KAIWAKA SCHOOL’S BRILLIANT PERFORMANCE
The students of Kaiwaka School were thrilled to present
the 2018 School Production - Holiday Time - to their
parents, families and Kaiwaka Community.
This told the story of three kids who go on a holiday
around the North Island, stopping off at hot spots along the
way. Each class presented a special tribute to some of the
great parts of our country. Atariki Ashton-Videla, Omanaia
Goodman and Casey Greig learnt a huge script as they took
us on the journey, cared for by a wonderful camp mother
(Willow Woodman) and a great Leabourn's driver (Ian van
Blerk) A special mention needs to go to Lisa van Blerk
who sang a mesmerising solo rendition of Pokarekare Ana.
“The hard work of the teachers in choreographing the
songs and dances was the key to the successful and
polished performances by all the students,” said Rosie
Ellis, Principal, “We all enjoyed this special opportunity to
perform for and acknowledge our community”.

ABOUT TOWN ...
WELL DONE Kaiwaka Primary School for the brilliant
school production last Thursday evening. Not only was the
Hall well filled but the stage was very full too - the school
roll is increasing rapidly! And a special well done to
principal, Rosie Ellis, for her production direction.
Congratulations to our local lads, Rhys Shadbolt, Tyler
Foster and Tamati Abel who made the Northland Un 19
rugby team - they have just played in the Jock Hobbs
Memorial National U19 Tournament in Taupo.
Many folk will remember Joyce Brooks who passed away
last week. Joyce, nee Dunn, grew up on Baldrock Road
(was known as Dunns Road in her time) - see Bugle 15
Joyce is in Row Four of the 1926 Kaiwaka School photo.
A BIG thank you to Wiremu Paikea - the gates have
been hung on the town’s playground fence..
FRIGHT NIGHT - Kaiwaka’s scary moment is coming
up on Saturday 27 October.
DAYLIGHT SAVING begins Sunday 30 September..
New Zealand first introduced daylight saving time in 1927.
The current times have been fixed since 2007.
Volunteers needed - planting and cleaning up of the main
road / river banks - contact Marijke. A big thank you to
Marijke for her planning and work below Eutopia Café - it
will look grand - and smell better too!!
Do you have an old scooter or skate board not being used
anymore? The KSA would
love them for youngsters to
ride the new path- just
leave them in the gazebo.

KAIPARA DOG
TRAINING CLUB
Kaipara Dog Training Club meets
every Wednesday evening from
5.30pm until 7pm at the Mangawhai
Domain on Moir Street and comprises
of a friendly team of individuals who
have fun building a great relationship
with their dogs through play.
The friendly group of dog lovers take
great pleasure in sharing their
knowledge and hold regular classes for
members on a variety of subjects from
the typical competition subjects that
you would expect from a dog club like
agility, obedience (including Rally-O)
and Flygility to more everyday
subjects like Pet Dog Manners for
puppies and older dogs and Canine
Good Citizen from Basic to Gold
levels.
The programme for Term 3 has been
quite varied and has included a 6-week
Taster course which has enabled
handlers and dogs from previous Pet
Dog Manners courses to sample the
delights of agility and obedience in a
fun,
relaxed
and
supportive
environment. There has also been a
more advanced class to hone the agility
and flygility competition skills of more
experienced members. In addition to
these courses run by members for
members, there has also been the
opportunity to attend workshops on the
new and growing sport of Nosework
and to learn Canine Massage
techniques.
Training Tip: Asking your dog to
come back to you is a command called
“Recall”. If your dog comes back to
you immediately on command, it is
said to have good recall. Don’t use
your dog’s name as a recall command
as their name is frequently used in
conversation for different purposes.
Their name can be used to attract
attention, but the command to return
should be a distinct word or sound (or
even visual cue) for example “Pup!
Pup! Pup!” called in an exciting
manner. Always have a party and
praise your dog for coming back to you
even if it has taken a while! After all,
would you come back knowing that
you are going to be scalded for taking
your time?

The Things I Get
Do you get everything you
want?
You don’t? Well I’ll declare,
That’s strange, I have the same
complaint.
Perhaps it’s not so rare.
The things we don’t want, come to us
In bunches every day:
But when we really like a thing
It seems to stay away!
We hope and wish and pray and cry
And scheme and work and plan,
While our desires remain beyond
The reach of mortal man.
So, after years of fruitless hopes
I think I’ll cease to fret
And when I don’t get things I like –
I’ll like the things I get!!

MRS
JOYCE
BROOKS: Our
landlady, a Maungaturoto identity
whose name belongs in so many areas
of the town’s history – passed away on
Tuesday 9 September 2018.
Mr and Mrs Brooks and their family
have contributed hugely to the success
of Maungaturoto for over 40 years. We
pay tribute to this very special lady
who has gone to rest in peace after a
long illness. Our sincere sympathy
goes to her devoted family in their
grief. OCS is so fortunate to be the
tenants of Mrs Brooks and we are
grateful for the patience and kindness
shown us over the years.
SPRING has arrived, and with it
comes the warmer temperatures and
the increasing presence of sunshine.
SO! now is the perfect time to get
outside and get some of that goodness
into you, such as vitamin D and
melatonin – all good for our mental
and physical health. If you can, get
outside, go for a walk in the sunshine –
it just feels so good. Sun-screen is
important too so be wise about how
long you are exposed to those rays.
VISITS to the Community House are
welcome; if you have something
troubling you and need to speak to a
counsellor, or if you just feel like
having a chat and a cup of coffee.
There is no charge for any of our
services, and as well as counsellors,
both male and female, we have male
and female financial mentors to help
you manage your money. We have
someone who can visit those who may
be experiencing difficulties with just
being a parent, and someone who is
dedicated to the well-being of seniors,
whether it’s in the form of a chat on the
phone or a visit in their home.

‘Zone C’ Barry Read
Opens 6pm Friday 14 September
until 26 September 2018
Barry’s first solo exhibition in
Mangawhai
Artists
Gallery
concentrates on two elements -
drawing and painting.
Barry has exhibited throughout New
Zealand and when living in London he
exhibited in the UK, Barcelona and St
Petersburg. He says, “the major
influence for me, and my greatest
stroke of luck, was going to the BBC,
there I met some great draughtsmen
and
draughtswomen,
fantastic,
beautiful, stunning, unbelievable work.
So I learned to draw in a way I’d never
drawn before. I got less precious I
guess!”
Barry looks forward to the exhibition
because “the space and lighting is so
good. To have the works shown
together should be interesting.”
‘Chopping & Changing’
Mark Graham; Andy Griffiths
Opens 6pm Thursday
27 September
Andy Griffiths has been a professional
artist since 1990. He has worked for
large corporate clients like Warner
Bros Consumer Products and small
independent publishers. Andy says,
"I've worked mainly as a digital artist
for the last 10 years but In 2017, I blew
the dust off my 30 year old set of
Watercolour paints and made the
decision to start “real” painting again.
"Chopping and Changing" is my first
ever exhibition. It's a joint exhibition
with acrylic painter and printmaker
Mark Graham at the Mangawhai Artist
Gallery-anyone is welcome to come
along and have a drink and a chat.
I find watercolour painting to be the
antithesis of digital painting. It is
spontaneous and unpredictable. I'm
inspired by the landscapes and
seascapes of the Kaipara region and
I'm really excited about this new phase
of my artistic career.”

GET KIWIS GROWING
SPUDS
#GreatPotatoBag
National food education charity Garden
to Table has launched a new initiative
encouraging Kiwis to get off the couch
and into the garden to grow their own
fresh potatoes in time for summer.
In partnership with Tui Garden
Products, the Great Potato Bag
Fundraiser aims to teach Kiwi children
and their families how to grow,
harvest, prepare and share their
homegrown spuds.
Linda Taylor,
Executive
Officer
at
Garden to Table
Trust
says,
“Roasted,
boiled, mashed
or fried, the humble potato is a staple
on many dinner tables. But no matter
how it’s served, it will always taste
better when dug out of the garden”.
An easy crop to grow, the spud takes
just two to three months to turn from
seed to tasty tuber. This means it is
time to get planting in order to harvest
a bumper crop of potatoes in time for
summer.
Garden to Table ambassadors, famed
celebrity chef Al Brown, nutritionist
Niki Bezzant and landscape designer
and gardening expert Dan MacKay, are
all on board with the initiative.
Al has created a delicious potato recipe
showing you how to take your spuds
from garden to table, impressing guests
to the table this sunny season. This
recipe will be included in the Great
Potato Bag Kit, which includes
everything you need to grow your own
crop including a brightly-coloured
potato planter bag, 1.5kg pack of seed
potatoes from Tui Garden Products and
‘how to’ growing guide for just $20.
Proceeds from the kits go to support
the work of the Garden to Table Trust,
which provides a curriculum-integrated
food education programme to New
Zealand primary and intermediate
schools across the country.
The kits are available online to
purchase at gardentotable.org.nz.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
New library cards
We have brand-new pre-printed library
cards, thanks to Dargaville Public
Library. Feel free to come in with your
old card* and swap it for a new one.
They come with a snap-off key tag,
which you can put on your keyring and
use instead of fishing through your
wallet for your card. There is no charge
for upgrading to one of these new
cards from an old white laminated one,
even if you can't find that card.
*If you've not used your library card
for a couple of years or so, you may
need to register as a new member.
Contact me if you're not sure, and I
will check for you.
If you've been using one of our online
services that requires your library card
details, you'll need to sign in again
after your card has been upgraded,
with your new number.
Joining the library
To sign up to our library, go to https://
ent.kotui.org.nz/client/en_AU/
kaipara/ and click on the link down the
left-hand side to Join the Library. If
you don't have access to an online
computer, come in and we can sign
you up on ours - or use our free wi-fi to
sign up on your smartphone or tablet.
You'll need to bring in two forms of
identification before we can give you
your new library card: (1) personal
identification that has your name and
signature, e.g. a driver's licence,
passport or Community Services card,
and (2) proof of address less than three
months old, e.g. an account or invoice,
a bank statement, a letter from a
government agency, or a tenancy
agreement; you can show this to us on
your phone's screen if you don't have a
paper copy.
If you don't have anything with your
address on it, don't let that stop you -
we can arrange to have a postcard
posted to your address which you then
bring in to us, proving the mail will
reach you. If you're signing up at
home, you can contact me to let me
know you need this, to save you an
extra trip into town, as both IDs need
to be presented at the same time.
Library membership is free to residents
and ratepayers of the Kaipara District.
New e-book service
Along with Overdrive/Libby and
BorrowBox,
we
now
also
have ePlatform from Wheelers for
borrowing e-books and audio books.
This service is free. Like the other
services, you need to download their
app to your phone or tablet (look for
their blue logo shown here), and then
sign in using your library
number and PIN. If you
need help getting started,
we have bookmarks on the
library counter, or contact
me.
Book swap
The next book swap is coming up in
early October. This is for the Large
Print (yellow spine label) and Audio
books, and these titles need to come
back to the library before the swap,
please. These are the books that have a
bar code that has NLN INC above the
bars, and the number itself starts with
an N.
Book review
Anne has been reading Where
Underpants Come From by Joe
Bennett. She said
"The title could
have put me off
but as I knew that
Joe Bennett is a
funny,
funny
New
Zealand
writer
and
extensively
published I had to
give this book a
try. It was written
a good ten years
ago but since
then China has featured very strongly
in our economies so was still relevant
to today. Joe takes a very straight on
approach to his investigation to where
his certainly cheap undies came from.
His observations of Chinese life,
business and its people are both
thorough and at times touching. He has
a few adventures and a great time
getting to know the country. He really
does find the source of his celebrated
undies and makes some startling
discoveries about them. This book kept
me entertained on every page. I read it
right through. Readers will have more
than a few laughs and maybe learn a
few things about China unknown to
them." This book is on the Dargaville
Non-Fiction shelves in the library until
early December (915 BEN).

Tree Trimming
It was 1886 when I was built – things
were very different then. My timber
was hand-sawn, my nails hand-forged,
individually, by a blacksmith. I've
never been a big or fancy building, but
I was built with care and pride
nevertheless.
My
first
job
description
was
“Mangawhai Beach School” and, as
soon as I was completed, I was filled
with children – little girls, mostly quiet
and shy, in starched pinafores and
young ragamuffin boys with their
socks falling down and their pockets
full of glass marbles and other
treasures. Heavy wooden desks were
dragged in and a blackboard set up on
an easel. My walls were filled with the
sounds of scuffling feet, rustling paper,
squeaky chalk, scratchy slate pencils
and the teacher's voice – firm but not
unkind. Then the happy, excited cries
of children released through the
doorway to play outside.
The years passed, the number of
children grew, an extra teacher was
called in and a partition built to provide
two classrooms. The clothing of both
teachers and pupils changed in style
and,
eventually,
became
more
colourful. Now and then I got a new
coat of paint too. Beyond my walls
more houses appeared, and horse-
drawn carts were replaced with noisy
machines. I was getting old and the
number of children crowding through
my doors daily was becoming a bit
much for me. By 1956 they decided to
build a new school in a new place.
Then one day they emptied me out and
locked the door. At first, I enjoyed the
peace and tranquillity of being alone –
but then I realized I had been
abandoned – nobody needed me
anymore! The paint peeled from my
neglected walls, unkempt grass and
weeds tangled tall around me. What
was worse – some young hooligans
decided to use me for target practice!
Soon every one of my windows had
been smashed by air-rifle pellets! The
perpetrators may well have been some
of the very same boys who had once
studied within my walls and been
sheltered from stormy weather under
my sturdy roof. They didn't care.
Nobody cared.
Oh, but somebody did care! Somebody
had a bright idea – they came to give
me new life. They removed the
partition and used it to build a
'sanctuary'. They cleaned me and
painted me and gave me new windows.
They punched down the old nails in my
wooden floor and sanded and oiled and
polished it.
Instead of school desks they brought in
new wooden seats made of Japanese
oak and a lectern in place of a chalk-
board. Then they brought in an altar
and placed a clean cloth on it and a
shiny brass cross and vases of fresh
flowers. I felt loved again! I had a new
birth and a new name – they called me
“The Chapel of Christ the King”.
They brought in an organ and filled me
with music. People came through my
doors again – people of all ages – to
sing and to talk, to listen and to pray.
Babies in white gowns were christened
at my font and brides in white gowns
were married at my altar. I saw joy and
sadness. I heard laughter and tears.
It was all good for another fifty years
and then, once again, I became too
small for people's needs.
Once again, they decided to replace
me. Once again, they emptied me out
and closed the door.
But I'm still here – I'm still
available. You can use me again if
you want to.
I'm still here...
I'm still strong...
I'm a survivor!
(P.S. This building, pictured below, is
now used as a meeting place for the
Mangawhai Writers Group.)
