20th July for 25 years’ service with Fire & Emergency NZ (FENZ).
Adrian Buxton has serviced in his local communities and volunteered at several
FENZ Brigades around the country during his 25 years’ service and brings great

families for joining in our celebrations, with special mention of Pat Buxton and
family, Brad Mosby (Area Commander Whangarei – Kaipara Fire Area/FENZ),

Thank you to those of you who have responded to
my request for help for this. It is not too late to offer
your help. Please note the date is a week earlier than
given last month as the second week of the school
holidays coincides with our Area Committee
conference (which we like to attend.)
Please note, even two or three hours would be great.
We have a particular need for many hands when
setting up on the Sunday afternoon and packing up
on the Friday afternoon.
We are also seeking donations for our multi

Purchasing a car and providing driving lessons for
people who have their Learner’s licence and are
aiming for their Restricted has been a great success
(approx 80% of learners have passed their licence on
the first attempt – the norm is 20%.)
However, because this is so popular, we now need
more Driver Mentors. The requirements are not huge
and the number of clients each Mentor has is a matter
of personal choice (as is the time that they make
available.) Training is given. If you believe you can
help in any way, please get in touch with Eileen –

65TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
Doug and Norma, nee Clendon, Leslie were married on 26th June 1954.
They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year, with most of their
immediate family, by going to Clendon House, Rawene, which is Norma's
ancestors family home.
They have 4 children, 8 grand kids and 9 great grand kids – with only 1 grand
child not making it on the day. Also the wives, partners and 2 cousins attended.
The day was spent by catching up, remembering previous times and getting a
refresher on the family heritage. A great day was had by all.

As one Rotary year ends, we have a
change in leadership at both local and
District level. We look forward to
another year in which we can continue
to support the community using the
resources we have available.
Paul Harris Fellow Awards
On Tuesday, 9 July we hosted our new
District Governor, Ian, who comes
from Norfolk Island. A special
highlight of the night was the
presentation of Paul Harris Fellow
awards to Stella Clyde, a Rotarian and
Terri Donaldson - pictured below. Both
these people have made a huge
contribution to our community through
the years. A PHF sapphire was also
presented to Ken Littlejohn, a past
member of the club for his ongoing
support of the Rotary Foundation.
Congratulations to the three of you and
thank you for what you do. During the
next six months Ian and his wife will
visit all of the 40+ clubs in our District.
These visits enable the District
Governor to find out what is happening
in each club and offer support where he
can. It is always good to have an
awards night happening at the same
time.
Community Connexions
The Community Connexions afternoon
was well attended, but mainly by
presenters. There will be a
follow-up to this event and
all present were asked to
bring two new people along
so that we can look at the
best
way
of
forging
connexions
in
the
community.
Gail
Fotheringham
(KDC),
facilitated the afternoon very
well making sure that we
didn’t exceed the two hours
allocated. It was obvious
from the presentations that
many local groups need some
volunteer support, so if you
have time to give a local group,
just talk to someone in that group to
find out more about it. Many who have
lived here for a number of years do not
always know what is available and by
building up a database, new arrivals
will also be given information that will
be invaluable to them. Being involved
not only supports a group but it is a
great way to meet new people.
Fifty Years
On 24 August we are holding a
luncheon to celebrate 50 years from the
time the Club was chartered. We are
hopeful of having several of the
Charter members along. If you know of
anyone who may be interested, please
give Eileen a call on 0211420357. We
don’t want people missing out because
they did not know about it. We will
have a very good speaker and an
awesome meal.
Calf Litter
A reminder, we still have plenty of
bags of calf litter for sale at
Maungaturoto Four Square.
As Rotarians, we enjoy many
interesting guest speakers, working
bees and times of fellowship. If you are
interested in joining us, please get in
touch with any Rotarian.

The Kaiwaka Can meeting last
Wednesday was full of interest for
those present (and it was a good
number too including councillors from
KDC and NRC). We had a long agenda
of the usual items, all the things we
want to do but haven’t quite achieved
yet. But our time went on two items of
real interest for us.
Solar Power
Eric Janseunne whose work is in solar
power supply, presented to us a vision
of what could be for Kaiwaka. He is
committed as his contribution to
community, to explore ways of setting
up solar power supply for Kaiwaka that
benefits in particular those for whom a
large power bill is a constant challenge.
His vision is for a number of solar
power units on north facing chunks of
land, that feed into the national grid
and the value generated by that input
be returned to shareholders in the
scheme by way of reduced power
charges. He has done extensive studies
on schemes like this around the world
and believes Kaiwaka would be a great
place for a trial in New Zealand. Rick
Stolwerk our local NRC councillor was
quick to note the possibilities of this
throughout Northland.
We will work with Eric by linking him
with people with expertise in this area
and then as Kaiwaka Can, looking for
the ways in which we can help advance
such a scheme. Early days but a highly
stimulating and exciting presentation.
Footbridge - a means to go from one
end of town to the other without
crossing SH1
Our other Rik (Rik Schijf) brought a
proposal regarding the footbridge we
have been asking for as part of the
Kaiwaka Central scheme. He is keen
for us to go out to the community to
gain support signatures as we look for
ways to get this bridge in place.
The bridge is designed to go across the
Kaiwaka River just to the west of the
southern bridge on State Highway One.
It would allow people from the west
side of Kaiwaka (everything from
Kaiwaka Clothing to Shamrock Service
Station) to get across the river without
having to cross SH 1. Longer term we
are planning to see parking on Oneriri
Road (where there is informal parking
now) which would also help people
coming into the centre of Kaiwaka.
Once across the footbridge, people
could either continue up the west side
(Eutopia, Cheese Shop and the factory
complexes) or walk under the bridge
and come up by Mormors and the other
shops there and on to the library, hall,
Four Square and the school.
Green Space
We do also plan to tidy up and extend
the useable green space each side of the
river on the north, tidy up under the
bridge and install disabled access as
well. But the footbridge would be a
great first step. Rik and a team of
helpers will be putting together a
petition for Council to get some
movement on this. The footbridge is in
the Township Improvement Plan but
has no date or budget alongside it.
A good set of discussions for one
meeting and we look forward to
progress on both of these.
Don’t forget, Kaiwaka Can is open to
everyone at any time as we look to
make Kaiwaka the best place it can be.
Meetings third Wednesday each
month, 5.30pm, Archie Bull Hall.

THURSDAY BUS TO WHANGAREI
KAIWAKA CAN: Talking power
and talking footbridge...
A new weekly public transport service
covering the area from Kaiwaka to
Ruakaka is to begin a 12-month trial
from 1st August. ‘Bream Bay Link’
will be operated by locally based
Leabourn’s Passenger Services.
Regional Council Transport Strategic
Planning Officer Sharlene Selkirk says
the success of the trial will very much
depend on the public support it enjoys.
"Unfortunately,
SuperGold
card
holders will not be able to travel for
free at this point as we need to get an
idea of passenger numbers/demand so
we can seek formal approval from
NZTA for the SuperGold service to be
included."
She says supporting information
about
the
service
(including
timetables and associated posters)
can be seen at www.buslink.co.nz

ERIC OFFERS FREE
HOME HOT WATER
ENERGY AUDIT.
A positive first step to reduce your
energy bill and create more comfort.
Energy and water are the 2 most
important resources we all need daily.
Increasing energy prices and harsher
climate conditions are growing issues.
More than 80 % of buildings in NZ use
electricity for expensive hot water
heating.
EWATEC Ltd. offers a free home hot
water energy audit or a free visit to
evaluate an existing solar hot water
system or a DIY home energy audit
(questionnaire).
The hot water energy audit involves 2
parts: a walk-through home assessment
and
a
report
with
specific
recommendations.
The recommendations will highlight
which actions are needed to make your
hot water system more efficient and
comfortable, as well as a future advice
on feasibility to add a renewable
energy system to your home.
Energy savings between 5-30% are
very common after implementation of
the energy savings measures. Solar hot
water systems, state-of-the-art, can
save an extra 70 % on the hot water
bill.

COMMUNITY
SERVICES
The season has brought its usual
abundance of citrus and leafy green
vegetables, so it does have its good
points. We are grateful for the
donations of surplus produce which we
pass on to others. Hopefully not too
many suffered colds and ‘flu this year,
and we are pleased that it seems to
have missed most of us at the
Community House to date. Talking
about the weather brings us to
comment on the slight drop in numbers
at our monthly seniors’ lunch. Most of
the regulars came along in spite of the
cooler day and while it is tempting to
stay inside and keep warm - getting
dressed up in all our warm clothes to
enjoy a day out does a lot of good too.
Fun & Games
A happy group is enjoying our ‘Fun &

Anglican Church Footprints room.
Come along and join in - we plan the
next one for Monday 12 August, but
just to be sure we suggest you phone
the House on 431 9080 to confirm this
date. This is also the venue for the

Fifty years ago, on July 20th 1969,
people all over the world watched in
awe, as Mankind’s effort to put a man
on the moon came to fruition. Mark
Lewington has timed his solo
exhibition to coincide with the
anniversary. Mark explains, ‘some
would say our greatest achievement but
with that achievement came doubt,
questions, and conspiracy that polarizes
us today’. Mark’s artworks dance
around the question ‘did they land on
the moon? It's still open for
debate, still questionable… hence
Alleged seems a fitting title for my
show’.
In a second part of the exhibition Mark
has sourced various portrait prints and
paintings, proceeded to paint on a
suitable animalistic alter ego- a mask,
helmet, balaclava or headpiece that will
work. He says. ‘for me this is about
getting back to anonymity, in a world
of mass surveillance and automated
facial recognition. These immortalised
works may have spent decades in the
spotlight, are they hiding something?
Masking these portraits gives them
back their privacy, their freedom to
exist anonymously in the public eye. I
aim to captivate, intrigue, provoke,
question, and to make the audience
smile. That’s my goal in art!’
Mark approaches his painted works
from a design perspective, using spray
paint, stencils, hand painting, screen
print and layered vinyl cut graphics. ‘I
predominantly choose to paint on
recycled surfaces or objects - things
that have history, their own unique
nostalgic characteristics and charm.
These raw beginnings precept the
creative process, setting the backdrop
for my expression. I love the
overwhelming power and yet subtlety
of empty space, raw texture and vibrant
colour’.
This exhibition, a first winter
exhibition in Mangawhai Artists
Gallery, is showcasing an interesting
and eclectic selection of work in a
variety of mediums from digital art and
painting to lighting and 3 dimensional
objects. ‘Alleged’ is on in Mangawhai
Artists Gallery until Wednesday 31
July.

QUOTES BY MAYA ANGELOU IN AN INTERVIEW BY OPRAH ON
HER 70+ BIRTHDAY.
“I’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems
today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow”
“I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles
these three things; a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas Tree lights!”
“I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss
them when they are gone from your life”.
“I’ve learned that making a ‘ living’ is not the same as ’making a life’”
“I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance”.
“I’ve learned that whenever I decide with an open heart, I usually make the
right decision.”
“I’ve learned that whenever I have pains, I don’t have to be one.”
“ I’ve learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone.”
“I’ve learned that people love a warm hug, or a friendly pat on the back.”
“I’ve learned that I still have a lot to learn.”

Housebound service
We are looking at starting a new
service in the community where
volunteers deliver library books to
people who aren't able to get to the
library due to being house-bound. Does
this sound like something
you would be interested in?
Contact Wendy to talk about
it; we will talk about what
sort of books you like to
read, how many you might
want in one delivery, and
who might deliver the books
to you - it doesn't have to be
a library volunteer, it could
be a neighbour or friend of
yours. You could select the
books, or we could select
them for you. Call me
(Wendy) at the library on 4312 539, or
at home on 4312 725, or call or text my
mobile 027 480 6275 - I can
call you back if you don't
have minutes to spare on
your phone.
Sad news

lovely bright spark, and we
will miss her.
NZ Book Awards for Children &
Young Adults
The finalists for this year's awards were
announced a little while ago. We
already had some of the books on our
shelves, and I ordered the rest. Most
are now on the shelves and ready to be
borrowed. They range across Junior
Picture (JPIC), Junior Fiction (JF),
Junior Non-Fiction (JNF), and Teen
Fiction (YP) titles. You can see the
whole list in the library, or go to http://
bit.ly/BooksCYA2019.
I've
been
reading some of the YP books, and
they're excellent reads.
Book reviews
If you like reading about vampires, I
can
recommend
Elizabeth
Hunter's
Elemental
Mysteries series: (1) A
hidden fire, (2) This same
Earth, (3) The force of wind,
and (4) A fall of water. "A
phone call from an old friend
sets Dr. Giovanni Vecchio
back on the path of a mystery
he'd abandoned years before.
He never expected a young
librarian could hold the key
to the search, nor could he
have expected the danger she
would attract. Now he and
Beatrice De Novo will follow a twisted
maze that leads from the archives of a
university library, through
the fires of Renaissance
Florence, and toward a
confrontation they never
could have predicted." I
enjoyed this series a lot.
They're on the Rental Fiction
shelves in the library.
Invisibly breathing by Eileen
Merriman is an excellent
read. It's a "moving story
about unconventional love,
bullying and being true to
yourself." It's a finalist in the
NZ Book Awards mentioned above,
and I wouldn't be surprised if it's a
winner. You'll find it in the library on
the Rental Fiction shelves this year,
though it is classed as Teen Fiction
(YP) and is free to borrow.
You can place a request to borrow any
or all of these books by logging in to
your account at Enterprise*, or via our
library app, and I'll contact you when
the item(s) are ready for you to pick up.
See you in the library, Wendy

Port Nelson New Zealand 1948, a
merchant sailor met a pretty young girl
of sixteen, an amorous evening
eventuated and a few months later
unable to explain to her parents the
reason for her tummy bulge was sent
off to a birthing hospital for unmarried
mothers. A great disgrace had come
over the house of Hogan and it must be
covered up!
The hospital built in an out of the way
town of Waverley sent all the un-
wanted
(supposedly)
babies
to
Wanganui Hospital. One day a
childless couple came to the specific
ward and after some moments chose
me to join their family. The baby
Richard Malcolm Hogan became
Bevan Lawrence.
In 1985 the laws on adoption changed
thereby allowing the child to find its
parents, only if no veto had been
placed on their name. {New Zealand
Legal Adoption was introduced in 1881
the first in the British Empire} So
following a recommended procedure, a
carefully worded letter was sent to my
birth mother respectfully asking three
questions - any known hereditary
medical history, do I have siblings and
who was my father.
By return a lot of vitriol was received,
threatening physical harm should
further contact be made. By the age of
thirty-six with the beginning of a
family of my own, I decided on a
holiday trip while passing to drive by
the house my mother lived in.
Surprisingly the house in Taupo was up
for sale, so I knocked on the door and
pretended to be interested in buying the
home. So that is how I met my mother
for the one and only time. I perused the
house for family photographs but there
were none to be seen. I have since
found Aunties, half sibling’s two
brothers
and
one
sister, who are great
family but quite far
away and not seen
often enough.
My adoptive father
died in a car crash
when I was a teen and
I was able to build a
new house for my
mother next to ours
and she enjoyed her
grandchildren for the
years up to her
demise from poor
health.

mother
passed
away
also and was
not
mourned
by me.
Today
at
nearly seventy
I am resuming
my continuous
lifelong search
for my father; I
have had a
DNA test done which denotes me as
being 50% Irish (mother’s side) and
strongly Scottish from the clan of Mac
Neil on the paternal side.
Now along with my wife who also has
Scottish heritage, we decided to
personally meet folk from the isle of
Barra. Landing on the beach in a Twin
Otter we disembarked with excitement.
Barra is very like Mangawhai but with
rocks everywhere, no fences, free-
range sheep and houses dotted about
anywhere.
The main town is Castle Bay, which
has a hotel and general store. The
beaches are pretty but really cold
considering it was mid-June. We went
to our Clan Castle, which is also on an
island. The big event of the day was
meeting Callum Mc Neil the island
genealogist. Not long after entering the
lounge and sitting down his wife stated
that I looked like the Mac Neil over the
bay, Callum quickly agreed, he said it
was the white hair that reminded him.
So now we begin again the search for
another Cullum Mc Neil a merchant
seaman who moved to Nova Scotia.
Almost everyone on Barra is Mac Neil,
and Callum is Scots for Malcolm.
