Our local high school students have had
wonderful success in a wide rage of
activities
Student Representative
Michael Ferguson has been elected as
the Board of Trustees Student
Representative for 2021 - seen here
speaking to the school assembly
Waharoa
Last Tuesday the whakairo classes went
to Whangarei Heads Playcentre to
deliver and erect the waharoa that they
were commissioned to make – as noted
in Bugle 18. ‘The waharoa was
gratefully received by tamariki and
parents of the playcentre. The students
represented their kura, hapū and iwi
with pride. Nga mihi nui koutou katoa.
Turou Hawaiki!’
Senior Netball
Both Otamatea Senior Netball Teams
made the finals of their grades, played
at Whangarei Netball Centre, for the
second year in a row. Team 2 seen here
with coaches Siobhan and Jodie
following their win, and with their
trophy
Market Day
The OTA market day was a great
success following weeks of planning
and preparation by the students, with
teacher support, culminated in a fun,
busy and exciting day. Six senior
groups and two Year 10 groups sold out
of their quality products enjoyed by the
rest of the school. The seniors can now
go on to complete their assessments.
Podriga in the Park: Two excellent
days of music on the top field in the
inaugural Podriga in the Park. The
students did a fabulous job of
entertaining the enthusiastic crowd.
And their Senior Ball is ON!
They have lots of donated dresses,
shoes and accessories if needed (see
Mrs Coll or Ladene or Taira). The
Senior students are looking forward to a
fabulous evening of friends, food, and
dancing.

ABOUT TOWN
Thank you for the wonderful response to our Yates Vegie Grower Hamper -
Liane at Yates has added a runner up prize - the winner will be decided at the
time of printing.
The Council has parked a new BBQ table in the playground outside the Hall -
it is big, smooth and concrete; the new concrete in front of the men’s toilets is
the base for a bike stand.
Welcome to Suzy of Kalon Hairdressing - opening soon, next to Kaiwaka
Motorcycles
The Kauri Museum Settlers Day has been cancelled. In previous years
Settlers Day has attracted over 1500 visitors - too many at the Covid-19 Level
One; Kaiwaka's Fright Night is in a similar position - too many folk too close
together, so at this stage is cancelled.
A very well done to Maura and Peter Flower and pupils with the success at
the Northland Performing Arts Singing Festival in Whangarei - see page 17
Our best to Neville Dowson on his special birthday!!

If you need to go to hospital in
Whangarei or Dargaville,
either in
a hurry, for a planned stay, or to visit
someone it may be useful to be a bit
prepared. It can be hard when you are
away from home and you don’t have
what you need to make your stay a little
more comfortable.
•
For those of you who have access to
the internet the Northland DHB website
has
lots
of
useful
info,
see
www.northlanddhb.org.nz
•
If you are going for a hospital stay
bring your medicines with you so the
medical team can see what you are
taking; take your glasses; hearing aids;
phone and charger; any phone numbers
you might need; notepaper; books or
magazines.
HOSPITAL VISITING:
•
Whangarei Hospital visiting hours
are generally from 11am - 8pm, except
ward
15
-
Assessment
and
Rehabilitation which is 2pm - 8pm, and
the Mental Health Unit which is 2pm -
5pm. The Children’s Ward, Special
Care Baby Unit, ICU and CCU have
their own hours.
•
Patients need their rest when in
hospital so if unsure give the ward a
call. Ideally there are only 2 visitors per
patient at a time to be considerate for
other patients.
•
Dargaville Hospital has open visiting
hours except during ward rounds, or if
there are too many visitors at one time.
•
For patient enquiries call Whangarei
Hospital 09 4304 101 ext 7271 or
Dargaville hospital 09 4393 330.
HOSPITAL PARKING
•
There is a cost for parking Monday to
Friday 8.30am - 5pm at Whangarei
Hospital, with the first hour
being free. Weekends and
after 5pm are also free. The
new theatres being built in
front of the main carpark off Maunu
Road has reduced the number of parks
there, but if that carpark is full follow
the blue line up the hill past the main
entrance, and up to carpark 7 where you
should find some more spaces available
for the public.
•
On leaving, if you have been longer
than an hour, pay for your parking at a
booth on the ground floor of the
hospital near the main entrance or in the
main carpark. On exiting the carpark,
you need to put your ticket in the
barrier machine to raise the barrier arm
regardless of whether you had to pay
for your parking.
•
The parking administrator and security
are there to help if needed. They will be
patrolling the carparks and can also be
found at the security desk next to the
main entrance. Call 0800 472 757 to
contact the Parking Administrator.
•
Remember the Linking Hands Shuttle
based in Maungaturoto can arrange to
take you to hospital appointments in
Whangarei, Dargaville or Wellsford -

KAIWAKA MOVIES
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are looking for some volunteers to help run the Kaiwaka Movies - to boost
our team numbers.
Our Kaiwaka movies are held once a fortnight - 7.30pm start on a Friday
evening. (with an occasional break!).
We run a tuck shop selling ice-creams/drinks/chips bars etc., and have a halftime
break for fellowship and a cuppa.
As well as regular movies (you might like to choose), we have special film
musical and dinner evenings.
We have brilliant equipment audio/visual equipment - this includes 5x300 watt
speakers on stands, a 1000watt subwoofer, the operation of a large commercial
fixed projector, an 8-metre-wide movie screen, and a blu ray player and
amplifier. I am happy to teach a willing person and run in partnership.
The Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall is dependent on the movie income.
So, if you are interested to be involved in this, or want to know more contact me.

THE KAURI
MUSEUM
SETTLERS DAY 2020
CANCELLED
The Kauri Museum has announced that
the 2020 Settlers Day event, scheduled
for October 3rd, has been cancelled.
Covid-19 presents challenges for
holding indoor events where large
numbers of people are expected to
attend. We have therefore made the
decision to cancel Settlers Day 2020.
We will instead be uploading digital
content to our social media accounts
highlighting our annual live day. Keep
an eye on our Facebook and Instagram
accounts as we share 10 years of our
community
coming
together
to
celebrate our cultural heritage.
Settlers Day is the one day of the year
when The Kauri Museum truly comes
to life as we explore stories and
activities of the past. It is our chance to
dress up and have some fun! Visitors
take part in a wide range of activities
including rope making, print making
and butter making as our volunteers
share their skills. Engines are fired up
and the billy is boiled. The smell of
strong tea and diesel engines fill the air,
there is truly nothing like it.
In previous years Settlers Day, has
attracted over 1500 visitors who joined
in the festivities. We are looking
forward to doing it again next year - put
a note in your diary for October 2021
and come along to a revitalised Settlers
Day.
In the meantime, The Kauri Museum
remains open for visitors 7 days a
week, from 9am to 5pm.

AGM: Wednesday 7 October, 3pm at
the Community House, 155 Hurndall
Street OCS. All welcome.
We must continue to keep a daily watch
on the latest news and information
regarding our situation with Covid 19.
It is so important to keep within the
guidelines given if we are to maintain
our health and safety. We are fortunate
in the north to have been spared the
large impacts from the virus that other
areas have, so we must do what is
required to stay that way.
Also, very big on everyone’s calendar
is the upcoming general election, now
to take place on Saturday 17 October.
As I write, the polling booth locations
are being finalised, so I’m not able to
list the venues here. They will be made
public as soon as possible. Be sure to
vote, take care in selecting your
candidates, your vote will be counted.
Let’s hope for the right outcome for all
New Zealanders.
Our OCTOBER month’s calendar is as
follows:
Monday 5 – Fun & Games, The
Footprints Room, Anglican Church,

Like everybody else we are trying to
adjust to the new normal in the safest
way for our members. During the past
month we have had a diverse range of
speakers
and
have
successfully
completed one sausage sizzle which has
helped our fundraising efforts to the
tune of almost $400.
William Pike challenge
Speakers have included Nyree Alcock
from the High School who told us about
the William Pike challenge. Even with
Covid 19, 31 Year 7 and 8 students
have completed some aspects of the
challenge this year. Because of
limitations the outdoor activities have
been severely impacted. Overall, this
challenge enables students to step
outside their comfort zone, take risks,
build confidence and strengthen
relationships. Our club has been able to
contribute $1,200 towards costs for this
scheme this year.
From the Kauri Museum
We were very interested to hear from
Tracey from the Kauri Museum who
spoke to us about planned upgrades,
mainly with money from the Provincial
Growth Fund. This icon in our area has
always had a progressive approach to
displays and the future plans will
certainly enhance the experience for
visitors. Some of the plans that she
spoke about were a forest corridor at
the entrance which will effectively
present a walk through time and a
Science and Discovery centre which
will provide more information and
hands on experience on carbon-dating
and ecology. This will be in addition to
the educational packs already offered.
The café is also going to be upgraded
and it will be themed. This Museum has
always been a “go to” spot when I have
had visitors and I can always find
something new and interesting on site.
Maungaturoto Primary school
Our club is looking forward to an
ongoing
relationship
with
the
Maungaturoto Primary school. At the
moment plans are being drawn up for
the construction of a cycle track at the
school. Late in August two Rotarians
were able to join youngsters from
Rooms 9 and Room 6 and help them
plant native trees and grasses in the area
beside the creek on the west side of the
school. We look forward to the
enhanced landscape as do the children.
Piroa Falls
Unfortunately, the huge amount of rain
has played havoc with the track at Piroa
Falls. The track will need considerable
work on it to restore easy access. There
has also been erosion up at the Falls,
but this will not be tackled until the
flow of water is much lower. We will
work in conjunction with DOC on this
project. It never ceases to amaze us the
number of people who visit this scenic
spot even though it is out of the way.
(And on a recent visit, there were
people swimming.)
World Polio Day
The 24th of October is World Polio
Day and we will be undertaking some
form of activity in relation to this.
While the impact of this disease is
foreign to the younger generation many
of us remember people, who became
crippled or even died in NZ in the
middle of last century. With the help of
vaccination programmes endorsed and
supported by Rotary, there are now
only a few pockets of wild polio which
need to be obliterated.
Calf litter
While we will not have calf litter this
year, we are hoping to have mulch to
sell by the trailer load. We will
advertise this when it becomes
available.
The President’s Scholarship
is now
open, and forms can be obtained from a
Rotarian or the OHS office. This closes
on 27th October. ~ Eileen

ATHLETIC
CLUB
This is another club that is in need of
new members. We have traditionally
operated on a Monday from 5 to
6.30pm at Otamatea High School but
this season we are looking at changing
our night to a Wednesday. We have
enjoyed a large amount of parental
support in the past (this is essential if
we are to run an effective programme.
We seem to have mainly a junior focus
– 5 years to 14 years, but we try to
support
families
with
preschool
children as well.
If you are interested in either/both of
the above could you, please leave me
(Eileen) a message on my cell phone:
021 142 0357 or email me at:
b.parsons@xtra.co.nz. I look forward to
hearing from you. Meeting times will
be arranged that are suitable to those
who are interested.
MAUNGATUROTO SWIM
CLUB
While we have run a very successful
Swimsafe program in Term 1 each year,
largely thanks to Rachel and her
helpers, the Club has not functioned in
the past season. Many of the Executive
have moved away and we need to know
who would be interested in helping us
form a committee to get this under way
again. We also need to know the
availability of coaches to help us run
the
programme.
The
coaching
programme will depend on the
availability of the pools in our area.
KAIPARA BASKETBALL
The Kaipara Basketball Association
Incorporated's AGM is to be held on
Tuesday, 29 September, 6.30pm at the
Kaiwaka Sports Association Pavilion.
All are welcome.

In the last Bugle, editor Lindsey invited
readers to ring in about the mess
McClean Park is in.
It has been like that for a long time and
despite walkabouts, phone calls, pleas
for help to clean it up, nothing has
happened. Sad! Every visitor to
Northland goes past it.
But also, a bit strange. In Kaiwaka we
have very little recreational land apart
from the Sports grounds and a pocket
handkerchief of land on the corner of
Settlement and SH1. McClean Park was
once the local sports ground until
drainage problems and the need for
development led to the sports grounds
off Gibbons Road. It was originally
given by the McClean family to
Kaiwaka and when the move to the
sports ground came, the local belief is
that it was vested in the Council. And
of course, there is Maori history
stretching way back before settlers
arrived.
And so, it has sat, trees falling,
driveways perished, and potholed,
grassed areas used as skid pans by the
hoon end of society. It has also been a
rubbish dump for both visitors and
locals. Occasionally whole trailer loads
are dumped to go with the bottles,
wrappers, takeaway boxes and human
excrement prominent at the southern
end. There used to be a toilet there.
Some people haven't noticed it is no
longer there.
So, what to do about it?
Getting it
cleaned up is just part of the story. The
rest of the story is about maximising
this large chunk of land to become an
asset and not a liability. It is sad if its
future is only about cleaning it up so it
looks more attractive.
One problem
has been the question of
ownership. We have been asking
Council this for nearly six years and
received a variety of answers, usually
revolving round different combinations
of Council, DOC and NZTA. Which
means nobody takes responsibility.
Elizabeth Preston did a great job for
many years, mowing, clearing rubbish,
planting a garden but
now is time for the
rest of us.
Over the years we
have been gathering
ideas about future
use. Kaiwaka Sports
Assn. at the initiative
of Lindsey Hargreaves has applied for
funding for a pontoon for kayaking.
Yes, the estuary subsides into mud for
low tide, but many local people have
been kayaking from here right out to
the open water.
We planned early on a riverside walk
on the other side of the river from
McClean Park round the peninsula of
land used by the Brethren factories.
Council backed off when health and
safety requirements looked too hard,
but it is back on the table again. And of
course, we are working to link it by
footbridge to the rest of Kaiwaka – but
that's another story.
So, what do you think?
Ideas have
included a dog exercise park. It is
popular for travellers who already use it
like this. Use it as a memorial garden
and park, tidy it up and make it safe for
freedom campers, landscape it so that
the river becomes an attraction instead
of something you battle through weeds
to reach – and of course the kayak
pontoon. There is even room to make
an attractive garden. Local Maori
history also needs a place for story
boards, maybe murals.
Yes, vandalism is a problem. But
cannot be the final whistle on the
future.
So, what do you think, Kaiwaka
?
How about ideas? Send them into
Lindsey at the Bugle or to Kaiwaka Can
and we will get a group working to
make sure it happens.
Happy creative thinking!

POLICE REMEMBRANCE DAY
SERVICES HONOUR FALLEN AND
DECEASED OFFICERS
Police staff and members of the Police
whānau will gather on Tuesday 29
September
to mark Police Remembrance Day,
which is held every year on 29 September, the
feast day of the Archangel Michael, the Patron
Saint of Police.
The day honours Police staff who have been
slain or died as a result of their duties, as well as
serving, retired and former Police staff who have passed
away in the preceding 12 months.
The national Police Remembrance Day service will be held
at the Royal New Zealand Police College in Porirua on
Tuesday 29 September, and a number of local services will
be also be held across New Zealand.
On Police Remembrance Day, Police staff throughout New
Zealand wear the Huia pin (pictured), which was developed
by the Police Association and NZ Police. The tail plumage
of the Huia – now lost to us
– is something rare and
special and to wear it is
considered by Māori to be a
great
honour.
By
incorporating the Police
chevron into the Huia tail
feather, the design of the
pin
symbolises
the
honouring
of
someone
special, now lost to police.
