KAIWAKA
WEATHER
Well Wayne how was that, ask and ye
shall be given, have you had enough
rain for now?
As I write up this report it is all but 2
and a half weeks to Christmas Day.
Over November we had a lot of wind,
partly cloudy and rain and those very
annoying showers.
We recorded for November 2018
86mm rain and for 2017 we recorded
60mm. For November 2018 we had
rain on 11 days and for 2017 rain on 8
days. Our total for the first 11 months
of 2018 we recorded 1637mm and for
2017 1658mm.
Our driest November since 1987 was
1994 with 20mm and our wettest
was1999 with 340mm. Our driest first
11 months of any year since 1987 was
1994 with 888mm, and our wettest 11
months was 1990 with 1938mm.
I have not heard the predictions for
Christmas Day weather-wise yet. One
thing is for sure though it all depends
where you live. It would be great for
the summer holidays and swarming
visitors to our northerly regions to have
a good 3 weeks weather at least.
Please, please remember to take care
on those roads. We have had enough
sadness around our district over the last
few months. Remember our roads are
two-way carriages and they must be
driven accordingly. Go out have fun
and be kind to each other.
Q. What is a sheep's favourite
Christmas song? A. Fleece Navidad.

Of all the Christmas parties ever held,
this one would have to have been the
most unusual.
Christmas Eve 1914 saw World War I
in progress in France. Tens of
thousands were being killed and
wounded week by week in the muddy
nightmare. It was now Christmas.
As the night drew on, the men thought
wistfully of families and friends
celebrating at home. The whole idea of
Christmas made this war seem so
terribly evil.
Then suddenly, at 10.30 pm, the
German artillery stopped firing.
What were the Germans up to now,
they wondered? Then the allied guns in
the rear became abruptly quiet.
The men in the trenches waited
anxiously in the strange silence that
settled over the Front.
Then the incredible news came
through. The German High Command
had asked for a truce for Christmas.
At ten minutes before l2 midnight,
military bugles sounded the ceasefire ...
the truce was official.
From both sides flares lit the jet-black
sky. As the allied soldiers watched,
they saw grey clad Germans clamber
out of their trenches without weapons
of any kind.
Then the sound of a familiar carol
started wafting across the front ...
‘Silent Night, Holy Night’.
In a kind of stunned awe, the Allied
soldiers came out of their trenches too,
and eventually started joining in, in
English.
Engineers from both sides started
attacking the barbed wire ... and
moments later men from both sides
poured through the gaping holes and
reached out their hands to greet each
other like long-lost mates.
Whenever possible, interpreters helped
out, but in some strange way language
didn’t seem to matter.
Happily, they showed each other
photographs of loved ones at home.
Allies produced cans of jam and cans
of beef, while the Germans, long
sausages.
Chaplains of both sides arranged
services and Germans and Allied
soldiers
celebrated
communion
together.
After it was over, they joined hands
and sang ‘Blest be the tie that binds’.
The warm comradeship continued long
after the day broke and through into the
early morning. Just before noon it
started to snow, and they all headed
back to their trenches for cover. Only
too soon it was over.
The Allied artillery moved into action
again and once more the awful killing
was under way. The truce hadn’t lasted
long - just 12 quiet hours in four years
of violent bloodshed.
This amazing event wonderfully
pictured what Christmas is all about.
Christmas comes at the time of the
year when our lives are tired and
tattered rather than quiet and
peaceful. The birth of Jesus was all
about bringing peace to a world that
knows very little about peace - peace
in the home, community and yes,
even in our own lives.
When
we exchange
gifts this
Christmas, we are acknowledging the
greatest gift of all in the person of
God’s Son Jesus Christ. Obviously, it
goes without saying that Christmas has
much more meaning when you have a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ
.

ARMISTICE DAY - 11 November 2018
REMEMBRANCE CROSSES
Below are pictured six of the crosses remembering those from the Kaiwaka
community who died while serving in World War I. Pam and Mark Ottaway
searched the rows and rows of the 18,000 crosses at the Auckland War Museum.
They said it was very difficult as the crosses were not in alphabetical order and
many names were the same or similar - one needed to know the soldier’s serial
number. The fifteen Kaiwaka soldiers who died are recorded on the Kaiwaka War
Memorial Hall Honours Board and on the front doors.

What a fantastic response from our
amazing community, not only the
dedicated team members of MMCT,
but more importantly the support and
generosity of the whole Otamatea
district.
On Thursday 29th November by 5 am
the vehicles started to arrive at the St
John station to set up for the mornings
fundraising
of
breakfast
and
entertainment. By 6 am the Rapid
Relief Trailer’s team lead by Richard
Wearmouth, was ready for action. The
first order of thirty breakfasts was
quickly ready by the amazing skills of
the team and ready to be delivered by
the Paparoa Lions, from then on, the
crew worked like a well-practiced team
until the last order was delivered at
10.00am.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen, another
team led by Pam Chapman was
efficiently providing the plated sit-
down breakfast. Between these two
teams over 600 meals were provided to
the well-supported fundraiser. The
committee
of
MMTC
was
overwhelmed by not only those who
bought the breakfasts but the amazing
spirit by those who gave time and
produce, including:
Richard Wearmouth and the Rapid
Relief Team, the kitchen cookers,
Paparoa Lions, mail delivery people,
our
local
business
including
Maungaturoto Butchery, Maungaturoto
Four Square, Hellabys, Good Farm
Gorge Road and the Smeatons, Carters,
Mitre 10, Otherwise Fine (music),St
John, The Den, Kong the donkey and
his owner Karen Stratford (Kong made

provided a lot of fun and laughs), all
the volunteers. And backing us all the
way have been the local media, The
Lifestyler, Mangawhai Focus, Maungi
Matters, Kaiwaka Bugle, Paparoa
Press, More FM for having John
Markby a great friend to Maungaturoto
community who broadcasted from site
for the whole morning. It is so great
these organisations are getting the word
out to our greater community.
Over $16,000.00 was raised on the day,
the sale of breakfasts over $6,000.00
and the balance from donations, with
pledges of over a $1,000.00 still to
come.
Amazing result and again thank you to
all for making this such a magnificent
morning, the writer apologies to
anyone missed out!!!
Other events we will be the Maungi
Christmas markets, where again the
Rapid Relief Team will be cooking up
a storm, with proceeds going to the
project, and look out for our float at the
Christmas parade. ~ Raewyn

KAIPARA DOG
TRAINING CLUB
Kaipara Dog Training Club’s Term 4
is coming to a close. The handlers and
dogs who have attended the Pet Dog
Manners course will be concluding
their training with an assessment for
the Canine Good Citizens Basic award.
Agility courses were also held during
the term. These covered various levels
of ability, from beginner through to
coaching for the more advanced
members.
So far, this season competing Club
members have attended events at
Akarana,
Manukau,
Whangarei,
Norwest, North Shore and Hibiscus
Coast. On December 1st, the Club
hosted its annual Ribbon Day, an
informal competition day which
provides
valuable
competition
experience
in
a
low-pressure
environment for all Club members.
Being a small club, we were assisted
by members of the Whangarei Dog
Club with whom we have a reciprocal
arrangement to support each other’s
events.
The help is truly appreciated as there is
always a lot of equipment to be moved
at the start and end of the day and
between competitions. Despite a
forecast predicting heavy rain and
strong winds, the event went ahead and
fortunately the weather turned out to
be reasonable for the day.
Term 4 will finish with a prize giving
but the Club will almost immediately
dive into 2019 with gusto, presenting
its regular showcase demonstrations at
the Mangawhai Domain Gala Day on
January 2nd.
Doggie Day Out
A few days later, on January 5th, the
Club will host a Doggie Day Out.
This family friendly event has free
admission to the grounds where you
can register to enter competitions:
Doggie Dress Up, Doggie Tricks and
Musical Sit, and games for the children
and
dogs.
There
will
be
demonstrations, refreshments and stalls
with dog related merchandise and
services. A great day out for all the
family, but we respectfully ask in the
interests of safety that children under
13 be accompanied by a parent or
guardian and all dogs be kept on a lead
and under control at all times. Visit our
Facebook Page (Kaipara Dog Training
Club) for the latest updates.
Hope to see you there!

Representation review
In October I wrote about Council’s rep-
resentation review – this is the process
by which the wards and number of
Councillors’ are decided. Following
submissions and hearings Council de-
cided to proceed with its initial proposal
as its final proposal to cut Kaiwaka and
Mangawhai off as a separate ward, and
have four wards, each with two Council-
lors. I opposed this approach for three
primary reasons.
The first reason was that I believe this
will marginalise the Kaiwaka/ Man-
gawhai area with only two Councillors
out of the eight in the district. At present
there are three Councillors (representing
the Otamatea ward, which includes Kai-
waka and Mangawhai), and the popula-
tion growth has been such that four
Councillors are justified.
My second reason is that it divides the
community of interest linkages between
Kaiwaka and Maungaturoto including
the Kaiwaka Primary School
link with Otamatea High
School. This is one of the key
considerations that is sup-
posed to be taken in to account in these
decisions.
The third reason is that the fourward
proposal operates right at the margin of
the allowable number of residents per
councillor for the new Kaiwaka/ Man-
gawhai ward. The allowable variance is
+/- 10% and using the old population
figures it is already at +9.55%. This
means that the boundary would need to
keep being adjusted, moving incremen-
tally from the Brynderwyn corner to-
wards Maungaturoto at each review as
the Eastern population continues to
grow.
To cut a long story short, four appeals
against this decision were lodged by the
closing date, and the matter will now be
investigated and decided by the Local
Government Commission, which will
release its decision by 11 April 2019.
The new ward structure will be used at
the next local body election.
When will that dreaded water tank
rule be gone?
Many of you will have heard of, or been
affected by, the district plan rule requir-
ing every new house to have extra water
tanks dedicated for firefighting. After a
battle running over several years, in-
cluding an appeal of the decision by
FENZ, agreement has finally been
reached to remove this requirement from
the rules. The agreement has now been
signed off by the Environment Court
and no appeals of that decision were
received by the deadline.
This means that the new rules (not re-
quiring dedicated water tanks) will be-
come operative as of 18 December
2018. Council is working through the
issues around how to deal with historical
consents that required dedicated tanks
and will communicate the process
around this in the New Year. I will con-
tinue to lobby for further hassles and
costs to ratepayers to be minimised in
fixing up the past consent requirements.
Pukenui Road culvert
I have been chasing up the issue of the
blocked Pukenui Road culvert which
results in road metal washing across
Oneriri Road when it rains. According
to the response received, Council has
tried to fix this issue six times in the past
two years without success. It is appar-
ently a complex issue as “there are other
structures involved and upstream pres-
sures adding increased stress on the as-
set performance”. Council applied to
NZTA for funding for a permanent fix
which would see a new culvert installed
running diagonally across Oneriri Road,
but this funding was declined. The road-
ing team are now going to review the
priority of this issue, so hopefully we
will see this re-prioritised in the New
Year and fixed as soon as possible.

Farewell Gymnastics Otamatea
Last week, our Gymnastics Otamatea
club held their very last day. The
gymnasts showed off their skills to the
crowd, then were presented with their
badges and certificates.
A huge thank you to Stephanie Brown
who has run this large club for 13
years!
Stephanie, aided by her family, has run
Gymnastics Otamatea in a very
professional and capable way, and she
has given so many children in our
district the opportunity to develop their
gymnastics skills. Stephanie was
presented with gifts from the coaches,
the KSA and the parents. Thank you,
Stephanie!
Illuminate is nearly here!
Our biggest event ever is now just
around the corner! Over 1,200
Venturers will be camping at our
Sports Complex over New Years and
into January. The organisation of this
massive event is ramping up, with the
Scouting planning team of 30 coming
up to Kaiwaka most weekends.
Can you help? We are wanting any
donated sofas and lounge chairs, and
are happy to collect these if needed.
Another reminder: the entire Sports
Complex + the school grounds will be
accessible to Illuminate participants
ONLY from 31st December until 11th
January.

Save-a-Life
keyring - If you have one of these
keyrings, you could save a life!
The Save-a-Life keyring has a capsule
which contains a soluble aspirin.
Chewed or placed under the tongue, an
aspirin can make all the difference
when someone is experiencing signs of
a heart attack. The aspirin potentially
helps keep a patient alive for what
paramedic’s call “The Golden Hour”.
This is the time between when the
attack begins, paramedics arriving on
the scene and the time it takes to
transport the patient to hospital.
The keyrings are $15 for a 3-pack - a
small price to pay for potentially
saving somebody’s life. Buy one for
someone you love. A great stocking
stuffer for Xmas. Contact me on
cherylanderson051@gmail.com and I
can drop them off to you.

Kaiwaka Can has now been going
more than four years. I haven’t counted
up how many articles have appeared in
The Bugle, but I still meet locals who
don’t know we exist. It is worth asking
then whether our existence makes any
difference in our small township.
As I drive round Kaiwaka, I look for
things we have been involved in, things
we have achieved, things we want to
achieve and things we still dream of
doing. The first thing I notice of course
is the change in speed signs from a few
years ago, 60 right through now instead
of 50 and 70. Not the exact result we
wanted but it was a long hard battle to
get even this far. The signs telling the
speed you are doing are working well
and they do make a difference for
many motorists. There is a speed
camera on the highway south, not
where we wanted it by any means but
at least it is there. And a pedestrian
safety zone by St John’s Op Shop. We
would love to see some safety barriers
round the safety zone to make it truly
safe but maybe another day. Same with
a safety barrier for pedestrians on the
northern bridge (which we can now
walk under).
A few footpaths have been redone or
improved but we are working on more
of those. The playground fence is a
bright reminder that good things can
happen. The surround to the sewerage
works near Eutopia is done and looks
great. The path down to the river by it
is well done and the picnic table most
welcome. We have greater plans
though than that for this area and look
forward to real progress for Kaiwaka
Central next year.
Roads, well, still with their share of
potholes, slips and problems with very
little money in the Council kitty for
Kaiwaka just yet. Sadly, as we look
back four years, these roads have
claimed the lives of two of our
members since we began. We just hope
none are hurt on Oneriri Road corner
where still it is a lottery to pick your
way through.
Lights are slowly starting to emerge
once more, far more slowly than we
hoped, more technically challenging
and a bit more expensive perhaps than
we would like but
a great team is
working on these.
The Fire Station
ladder of fire is up and working, the
Cross is lit up on the Anglican Church
and a lit-up nativity scene is up for
Christmas. There will be quite a few
properties with fairy lights for the
season as well as Mark Ottaway’s
brilliant annual display.
Eutopia is getting more lights all the
time. Several businesses are seriously
thinking about their light display and if
they really want them for Christmas, it
may still be possible. It is a big project
and rather like starting a fully laden
logging truck up a steep hill.
A great bunch of people up Settlement
Road area (they haven’t joined us yet)
have worked hard to get the bus shelter
installed and the park upgraded. Oh yes
there are more trees along the highway,
slowly gaining height as summer gets
under way.
Lots of other things have happened of
course but we continue to dream of
better things yet. MacClean Park has
huge potential. Kaiwaka Central will
make a real difference to how our town
looks. The welcome sculptures will be
eye catching once we work through the
32 regulations imposed by NZTA. And
there are loads of other projects too,
but they will have to wait till the new
year.
What would we like for Kaiwaka Can?
Your support, your skills and interests,
your involvement as we clean the place
up, light it up, brighten it up and make
it somewhere people want to come and
visit.
Look forward to seeing you in 2019.

When I first took over the farm in
1976 it came with a rusty and
dilapidated tractor. At first there was
little use for it other than pulling the
odd car out of the mud in winter. Later
getting the loan of a mower and fitting
it to the lift and rear drive we slashed
several pathways through a gorse
paddock which produced an incredible
motor-cross bike track for the local
teenagers. In the early days we had no
harrows so we used the old girl to tow
a double wire bed frame around the
animal paddocks to re level the ground
after winter mush had deformed it.
The David Brown family began under
his name (1904-1993) Harry Ferguson
joined in 1936 to become the biggest
British tractor manufacturer post war.
Brown and Ferguson argued over
design, so secretly Brown built the
VAK1 and launched it in 1939 going
on to build seven thousand seven
hundred units. Ferguson split away and
joined up on a handshake with Henry
Ford, this allowed his three point
linkage to be used on the Fordson N
Tractors. Ferguson tractors, during the
fifties, were powered by engines from
the Vanguard car company.
Our property was mostly hillside, the
top paddock being no problem in
summer but if winter came about too
soon, the tractor had to be brought
down before the ground became too
slippery. The DB had no roll bar and in
low gear backward it was relatively
safe, coming downhill except when the
engine began to lift off which of course
lost steering as well.
One year I left it too long - so I put a
fruit can over the exhaust stack,
disconnected the battery and left it
where it was. In summer the ground
dried, so I drove my Bedford van up to
the tractor. The fruit can had gone, so I
removed all the plugs took the battery
from my van and turned the engine
over. Water literally pumped from the
motor. Moments later I took a tube and
put gas into the cylinders, put the
plugs back and got it to kick over -
then hand feeding the carburettor
with the tube from a tin she ran
well. Reconnecting everything
away we went off down the hill -
what a tractor.
Sometime later I found that that
tractor was the same one that was
used for several years to grade the
speedway track at Western
Springs. It was originally owned
by the aptly named man, a Mister
Harley Arthur, who was President
of Speedway years before.

FAST FIVE NETBALL MODULE
Over one hundred people participated in the Kaiwaka Sports Association’s Fast
Five Netball Module, held over eight weeks on Sunday afternoons in the KSA
gymnasium. With only five players on court in each team, Fast Five games are
very quick and intense, and players very soon work up a sweat!
The finals were hotly contested with The Mysfits taking on The Metes. The
Metes came away with the win 24 - 17 and took home the winner’s purse of
$300 with The Mysfits taking away the second-place prize of $200. The third
prize of $100 went to The Pirates. After the finals, players moved into the
pavilion for prizegiving, congratulations to the prize winners: Youngest player –
Harlia Harris; Oldest player – Adrian Buxton.
Team managers nominated someone from their team to receive a special prize:
* High Fives – Rubin Paikea, for having a beaming smile all the time
* The Pirates – Tyler Buis, for all the hickies he displayed
* Kaipara Crusades – Harlia Harris, for being a very talented great all-rounder
* The Mysfits – Phil Jones, for being the most dedicated and committed player
* The Metes – Jayme Curtis, for her fabulous 2 and 3 pointers
* Kaipara Kingis – Tawhetu Phillips, for being the most keen and dedicated
player
* Drama Llamas - Anahera Worsfold, for being the shortest in the team but
having bags of confidence
* KC – Daniel Van Coller,
for
being
the
most
enthusiastic, energetic and
passionate player
