RUBBISH PICK UPS
The Kaipara Refuse Ltd rubbish collectors are supposed pick up blue and yellow
bags only. But when they do pick up black bags, plastic containers and a lot of
litter the ratepayers are charged extra - this they do to help keep our roadsides
clean. Sadly we are all paying extra for those who are flouting the system.
Speaking with the Kaipara Refuse collectors last week on Oneriri Road, they
said the end of Parekura and
Rangiora Roads are the worst!
For example the pile of old
shoes scattered over the bags
was a sight to be seen - not!
And that putting the bags out
too soon means the rats, cats
and dogs make their presence
known.
Kaiwaka and Oneriri Road has
a Wednesday pick up of blue
and yellow bags only.
The green bags of Northland
Waste have a Monday pick up
in Kaiwaka and east of
Kaiwaka.

Kate Packard with her flowers courtesy
of Lindy, the flower girl.
“Kate has worked really hard on behalf
of our community. She saw a need and
persevered until she made it happen.
For a long time now the children,
waiting for the bus in the mornings at
the top of Puawai, have had no bus
shelter. Kate saw the need for a bus
shelter and went about making it
happen. This was not easy! She had to
contact many people and organise the
removal and placement of the bus
shelter. She had to negotiate with the
council.
She
called
on
many
community members who were happy
to help once they understood. I want to
thank Kate for not giving up and for
looking after the children in our
community. Enjoy the flowers. We
appreciate you!”
I feel Kate is very deserving of these
flowers. ~ Sharlene.

NZ director Niki Caro; based on a true story
and a bestselling book.
The time is 1939 and the place is Poland,
homeland of Antonina Zabinski and her
husband, Dr. Jan Zabinski. The Warsaw Zoo
flourishes under Jan's stewardship and
Antonina's care. When their country is
invaded by the Nazis, Jan and Antonina are
forced to report to the Reich's newly
appointed chief zoologist, Lutz Heck. The
Zabinskis covertly begin working with the
Resistance and put into action plans to save
the lives of hundreds from what has become
the Warsaw Ghetto.

WEATHER
Again, I must thank our neighbour Jan
who kept track of the weather while we
were in Bermuda. Seems we missed
some rough stuff. Or should I say did
not miss it!
July the 1
st
was a sparkling day
followed with a dreadfully wet
day. Thereafter was same old story of
wet days and some windy days. I did
notice the sun getting higher in the sky
towards summer. It is now getting
warmer and is above the trees that
block out the mid-winter sunshine.
Our wettest day of the month was the
21
st
with a few other days giving us 14
and 13mms. The ground is so soggy
and the water tables so high the water
in some places lays around for days or
weeks. The poor animals are up to their
bellies in mud in some places. July
was rather cold wet and windy.
At our house, we had for July 168mm
or 6 ½ inches in old terms. In 2016 we
had 197mm. Our wettest July since
1987 was 1998 with 602mm. Yes, that
is right. Our driest July since 1987 was
1993 with 33mm. Our wettest first
7months since 1987 was 2017 with
1241mm. and our driest was 1987 with
480mm. We had rain on 18 days in
July 2017 and 2016 we had rain on 17
days. Interesting to read my Aunty Nita
Blackstaffe’s diary from 1943, the
weather was much the same. Moving
into the spring not long to go
now. There are more than 12 daisies
on our lawn so spring must be nearly
here so I am told. I notice the buds on
the fruit trees are getting fatter every
day.
Well take care out there and look
forward to summer which is not far
away. No, I will not tell you how
many days left the end of the year.

He Pou Aroha Community Cenotaph on your
doorstep!
The Kauri Museum is extending an invitation to
members of our Kaipara community who would like to
contribute to Online Cenotaph- a national online portal
for stories of New Zealand service personnel, developed
by Auckland Museum.
Online Cenotaph contains the records of approximately 150,000 men and
women who served for New Zealand from the 19th Century through to today.
With the help of local communities throughout New Zealand, these records will
continue to be enriched and updated for future generations to remember.
The digitisation kiosks allow you to search Online Cenotaph, lay a virtual poppy
against a specific person’s name and contribute additional information to the
database. Over 65,000 people have discovered their connection using one of the
community kiosks. Each kiosk
contains an object photo booth
that enables you to digitise your
family’s war-related items such
as medals, diaries, letters and
more. The digitised objects are
uploaded to the relevant service
person Online Cenotaph record.

KAIWAKA SCHOOL
The New Fence
The new fence has been
erected to assist keeping
students safe. The gates
are fully open before and
after school but we need
to ensure they are closed
between 8.30am and 2.15
pm. They are opened by
pulling up the magna lock
at the top. Please make
sure you close them after
you when you come into the school during the day. This includes the gate on the
pathway to the pool and the one coming up the path from the church.
The paving is underway (at the front of the school) and is looking good. It will
be nice to have a place where the whole school can gather outside for powhiri.
Calf Club Day-Help Needed!
Parents are needed who can organise the Calf Club Day this year.
The ribbons have been made for this year and we have notes that can guide you
as to how to run the day. Please contact the school if you would like to be a part
of the team that organises the day. Remember the more people involved the
more the workload is shared.
Welcome Mr Nik Massey, a new teacher for Room 5, and Christine Harrison, a

LIBRARY
Come in - we're open!
Yes, the library is open once again, a
week ahead of schedule. Come and see
the work that has been done - the
fixing, the painting, and the new
carpet. It's looking very smart.
As I write this, we're not quite "all
there" yet. There are still some boxes
of non-fiction books and other things
to be brought back into the library, but
most of it is there - ready and waiting
to be borrowed once again.
Many thanks to everyone who has
taken part in this project - the hall
committee
members
(and
their
spouses)
who
undertook
the
maintenance
work;
the
library
volunteers who have put time into
packing up the library, shifting it all
out, helping with the painting, and
moving everything back again; and to
everyone else who has called in and
given an helping hand - it is all very
much appreciated.
Book review
Recently, I've read The Pretty
Delicious Cafe by Danielle Hawkins.
In the small,
coastal,
fictitious
lower
Northland
town
of
Ratai, good
friends Lia
and
Anna
run a cafe
together in
an
old
restored
house on a
hillside. It's
seriously
hard work,
horrendous
hours, and the mortgage is crippling,
but they're making a good go of it.
Anna is engaged to Lia's twin brother,
Rob. Lia's ex-boyfriend Isaac seems to
not have received the message that
their relationship is over, and keeps
asking - begging - her to come back.
And then a gorgeous stranger arrives in
town, and after scaring Lia half to
death by tapping on her window late
one night (looking for a jack so he can
fix his flat tyre, as you do), Lia starts to
think that the scenery might just be
improving.
But the past won't let go...
The author was, once upon a time, a
vet based in Mangawhai, and the
location of this story is a pretty familiar
and comfortable setting. I've read
another of Danielle's books, Dinner at
Rose's, which is on our shelves, and
loved them both. This book is on the
Dargaville shelves in our library until
early December 2017.
See you in the library! ~Wendy

Kaiwaka Bugle - 11 July 2017
Page 15
It's been a long time coming ... we're
finally open in our new home.
Kaiwaka Cares is really excited to be a
part of the renewal of the old Ark
opposite the 3 Furlongs. And it's
rebirth as the Heart. There is still lots
more to be done to get the Heart as we
all want it to be, I think we can all
admit the old girl is looking much
happier.
The concept behind the Heart is to be a
community hub for wellness, health,
community and support. So as she
continues to develop she will become a
place to nurture the heart of our
community.
The name "the Heart" conjures up love
and caring. If you look of it in terms of
Ngakau (te reo for Heart) it is even
more - it's about heart, mind, and soul.
So what will Kaiwaka Cares be doing
there? To start off with we are
rebuilding up to again provide
computers and internet to allow people
to connect to the world. More than that
we will continue to facilitate fellowship
and conversation and be available to
talk about anything and everything. To
help with this we have a wonderful
sitting room setup with tea and coffee
facilities and somewhere to sit to enjoy
the company of others or just sit back
and relax, the choice is yours.
Kaiwaka Cares is also in the process of
becoming a registered charity. This
will allow us to provide even more
programmes and support in the
community as we will be able to access
even more funding. Some exciting
times ahead.
Business Support:
Beth has been doing some amazing
work supporting business in our
community. Born from the business
expo held in July there will be a copy
of business networking/support groups
meeting
regularly
around
the
area. There will be two groups, one
more property oriented (sales agents,
builders, insurance, etc) and one more
general. You choose which one, or
both, you would like to attend. The
meetings will be held every three
weeks, rotating between Maungaturoto,
Kaiwaka and Mangawhai.
The first meeting will be for the
property group at Tulips, Maungaturoto
on Friday 11th August at 8.30am. Pay
for your own breakfast and coffee and
come join in the conversation. The
first meeting for the general group will
be at Mangawhai at Bennetts at 8.30am
18th August.
For more details and to let her know if
you are attending please contact Beth
Stone
0274937801
or
email beths@remaxrealty.net.nz
More business support initiatives are
also in the pipeline.
Supporting Families - KTown Kids
Club style:
I've been spending some amazing time
recently with setting up and running
KTown Kids Club to
support our children
and families in our
community. I was very lucky that the
Kaiwaka Revival Church has allowed
me to utilise some of their space while
I find a more permanent home for the
programme. We run Monday to Friday
2.30-5.30pm. The children come along
for some fun, food, knowledge and
sharing.
Once the trust status is sorted out for
Kaiwaka Cares the kids club will move
under it's umbrella. It will allow us
access to funding so we will be able to
expand our programme, And hopefully
in the future paying staff to support the
children and any create further
outreach.
Who else is at the Heart?
We have some lovely people who are
coming on board.
First up is Amanda Wilcox will be
doing massage, reflexology, spiritual
healing and readings on Tuesdays and
Wednesdays each week. She is also a
yoga instructor and will be running
classes on Thursday mornings at the
Heart starting on 17 August (see her ad
here in the Bugle). For more details
checkout
her
webpage
www.amandawilcox.co.nz/ or phone
021 02302497.
Also starting this week will be Rachel
Johnson who will be offering her
amazing massage. Call her to book
your place 021 2345074,
Heidi Carter, one of the owners of the
Heart, is also a qualified yoga
instructor. Her wonderful classes will
also be held in the hall at the back of
the Heart starting soon.
So lots going on - come in and see us
and say Hi this week.

and give it a try!
Rugby – JMB
Eastern United JMB celebrated the end
of their season of rugby with their
prizegiving at the Sports Complex last
week. Many thanks to Te Awhina

successful season.
Congratulations to the Under 7s
prizewinners: Most Improved - Evie

Rugby – IMB
Our IMB rugby club and our Junior

Parents' Night Out
Whether it's “date night” or just
“getting away from the kids for a few
hours” - call it whatever you'd like!
Sometimes you just need an evening to
yourselves.
And without the cost or
hassle of finding a babysitter. This is
where we can help:
On Saturday 26
th
August, we will offer
a fun kids night at the Sports Complex
from 6.30 – 9.30pm. This is the night
of the Dunedin Bledisloe Test so if
rugby is your thing, head along to a
mate's place to watch the match – kid
free!
For the children, there'll be games,
activities, a movie and supper. Only $4
per child, children from 5 – 14 years.
This is a fundraiser for the Sports
Association. Please register your child
with me.
Fright Night
Our annual Fright Night is coming up
in October. Last year we had over 600
people at Fright Night – making it one
of Kaiwaka's biggest events of the
year! As part of the evening we
transform our rugby changing rooms
into a 'haunted house' which children
can choose to walk through. We have
an earlier session for the younger
children and then dial up the scare-
factor for a later session for the older
children!
So, I am looking for some ideas to
make that later session really scary. If
you have any suggestions, please get in
touch with me. I'm also looking for
some creative people who are
interested in helping make decorations
for the haunted house. Any help would
be much appreciated.
First Aid Kit Fundraiser
Back by popular demand! After my
First Aid Kit fundraiser closed last
month, I've had lots of people ask me
about them, so I'm going to run it
again.
At $39.95, these first aid kits are
excellent value for money and similar
kits often retail for over $60. This is a
large carry kit with transparent fold-out
compartments which contains 77 items
and follows OSH and Consumer
regulations. An order form is in this
edition of the Bugle. The deadline for
orders is 7
th
September.
Cross Country
Kaiwaka School will hold their Cross
Country at our grounds this Wednesday

From Thelma’s Scrapbook …
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT years
ago, on March 31, 1889, the Parisian landmark
the Eiffel Tower was inaugurated after being
created for the Universal Exhibition of 1889
which marked the centenary of the French
Revolution.
The challenge to “study the possibility of erecting an iron
tower on the Champ-de-Mars" was a competition launched
by the "Journal Officiel”, and the winning entry from
structural engineer and architect Gustave Eiffel, engineers
Maurice Koechlin and Emile Nouguier, and architect
Stephen Sauvestre, beat over a hundred other entries.
Gustave Eiffel was born on December 15, 1852,in Dijon,
and began a career in metallurgy after
obtaining a diploma in chemistry from Ecole Centrale in
1855. After gradually moving into design and engineering
in 1867 Eiffel started his own business after being self-
employed as a consultant engineer for a number of years.
Over the following fifteen years, Eiffel was involved in
building a number of bridges and viaducts, and on January
26, 1887, work on the foundations of the Eiffel Tower
began.
This work on the structure's foundations took over five
months to complete, as excavations were carried out using
spades alone and rubble was removed by horse and cart.
Around fifty engineers and designers produced almost 5,300
drawings to illustrate Eiffel's plans, while a hundred
workers built up over 18,000 different parts of the tower in
a workshop. On site, a further 132 men built the tower from
the pre-assembled pieces.
Although the tower was meant to be dismantled after twenty
years, Eiffel knew it could be useful scientifically as a
station for meteorological and
astronomical observation as
well as enabling experiments in
physics and light and wind
studies.
When the tower was built, the
total cost for the building was
7,799,401.31 gold francs and it
remained the tallest building in
the world until the Chrysler
building in New York topped
its height of 312 metres by just
seven metres. The height of the
tower today is 324 metres after
the addition of television
antennas to the flagpole at the
top.
The total weight of the tower,
which is made of iron, is
10,100 tons. Eiffel chose to use
iron for the tower as it had
greater resistance to wind and
weather than wood or stone,
and the relative lightness of the
metal meant that, at their
deepest, foundations only had to be fifteen metres.
ln order to protect the metal from the weather, the entire
structure is painted every seven years, with around sixty
tons of paint used each time. However, the structure can still
be affected by sun and wind. In sunny weather, heat can
cause the side of the tower facing the sun to expand, while
the shaded side remains unaffected. This causes the tower to
lean up to eighteen centimetres in the opposite direction
from the sun.
The tower is periodically lit up for special occasions such as
Bastille Day and Chinese New Year, and for the countdown
to the year 2000, over 20,000 individual lightbulbs were
installed for a spectacular display.
As a famous landmark, the tower has been featured in a
number of films, including Louis Lumiere’s ”Panorama
Pendant L'ascension De La Tour Eiffel" (1897) which was
the earliest and, possibly most famously, the 1984 James
Bond film "A View To A Kill".
It is one of the most visited and recognised landmarks in
Paris. It is thought that over 200 million people have visited
the attraction since its inauguration.”
