KAIWAKA CHECKERS TO THE FORE
CHECKER OF THE YEAR
On July 27th, Four Square Kaiwaka attended the Northland round of the Foodstuffs Checker of the Year competition.
Checker of the Year is a unique checkout competition that involves the Pak N Save, New World and Four Square brand
and has been running for over 70 years. Checkout operators compete against each other in a staged shopping situation.
Judges score the operators on factors such as speed, accuracy, presentation and customer service. Those competing for Four
Square Kaiwaka were Jean McLeish, Lish Reynolds, Yvonne Smith, Brenda Ferguson and Caleesto Mills. Although the
podium places were made up of Pak N Save and New World operators from around the Northland region, all the girls did
amazingly well – for most it was their first time competing as well! And to cap the night off our store won “Best Dressed”
as ‘Charlie’s Angels’ and enjoyed a feed at Maccas to celebrate on the way home!
AND THE FUN GOES ON: RENOVATIONS
Along with the council roadwork changes within and around Kaiwaka, we have also been making
a few changes here at Four Square Kaiwaka which you may have seen or even heard (sorry about
the loud noises at times!). The changes that are currently underway - or are to come, have
community and its people in mind. Whether it be customer focused with an expanded range of
chilled, frozen, meat, seafood and produce - or staff focused with a streamlined storeroom and
larger storage spaces. Our mission at Four Square Kaiwaka is to help our Kaiwaka community get
more out of life. We’re confident the changes in store will go some way toward us achieving that
mission. Thanks in advance for your patience whilst the changes play out.

Maia Fairburn has been selected for the NZ U16 Girls (Black) Tag Football

Sam (Colin Firth) and Tusker
(Stanley Tucci), partners of twenty
years, are travelling across England
in their old campervan visiting

more important than ever until
secret plans test their love like never
before.
Conquering your toughest enemy – yourself!
Richard C. Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, said: ‘Want
to be a winner? Compete against yourself, not somebody else…Outrunning your
rival doesn’t mean you ran your best race. You can win over another and still not
fulfil your potential…To be your best, you must compete with yourself. It’s life’s
biggest contest. A loser is a winner – however many his losses – if he conquers
himself.
A winner is a loser – however many his victories – if he loses the battle with
himself. Alexander the Great conquered the world and cursed his own lack of
self-control.
Victory over others may in fact be the very thing that contributes to the winner’s
failure to conquer self. Winning makes him proud, arrogant, independent,
thoughtless – and sometimes cruel.
To put it another way, it isn’t what happens to you that makes the difference, but
how you handle it .’

WOMENS SECTION
There was a good attendance at
the meeting on Thursday 22nd
July.
A moments silence was observed
for former member Pat Judd and
Whangarei Member Trudy Beamish
who both passed away recently. Pat was
a loved and respected member who was
always there to lend a hand and we
missed her when she and her husband
(now deceased) had to shift to Orewa
for health reasons.
Trudy, known to some as Gertie was an
ex Maungaturoto member and we
always included her in the invite to
Whangarei to attend our Birthdays
which she did.
We have an invite to attend Franklins
76th Birthday on 13th September at 11
a.m. and an invite to Waipu's mid-
winter luncheon on 23rd September
11.30 a.m.
A trip is being planned to Ryder's in
Avondale about October to have a roast
dinner followed by a movie of our
choice and the Ryder family also have a
collection of memorabilia and antiques
to view, the film we will attend will be
chosen at our next meeting.
Pamela Truscott had a very important
Birthday this month congratulations on
your 85th Birthday Pamela.
The 1st prize in the raffle was won by
June Wilson and second prize went to
Shirley De Vries.
Margaret Haverfield gave a very
interesting talk on her time in the
Services. She joined in1959 and was
sent to Airfields to do Square Bashing
(learning to march). Living in Hong
Kong mosquitoes were a problem, so
she set herself up with a fan and
covered herself completely in a blanket.
One of the first things they were issued
with was a wooden coffin and they had
to keep their clothes and belongings in
it. Margaret became a registered Nurse
after 2 years, and spent 5 years on
Princes and 4 Royal Navy.
NEXT MEETING:
The next meeting is Thursday 26th
August at 1.15 p.m.
Our speaker for August is Jon,
president of the Mangawhai Surf Club.
We are looking forward to hearing from
Jon.
Hostesses are Ann and Trish

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
There hasn’t been anything
too dramatic to report this
month.
We are 2 thirds of the way through winter
but hold on folks, summer will be here
before we know it. July
seemed to me to
be a very wet and cold month but when
I added up the days of rain and the
amount of rain, it wasn’t as bad as I
thought. Maybe it just seemed that way
as our household was laid up for 4
weeks of the month with this nasty head
cold/ flu/cough, virus that is attacking
the district.
Our lawn is extremely wet in places,
and I can’t get the lawn mower near it
for fear of getting stuck.
At our place we recorded rain or drizzle
over 17 days in July, with a total of
160ml.
Last year we recorded 305.5ml.
The year of 2013, for July, we only
recorded 45.5ml. Quite a contrast.
Stay well and keep warm everyone,
Karen
New Zealand has
just experienced
its warmest June
and July since
records began in 1909 and - with one
month to go - is on track for its second
successive warmest winter on record.
NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll says,
"There have been a number of factors
which have contributed to the warmer
temperatures. Air pressure has been
higher than normal in the east so far
this winter which has brought more
north-easterly winds to New Zealand
bringing warmer air from the sub-
tropics. With the June and July
temperatures tracking so far above
average, this winter had a firm lead on
last year’s figures. This is consistent
with
our
expectations.
In
the
background, the long-term tailwind of
climate change continues to churn. Of
the seven warmest June and Julys, six
have occurred since 2000. For the year
to the end of July 2021 ranks as the
sixth warmest on record.
NEIGHBOURS
How important they are in our lives
whether they live next door
or along the lane
they become part of our 'family
and can keep us sane.
To be kind to each other
as directed by our mothers
and are an inspiration to us each day
be there for each other in times
of need, sorrow, celebration,
brings us comfort for tomorrow
and nourishes our Nation.

LIBBY JONES –
Member Northland District Health Board
KAIWAKA CAN
We've been hibernating, how about you?
It feels good to pause, recharge, and reflect on what has been
achieved so far this year. The next stage of works transforming McClean Park
will kick off as soon as the weather settles, and the ground is dry enough. Due to
the great turn out at our first working bee, a massive amount of progress was
made in just two hours, so keep an eye out for updates on our Facebook page if
you'd like to get involved.
Looking
beyond
McClean
Park's
transformation
and
riverbank restoration, we've got
a massive opportunity to work
towards improving the health of
our precious Kaipara harbour at
our fingertips.
The
Kaipara
Moana
Remediation
Project
has
allocated a significant amount of
money to the Kaipara District
for riparian planting and we're
working on getting our hands on
some of it. Native
trees and plants grown
from
locally
eco-
sourced plant material
will be used for
riparian
plantings
along waterways and
wetlands,
reducing
sediment
run
off,
reducing
nitrogen
levels and boosting
‘swimmability’
and
shellfish health.

New developments at our local
hospitals.
One of the objectives of the board is to
get more services closer to home, which
saves Northlanders having to travel out
of the area and creates a better all-round
service locally. Northland is the fastest
growing region in New Zealand, so it is
great when we can provide our own
specialist services and improve services
locally for patients.
Some of the particular challenges of our
current hospital in Whangarei are being
addressed, while we wait for the new
hospital that we are planning for.
Having two new extra theatres now
open means that more surgical
procedures can be delivered, and
procedures are less likely to be
cancelled as a result of accidents and
other acute emergencies.
The new cardiac catheter laboratory has
now opened which has cleared our
waitlist for outpatient angiography tests
for heart problems, which were
previously only available in Auckland.
This is the first stage, and
other cardiac procedures
will be added over the
year.
An Assessment Unit has
been created next to the
Emergency Department to
ease the flow on ED. It is currently only
open during the day but has already
saved many unnecessary admissions to
hospital. Patients can now get the tests
they need and have supports put in
place without having to be admitted
overnight. Waiting times remain a
challenge at ED and this will start to
make a difference with more space and
more staff.
The new endoscopy suite also at
Whangarei Hospital has improved our
waitlist for colonoscopy and other
procedures as well.
Other improvements are also being
made at the regional hospitals, so rural
patients can have more services closer
to their homes too.
Stay well, mauri ora, Libby

FOUR SQUARE KAIWAKA CHECKERS
THE ST.PAUL’S CHURCH BELL
When and where did the bell for St. Paul’s Church, Kaiwaka come
from?
Some background from ‘St. Paul’s
Church, Kaiwaka – The First Fifty
Years (1935 – 1985)’, compiled by
APB Watson:
“St.
Paul’s
Church
Site
and
Construction
The section on which St. Paul’s is built
is central and elevated. It was the gift of
Mr FJ Jaques in 1931, and was part of
Allotments 38 and 200, 32.8 perches, or
1/5th acre. It was officially acquired on
13th November 1935. It was levelled by
Logan Balderston, father of Laurie,
using horses and scoop.
The builder of St. Paul’s was Mr Tom
Hutchinson who built many churches in
the north including the William Leslie
Memorial.
The timber, largely rimu, was railed
from West's mill in Helensville, and
was carted free of charge by Clarrie
Hall. Edward Coates gave the totara blocks.
Interest was widespread and was maintained by regular meetings called by
Archie Bull and held for the most part in the new public hall [on the eastern
boundary of the primary school].
The 32ft by 20ft rimu-lined building had an 8ft square bell tower porch with
squat, pointed, 4-sided shingle roof, and double doors and wooden steps giving
access at the west end. The chancel extended 8ft from the 24ft nave and the steep
pitched reef was supported by three wooden trusses with steel tie rods. The gable-
roofed vestry, 7ft square, led off from the chancel on the north side.”….
The Rev. Harvey Smith and his wife
Christine have arrived to live in
Mangawhai for the next few months.
Harvey will be looking after all the
Anglican Churches from Wellsford to
the
Brynderwyns
and
from
Whakapirau to Mangawhai Heads.
Given his age (old) he has been the
Priest in many different churches
including time in England (Basildon,
Shepherd’s Bush and Belmont) as
well as Canberra in Australia where
he was a Minister of the Word in a Uniting Church. Given that he was brought up
in Taranaki he is keen on rugby along with any sport involving a ball and does
not involve sitting down going backwards.
Christine was the inaugural Manager of Alumni Relations at two Universities
(Auckland and the Australian National University) and before that apart from
being wife and mother she found time to write two bread books both of which
sold well.
This is a new part of the world to them and to date it has been marvellous.

THE COVID JAB ~ Hugh P
Many
in
the
Kaiwaka area in
my age group will
now have had at
least one Covid-
19 jab judging
from the figures
for Northland.
In fact, Northland
has possibly been
doing the best in
securing
protection
for
vulnerable people.
My personal reluctance for having jabs to support natural
immunity were overcome after seeing how a mutating virus
could wreak havoc were entering new population groups. I
hadn’t been persuaded by the cascade of conspiracy theories
that tied the infection’s spread to eugenics or politics, even
though I avoid the flu jab.
A friend down south said Covid appointments were on offer
to allcomers online and a quick call secured one at noon in
Whangarei on July 26. There were plenty of cars and plenty
of parks at Okara Park and waiting for the jab was perhaps
five minutes.
Going to get it was the easy part.
Faces of staff were friendly, Anna the registered nurse
settled me and fed the needle, then I had 20 minutes reading
a paper side by side with another 30 or so folk. The waiting
time is mandated in case there are allergic reactions.
While many attending were seniors (I heard one say "83")
our waiting group covered the adult age range, including one
young policewoman.
Perhaps because I am registered with an Auckland GP/
public health organisation {PHO] I hadn’t heard from them,
although coincidentally did get a call offering it on my way
home. I also photographed a youngster going to the Otaika
pharmacy covid clinic (pictured).
When headlines on August 6 highlight the confusions and
inequalities folk round the world are facing with this
mutating disease - "WHO Calls for Moratorium on Third
Doses Amid Stark Global Vaccine Inequity" - "Amid
Soaring Profits, Moderna and Pfizer to Raise Covid-19
Vaccine Prices" - "Over Half of China’s Provinces Log New
Covid Cases" - "Illinois Issues Mask Mandate for Schools;
Arkansas Governor Regrets Signing Anti-Mask Bill" - I am
fortunate to be lined up by the public service for my second
jab to be given for free eight weeks after the first.
This weekend our Ministry of Health (MoH) advised over
2.06 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccine were given to
11.59pm on 4 August and that day’s 45,802 jabs (32,230
first doses and 12,852 second doses) were a record daily
total.
"More than 115,000 Māori have
received their first vaccination. Of
these, around 73,000 have also had their
second vaccinations.
"More than 78,600 doses have been
administered to Pacific peoples. Of
these, almost 50,000 have also received
their second doses," the MoH
announced.
