KSA: OTAMATEA GROUP DAY
Tuesday 25 October pupils from surrounding schools - Mangawhai Beach,
Ahuroa, Tauhoa, Waipu, Otamatea High, Maungaturoto, Wellsford and
Home-school - met at our local sports ground with their lambs and calves.
This Group Day has been enjoyed for many years by
families. The numbers weren’t huge but the quality
was outstanding.
Photo left is of Arjan Pedersen who was one of the
Calf judges. Arjan is very experienced in calf rearing
and handling, having competed in many Shows and
was awarded the 12 year badge through the Otamatea
Group. The Alf Lacey Shield he is holding was first
presented by Alf Lacey in 1946 to the Otamatea Group Calf Clubs for ‘Best
Dairy Type’.
Some folk may remember Lacey’s Pharmacy Alfred Ernest Lacey (pictured
above with his wife Nell), born 1 April 1908 in Whangarei, married and
moved to Maungaturoto in 1943, opening the town’s the first chemist shop.

WEATHER
SEPTEMBER
The lawns are still very wet. I start
thinking it is going to be dry enough to
mow them all and then down comes
the rain again grrrr. Even when we did
get a fine day, there wasn’t any sun or
wind to dry out the ground.
We had 115ml of rain over 18 days in
September 2022 and 19 days in 2021.
The highest rainfall recorded by me
for September was in 2015 with a total
of 207ml.
The least rainfall for September was in
2008 with 43.5ml.
The Brynderwyn waterfall has been
flowing steadily all this month. The
weather is getting better, and I suppose
it won’t be long before some are
looking for moisture from the skies
(not me). Spring has certainly sprung.
Some of the trees are starting to get
their new leaves.
Take care everyone, Karen

LOCAL BIRD SURVEY: HAVE YOU SEEN OR
ARE YOU HEARING KIWI AT NIGHT NEAR
YOUR HOME?
We are doing a survey to see where kiwi have dispersed to in the
Piroa-Brynderwyn ranges. We know that 43 birds were re-
introduced to the bush at Marunui, up King Rd, from 2013 to
2016. 6 more rescued birds arrived in 2020.
Where are they now? Are they breeding successfully? What is
the population now? Are we doing everything we can to keep them safe?
The first step in answering these questions is to find where they have
established territories, and we can do that by listening for their distinctive calls.
Not sure what a North Island Brown Kiwi sounds like? Head to the Save the
Kiwi website and look under kiwi call/kiwi facts: https://www.savethekiwi.nz/
about-kiwi/kiwi-facts/kiwi-calls/
If you think you are hearing kiwi at night, we would love to hear from you.

SENIORS’ AFTERNOON TEA
This is a good time to remind you
about our Seniors’ afternoon tea which
we are planning to hold at 2pm on
Friday 25th November in the
Centennial Hall, Maungaturoto. Once
again, we are going to be entertained
by some of Maura Flower’s singers. It
is amazing the talent that is in this
group and we are privileged to be able
to enjoy their presentation each year.
To help us with our catering, if you
would like to come, please call either
Eileen – 021 142 0357 or Stella – 021
149 0877 by Friday 18th November.
HAVOC
As many of you know, we help look
after the tracks in both Piroa Falls and
Nikau Grove. The winter (and stray
dogs) have caused some havoc in
Nikau Grove, and we are in the process
of repairing the damage. Thank you,
Bruce for removing the two fallen
trees. We now need to look at ways of
replacing the metal on the track so that
it doesn’t run off. We are also placing
netting on the boardwalk so that it is
not so slippery. This is probably a good
time to remind people that dogs need to
be on a lead when walking through this
area.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE KIT
We were able to be present with a
display at the Matakohe Kauri
Museum’s 60th Settlers’ Day. This is
always a fantastic day which
commences with a church service at
9am in the pioneer church. Our display
this year was of an
Emergency Response Kit -
see photo. We fundraise to
cover the cost of a kit ($600)
and they are prepacked, ready for
shipping to any areas where emergency
supplies are needed, especially in the
Pacific Islands. The box holds 60 items
likely to be needed by a family in an
emergency situation. Included are
tarps, clothing, tools, cooking, eating
and medical essentials. The 78litre
container can be used to hold fresh
water. This display
created a
reasonable amount of interest, and we
were also fortunate to meet a Rotarian
from the Netherlands, who arrived at
the Museum as part of a bus tour. Once
again, we became aware of Rotary
being a worldwide organization.
ROTARY ALUMNI
We are interested in hearing from
Rotary Alumni – those people in our
community who may not necessarily
be a member of a Rotary club but who
have taken part in one of the many
Rotary programmes over the years,
including Rotary Youth Leadership
Award (RYLA), Model United Nations
Assembly (MUNA) or have been on a
student exchange overseas. It would be
great to get in touch with any of these
people in the hope we can reconnect
and at the very least hear their stories.
If you know of anyone who fits this
category, please tell a Rotarian about
them or get in touch with me (Phone
Eileen – 021 142 0357).

Today Kay looks at the perils
facing
private
property
sellers.
At first, it might appear to be an
appealing option to sell your home
privately and avoid paying any
commission to a salesperson but doing
it all yourself can open a can of worms.
You must ask the question are you
equipped with the marketing and
negotiation skills to get the best
possible price for what is likely to be
your biggest asset?
According to the Real Estate Institute
of New Zealand (REINZ), the median
price for properties sold by real estate
agents was 15 percent higher than for
private sales.
To give you a snapshot of where our
local market is at - the latest stats from
realestate.co.nz show that Northland
has had an increase of 104% of new
property
listings
compared
to
September last year.
This sharp increase in property stock
gives buyers more choices, creates
more competition between listings, and
produces more favourable
conditions for buyers, not
sellers. With this current
cooler market, it’s essential to use all
the tools in your armoury to secure a
sale.
At Ray White Mangawhai we function
differently from other agencies in that
we work as a team with an open
database where all salespeople can tap
into our extensive list of contacts to
match your property with the right
buyer. We enjoy a dominant market
share of all sales across Kaiwaka,
Mangawhai, Te Arai, Hakaru, and
Topuni.
In a cooler market, marketing is more
important than ever, at Ray White we
have our own cutting-edge social
media marketing (Be Seen) that utilises
ads on Facebook, Instagram and
Google Adwords which consistently
delivers more buyer leads than any
other real estate advertising including
Trade Me.
Attracting interest is only one part of
selling a house - it’s not the same as
selling furniture or even a car, there are
a bunch of legal considerations. When
selling your property, you’re legally
obligated to share all the relevant
information about it, such as any issues
with the boundary or title, any
unconsented
building
work
or
alterations,
any
known
weather
tightness issues, and whether any
proposed developments could have an
impact on a buyer’s access, views or
enjoyment.
If you fail to share this info with buyers
you could put the sale in jeopardy, or
even
be
taken
to
court
for
compensation. So as a private seller
you might not be paying commission
but you also run the risk of ending up
with a hefty legal bill if you’re not up
to speed with the legal loopholes when
it comes to selling real estate.
Feel free to give me a call at any time.
Best wishes Kaye, 027 215 2016

HELL READING CHALLENGE
The annual challenge is on once again!
Kids aged 5 to 12 years old can report to

a stamp on their pizza card. Collect 7
stamps, and you can take the card to any

we can give you an informational
bookmark to keep, and we will give you
the wheel card for your stamps when you

to encourage reluctant readers to sit
down with a book. Follow the HELL

CHANGES IN NON-FICTION
If you've been in the library over the past
few weeks, you'll probably be aware that
we have been having a clear-out of tatty
and unread books from the Non-Fiction
section. What a change! The shelves now
look much tidier, and more attractive,
and it will be easier for everyone to find
what they're looking for.
As a result, the wooden shelves against
the window at the State Highway 1 end
of the library will be taken away. They're
my personal property that were on loan.
Already, with the books removed from
those shelves, there's a lot more light in
the library, and it will only get better
when the shelves themselves have gone.
I am considering ideas for using that
space to expand the junior sections of the
library in some way.
BOOK REVIEW
I have read so
many
books
since
I
last
reported here in
the Bugle! If
you want to see
what
I'm
reading and how
I rated it, sign
up
to
Goodreads.com
and ask to be
my friend there,
and you'll see it
all,
including
the roughly 30
books I've read
since the last one I reported.
One of the most fun ones I've read lately
is The Kaiju Preservation Society by
John Scalzi. "When COVID-19 sweeps
through New York City, Jamie Gray is stuck
as a dead-end driver for food delivery apps.
That is, until Jamie makes a delivery to an
old acquaintance, Tom, who works at what
he calls "an animal rights organization."
Tom's team needs a last-minute grunt to
handle things on their next field visit. Jamie,
eager to do anything, immediately signs on.
What Tom doesn't tell Jamie is that the
animals his team cares for are not here on
Earth."
If detective thrillers are your style, I've
been reading the Tracy Crosswhite series
by Robert Dugoni, the Caleb Zelic series
by Emma Viskic, the Josie Quinn series
by Lisa Regan, and more. All of these
books are on the shelves in the library.
See you in the library ~Wendy

TAONGA HAUORA COUNSELLING SERVICE
It is with pleasure that I introduce myself to both new and existing clients as I
transition from working mainly in the education sector to the private sector and
offer my professional services as a counsellor.
I work from the Health Center, TAONGA HAUORA, which is 5kms North of
Kaiwaka on SH1 and is sign posted. This center provides Holistic Health
Services as an alternative to mainstream allopathic medical practices along with
counselling.
I am a parent and a grandparent and have worked in this area as a teacher and
school counsellor for the last 21 years. I am passionate about supporting my
clients in identifying their
problem stories and using their
inner strengths to find solutions.
I work with a range of age
groups, youth through to
retirees, and specialise in a
number of areas, which include
mediation, grief and trauma
counselling, emotional self-
regulation, restorative justice,
supporting youth during family
break-up, and life coaching.
I also provide holistic health
assessments which includes the
use of a device called a HeMe, that provides a report giving mineral readings,
potential disease risks, and health suggestions including dietary advice.
