KAIWAKA PLAYCENTRE DIGS IN!
In these difficult times, our tamariki who attend Kaiwaka Playcentre and Ngā Tupuranga o ngā Puna Reo ki Kaiwaka
were all given a big hug by our local community in the second stage of the playground upgrade.
For this we are very grateful, and we are reminded of how much we can achieve when we work together.
First, a huge thanks to Ashwood Construction for the
immense efforts to build the replacement retaining wall and
remove excess soil in such a short time.
Second, recognition needs to go to the crews from Kaiwaka
Tulip Hire and Barlow Contractors for going way beyond the
call of duty to assist with the removal of excess old mulch
and putting the new Cushionfall mulch in place - brought in
by Parker Lime from the suppliers on short notice!
Thank you also to the financial contributors who helped
make this happen – Kaipara District Council, Playcentre
Aotearoa, and our local Ngā Tupuranga o ngā Puna Reo ki
Kaiwaka.
And finally, thanks to the mums and dads who rolled up their
sleeves to dig out mulch and clean things up at the end.
We look forward to sharing the next stage of our upgrade
journey with you, and to welcoming any newbies wanting to
join our centre through the door!
We are still in the progress of
finishing the upgrades. Once done,
we are going to do a public
opening/blessing in the New Year.
Kaiwaka Playcentre session times:
8.45-12.45 on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday - according to the
school terms.

Kaiwaka Physio- a regular
column on all thing’s physio and
fitness:
Last time I wrote about how much
exercise is recommended for adults and
what that looks like in terms of
intensity and hours per week. This
week I am going to give you some
ideas on how to increase your activity
levels.
For many of us nothing beats having
to be at a certain time and place with
someone telling us what to do!
There’s quite a bit going on in Kaiwaka
in terms of organised exercise although
some of this has been curtailed due to
covid restrictions:
The Kaiwaka Sports Association has
several clubs including badminton,
squash, tennis, fitness centre and
Kempo. Contact numbers are in the
Bugle.
There’s also Pilates at Hakaru and
Kaiwaka.
If you fancy something a bit higher
intensity, come along to Kaiwaka
Community Fitness Sessions on
Wednesday
evenings.
They
are
sponsored by Kaiwaka 4 square and are
free! There are also fitness sessions on
Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the
Kaiwaka sports fields.
A bit further afield, Maungaturoto
offers bowls and yoga and Mangawhai
also has yoga, Pilates and various
fitness classes.
If you aren’t one for joining, there are
plenty of other ideas. Simply walking
is a great way to start. We are
surrounded by countryside but often
can’t access it and walking on rural
roads is dangerous and dusty. That’s
where the Fitness Trail at the KSA
comes in! It’s a simple concrete track
about 440m round one of
the rugby pitches. It’s
well used by walkers, runners and kids
on wheels.
Set yourself a target of how many
circuits you can complete. Gradually
build up the reps. When it’s getting
easy, it’s important to change the
routine.
Simply
changing
from
clockwise to anti-clockwise will subtly
work different muscles. Try doing
intervals of fast and slow i.e., 50m fast,
50m slow. Carry a backpack with some
weights in it. Make use of some of the
fitness machines round the track.
Recruit a friend to meet you for a bit of
motivation.
Stuck at home with young kids?
Put some music on and dance, play tag,
soccer or touch. There are, of course, a
huge variety of YouTube fitness
channels you can follow in the comfort
of your own home.
Working in a sedentary job?
Try walking and
talking while you
are on the phone,
have a lunchtime
walk or get up
early to have a
morning walk.
One
of
my
patients has got
me
into
hula
hooping! Its great
fun and something
the whole family
can
try
and
quickly gets the
heart
rate
up.
Entertain the neighbours by trying it
out on the deck!
Gardening also keeps us fit with time
spent on your feet and also resistance
work i.e., lifting, pulling and pushing. I
will talk more about gardening next
time. ~ Amy
School Swimming Pool
Good News! The pool is now open to the public outside of school hours.
If you would like a key come up to the Kaiwaka School office and see Heather.
The keys are $60 for the season which usually goes up to Easter but is
dependent on temperatures.
The pool contract form can be downloaded from the school Facebook page or
you can fill it in at the office. Happy swimming!
School Sports
There has been lots happening with regards to sports. We have athletics training,
cricket and tennis happening at the moment. As well as the swimming pool
opening this week for swimming during school time.
Dress Up Day
This week would have been our annual Scholastic Book Fair, culminating in the
'Dress Up as Your Favourite Book Character Day.' Sadly, with Covid
restrictions, we have had to postpone the Book Fair part, but will proceed with
the Dress Up Day pn Thursday 2nd December ... what book characters will we
see this year?

An invitation to

reimagine the local libraries.
Kaipara District Libraries are planning for the future and
have offered an invitation to help them reimagine the local
libraries. If you don't already use Kaipara Libraries, they

Kaipara District library users, they want to hear from you
too!
Libraries have changed
Libraries are still focused on reading, literacy, and
information. But in the last 20 - 30 years they have
developed their roles around learning and community-
making, particularly through activities and programmes,
and have built a new emphasis on the digital world and
helping people
to work within
it.

Hullo everyone we are back!!
After missing two months
meetings it was good to catch up
with most of our members again

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
Hello fellow Kaiwaka
residents,
October has been a wet but mostly
warm month. I have got a bit of a tan
going on, on my arms. It is time to
start slip, slap and slopping with the
sunscreen.
On the 8th of October we got 52ml of
rain then on the 14th we got 22ml then
it settled down for a few days but still
getting occasional showers. Between
the 22nd and the 29th we got 152ml. I
tell you folks I have had quite enough
of the wet stuff.
Our total rainfall for October
this year was a massive 215.5ml
compared to 49ml last year.
Needless to say, the Brynderwyn
waterfall is flowing beautifully.
The least rainfall I have recorded at
our place for October was in 2010 and
2013 when we got a mere 12ml in both
years.
I read the other day where we are to
expect a La Nina weather pattern this
summer, which means moist, rainy
conditions to North-eastern areas
(that’s us) of the North Island and
reduced rainfall to the Western South
Island.
Warmer
than
average
temperatures can also occur. Beauty,
just what I didn’t want to hear. I don’t
mind the heat but not so keen on the
mugginess.
I hope this finds you all well. Cheers,
you will hear from me again next
month, Karen
NIWA Highlights of October 2021:
5th warmest October on record
Weather
was
changeable
but
consistent with a developing La Niña

Rainfall was well above normal for
Auckland and Northland, with some
areas experiencing record high levels.

DOWN AT THE BORDERLINE ~
from HP
For the record
, my foray this month into the “super city” to visit the dentist
expressed the immense effort we make socially to contain the covid-19 infection
and protect the vulnerable.
Going south double-vaxed with a covid test paper from Three Furlongs, I was
waved quickly through.
Things were pretty normal on The
Shore. There was little parking
available. People were mostly
masked. The dentist was switching
career because of the risks. Retail
folk, he said, were up in arms.
Coming back that day there was a
camera team from some channel
near the Tomarata turnoff, a lot
more action by the 30 or so at the
checkpoint
and
northbound cars pulled
over. I was asked to
park so they could
check my Furs paper,
licence and number
plate. While I was
waved on after a few
minutes, others were
getting grumpy.

SODDEN PHONE MESSAGES
& THE BUGS BEHIND THEM
Every now and then surprise messages show up. They were coming by email {or
whatever} - and now they’re on my mobile number.
1: “"Greetings, your order was delivered on 2021/11/08 to our drop-off address.
Confirm your pick-up here: http://iguzim.com/n17ZEga "
2: the day after: “Customs duty is still pending. Please solve the problem or we
will sent your order back to the sender address: http://ecikiy.com/mT7wbqr "
Nice little ‘one-two’.
Thing is I didn’t order. Or involve Customs. And the source changed mood
and its Australia-based number - {look the area code up yourself-https://
www.answers.com › Q ›
Telephone country code +61 is Australia, and numbers beginning with +61 4 are
mobiles. However, it is incorrect to refer to "country code +614"; the correct
country code is just +61}—plus slipped in other ways.
So, in short: "Click link to download a rort."
And some rank money-making above rorting
others, so automate it for a kid to do in a few
minutes, teaching laziness instead of value of
effort. And no doubt relishing the division
they generate. Poor, eh?
My take: ‘don’t respond, just speak kindly
with whom you have to, and ignore
shysters’. ~ HP

ONERIRI GARDENER
SWEET PEAS:
Heavy with scent. We've had them in our home
gardens for centuries. Even our grandmothers thought them a
nostalgic flower. Really easy to grow, but don't get ahead of yourself.
They need at least 12 hours of light a day to flower. Before that all
you will get is lots of leaves. Caution, even though they look good enough to
eat, unlike all other peas they are toxic. Beauty
comes with a price.
SALSIFY: This was a good save. I bought the
seeds from kings as a root vegetable. Always eager
for new veg. I'm glad to know salsify is edible if
I'm ever that hungry. I abandoned the plants and
then on tall stems these flowers up to 4cm across.
The seed heads are lovely too. Like giant
dandelions. That was 3 years ago. They have self
sown and are an annual. I haven't been reduced to
ripping them out and cursing. In fact I'm still
collecting seed and scattering it in the odd corner.
RED
SOLDIER
POPPIES: A WWI
remembrance.
They've been self
sowing with a little
help from my seed
collecting. I hope I
still have some on
November
11th.

GATHERING OF STORIES
This year as part of the White Ribbon Campaign we want to collect
stories of change to help shine a light on what works in violence
prevention in our communities. We know there are many people
who have really inspiring stories of change and redemption that
could help people who are currently trapped in abusive, violent and
unhealthy relationships. We want to know how you coped, where you got the
support, and the tools that helped to change your situation. We want to hear
from both former perpetrators and survivors.
We want to make it as easy as possible to take part, so there are a range of ways
you can get involved and share your story. You can use Messenger on Facebook
to share your story with us privately, either in text or by video. You can post to
your own Facebook page and use the hashtag #WRstoriesofchange or
#ShineALight. You can always send us your story by email to
contact@whiteribbon.org.nz
We want to share your stories
with the wider community so,
however you get in touch,
please tell us whether you give
permission for your story to be
shared, and if so, whether you
are happy for your name to be
used, or whether you would
prefer to be anonymous. Either
is absolutely fine and we
realise it is sometimes not safe
or appropriate to provide your
details. Please share this
invitation with people you
know who might want to take part. As always, we are so grateful to the White
Ribbon community for standing up, speaking out and acting to prevent violence.
It really does make a difference.

Last Thursday, 11 November, the Roadley family held their third Beltex ram
sale. These are 3/4 bred Beltex rams to be used as terminal sires for mating with
ewes to produce lambs for meat.
The Beltex is a double-muscled Texel sheep which arrived in the United
Kingdom from Belgium in 1989. They first arrived in New Zealand in 2017.

CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS
That time is rapidly approaching! The library will be closed
from 2pm Thursday 23 December 2021 until 10am
Wednesday 5 January 2022. Please mark your calendars if
that's going to affect you, so you can plan ahead. Stock up
on your Christmas reading before Christmas Eve, or you
can use the digital library that is open 24 hours a day 7 days
a week - see the eResources section at Enterprise* for
details if you're new to it.
PAINTING
Now that the weather is improving, we will be having the
library building painted. I don't have a start date for it yet
but keep your eyes open for it getting under way. Many
thanks to Kaipara District Council for providing the
funding, and to Coast to Coast Painters who will be doing
the job.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read The Silence of Snow by Eileen
Merriman. It's a "
compelling medical novel about facing one’s
demons, self-prescribing and finding the strength to carry on, even
when it seems that all is lost. Anaesthetic Fellow Rory McBride is
adrift. Since a routine procedure went horribly wrong, he has been
plagued by sleeplessness, flashbacks and escalating panic attacks. Jodi
Waterstone has recently started work as a first-year doctor at the same
hospital, and the night shifts, impossible workload and endless hours
on duty are taking a toll. Both are trying to stay in control of their
lives, but Rory starts to self-medicate with sleeping pills and sedatives
to help him get through the nights . . . and the days. Before long, the
sedatives aren’t enough. Can Jodi save him from himself?"
Merriman is better known for her titles aimed at junior
readers - I've reported on her titles before, they are excellent
- and her adult writing is equally as good. This title is on
our Rental Fiction shelves. See you in the library! ~Wendy
