the days when registering your dog you received a dog
collar: “GONE TO AUSTRALIA WITH COUNTY'S DOG TAXES.
DISTRICT CONSTABLE EXTRADITION WANTED.
At a meeting of the Otamatea County Council on Wednesday [27July 1927], the
clerk reported that the district constable, who was the dog tax collector for the
Kaiwaka riding, had sold 158 collars and received £14/9/6, plus his commission.
He (the clerk) had found that the man had left the district suddenly without
paying the amount due to the council. He immediately put the matter in the
hands of Constable Boag, of Maungaturoto, who informed him that the man had
cleared out to Australia. The shopkeepers in Kaiwaka district also had been
"taken down" by means of valueless cheques. The Police Department, the clerk
said, wanted the council to pay the expenses of extraditing the man from
Australia. It would cost about £30.” ~From paperspast.natlib.govt.nz: Auckland

From Thelma’s Scrapbook …
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT years ago, on
March 31, 1889, the Parisian landmark the Eiffel Tower
was inaugurated after being created for the Universal
Exhibition of 1889 which marked the centenary of the
French Revolution.
The challenge to “study the possibility of erecting an iron
tower on the Champ-de-Mars" was a competition launched
by the "Journal Officiel”, and the winning entry from
structural engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel, engineers
Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, and architect
Stephen Sauvestre, beat over a hundred other entries.
Gustave Eiffel was born on December 15, 1852,in Dijon,
and began a career in metallurgy after
obtaining a diploma in chemistry from Ecole Centrale in
1855. After gradually moving into design and engineering
in 1867 Eiffel started his own business after being self-
employed as a consultant engineer for a number of years.
Over the following fifteen years, Eiffel was involved in
building a number of bridges and viaducts, and on January
26, 1887, work on the foundations of the Eiffel Tower
began.
This work on the structure's foundations took over five
months to complete, as excavations were carried out using
spades alone and rubble was removed by horse and cart.
Around fifty engineers and designers produced almost 5,300
drawings to illustrate Eiffel's plans, while a hundred
workers built up over 18,000 different parts of the tower in
a workshop. On site, a further 132 men built the tower from
the pre-assembled pieces.
Although the tower was meant to be dismantled after twenty
years, Eiffel knew it could be useful scientifically as a
station for meteorological and astronomical observation as
well as enabling experiments in physics and light and wind
studies.
When the tower was built, the total cost for the building was
7,799,401.31 gold francs and it remained the tallest building
in the world until the Chrysler building in New York topped
its height of 312 metres by just seven metres. The height of
the tower today is 324 metres after the addition of television
antennas to the flagpole at the top.
The total weight of the tower, which is made of iron, is
10,100 tons. Eiffel chose to use iron for the tower as it had
greater resistance to wind and weather than wood or stone,
and the relative lightness of the metal meant that, at their
deepest, foundations only had to be fifteen metres.
ln order to protect the metal from the weather, the entire
structure is painted every seven years, with around sixty
tons of paint used each time. However, the structure can still
be affected by sun and wind. In sunny weather, heat can
cause the side of the tower facing the sun to expand, while
the shaded side remains unaffected. This causes the tower to
lean up to eighteen centimetres in the opposite direction
from the sun.
The tower is periodically lit up
for special occasions such as
Bastille Day and Chinese New
Year, and for the countdown to
the year 2000, over 20,000
individual lightbulbs were
installed for a spectacular
display.
As a famous landmark, the
tower has been featured in a
number of films, including
Louis Lumiere’s ”Panorama
Pendant L'ascension De La
Tour Eiffel" (1897) which was
the earliest and, possibly most
famously, the 1984 James
Bond film "A View To A
Kill".
It is one of the most visited
and recognised landmarks in
Paris. It is thought that over
200 million people have
visited the attraction since its
inauguration.”

about two years, was wounded in the hand early last
October. He was born and educated in Auckland,
subsequently going North, where he was engaged in bush
contracting and agricultural pursuits. He is well-known
about Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto as an enthusiastic
cricketer and tennis player. Mr Shelton's older son, Private

reinforcement, was also wounded at the Somme, early in
October, and after having been in hospital for several

At the last Kaipara Council meeting in
Dargaville on 11th July, the newly
established Incorporated Society Tika
Whai made a presentation to the
Councillors.
Tika Whai is a group of design,
construction
and
environmental
professionals and Iwi from the region,
who feel they should not stand on the
sideline while Council appears to get
suffocated in the overwhelming
amount of development in the greater
Kaipara area.
In their address, Tika Whai proposed a
3-fold approach to support coping with
developments:
i) Council to establish a Development
Design Panel with a Landscape
Architect/Ecologist,
a
Registered
Architect and a Town Planner, with
authority to determine on development
applications. Similar Design Panels,
with its members selected by the
respective professional bodies, already
operate in other Councils.
This Panel would be funded
by the Applicant.
ii) Tika Whai offers to assist
Council, free of charge, with
the development of strategic,
long-term
visions
for
development
across
the
Kaipara, in an advisory
capacity.
iii) Tika Whai offers, also free
of charge, to support Council
staff
through
pro-active
involvement
with
development decisions and
regulation, by such means as
providing a pre-application
filter
for
larger
development/
subdivision proposals.
Although the above in first instance
relates to developments in and around
Mangawhai, Tika Whai is aware of
other developments, including the
impact of the motorway extending to
the borders of the Kaipara District (and
Kaiwaka then the first Northland
township after the motorway), and
proactive planning for the entire area is
timely.
Anyone in the greater Kaipara area,
interested to contribute professionally
to Tika Whai, including people with for
instance a legal or an economic
background, are invited to contact the
Tika Whai Secretary, architect Dave
Launder (dave@led.co.nz). Note that
Tika Whai is a not for profit
organisation, and its members cannot
commercially
benefit
from
its
activities.
