KISS THE GROUND
Friday 26 February,
7.30pm
‘
"Narrated and featuring Woody
Harrelson, Kiss the Ground is an
inspiring and ground-breaking film
that reveals the first viable solution
to our climate crisis.
And reveals that, by regenerating
the
world’s
soils,
we
can
completely and rapidly stabilise
Earth’s
climate,
restore
lost
ecosystems and create abundant
food supplies. Using compelling
graphics and visuals, along with
striking NASA and NOAA footage,
the film artfully illustrates how, by
drawing down atmospheric carbon,
soil is the missing piece of the
climate puzzle.”
Author H. Jackson Brown Jr quipped,
‘Talent without discipline is like an
octopus on roller skates. There’s plenty
of movement, but you never know if it’s
going to be forward, backwards or
sideways.’
If you know you have talent and you’ve
seen a lot of motion but little concrete
results, you may lack self-discipline. Look at
last week's schedule.
How much of your time did you devote to
regular, disciplined activities? Did you do
anything to grow and improve yourself’? If
you have been putting these things off and
telling yourself that you’ll do them later,
you need to work on your self-discipline.
A nursery in Canada displays this sign on its
wall: ‘The best time to plant a tree is
twenty-five years ago...The second-best
time is today.’ So, starting today - discipline
yourself. Why? Because: (1) There’s a price
to pay to reach the next level. American
playwright Sidney Howard remarked: ‘One
half of knowing what you want is knowing
what you must give up before you get
it.’ (2) Be willing to start with small things.
At first your gains will be small, but they
will grow. The difference between the gold
medal winner and the other contestants is
often just hundredths of a second.
(3) Get into the right environment. Since
improvement always requires some degree
of risk and failure, pick a place where
growth
and
experimentation
are
encouraged.
(4) Believe that you can always do it better
Anything you’ve done in a particular way
for a given amount of time, can always be
done better.

When it comes
to joining together to make our
neighbourhoods
, our Aotearoa, and
our world better, one of the most
important things we can do is to find
out what we have in common. When
we discover what we have in common
and link-in with those people, it helps
us make connections and build lasting
relationships that feel just like sunshine.
MISSION
Kaiwaka Can's mission this year to do a
bit of sunbathing...better linking in and
connecting with other local community
groups, businesses, and residents so we
can all work together in our shared
vision for a more connected Kaiwaka.
Our collective voice must sing to the
tune of what the wider Kaiwaka
community wants always, and we've
taken some steps toward expanding our
reach.
We have a new Facebook page to
connect with a wider audience. On this
page we'll be posting project updates
and lots of pictures of our amazing
helpers in action. Search @kaiwakacan
if you'd like to keep in touch via
Facebook. And our friends over at
Mangawhai Focus have generously
given us a regular column to reach
more letterboxes and prospective
helpers - thanks Julia and Co., ka mau
te wehi!
The welcome sculptures are still very
much in the works with a few
compliance hoops to jump through first.
If you get a kick out of crossing items
off lists, then we'd love to hear from
you. Divide the task and multiply the
success – let's get these iconic artworks
over the line team.
Everyone is welcome at Kaiwaka Can.
If you'd like to get involved with a
community project and/or think you
have some skills that might help us
push one of our projects forward,
please get in touch.

Kaiwaka footbridges
get official go ahead -
and they’re on the
West!
Last
week
Council
approved
the
procurement plan for the
much-anticipated
Kaiwaka footbridges.
The very well attended community
engagement session on the bridges last
year confirmed overwhelming local
preference for both of the bridges being
on the western side of town linking
both sides via underpasses and through
to McClean Park.
At
last
week’s
meeting,
the
procurement plan was still silent
regarding which side of town the
bridges would be. I moved an alteration
to the wording to insert “on the western
side of State Highway One” for each
bridge, to ensure there could be no
variation from the assurances that had
been received. This motion was readily
seconded and ultimately carried.
The total allocated budget is $750,000.
Council will be using a fixed price
tender approach with a budget of
$600,000
for
the
design
and
construction of the bridges and related
footpaths. The first priority will be the
two bridges, followed by the underpass
of the northern road bridge to link to
Gibbons Rd and Kaiwaka Four Square.
The balance is comprised of $50,000
spent on investigation and concept
design, with the remainder as
contingency.
The scheduled programme from here
is - May 2021 Award contract
July 2021 Obtain all consents.
August 2021 Commence
construction
February 2022 Construction
complete
Thanks
to
everyone
who
has
contributed to this project from its
genesis as a concept, keeping the vision
on track as a western linkage, and now
through to implementation becoming a
reality.

AIRBRUSH
Mangawhai Artists Gallery from
11th - 24th March
.
This exhibition features artwork from and Elena
Nikolaeva and Colin Unkovich.
Elena Nikolaeva considers herself to be an
experimenter, blending, mixing, transforming
elements of the traditional arts with non-artistic
materials, creating quirky mixed media sculptures
and 2D wall pieces .For more information, please

Elena’s

Born and bred in Bream Bay, Colin Unkovich grew
up on the land. He is an outdoors person and as a
result looks to the natural world for his muse. He
has been working as a full-time artist for the last 15
years but airbrushing for over 40 and his paintings
hang in collections around the globe. Colin’s new
body of work features a range of seascapes and
surrealist paintings inspired by the natural
environment around him - example pictured right.
Using the airbrush is a meticulous and slow task but
Colin feels the end result is worth all the time.
This promises to be an exciting and varied
exhibition and MAI looks forward to hosting them
from 6pm on 11th March at 45 Moir St,
Mangawhai. See mangawhaiartists.co.nz for more
information. Gallery open from 10am – 3pm daily.

SCHOOL PICNIC
On Friday the 5th of February the whole of
Kaiwaka School spent the day at the
Mangawhai Estuary. This was a chance for
our new whanau to meet with existing
whanau in a casual atmosphere. The
children enjoyed swimming, making
sandcastles and playing beach games. A
great day!
SCHOOL LUNCHES
This year the school has taken up the
opportunity for students to have a free
lunch each day. This initiative is funded by
the Ministry of Education. Libelle is the
company supplying our lunches. They
follow the healthy guidelines given by the
MoE. The students are enjoying trying the
new, healthy food.
DISCOVERY TIME
At Kaiwaka School the students have the
chance to decide on their own learning
during Discovery Time. This week Josie learnt to knit and made a cloth that she
can use to clean up the breakfast dishes at school. With a volunteer's support,
Josie runs the breakfast club every morning.

From Dirk Smyth, Acting Principal’s Notes
We have now completed our first full week of school. I have been very impressed
with the attitude of our students as they have settled into their routines and
engaged themselves with their learning. We have a great team of teachers and
staff on board and I am excited about the year ahead.
COVID 19: We were all relieved to return to level 1 on Thursday, but we are
continuing with our contingency planning in case of a future lockdown.
Swimming Gala: This was an amazing, well-organised event and the weather
couldn’t have been better. There was plenty of shade and our students got the
important message of being sun smart throughout the day. It was wonderful
seeing so many students getting into the pool and giving it a go. Our top
swimmers excelled, and four records were broken. Grace Kemp broke the
senior girls 25m freestyle while Sonya Steiner broke the junior girls 25m
backstroke. Noah Martin broke two records - the junior boys 25m
breaststroke and 25m backstroke. Well done, and well done to Whatua for
winning the first inter-iwi event of the year.
Uniform: I am pleased to see the overwhelming majority of students wearing the
correct uniform each day.
Athletics: Please join us for our 56th annual athletics day gala on Friday. This
promises to be another exciting, well organised event.
SENIORS/COMMUNITY
LUNCH
The first community lunch of the year
was a great success with a happy group
enjoying a delicious roast lamb meal.
Remember if you haven’t been before
and would like to come along, call us at
the Community House so we know how
many to cater for, 09 431 9080.
COME SHOPPING WITH US
Don’t forget if you need anything in
Whangarei, we have our minibus going
twice a month. It’s totally free! And it
leaves the Retirement Village at 9.30am
on the second Tuesday and fourth
Wednesday of every month. You might
have grocery shopping to do – at any of
the big supermarkets there, or those
little jobs like a birthday present,
haircut, a new pair of shoes, etc. You
can spend at least 3 to 4 hours in town.
When not on a shopping trip our
minibus is available for hire at $40 per
day plus diesel. Just come into the
Community House to enquire, read and
sign the vehicle policy and let us have a
copy of your driver’s licence to arrange
your hire.
THANK YOU
Once again, we say thank you for even
more generous donations to the agency;
we are so pleased to be able to provide
better support to those in need.

Our Rotarians have been able to start
the year in a positive manner and have
some great ideas for the next twelve
months.
SAILING GROUP
We are planning on setting up a sailing
group in Mangawhai for youngsters.
Already one of our Rotarians has
purchased a yacht (a 9ft 6in Des
Townson designed Starling.) He is
working on sprucing this up and it is
hoped that this will be the first of
several that will enable us to build a
sailing group that will operate in the
East. We will be working with the
Mangawhai Fishing and Boating club.
So, watch this space.
CYCLE TRACK
We had hoped to have been able to start
the cycle track at the Maungaturoto
Primary school by now but there has
been a delay with the replacing of the
driveway into the back of the school.
Once this is in place, we can decide
what our next steps will be. We are
doing this in conjunction with the
parents and Year 6 students from last
year.
“BASH A BOMB”
A number of us were able to help at the
Paparoa
Show
(North
Kaipara
Agricultural Association). We did try to
promote a different activity - “Bash a
Bomb” which appeared to be enjoyed
by all who participated. It is being able
to be involved in a show like this that
we are really grateful that we can still
enjoy both indoor and outdoor activities
with a great deal of relative freedom in
comparison to other parts of the world.
PIROA FALLS TRACK
It was a pity that we had not been able
to replace the washed-out section of the
track to the Piroa Falls waterfall in time
for the holidays, but it is essential that
we complete this task in a manner that
will provide long-lasting benefits. We
believe we now have a plan in place
which we will endeavour to implement
early in March. It will be great to have
that area more accessible to all once
more.
DRIVER MENTORING
As mentioned last month, our Driver
Mentoring scheme is now under the
umbrella of People Potential in
Whangarei (see separate advertisement
on page 3). Our mentors look forward
to working with this organisation. Just a
reminder though. It is an expectation
that between obtaining the Learner’s
and Restricted licence, people need to
have completed approximately 120
hours of driving. The 12 free lessons
our volunteer mentors give would be
about ¼ of this time. We have noticed
that the trainees who have been able to
do a substantial amount of driving
between the sessions we provide are
able to approach their test in a much
more positive and relaxed manner.
BECOME A ROTARIAN
If you would like to become involved
with our group, please don’t hesitate to
ask any Rotarian about what is
involved. Attendance is much more
flexible than it used to be, but we really
enjoy working on projects that will
benefit our community.
We meet on Tuesdays at 6pm in the
Maungaturoto Centennial Hall, View
Street, Maungaturoto

COVID COMICS:
2019: Stay away from negative people. 2020: Stay away from positive people.
The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house & their kids are
yelling at them to stay indoors!
Does anyone know if we can take showers yet or should we just keep washing our hands?
This virus has done what no woman has been able to do. Cancel sports, shut down all bars &
keep men at home!
Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go up to a bank teller wearing a mask &
ask for money.

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
COVID-19 ALERT LEVELS
Well, that was a bit of 'fun' last week, wasn't it?! Not at all,
sadly. Fortunately, by the time the library was due to open
on that first day of the changed levels, the mess of what
Alert Level we were really in was sorted, so it didn't affect
our hours at all. We did open early on that Monday so
anyone passing by could come in and stock up on books in
case we did go into lockdown, and it was well worth doing
that.
HOW MANY BOOKS?
Remember that children can borrow up to 10 items on their
library cards, and adults can borrow up to 40 items, so you
can think ahead and borrow more items if you think you
might not be able to get here for a while. And if the worst
happened and we went into lockdown again, we'd extend the
due dates on any items currently on issue, so they won't go
overdue at a time when you're meant to be staying at home
as much as possible.
DIGITAL COLLECTIONS
Also, you always have access to our digital collections via
your library card. Go to Enterprise* to get started and come
into the library for assistance if you need it. You'll find
eBooks, audiobooks, magazines and newspapers at your
fingertips in these collections.
QR CODE
We are going to continue offering a manual check-in method
as well as the QR code posters but are changing to
individual slips of paper instead of one sheet for the entire
day to help with privacy issues.
They will still be destroyed
when no longer needed.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read the first two
books in a new detective thriller
series.
Under the Ice
and
The
Scorched Earth
by Rachael
Blok. Welcome to the world of
DCI Maarten Jansen, a Dutch
policeman living in England
with his wife and two small
daughters. In the first book, a
woman seems to be caught up in
the mystery of a young girl
found in an ice-covered lake. Is
she the murderer? How is it that she keeps turning up with
evidence the police had missed in their searches? I found
both books to be engaging and entertaining, and I'm looking
forward to the third installment due out later this year - it's
already ordered for the library. These books are currently on
the Rental Fiction shelves in the library.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
