The pink and grey oyster mushrooms are the ‘oyster’ choice of Sam Chang.
Sam who lives on the Oneriri Peninsula loves the Kaipara and loves fishing, but now he is
a regular grower of mushrooms. He is a qualified engineer and put this skill to designing
and building his own mushroom house three years ago. This building is has special
controls for the temperature, light and humidity, CO
2
,
and a fine irrigation system. It is all
very hygienic - all to create the correct growing conditions for these beautiful
mushrooms.
Sam gets the special mushroom spores flown from Christchurch, he then puts them in
bags of specially prepared barley that he has sterilized and mixes with shaved maize.
Then bags are place on their racks, in the dark for about 3 weeks till ready for ‘picking’.
He will then carefully pick and box them for local restaurants and the Matakana Market.
(Mushrooms grow from spores released into the air from the gills and rely on substances such as
sawdust, grain, straw, wood chips, or liquid for nourishment. A blend of the spores and these
nutrients is called spawn, which supports the growth of mushrooms’ tiny, thread-like roots, called
mycelium.)
Sam also has ideas and recipes for cooking this delicacy as the meaty texture of the
Oyster mushrooms makes for a delicious edible mushroom. They can be sautéed with
other vegetables or added to pasta dishes or soups. Oyster mushrooms are native to the
tropics. They were first
discovered in the late 17th
century by a German-born
botanist G. E. Rumphius in
what is now Indonesia.

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
Welcome to our beautiful
start to spring.
I hope you all remembered to put
clocks forward this year. I do know a
few that forgot.
Already our ground is dry believe it or
not. Although it did not get too boggy
for too long. At the moment the
pastures are looking green. Most of the
spring bulbs have finished flowering
and the spring trees are holding their
blossom thank goodness to the lack of
our usual dreadful September winds.
The Brynderwyn Waterfall, see photo,
had a good flow last time we went to
Whangarei about a month ago.
However, we have not had any rain
since to speak of (last night Thursday
that is we had 8mm) and think we need
a lot more to get that water table up.
So, as they say it will be a dry summer.
I hope for the farmers sake (and
gardeners) we get a bit of rain soon. I
think you should have put that extra
water tank in. I see already the water
tankers and big ones at that working
flat out, best book in early for a load of
water). No use waiting till you run out
as you will have to wait.
At our house for September 2020 we
had 62mm and for 2019 we
had180mm.
We had rain on 11 days this year for
September and 2019 we had rain on 14
days.
Our total so far for 2020 is 1222mm
and last year was 904mm.
Driest September since 1987 was 2000
with 40mm.
Wettest September since 1987 was
1989 with 204mm.
Our driest first 9
months since 1987
was
1987
with
687mm and the
wettest was 2017
with 1512mm. We
have had some
awesome fine days
lately - beautiful
hot and sunny - will
have to get slip slop
and slapping out
already.
October is a month
with 2 Full Moons.
The first one was
on the 1st October
and the second one
will be the 31st
October. 1944 was
the last time this
happened.
School holidays are
finished so it is
back to normality
and routine for a lot
of you. Take care
out there and watch
out for the children
going and coming
home from school.

NIAGARA'S ARRIVAL BLAMED FOR FLU PANDEMIC
Many people believed that a deadly new influenza virus came to New Zealand
aboard the Royal Mail liner Niagara, which arrived in Auckland from
Vancouver and San Francisco on 12 October 1918. This is no longer thought to
have been the case. Twenty-nine Niagara crew members and several passengers
were hospitalised in Auckland, but doctors reported that their cases were no
more severe than others already seen in the city.
Six people had died of the flu in Auckland in the three days before the Niagara
arrived. And the great upsurge in severe cases in the city occurred two weeks
later, well outside the 48-hour incubation period. No one knows exactly how or
when the flu reached New Zealand, and the Niagara was only one of dozens of
ships (many of them carrying returning soldiers and war invalids) to arrive from
Europe and North America in October 1918. Ref ~ nzhistory.govt.nz

RIDING LESSONS
Marj Steiner can regularly be seen in her St. John uniform or out and about in
her wee white truckie, but for many years she has given time to pony club and
horse riding – and loving it!
Marj (NZPCA B cert qualified) with more than 35 years’ experience has now
started doing horse riding lessons at her home (not a fancy arena but it is grass
and flat- pictured), where with your own horse you can do pole work, jumping
(her favourite), dressage and some hill work – cross country jumps in the future.
Confidence building is high on her list.
THE VEGIE HAMPER HAS ARRIVED

KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSOCIATION
AN UPDATE FROM KSA
‘Hopefully Covid is behind us and we
can look to the future.
With no fundraising events possible we
have had to do what a lot of businesses
and clubs have had to do and try and
cut our expenses to minimum.
We are sorry Fright Night could not
go ahead but planning under Covid we
could not guarantee it would happen,
We will be calling for volunteers for
the event next year.
During Lockdown a major repair was
done on the Pavilion roof, volunteers
rustproofed and painted all the rust that
was found during the repair which
should see it last a lot longer; the
grounds have been maintained and
general maintenance is ongoing.
The Fitness track was completed, and
we are in discussions with the Kaipara
District Council about the upgrade of
the carpark.
Looking to the future is difficult, a lot
has changed in the last few years, our
volunteer catering crew has had little in
the way of events that raise money for
us; a few years ago we would regularly
cater for 6 or 8 events such as
weddings and large dinners a year plus
morning teas, etc. which provided a
much appreciated boost to our
finances. The Bar turnover is also
down. These scenarios went a long
way to making the club financial.
Compliance is costing more and adding
more work for the club - the insurance
bill this year was $12,500.00.
Apologies for the KSA website
crashing – it is being worked on now.
KSA Grants – the grant application
forms can be picked from the Three
Furlong Bar & Grill or you may email
kaiwakasportsassn@gmail.com
The KSA complex continues to be very
busy. Last weekend the Northland Un
18s rugby team played Auckland
Under 18s; halftime score was 15-7 to
Auckland, then they put the heat on!
Photo below shows Northland in the
red strip. Mick Sweetman, Northland
manager, was very impressed with the
standard of the fields and changing
rooms.’

KIWI WWOOFERS EXPLORE HOME BASE
The tourist sector has been
talking up local travel as
replacement for the world
of overseas visitors we
have become used to over
the past 25 years.
This past week we have
had proof that Kiwis are
looking to their own
country for adventures in
place of a now-cancelled
overseas trip.
Slaine
Mackenzie
and
Mandy Watkins ditched
their Wellington office jobs
in August and drove to
Lake Waikaremoana to
tramp nine hours a day in
practice for beginning the
3000km Te Araroa Trail <https://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Te_Araroa_Trail>. It was pouring and
the boat that would normally transport
people back to the settlement was not
operating because of the lockdown,
and hence no tourist regulars, but they
relished it.
Avoiding chaos
With the rest of the world looking
hazardous due to disease and "chaos
overseas" the young couple [28 and 29]
reckon seeing the sights of New
Zealand is a good bet.
Not only are they rehearsing for the
endurance trail which they expect to be
walking for five months but they’re
learning the culture of their country
with special attention to organics and
sustainable farming.
Both had until recently been working
in the law: one on the government side
and one with a private company
dealing in intellectual property, Says
Mandy in her profile on the Willing
Workers on Organic Farms {Wwoof}
site, "it’s a Wellington thing".
They joined up with Wwoof, a Nelson-
based network, and quickly found
postings in Whakatane, Kaiwaka and
Dannevirke. Sharing meals, labour and
skills with hosts, they are rising to
challenges they may not otherwise
have had.
"It’s confidence building”, says Slaine.
Up for real work
On his profile Slaine admits to being a
new chum on the farm, "but I always
put my hand up for real work - hauling
lines on the Coastguard boat, doing
roadie work packing in/packing out the
sets for (stage plays he is involved in),
the odd bit of painting or gardening”.
Slaine is also actor, recently taking the
lead in a play by Kiwi playwright Dean
Parker, and Mandy is a costumier, a
talent which came in handy with us as
she's a dab hand with the sewing
machine, even if only on curtains for
windows in their accommodation. True
to their aims they worked out how to
bring a more than 30-year-old machine
recovered from an opshop into working
order.
If the viral disease is brought under
some control Slaine and Mandy intend
to revise their travel plans but in the
meantime the beauty of Aotearoa/New
Zealand, and its networks, has plenty
to offer.
Note: They are our first wwoofers
since lockdown but already we have
other locals on the horizon as well as
international
folk
confined
by
lockdown and looking to explore some
of the methods
we are trialling
with plenty of
personal effort.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
BOOK SWAP
By the time you read this, we will have been to Dargaville
Public Library and exchanged the books we hold of theirs.
Come in and check out the new titles, including the Large
Print ones that are on separate shelves. There will be a
range of DVDs too.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read
The Cornish Cream Tea Bus by
Cressida McLaughlin.
Baking wizz Charlie Quilter
inherits her uncle's vintage double-decker bus that he used
for scenic tours around the Cotswolds. Wanting to make use
of the bus, but looking for a change of scenery, she takes
the bus off to Cornwall to stay
with a friend for a while, and
finds someone to renovate the
bus as a travelling tea rooms
while she's there. But not
everyone is as delighted as she
and her friends are at the
concept of the bus and the
beach-side market she creates,
and she meets some resistance
from the locals - including
hotel owner Daniel, who really
seems irritated by Charlie, she
thinks. This is a delightful read,
and I'm looking forward to the
next book when it arrives. This
book is currently on the Rental
Fiction shelves in the library.
See you in the library! ~Wendy

MUSIC IN THE HOUSE
Musicians seeking small venues are bringing their skills
down home as large venues worrying people in a time of
infection.
In early October, a Mangawhai house concert brought
Brazilian pandeiro
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandeiro>
star
Nanny Assis and Kiwi singer Maggie Gould
<https://
www.maggiegould.com/>
and Auckland jazz keyboardist
Stephen Small
<https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2013/cjc-presents-
stephen-small-group/auckland>
to an audience of 17 on Tara
Road.
Kitchen chairs, couches, stools, and cushions seated the
audience for the two-hour treat of samba, bossa nova and
jazz arrangements initiated on the Rio beach near where
Nanny grew up. Both Nanny and Maggie have recent
albums from which the night's repertoire largely came. The
trio's musical beauty and mutual pleasure was evident and
included a sustained pandeiro solo.
"He's outstanding," Nanny says of Stephen, after this
second set up together, hoping the three form a core for our
coming summer of closed borders.
Now looking forward to who The Gaya Tree persuades to
play next. Tickets were $40. Travel was minimal. Parking
was free. ~ HP.

1981 SWEETWATERS - NGARUAWAHIA
A large team of locals volunteered to begin an amazing fundraising journey to
pay for the Kaiwaka sports complex - 1981 was the first of the 3 Sweetwater's
music festivals, where they supplied
the security and ran a stall. This was
the only food outlet that was open 24
hours; the team worked 3 hours on and
3 hours off, feeding their team and
security workers and the huge crowd.
