WEATHER
OCTOBER
WOW what a way to end
the month of October!! Warm and
DRY, just what we needed. I finally
managed to mow 99.9% of our lawn in
the last week of October, albeit a bit
soft underfoot but then we had 77ml of
rain and the ground is back to the same
amount of softness as it was three
weeks prior and back to 75% mow. Oh
well you can’t win them all and after all
it is a typical spring. It won’t be long
before people are complaining about
the ground being too dry (not me – I
like the warm and dry).
For the month of October this year, I
recorded 182.5ml of rain over 14 days
(77ml of it falling in the last two days
of the month).
The highest rainfall recorded at my
place for October was last year (2021)
with 215ml.
The lowest recorded was in 2013 and
2010 both giving us only 12ml.
According to all the long-range
forecasts I have seen, we are to expect a
warm and damp summer. Great for
grass and crop growth, not much good
for crop harvesting and getting hay dry
or shearing sheep.
The Brynderwyn waterfall is flowing
very nicely.
Take care everyone, Karen

bagels.

9-Ball is a now a world-renowned sport

the top 100. What we have not had is
representation from the Northland area.
ARMISTICE DAY
On Friday 11 November at 11am at
Hakaru RSA we remembered those
whose lives were taken in the first
world War.
Armistice Day marks the anniversary
of the agreement that ended the First
World War which was from 1914-1918
and commemorates the sacrifice of
those who died serving New Zealand in
this war.
This conflict in the first world War left
between 9 and 13 million dead and as
many as one third of these with no
grave. It is an honour to remember how
much they all gave up for us, please
join us in remembering them.
We are also looking at opening on
Friday evenings in December.
Membership at Hakaru is $15.
We look forward to seeing you all at
the RSA, Settlement Road, Hakaru.

POSSUMS, RATS AND FOREST
Participants in a community-led pest control project on Oneriri Peninsula are
seeing reduced vegetation damage and increased numbers of birds.
The Kaira Oneriri Biosecurity Area (Koba) biofund has been renewed by the
Northern Regional Council (NRC) with an increase in the area covered to 1720
hectares and 19 landowners.
Prime targets for control are possums, rats and stoats.
The area includes two QE2 bush covenants and other remnants of former forest
cover. There are significant puriri, kohekohe, pohutukawa, titoki and kauri. Bird
species include kereru, ruru, kotare, korimako, matuku, riroriro and piwakawaka
with occasional visits from
North Island kaka. Matuku, the
bittern, is on the national critical
list with fewer than 1000 in
existence. The rarely seen
Northland green gecko is also
present.
The Northland Regional Council
has provided a range of traps
(including live capture) which
are available on loan to
landowners and residents living
between Kaira Road and Oneriri
Station.
Contact Hugh Patterson 021

Photo: New control traps
include the "flipping timmy" and
"trapinator" - both 'kill traps'
used for possums. Box traps for
stoats and rats include doubles,
singles and a rat trap container.

What an amazing performance from our kapa haka roopu who looked fantastic
in their full dress, performing in the gym in front of the whole school. Their
practice at the previous weekend noho certainly paid off. The singing was in
harmony, the choreography was excellent, pictured with their pizza.
My Iwi Rules was held last week. Congratulations to Arawa for taking out the
competition with Maniapoto, Whatua and Ngapuhi coming in close behind.

SUMMER CATALOGUE
The new Summer Catalogue is

December - listing some good
recommendations for great titles to read
for the whole family.
SUMMER
READING
CHALLENGE
There will be a Summer Reading
Challenge competition this year. It is
being held via the Beanstack app
(https://kaipara.beanstack.org/).
You
can access Beanstack either via the app
on your phone, or via the web site link
above. Get in the habit now of logging
your (and/or your child's) reading, and
you'll be ready to go when it starts. See
me if you need help getting started with
this. There's also information at
Enterprise about it - look for the
friendly blue button near the top of the
home page. Traditionally, there are not
a lot of entries received for this
competition, so your chances of
winning something are pretty good.
CHRISTMAS
HOLIDAY
SHUTDOWN
Our last day for 2022 will be Christmas
Eve, Saturday 24 December. We reopen
again on Monday 9 January. In the
meantime, anything borrowed in
December that would normally be due
while we're shut will be automatically
extended to the 9th. The after-hours
returns slot will be open, so you can
return books any time.
Come in and stock up on reading
material before we close, so you don't
run out over the holiday, or make good
use of our free digital library that is
open 24/7 - details are at Enterprise* or
come in and ask us about it. .
BOOKS FOR SALE
We have a great range of books for sale
on the table and rotunda just inside the
front door. Fifty cents each, or 3 for $1,
or 10 for $2.50. There are fiction and
non-fiction books to choose from.
These are old books that have been
culled from our shelves to make space
for new ones.
BOOK
REVIEW
I've read a couple
of light mysteries
recently that I
recommend. They
are The Raffles
Affair by Vicki
Virtue, and A
Cornish
Christmas
Murder by Fiona Leitch. Both are NZ
-based writers and are on the light side
of the thriller genre, and a fun read.
Now on the Rental Fiction shelves.
See you in the library ~Wendy

went on their noho to Ōruawharo Marae, joining with the Kura on
lots of exciting activities such as poi, string games, rakau, waiata etc. They learnt about local marae
history and experienced a powhiri. Photo below left. And then to the Matakohe Museum where they
enjoyed the old schoolhouse – students pictured sitting in the old style desks.
Term 4
Term 4 is always a busy time. Post COVID we have some very exciting events happening. For the first
time in 6 years the Senior School went camping last week. The Year 5 and 6 children will be at
Marsden Christian Camp next week. The children will experience amazing activities that prompt
confidence building and self-esteem such as kayaking, flying fox and an amazing waterslide.
The Junior School will visit MAZ (Mangawhai Activity Zone) this term also having the opportunity to
grow their confidence.
Sporting activities on the calendar now that summer is here. The Junior School has a tabloid day put
on by the senior students of Maungaturoto School (2 December). This is always a fun day with the
children having the opportunity to mix with students from local schools. The Year 6's are off to a
similar fun day at Otamatea High School (30 November) where they will meet with other schools in a
sports day finishing off with a swim in the big pool.
A fun Athletics Day, including the local Kura and preschool on 7 December.
A powhiri for the gifting of two korowai has been held. These will be worn at the Kapahaka Festival on 3December at
Otamatea High School. We are on at 1.30pm if you want to come and watch.
Our Prize Giving will be on 9 December at 10am, at school in the shade of our
beautiful trees. The students will share their Kapahaka performance from the
Festival with whanau.
We are currently selling pool keys and the pool is open for the summer months,
after school, on the weekend and holidays. Keys cost $60 for school whanau and
$80 for community. ~

DOE and WILLIAM PIKE
Recently President Les has attended
OHS on two occasions. The first was
for the presentation of donations to both
the Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) ($2,800)
and William Pike ($2,000) groups.
Participants in the latter were an
integral part of making our Quiz night a
great success. Otamatea is fortunate in
having such worthwhile groups which
help build resilience in the students.
Another way we have been able to
support young people’s fundraising
efforts is by having both DOE and
Netballers providing our meals on a
regular basis.
With Les in the picture below are from
left to right: Robyn Bruce (DOE
organiser), Alana Yardley (DOE Gold
participant), Dirk Smyth (Principal);
Sarah Campbell-Winter (DOE Gold
Participant) and President Les.
SENIORS’ AFTERNOON TEA
By the time you read this we will
hopefully have had our very successful
Seniors’ afternoon tea. We appreciate
the fact the Maura Flower is able to
bring her trainees along to entertain us.
Not only do those present receive a
feast of talent, but it is also an
opportunity for these youngsters to
perform in front of an audience that is
largely foreign to them.
President’s Scholarship
The President and selection
panel had a real challenge in
selecting the winner of the
President’s Scholarship of $1500. We
would like to congratulate Billie Le
Mesurier-Cowbourne on attaining this
award. As has always been the case,
selection of a standout is not easy, and
all the other applicants are to be
commended on their applications. We
would like to remind the community
that this is an annual award, and it is not
solely for school attendees. The aim of
the scholarship is to provide a person
who is furthering their education with a
little bit of help.
INTERNET FRAUD
We have also been able to get
Constable Trae Harrison to speak to
us on internet fraud. Trae investigates
fraud in the Whangarei and Kaipara
Districts. As Trae said, “it can be
hugely devastating for people to lose
money in this way.” This is something
that many more people are getting
caught with and we really appreciated
his taking the time to talk to us. Just
remember that banks will never ask for
personal details either by the internet or
by phone.

HOW DOES YOUR GARDEN GROW?
FEIJOAS: Still The feijoas are full of flower. Should be a great
season this year. We have 15 trees so could probably call it an orchard.
When the trees first flowered I saw birds eating the flowers and wasted
a lot of time chasing them off. One rainy day I was doing what
gardeners do. Reading about plants. Oh my goodness. Feijoas are pollinated by
birds. I had been trapped by the false assumption devil. Today I watched the birds
busily pollinating . Good little birds. They haven't changed at all. That was my
job.
HYDRANGEAS.
They
are
looking beautiful at the moment.
Lots of rain has them bursting into
flower. I'm slightly conflicted
because they struggle in our long
hot summer. And my rule is to
only grow plants that thrive in our
environment. But while they look
sad in February they don't die but
do bounce back. So I feel they are
worth it. Semi shade and well
mulched. Remember the colour
can change depending on the
acidity of your soil. That's pink
alkaline or blue acidic. Our soil
here tends to be alkaline. Easy to
propagate by cuttings. ~ Heather,

Ray White Mangawhai
has lived in the area for
17 years and has worked
in real estate for more
than two decades as an
agent and business owner. Today she
looks at how to navigate today’s
changing market.
In these rather up and down, random
real estate times there are a number of
points to consider if you’re wishing to
transact - either buying or selling:
We have found a surge in requests for
property appraisals from potential
sellers over the last few weeks, which is
a very positive indicator towards a
flourish of activity in the New Year.
New property coming onto the market
this side of Xmas has also had a lift and
is very good to see. For the right
property in the right location, we are
still seeing interest from Auckland
buyers. The number of ‘lifestylers’ and
permanents moving north into our patch
has risen dramatically over the past few
years.
For those looking to buy, price
adjustments have been occurring from
our vendors, timed wonderfully to catch
the eye of a relaxed holiday maker
during the coming festive season.This
is a wise move considering the now
slower Auckland property market. The
savvy seller will utilise a marketing
strategy that secures an unconditional
buyer and this side of Xmas!
Feel free to talk to us about the best
strategy to navigate this changing
market.
With a changing market you will see
changing property values. Marketing is
key to both finding your desired
property; and for those selling -
securing the best buyer. Digital
marketing is the component of
marketing that uses the internet and
online based digital technologies such
as mobile phones, desktop computers,
and other digital media and
platforms to promote property. Here at
Ray White, we are all over this space!
We have packages with reach and
exposure to set your property apart
from the competition, and they don’t
need to break the budget. Drop in, call
or email us to know more.
Wishing you a safe and happy holiday
season, Kaye.
WHAT WE ARE
SEEING RIGHT
NOW!
CREATE MEMORIES
- NOT REGRETS
Live wisely and well
An elderly lady says, ‘One
benefit of living so long is
sharing what I’ve learned.
So, make my day by letting
me share three secrets that
can make your life better.’
Then she offers some great counsel:
‘(1) Time is precious; don’t waste it.
After my husband died, I was staying
with friends. One evening they started
arguing
and
eventually
stopped
speaking to one another. Now, I know
arguments happen; my husband and I
had several doozies. But at that
moment, I understood as never before
that the time we have together is
precious. Don’t waste it bickering about
things that won’t matter when your
loved one is gone. Do everything you
can to live in harmony and show your
love. Why? Because no matter how
long you have together, it’s never
enough.'
'(2) You’re making memories; make
them good ones. Looking back, I thank
God for so many unforgettable
moments. The day my husband died we
kissed (as we always did when we
parted), at noon. By five-thirty that
evening, he was dead. I’ve always been
glad about that final kiss. So, create
memories – not regrets!'
'(3) It’s not what happens, but how
you respond that counts. Every day
holds new challenges that will test your
love and resolve. You have the power
through Christ to make each test an
occasion for growth. Life is full of
seemingly unpleasant events. Try to
handle them in such a way that when
you’re old, you will be able to look
back and say, “I thank you, God, for
that experience; it helped me grow.”’
That’s how to live wisely and well!
Wisdom belongs to the aged, and
understanding to the old.’ Job 12:12
