THE LOSS OF A GENTLEMAN
KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSN. BOARD WALK - OPENING SOON
BRIAN FRANCIS JAQUES QSM, Retd JP
Brian Jaques has worked in the family grocery store, started by his father Frank in 1924 all his
working life after starting there in 1950. This became the ‘everything you can imagine’ store -
they sold everything from petrol, groceries, clothing, lollies, appliances, etc. He and his four
brothers took over running the supermarket in 1967 when it became Jaques Four Square, before
Brian’s sons Glen and Greg took charge in 1998.
He was sworn in as a JP in 1971 at 36 years old at the Maungaturoto Courthouse after being
nominated by the then Otamatea County Council. Working in the FJ Jaques Store he was
readily available to all the community. He retired as a JP after 50 years service and was
recognised on Friday 9 April 1921with a morning tea in the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall, as
Northland’s longest serving JP. "I enjoyed my time as a JP and am still enjoying the work. I am
just glad to help people who need my services."
Brian has volunteered for several organisations in his community over the years, including
Kaiwaka Rugby Club, Eastern United RFC (Life Membership), Kaiwaka Sports Association
(Life membership, treasurer, patron), Kaiwaka Domain
Board, Kaiwaka Community Council and Businessman's
Assn. He has been a long
time treasurer or auditor for
countless groups including
Tennis Club, Scouts, Fishing
Club, KSA, Kaiwaka Media
Group, Kaiwaka Cemetery
Board
In 1992, he received the
Queen's Service Medal for
services to the public and
district.
And he loved the piano
accordion - the Jaques Band
was
known
all
over
Northland.

WEATHER
AUGUST
Isn’t it nice to see the
weather fining up a bit.
I wasn’t home for half of August as Jeff
and I spent a couple of weeks in the
South Island, visiting friends. It snowed
for 5 of the 7 days we were there -
beautiful. The land in Canterbury was
extremely wet. The poor sheep were
brown instead of being white. I have
been told that conditions are improving.
For the month of August, I recorded
166ml of rain.
We had 18 wet days and 13 days
without rain.
The least rain I have recorded for
August was in 2005 when we only had
67ml.
The most rain recorded for August was
in 2003 with 250.5ml.
I suppose as we are now heading
towards the beginning of daylight
saving, we will get some more wind as
the
Equinox*
moves
in.
The
temperatures are slowly but surely
improving.
~ Take care everyone, Karen
*Spring equinox was Friday 23
September (day and night are each
approximately 12 hours long).

through more than a century’s worth of
data, it has been officially determined that
winter 2022 was New Zealand’s warmest

A NEW SCHOOL : KURA
“The kura is moving for several reasons. It is currently on a small corner of
leased land at the old Ō Ruawharo School, which closed in 2001. It’s remote and
isolated, 10km off state highway 1 and 7km down a gravel road. The kura is not
easily accessible or visible and does not have the opportunity to grow.
Sixty-three sites were initially evaluated by the Ministry and 11 were presented
to the kura’s board. The board shortlisted three sites, including 9 Tawa Avenue,
which we purchased.
There is no detailed design for the kura yet. The goal is for the kura to open for
term 1 2025, to commemorate Te Ika A Ranganui, a battle in the Kaiwaka area.
We are planning for an opening roll for the kura of between 40 and 60 ākonga
[pupils], with the site planned so that the kura can grow to a roll of up to 200 in
future.
The goal of the kura is to expand into a wharekura and provide te reo Māori
learning opportunities for all ages within the community. The Ministry of
Education supports the use of educational facilities outside of school hours for
use by the community.
This project aligns with our Māori
Medium Network Strategy and
will provide a modern facility
close to transport links and the
homes of students, in an area
where there is a growing demand
for Māori Medium Education.”

ROCKETWERKZ:
I have received some excellent feedback from
Liam Bates, Digital Marketing Manager at Rocketwerkz, who hosted
three of our year 10 students last month as part of their work experience day.
Egor, Ben and William (pictured below) were outstanding representatives of our
school and showed a strong interest in computer science and game development.
This is a rapidly expanding field and could be an excellent career pathway for
these students.
UNDER 15 RUGBY
: It has been a real pleasure seeing the development of our
under 15 rugby team this year. 23 boys sign up for the team, with many having
not played rugby before. The team had 5 games this season, and have shown
considerable improvement during this time, with the boys showing a lot of
dedication during training sessions. This paid off with a season ending 19-14 win
against Bream Bay College. Thanks to Taira Phillips for managing the team, and
to Nick Makea and Lance Nepia for the fantastic work they have done coaching
this team. Thanks also to our team sponsors: Three Furlongs Kaiwaka, Gas
Maungaturoto, Maungaturoto Laundromat, Otamatea Hawks Rugby and Under
Armour.
BASKETBALL
: The Northland Junior Boys tournament took place in
Whangarei on last Tuesday with two Otamatea teams entered. Otamatea 1 really
showed their abilities on the day. In the group stages they beat Kerikeri High
School,
Northland
College and Dargaville
High School. In the
semi-final they beat
Bream Bay College,
but unfortunately could
not overcome a strong
Tauraroa Area School
in the final.

OTAMATEA NETBALL
Otamatea Netball had a very successful season both
with our 6 teams and umpires in Whangarei netball
centre competition.
The club has struggled majorly with injuries and
sickness this season which meant pulling in players
from time to time to field teams – (it has been tricky).
After a long season the competition finished on
Saturday 24th September with Otamatea Senior 2, 3 &
4 in Finals games.
Otamatea Senior 2 - Won their grade (Senior 2 was also
undefeated this season - photo on page19)
Otamatea Senior 3 - Won their grade
Otamatea Senior 4 - Won their grade
Otamatea Senior 1 - Finished last in their grade
Otamatea Junior 1 - Finished last in their grade (But
moved up grades during the season)
Otamatea Junior 2. - Finished last in their grade
UMPIRES - The Club has some amazing umpires
who have progressed and improved to smash
some major goals this season. Special mention to
Pat Buxton who not only achieved her theory but
also got her practical Zone umpire award.
The club also saw the following umpires selected for Finals games:
Pat Buxton - Senior A2 FINAL; Pip Smythe - College B2 FINAL
Stevie Ray - College A2 FINAL; Jodie Bennetto - Prem FINAL
2022 has been a massive year for Otamatea Netball Club. We hope to see this
growth going into 2023 for an even better year.

KAIWAKA FITNESS CENTER
A note to welcome all our new members and just explain how Kaiwaka Fitness
Center is run. We are a community gym that is run by a committee of
volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our awesome little
gym as best as can be. We have a small cleaning budget that we keep as low as
possible to keep expenses minimal which results in membership prices
remaining as low as possible.
But to keep this going so smoothly we need our members to do their bit by
respecting the gym.

Work Growing up
in
Kaiwaka
(before social media) when something
needed doing in the community
everybody had to go along to meetings
to see what was up. Things were
worked out, everybody got in behind
the project and it was done. A lot of
what Kaiwaka and its organisations
have, is thanks those volunteers who
have given up some of their time for the
betterment of the Community. In a way
we were the leaders for other
communities around us on how to
achieve things. Now the communities
around us are showing us how it’s done.
Kaiwaka is lagging well behind, and
our Community is suffering.
Unfortunately, with the advent of social
media it has become easier to vent your
frustrations and negativity for projects
online instead of actually learning more
about them. It is easier to vent on social
media than actually say there is a
problem, how can we make it work
within the rules. Or when a project is
done don't ‘put it down’ instead learn
more about it and the long-term
positives for the community. Too little
information can be very dangerous.
Unfortunately, as the years have moved
on it has been harder to achieve goals as
we now have things like ‘Health and
Safety’ along with many other
regulations that hinder or slow the
progress of projects. This has made it
frustrating to get projects done and
people are reluctant to help.
There is a saying that “You can't
teach an old dog new tricks”, well this
old dog is fast learning that you can. In
the past year or so I have worked hard
with a few dedicated people at Kaiwaka
Can to get into a position where we can
work with volunteers to achieve
projects. We have ‘Health and Safety’
procedures and protocols in place and
are in the process of organising Public
Liability insurance, all of which are
needed to move forward.
So is it not time we went back to times
past and removed ourselves from social
media and came along to Kaiwaka's
organisations and to find out what is
happening in our district. You may
disagree with what I am saying, and
you may have other ideas, well I am
happy to be proved wrong or listen to
any ideas that you may have or would
like to put to Kaiwaka Can. So, join us
at our monthly meetings.
Kaiwaka Can has a number of projects
in the pipeline and we would love to see
more of you there to move them along
or add your ideas to them. We are
updating our website with the detail of
new and ongoing project. Check us out
at www.kaiwakacan.nz or follow us on
our Facebook page.
PROJECTS
Walkway around Peninsula from
McClean Park (1947) to Eutopia,
pontoon at McClean Park (1947) for
kayaking, skate park and family picnic /
social area in McClean Park (2022),
welcome signs at each end of Kaiwaka,
Annual Lights and Lanterns festival
around Matiriki and more light
structures to enhance the Little Town of
lights.
Kaiwaka is the first town people come
to on SH1 in Northland. We are also the
first town in the north to touch the
Kaipara Harbour. Let’s make it a
destination not a town where you drive
through and a place the locals can enjoy
and be proud of once again.
Volunteers have made the Kaiwaka
community great once and Volunteers
can make it Great again.
Don't just live in Kaiwaka
be a part of it.
KAIWAKA CAN!
Our thoughts go out to the family of
Brian Jaques. Brian was a great
supporter and volunteer to the
Kaiwaka community. Rest in Peace.

OUR
PRESIDENT’S
SCHOLARSHIP
applications
are available. This Scholarship
is open to any younger person (not
necessarily at school) who is aiming to
become better qualified. Forms can be
obtained at Otamatea High as well as by
post
through
P
O
Box
65,
Maungaturoto, 0547. It will close on
25th October. We have had some
fantastic awardees in the past.
QUIZ NIGHT
A huge thank you to Nyree, Wiremu
and Adam, staff at Otamatea High
School, who ensured that our Quiz night
was a huge success. We ended up
having 21 teams competing. With the
entry fee, answers bought and raffles,
we were able to raise in excess of
$2,000. It was also great to have about
20 William Pike students dealing with
the technology and acting as runners on
the night. This gave them the chance to
complete some of their community
service component.
Thank you also to those who sponsored
prizes including Maungaturoto Four
Square, Atlas quarries, Ray White and
The Den. Another plus of the night was
the
benefit
provided
to
the
Maungaturoto Country Club and now
there are more people aware of the
fantastic menu that is on offer there.
DOE, Wm PIKE and OHS
Our Club has been supporting both
Duke Of Edinburgh and William Pike
for the last two years. Both DOE and
OHS netball provide us with our catered
meal once a month, which gives them
another chance to fundraise.
MEET THE CANDIDATES
We were also able to join with
Progressive Paparoa in hosting the
“Meet the Candidates” evening. The
format decided upon proved to be very
good for not only the three-minute
presentations but also in the ability for
attendees to write down questions
which the candidates could answer.
This was a less confrontational method
than just accepting the questions from
the floor. There was ample opportunity,
over a cup of tea, for those at the
meeting to ask questions of specific
candidates. Now it is imperative that
everyone who is eligible votes – you
have until the 7th October.
DRIVER MENTORING
We continue to have interest in our
Driver Mentoring scheme, but it is
important that those of you who have a
person with a Learner’s License, the
twelve to fifteen lessons (approx. 30
hours) we offer is but a small part of the
overall driving experience (120 hours)
that is recommended prior to sitting
Restricted. We note that the people who
do best in this test are the ones who
have been able to spend substantial time
behind the wheel, especially on the
open road and within built up areas.
KAURI MUSEUM’S 60TH
We are in the process of planning what
we will do for the Matakohe Kauri
Museum’s 60th celebration on the 15th
October. Please avail yourself of this
occasion not just to visit our stall but
the many other stalls and activities that
will be offered that day

Trees for Bees NZ has many
favourites. Here are some of the best:
Good nectar sources - rosemary,
lavender or fruit trees like pear, apple,
quince, and citrus.
Good native plant nectar sources -
rewarewa, tawari and rata.
Good pollen sources for spring -
male willows and native five finger.
Good resources in autumn - fennel,

WE REMEMBER
HER MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II became
Sovereign Head of the Order of St John upon
accession in 1952; King Charles III now holds
this office.
The Queen gave so much of her life to the
public and one such duty was to the Order of
St John.
The St John logo incorporates the Amalfi
Cross (as seen on the robe of Queen
Elizabeth). The meanings of this cross also
show the qualities of her life.
The Italian republic of Amalfi was the
principal European city trading with Palestine
in the 11th century.
Amalfi’s symbol, a white eight-pointed cross,
and the name ‘St John’ together represent the
full history and heritage of St John – more
than 900 years of volunteer commitment to
serve humanity. The Cross also directly links
the New Zealand organisation to St John
worldwide.
Every part of the cross has a meaning linked
to the four cardinal virtues and the eight
qualities of an effective first aider.
Meanings of the cross:
The four arms of the modern white cross that represents the Order of St John
symbolise the cardinal virtues:
Prudence; Justice; Temperance; Fortitude
The eight points, which stem from the four arms, represent the
qualities of a good first aider:
Humility; Sympathy; Gentleness; Truth; Compassion;
Unselfishness; Peace; Endurance
The lions and unicorns are the supporters of the Royal Coat of
Arms granted by the British Crown, and indicate that St John is
a Royal Order.

Kaye McElwain from Ray White
Mangawhai has lived in the area for 17
years and has worked in real estate for
more than two decades as an agent and
business owner. Today she gives a few
tips around real estate advertising and
marketing.
Firstly, all agencies and salespeople
have different approaches. What is on
offer and who pays marketing? Most
will outline what the company is
supplying; then offer options as to what
a seller (vendor) could pay for and how
it may help to have “more eyes” on
your property; and some will also offer
to share the cost on various
components.
At no time should you feel that you
MUST pay, however if your property is
being sold at the same time as a lot of
other properties, it is prudent to try and
have yours stand out from the crowd.
Twenty-two years of marketing and
selling real estate plus former life
experience has resulted in my thoughts
and recommendations changing with
the advent of online applications and
new technology.
There are different components to real
estate advertising – print and digital
forms. Although print is less popular
with
many
online
platforms available, it can
still have a place. Who is
your ideal buyer?
What
age
group?
Demographic? Real estate
publications
and
magazines are generally more
expensive than digital and online
packages but for the right reasons have
merit. Consider your time frame for a
sale, if you’re on a deadline, you may
wish to have the approach of as much
exposure as possible and include print.
Is your buyer likely to be reading a
paper or magazine rather than surfing
online?
Digital includes a multitude of online
web sites and platforms and social
media marketing. As most agencies use
a number, then it comes down to
packages to assist your home to have as
many eyes as possible on it before it
moves down the site order. Ask what is
on offer and what is involved, how it
will assist your property sale?
For example, Ray White has an offering
that is unique to Ray White called “Be
Seen” which consists of Facebook,
Instagram and Google ad words and a
contact capture feature. With this
particular marketing tool, interested
parties engage by giving their contact
details to the salesperson to then follow
up. This is a huge point of difference
and advantage compared to the popular
Trademe for the property owner. Yes,
your property may have lots of ‘Likes’
on Trademe, but if they don’t contact
the salesperson what does this really
mean?
In summary, real estate advertising and
marketing is a vital component in
achieving a premium sale price, a
timely sale and in indeed in some
markets a sale at all. Whoever is your
chosen agency/salesperson, a vendor
should always remember the old adage
– “You can’t sell a secret”.
Remember to ask how does the
salesperson contact their existing
database – the buyer may be sitting
there just waiting for a phone call!
Feel free to give me a call at any time if
you have any questions regarding real
estate.
Best wishes Kaye, 027 215 2016

In 1964, at 85 years Lily Linnell,
fourth and youngest daughter of
George and Mary Linnell (nee Hull)
of the early Kaiwaka history. Lily was
born 12 January 1880 and died 4 June
1974 ….
PART 4
In 1907, Father and I, after Mother’s
death, took a trip to England. We
thought it would be good for Father as
he had a very favourite sister, and two
brothers, still living there. One brother
had been in this country for a short time
and gone back to England. Father was
especially fond of him. So, we spent
most of the nine months with them, and
a short time with the sister in
Westmorland. His brothers lived in
Cheshire.
SHOEING
When the country road became
metaled, the horses had to be shod.
Father did it mostly. He got a shed built
and somewhere procured a pair of
blacksmith’s bellows, and the various
tools necessary. He watched the local
blacksmith and saw how it was done.
We had at that time two draught horses
named Lady and Star. We thought them
the biggest ever born. Star developed a
crack in his hoof, so he had to have a
shoe put on. When Father came out in
the morning with what Icie and I called
his blacksmithing trousers on, they
were an old pair of Uncle Frank’s,
miles too big, especially round the seat,
we said “look out”. Star was going to be
shod. The boys went out to work and
we girls had to help “hold” him. It was
mostly Icie, poor girl. It was like
holding Mt Vesuvius. It was far too
heavy a job for Father, as horses always
put the whole weight of their bodies on
the foot that had to be lifted and held on
the “shoer’s” knee. There were “tears
and sweat” in those days.
WEDDINGS
George was the first to be married, and
he and Duttie de Labrosse were the first
couple to be joined in Holy Matrimony
in the new church at Whakapirau. The
land was bought, and the church erected
by the combined efforts of Mr. A
Colbeck and Mr.Gibson. They were the
monied people in that part. A beautiful
church it was and is still. Father and
Mother went across riding I think, and
Forester. He was the bestman. Icie and I
had to take the pulling boat to Te Ihu
for them, the bride and bridegroom, to
cross the river in.
I think now that Edith’s might have
been the first wedding. She was married
to Lovelace Bull in the Waihakari
sitting room. And rode away round to
“Ohae” I think Rev Latter was the
clergyman, but I am a bit hazy about
that.
Then came Icie’s wedding in the same
old sitting room and I think Rev Ranald
McDonald was the clergyman. L.M.L.
{Lilian Margaret Linnell} was the only
bridesmaid and had a new frock for the
occasion, made by Jeannie Collier of
Kaiwaka. Afterwards she and her sister
lived in this house, owned now by Mrs
A.G.Bull*.
Katie married Herbert Leather, an
Englishman from Liverpool. They were
married at Huntly and attended by
Father and Mrs Gould. Her husband and
Herbert were friends, and many years
later Mrs Gould came to live in Katie’s
little home in the corner of Waihakari
farm and was friend of all Linnell and
Hull families – and was looked after by
her daughter Mavis till her death
.
SEWING, DRAPERS, GROCERS
Katie had a wonderful head of hair,
dark and thick, down to her waist. She
dressed it in two plaits, and they were
very thick ones, and must have been
very heavy to wear. She was very good
at working outdoors, so perhaps, like
Samson, the hair gave her strength.
The girls all learnt to sew and with
Mother’s help, made most of their
clothes, quite neat and tidy. We
wouldn’t have cared to walk into Bond
Street in them, but we always “got by”.
At the time when Mr Thomas Coates
was working out the kauri timber from
Pukekaroro, we had the contract to
supply the workers with meat (beef –
they wouldn’t look at mutton) and
butter. Edith made the butter, summer
and winter, and Forrie carried a box of
it to Kaitara, below where the bridge is
now, every week, and George took the
beef on a sledge to the same place. John
McClean, grandfather of the next-door
neighbours, met them with a rowboat
and took it round to where the bush
men were working.
There was a store kept by Mr Coates
and looked after by a man named
Nicholson. He was a good bookkeeper
and made few mistakes. We got our
stores from there. They were brought
round by the boat which came to get the
meat.
There
were
also
travellers for drapers and
grocers going round the
country
looking
for
orders. They would bring
patterns of different sorts
of material to select
from. There was one
rather aggressive one
who used to tell us what
was his “fancy”.
It was always bare feet,
except when going out,
and many a thorn found
its way into our feet.
Also, many a bee sting,
until I got very ill after
one stung me on my lip.
After that I was
made to wear
boots and shoes,
and they did not
last, I ask you.
The
girls
all
learnt to sew
from Mother of
course, and could
make their own
frocks, with her
help. One time
two
maiden
cousins sent a
box out from
England,
and
after being picked
over by the relatives
in Auckland of the
best, we got a few
things which was a
great help – but we
got by, and I think on
the whole we were a
happy a family as
most – under the
circumstances.
MILKING
One year Katie took over milking the
cows. I had to help her so the men
could get away earlier to work. They
had brought up some rocks from the
beach to make a path round the yard.
Huge heavy boulders, and they had
oyster shells on them. However, when I
was told to bring a certain cow into the
shed it was not very willing. In running
around it, I fell on one of the rocks and
cut my knee, so that excused me for a
long time. I still have the mark. Can’t
say I was sorry to be let off as the yard
was up to our knees in mud.
TOPSY
One pony we used to ride called Topsy,
had a habit when being girthed up. This
was to put her head round and give a
nip to whoever was doing it. So, we had
always to keep the off-rein tight while
saddling her. She must at one time have
had a score. But she was a good pony,
with quite good paces – caught with
others on the run after we bought it. She
had the same trick when being shod.
