Worry

BRING THE BEST OUT IN OTHERS
The ability to bring out the best in others is important for two reasons. First,
we usually see in people what we expect to see. Second, they generally rise to
level of expectation.
Dr John Maxwell writes: ‘I've never known a positive person yet who didn't
love people and try to see the best in them. And one of the most effective ways to help
you see the best in others is to do what I call putting a “10” on people’s heads. Here’s
what I mean: We all have expectations of others, but we can choose whether those
expectations are positive or negative. We can think that others are worthless or
wonderful. When we make the decision to expect the best and actually look for the good
instead of the bad, we’re seeing them as a “10.’”
When you have faith in someone, you give them an incredible gift, maybe the best gift
you can give another person. Give them money, and they may soon have spent it. Give
them resources, and they may not use them to the greatest
advantage. Give them help, and within a short period of time, chances are that they’ll
find themselves back where they started. But demonstrate faith in them, and they
become confident, invigorated, self-reliant, and motivated to obtain the skills they need
to succeed on their own. Then later if you do share money, resources and other kinds of
help, they're better equipped to use them to build a better future. Ref. Word For Today

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL
To the Otamatea Community,
The Otamatea Board of Trustees, after a lengthy and
extremely robust process, have completed the long-
anticipated appointment of a permanent principal.
I would like to thank David Ellery, of The Education Group,
for his advice and guidance throughout this process. I would
also like to thank the Board of Trustees and Nikki Donaldson
for their dedication and professionalism over the many hours
working through the appointment process. Otamatea High
School was extremely fortunate to have such a high calibre of
candidates applying for the position and I would like to thank them all for their
applications.
The Board would like to congratulate the successful candidate and
our new
Principal, Dirk Smyth, pictured above.
We look forward to an exciting
future for our school and community with Dirk at the helm.
Dirk is currently on sabbatical for Term 3, and he will continue with this leave.
Paul Chambers will continue as Acting Principal until Term 4 when we will
welcome Dirk back to the school in his new role.

MANGAWHAI
SATELLITE
CLUB
The Satellite club at Mangawhai is
going ahead very well. They have been
able to get two substantial grants which
will enable them to purchase some
more optimist boats and lifejackets as
well as an inflatable safety boat with
outboard. (They are waiting for the
latter to come into the country but
hopefully it will be on hand in
September.) They have also got
permission from the Boating and
Fishing club to have a storage
container on their site which will make
for ease of access.
NIKAU GROVE,
We were able to have a working bee at
Nikau Grove, Whaka Street. You can
now see the entrance way much more
clearly and we are grateful to the
neighbours who keep the path at the
entrance mown. We were going to
clean the sign but decided that we liked
its rustic appeal so decided instead to
paint the lettering. We plan to add a
Rotary sign to it. After the sign was
installed, we went for a walk around
the path, pulling out weeds on the way.
Apart from one large log that has
toppled over, the pathway is in good
condition. The native bush is a lovely
spot to wander through and at times
you can hear the tuis and other birds
calling.
TIRITIRI MATANGI
A number of Rotarians and friends
took a trip (approx. 20 mins) from Gulf
Harbour to Tiritiri Matangi. The
weather was perfect and though the
wind was cool, most of the paths were
through the bush so we were protected
from it. Stella had taken a number of
senior students to plant native trees on
the island some time ago.
It is amazing how, over 40 years, what
was farmland is now native bush. As
most of the native birds present – tuis,
stitchbirds and bellbirds – are nectar
feeders (and there are no flowers at the
moment), feeding stations
have been set up, courtesy of
Chelsea Sugar Works. These
stations come in two sizes – the larger
ones for the tuis and the smaller cages
with appropriately sized holes for the
smaller birds. Another interesting
addition was a weta motel. These had
been placed on tree trunks and
provided
chambers
for
wetas,
centipedes and cockroaches to shelter.
By the lighthouse there were five
kakapo, some of whom were bred on
the island. They are going to be
relocated to another safe destination in
the Gulf. We are fortunate to have such
a dedicated group of volunteers who
maintain this facility and ensure that
limit the chance that prohibited
creatures can make landfall.
MENTAL HEALTH SPEAKER
We have only had one speaker in the
past month, and she was most
interesting, providing an insight to the
work undertaken by the Northland
DHB in the Mental Health area, with
programmes run in homes and in
Ngawha prison as well as in prisons on
the East Coast.
If you would like to join us at any time,
please call Eileen on 021 142 0357.
You may even be able to help us with
our planned working bees.

CLOSED DURING LOCKDOWN
Once again, we find ourselves in
lockdown and the library is closed. As
I type this report, the PM is making the
Friday afternoon announcement that
we will stay in Level 4 until at least
Tuesday - the date of this paper. The
library will remain closed until we

KEEP YOUR LIBRARY BOOKS
AT HOME FOR NOW
Meanwhile, please keep hold of any
library items you have. Due dates have
been extended on all issued items, and
will continue to be extended until we
are in Level 2. This should mean that
there will be no overdue fees charged
on DVDs and BluRays due back
during lockdown (we don't charge
overdue fees on books), but if anything
slips through the cracks, I will cancel
any fees incurred because of this.
