This wonderful photo was taken
at Eutopia Café on 5 January.
The amazing golden colour can
be see online (sorry). This was
the day we all noticed the weird
colour of the sky, the day the
when the thickest Australian
bush fire smoke was across our
country.
Kaiwaka A Great Place to Be:
Eutopia Café was listed in the
NZ Herald 13 January as a ‘place
to visit’.
Facebook Smiley Campaign
posted ‘Kaiwaka Lights are on!’
Stuff.NZ also wrote in “Small

and
they
listed
Kaiwaka as third in their lists.

NZ WEATHER
Mean
annual
temperature for New
Zealand is calculated from NIWA's
Seven Station Series which uses
measurements derived from seven
climate
locations
at
Auckland,
Masterton,
Wellington,
Hokitika,
Nelson, Lincoln and Dunedin. The
Seven Station Series dates back to
1909 and shows New Zealand’s
average annual temperature has
increased by about 1ᵒC over the past
100 years.
It also shows that five of the last 10
years have ranked somewhere in the
top 10 warmest years on record –
including 2016 which was New
Zealand’s hottest year on record. This
year, 2019, will join that list and
almost certainly sit among the top five
hottest.
Here’s how this decade ranks:
Year Anomaly (°C) Rank
2016 +0.84 1st
2018 +0.8 equal 2nd
2013 +0.72 5th
2017 +0.54 6th
2010 +0.46 10th
2011 +0.22 22nd
2014 +0.18 equal 26th
2015 +0.14 30th
2012 -0.15 equal 44th
2009 -0.32 equal 52nd Source: NIWA’s
Seven Station Temperature Series which
began in 1909.
So, what’s the weather been like this
year? As usual, a little bit of
everything. But for the record the
hottest temperature was 38.4ᵒC at
Hanmer Forest on January 31. The
coldest temperature for 2019 was -
9.2ᵒC at Lake Tekapo on June 3 and
the wettest? That was Rings Beach,
Coromandel Peninsula on September 9
which stood at 226mm when the day
ended.

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
Welcome to 2020.
My goodness where did
2019 go. That mad joyful month has
gone with another one at the end of this
year.
December greeted us with a hot fine
partly cloudy day followed with rain
later settling to a mixed month of all
sorts. We even got the thunderstorms
and torrential rain. Not everybody was
so lucky. In that shower we got 26mm.
Then of course those strong south
westerlies started again. Actually, one
would have thought it was winter again
with that cold, cold wind. Well it all
calmed down a bit for the big day.
There was still that strong south
westerly but at least it was fine.
Well the rest of the month was a bit
fickle ending on a beautiful hot sunny
day with 30deg on our thermometer.
December at our house and for the
year reads as: December 2019 we had
173mm rain and 2018 we had 204mm.
We had rain on 10 days in 2019 and 12
days in 2018.
Our total rainfall for 2019 was 1234
and for 2018 was 1841mm.
Our driest December since 1987 was
1994 with 4mm and the wettest was
2014 with 211mm.
Our driest 12 months of any year since
1987 was 1994 with 892mm and the
wettest was 1990 with 1947mm.
No wonder we are dry this year. I hope
the holiday period treated you kindly
and if not sending wishes for a great
new decade.

When a small rural community hosts an
ambitious fundraiser for a vital local
cause it’s a bonus if it attracts people
and funds from outside the area.
The Dahlias for Dementia Garden and
House Tour 2020, being held on the
weekend of 22 and 23 February in
Kaipara, will be attended by people
from Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel
and further afield while some
volunteers hail from the South Island.
The event will raise funds for a new 14
-bed dementia unit in Maungaturoto
which will serve the wider Kaipara
community. The tour includes 20
properties – both rural and urban.
Seven homes will also be open.
Karen Smales, who’s on the Dahlias
for Dementia team, says support from
the community has been heartening.
People have bought tickets and
promoted it to friends and family who
live elsewhere.
“Many locals will be hosting people
who will do the tour. Small
communities need to find ways to bring
in outside funds, both through ticket
sales and sponsorships.”
She says the tour got early support
from Alzheimers Northland and,
leading on from that, Bayleys Real
Estate Northland which is selling
tickets at five of its offices. And, of
course, working hard in the background
are all the generous property owners
who’ve been kind enough to put their
properties on show.
“Our community is very grateful.
Accommodation in dementia units in
Northland is tight and the situation is
getting more challenging.”
Lunch sales key fundraiser
Karen says a major fundraising aspect
of the tour is lunches which can be
ordered along with tickets or closer to
the event. “We have an award-winning
caterer on our team. Her stunning home
and garden are open for the tour and
she’ll be assisted on the day by family
members who are also talented caterers
and come from outside Northland.”
Caterer Annie Pryde says her helpers
will include a son, nephew and his
wife, a sister, niece and cousin. Most
are from Auckland, but one is from
Whangarei and another Rotorua.
“We’re a family of keen foodies and
talented cooks.”
Ticketholders can pick up lunch from
10am to 2pm and enjoy it then or take
it elsewhere. Many gardens have
perfect picnic spots, plus there are
parks like the Village Green in
Paparoa. There are also cafes on the
tour route.

REVAMPED Top of the Rock! There
are two running/walking routes: a 5km
and a 10km. The 5km route goes past
the two lakes near Baldrock Road. The
10km route traverses private land never
before opened to the public, reaching a
lofty spot on the hills of the
Brynderwyn with fantastic views to the
ocean to the east and through to the
Kaipara Harbour to the west.
Spectacular!
Back
at

afterwards, there will be prizegiving
with prizes for place-getters plus lots
of great spot prizes, including a

preschoolers are free. The Under 10’s
bike ride is also free.
A raffle will be drawn for a Husqvarna
lawnmower, kindly donated by Matt
from Kaiwaka Motorcycles. Tickets
are $5 (or 3 for $12) and you can buy

AND DISTRICTS
ROTARY
First of all, we would like to thank all
of you who have supported our various
projects during the past year. This
support enables us to contribute more
to the community than would
otherwise be possible.
The latest effort was the grocery
hamper raffle, kindly donated by Pam
Chapman. The lucky winner was Chum
Jones – C032.
President’s Scholarship
At recent meetings we
were able to present this
year’s
President’s
Scholarship of $1,500 to
Mya Lawrence (who is
going to study Bio-Medical Science at
Auckland
next
year,
hopefully
culminating in a research post later on)
and also to hear from Annmarie Holst
(last year’s winner) who
spoke about this past year.
She has been studying
Exercise
Science
and
Business. She has really
enjoyed getting to know
fellow residents and also
compete in inter-residency events. As
these are team events, they have
provided a different perspective from
squash. While competitive squash has
been put aside for the moment her
ultimate aim is to play for the NZ
Women’s team. Both young ladies are
excellent role models from this
community.
Another speaker we had was Glenn
Orford who covered three areas – his
work at the refinery (and how he is part
of the emergency support team there;
his work as a volunteer firefighter
within this community, and how it has
changed through the years; and finally,
his recent involvement with the Sky
Tower climb. This latter event is not
only a physical challenge but also each
participant needs to raise funds for
leukaemia. We are indeed fortunate to
have volunteer firefighters like Glenn
who are prepared to provide support
when it is needed, whether it be fire or
accident.
Senior’s afternoon tea
We were also able to host another
successful senior’s afternoon tea.
About 50 people from our wider
community were able to socialize and
enjoy entertainment by some of Maura
Flower’s talented young performers.
Thank you to all who helped us on the
day.
Donations
At our final meeting we were able to
donate amounts to two groups at
Otamatea High School - $2,400 to the
Duke of Edinburgh group and $1,200
to the William Pike Challenge. Both of
these groups aim to increase the
resilience and community mindedness
of the participant, just at different year
levels.
We wish you all the best for the New
Year and hope that 2020 will be a year
to remember for all the right reasons in
this community.

BOOK OPINION
‘Leaning towards Infinity:
how my mother's apron unfolds
into my life.’
This Aussie novel from the '90s is a
major achievement for creative writing
teacher, Sue Woolfe.
Dry as fire descriptions of small-town,
small-horizon Australians explode like
the characters in cinema's Muriel's
Wedding, insincere, ignorant and cruel.
A marriage folds, if it ever was, father
telling his daughter the wedding day
was his only happiness, she shocked to
realise the sympathy and talent she
sought in her 'genius’ mother lay with a
figure she disregarded.
"He was a geometer."
Hard to read and tough to review,
Woofe’s book is one for the
'Understand Australians' shelf, beside
the
Niland
books,
Bush
Ballads
and
Gumnut
Babies.
The four covers found on the net
indicate how hard it is to pigeonhole.
The omega symbol settled on in
subsequent editions by marketers is
absent on the first: a print from the
NSW Art Gallery by iconic Hungarian
photographer Andre Kertesz whose
subject is wide-eyed and uncertain.
In a way that Fred Dagg and his creator
John Clarke have a significance which
Kiwis recognise, Woolfe's doubts,
shocks and longing to love, are route
markers for a generation of little
Australians. ~ HP

People tend to make resolutions in the
new year. Organisations set targets and
Kaiwaka Can at its first meeting for
2020 set a few targets to aim at.
Nothing world shattering, but all with a
purpose and hopefully a benefit.
Here are some of them:
Better
communication
with
Kaiwaka and surrounds.
At present we use mainly The Bugle to
get the word out. It is a great little
paper, and many read it. But a
surprising number never read it and
after years of operation, say they have
never heard of Kaiwaka Can.
So, we will set up a web page and a
Facebook page for those who get their
news this way.
Stage One of the Kaiwaka
Central Plan.
This is the plan that aims to improve
walking links from Oneriri Road to the
Eutopia side, as well as clean up and
develop the surrounding patches of
land so that the centre of the town is
attractive and useable. Council meets
with us this week to look at the piece of
land below Mormors, which is Council
land and which would make a good
green space and picnic area. They are
also getting geotech reports of the river
banks so we can make some progress
on the footbridge across the river.
Welcome sculptures.
These are the huge (3-metre-high)
sculptures at each end of the town to
welcome people to Kaiwaka and also
give us more identity. We have to clear
away a raft of requirements from
NZTA first, but we want to get on with
it. If you have a willingness to learn
skills in ferro cement sculpting, there
will be a place for you on the project.
McClean Park
(the rest area just
north of the town, below Gateway
Motel).
We have long wanted to develop this to
be far more useful and attractive than it
is at present. There are many ideas
around for what could be included. One
interesting idea is a pontoon for
kayakers who can take quite a trip from
there on the right tides.
Lighting
We made a good start on the lighting at
the end of last year and we plan to
continue with more lights through the
town. We have a great team working
on this and we look forward to the
changes the lights will make to our
visibility.
And there are more...
By the way, an article from Stuff.NZ
over Christmas was entitled “Small
towns of NZ that shine in summer” and
they listed Kaiwaka as third in their
lists. The amazing thing was it made
the list even before Eutopia opened!
So, there must be something worth
caring about here.

From Thelma’s
Scrapbook …
I Want To Be A
Weed!
A
few months ago my wife was
lamenting the state of our veggie
garden. We’d had a great summer
of bounty: plenty of fruit and
vegetables had come from the soil
on our property and we had
enjoyed many meals with
everything on our plates either
grown or hunted … something we
find incredibly satisfying.
But on this particular occasion,
things were looking somewhat grim
in the veggie patch. Our summer
produce was looking pretty spent -
the tomatoes had seen better days,
the spinach had gone to seed and
the beans were looking limp and
wasted. In fact the only things that
were thriving … were the weeds.
But before you’d have me reach for
the
Round-Up
, consider this: What
is it about weeds that causes them
to flourish, when everything around
is dying? I mean they are built for
survival! They need far less looking-
after than our veggies. They don’t
need fertilising or bug sprays.
They’re not susceptible to powdery
mildew, copper deficiencies or a
myriad of other potential vegetable
issues. They’ll thrive in the wet …
or the dry! And seemed to have
adapted to whatever environmental
conditions they find themselves in.
Talk about resilient!
And man can they reproduce!
There’s no need to carefully plant
them out in special ‘seed-raising’
beds and tend to their every need.
They simply toss out a gazillion
seeds, let the wind or birds do their
thing, wait for the right conditions
and then … BAM! Weed city!
Weeds are survival experts …
they’re tenacious … they're
generous … in fact, they’re
everything I’d like to be!
Except hated.
Now where’s that Round-Up?

………DON’T MISS THIS UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY …………………
Article 1: Energy efficiency is
priority
INTRODUCTION
New Zealand’s electricity use is
characterised by decades of very low
energy efficiency in general and GOVT
has not dealt with it properly for ages.
Electricity prices are high and keep
rising every year. The growing
electrification of NZ is stimulated by
GOVT and Power companies while
fuel poverty is still growing, and more
families struggle to pay their high
electricity bills.
There is an urgent need for correct
information and education on how to
reduce energy bills, save money and
help reducing CO2-emissions at the
same time.
We hope to debunk the many myths on
energy and solar energy in particular,
by a series of articles that are
informative, and summarising the real
facts on the state-of-the-art solar
technology.
NZ’s big problem is low energy
efficiency
for
hot
water
production and heating.
More than 80% of all buildings
in NZ use electricity for cooking,
hot water production and heating
which is NOT very efficient.
Electricity
produced
in
centralised power plants is transported
and distributed over long distances,
creating huge losses before the
electricity even is used at end user
level.
Another extra 30% losses and more
electricity is further lost because at end-
use applications like hot water
production, cooking and heating.
Especially the production of hot water
with electrical cylinders creates huge
standing losses which are reflected in
high electricity bills.
Energy efficiency in the house
In the coming articles we will explain
how to create a more efficient lifestyle
with more comfort and lower electricity
bills. The main solutions to ‘kill’ the
electricity bill are LPG and Solar
energy. Eric Jansseune

SEVEN LIVES ON SALT RIVER
Dick Scott (Richard George Scott ONZM,17 November 1923 – 1
January 2020) was a journalist, writer, historian. He wrote a
number of books - the one I found of local interest was Seven
Lives on Salt River (1987), an account of seven families who
settled in the Kaipara district, which won the 1988 New Zealand
Book Award Histories of seven early settler families at Pahi,
northeast of Kaipara Harbour, N.Z. Jackman; de Labrosse ;
Pook; Stevens; Blackwell; Coates; Scotland. (First published by Hodder &
Stoughton 1987).
[Dick Scott noted one of our family ‘was a striking woman, her looks owing something
to the Spanish blood in her family’ - we do know her mother’s maiden name Spain! Ed.]
