WEATHER
NOVEMBER
Well, what a wet November!!!
The poor ground was just starting to
dry out and then down it came again.
The lawn I crowed about getting
mown at the beginning of November is
now back to wet wet wet and once
again I can’t mow it with the ride on as
it would definitely get stuck. The grass
is now a foot high. I can’t even cut it
with a weedeater for fear of losing my
gumboots in the mud. The rest of the
lawn however is somewhat dryer and
can be done regularly.
I feel for the poor farmers trying to
get their silage made. I wonder if we
are going to get any summer this year.
I do however remember one year (not
sure which) when it was cold and
damp right through to December 24th
and then on Xmas morning the
weather changed dramatically and was
beautifully sunny and warm.
For the month of November this
year I recorded 297ml at our place
over 20 days. 2022 is the highest
November rainfall I have recorded
since I started keeping records, which
was in 2003.
The least rainfall I have recorded
for November was 24.5ml in 2010
over 6 days.
Take care everyone and hope you all
have a very Merry Xmas and a happy
new year. I hope you have cleaned out
the chimney, so Santa doesn’t get too
much soot on his suit. Cheers, Karen
Another year Gone By.
I hope 2023 is kinder health
wise to everyone.
The November meeting was
well attended, and it was a pleasure to
welcome Kerry Cline a very talented
lady who does painting on silk. Kerry
spent time in Alaska painting pictures
scarves and cards. We all learnt
something new! To test if something is
REAL Silk put a very hot iron on it and
if it doesn't shrivel up it is real silk!!
Kerry also does her painting in New
Zealand lives in Warkworth and is
willing to take a class, we are hoping to
have her back next year.
Many thanks to Lena who put on
afternoon tea in Remembrance of her
precious daughter Bobby who passed
away recently after many years of
illness.
The Birthday Girls for November were
Lena, Heather, Trish and Ann hope you
had lovely Birthdays. I spent mine at
the Hundertwasser Art Centre in
Whangarei a very interesting and
enjoyable day.
Our raffle was won by Ann and second
Trish, many thanks to Annie for
donating the first prize my Great
Granddaughter loved it!! "Very
cuddly".
Eleven of our members met up with
Waipu Women’s Section and had a
lovely Christmas celebration at the
Waipu Golf Course, 4 of our members
won 4 of the five raffle prizes Thank
you Waipu, we will invite them to
Hakaru in the new year and hopefully
they can have a turn at winning the
raffles.

ONERIRI GARDENER
BUDDLEIA:
The butterfly
bush. They are looking so
beautiful with pairs of monarchs
dancing around the blooms. Easy
to grow but a bit problematic. In a few weeks
the leaves will be shredded by munching
caterpillars. I count it worth all the scrappy
messiness just for the sheer joy of watching
this. I have this deep purple and a white
buddleia. They come in lilac and pink as well
and will grow 3 to 4 metres. You can chop
them back really hard when the butterflies are
finished. They will self sow and can be
propagated by cuttings.
ALSTROEMERIA:
Inca or Peruvian lily.
Loving the rain. Great as a cut flower and do
so well here you could almost say they are
naturalised. Actually a South American
native. All the lush foliage and flowers die
back creating lovely biomass. They grow
from the fleshy roots which are easily divided
in winter. ~ Heather, Oneriri Plants

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL
From Dirk Smyth, the Principal's News
MATARIKI TOI MĀORI FESTIVAL: What a fantastic day we had on
Saturday for our annual Otamatea Toi Maori Festival. The kapa haka
performances were very impressive and the Otamatea High School students'
performance 'stole the show'. There were hundreds of guests in the hall for each
roopu on stage, and the stalls and activities kept everyone entertained and well
fed. Thank you to everyone involved. Otamatea group pictured below.

KAIWAKA SCHOOL and DUFFY BOOKS
News from S. McCormick, principal:
Kaiwaka had our first year as part of the
Duffy Books Programme thanks to 5 fantastic sponsors: Absolute Concrete,
Kaiwaka Four Square, Leabourns, Maungaturoto Rotary, Oneriri Station.
This has resulted in our 150 thrilled Students reading and rereading more books.
They each took home 6 books they chose and many also received a ‘caught
being good’ book prize. We’ve enjoyed a visit from the Duffy theatre and NZ
author Maria Gill. Kaiwaka being part of Duffy Books In Homes has meant
1000+ more books in the Kaiwaka community.
Last week was Book Week. Each year we hold a book character dress up
competition and this year we added a book themed cake competition and reading
in an unusual place photo competition as well.
Our Prize Giving was held last Friday in the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall. The
students were able to share their Kapahaka performance from the Festival. This
assembly was a time to celebrate our Year 6's who also had their Year 6 Dinner
at the KSA. We wish them all the best for the future. A big thank you to the
PTA for catering

especially

KSA GRANTS
With the recent change of the Three
Furlongs Bar & Grill business
ownership the KSA Pokies will not be
able to award any grants. The system
of grants for our local community first
began in 1986. John
Keighley, pictured, was
instrumental in getting the
licence and machines. John
was the first chairman of
KSA and was the driving
force behind the building of
the
Kaiwaka
Sports
complex. Roger Smith in
his book ‘Stories tall,
Stories short, Kaiwaka
1959-2009’ pages 131 to
137 tells of John’s amazing
involvement. “The biggest
moneyspinner was the Sweetwater
Festivals. Keighley persuaded his
brother, Daniel, who organised the
festival, to hire the eastern United
rugby club to provide security for the
event. Along with the security came
the right to run a food stall. Mark
Ottaway remembers the food stall was
open 24 hours a day for the duration of
the festivals.” He was also involved in
a full range of activities, especially
rugby.

SENIORS’ AFTERNOON TEA
We had a very successful seniors’
afternoon tea again. Thanks to Terri
and Kenny for decorating the hall and
tables. A big thank you to all the others
who helped (both Rotarians and
community members), before, during
and after the event. And, as for the
entertainment. Maura Flower had about
12 youngsters (approx. 9 to 18 in age)
singing their hearts out. There were 24
items on the programme and four of
them were in German. Most of these
youngsters were preparing for their
Trinity exams in Auckland, which were
to happen last week.
Not only did they entertain the visitors
for a little more than an hour, but this
gave them another opportunity to sing
in front of an audience, most of whom
they would not know. There was a
good mix of serious and humorous
presentations, but my favourite was “O
Holy Night”. During the course of the
afternoon Pooh Bear, pictured below,
also chatted with the visitors.
As there was a large amount of food
left over, we did deliver plates to those,
who, because of health reasons could
not
attend
then
people
were
encouraged to not only take a plate for
themselves, but also a plate for those
they knew who had not come. Once
again, while initiated by our Club, the
afternoon
showed
the
positive
community spirit that abounds here and
the special interaction between young
and old alike.
PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP
Our penultimate night for the year
proved a real bonus as we had the
presentation
to
our
President’s
Scholarship winner, Billie Le Mesurier
-Cowbourne, pictured right. It was
really great to hear what Billie had to
tell us after she thanked us for the
money, which she said would be very
useful for the provision of books and
other course costs.
Billie has been at Otamatea for her
entire secondary schooling, a time
which she has thoroughly enjoyed. The
culmination of the year was not only
being Head Girl but also
Dux. Her future plans are to
study medicine at Auckland
University, after which she
would like to complete six years study
towards becoming a doctor.
This choice has come about because
she realizes that, especially in the rural
areas emergency rooms are not always
available after hours which can mean a
considerable
delay
in
attaining
treatment by having to travel to
Whangarei.
Billie hopes to come back to a rural
area once qualified. During the coming
years Billie’s passion for hockey,
which she has played at multiple
levels, will have to go on hold but she
is hoping to maintain her fitness by
playing badminton instead. When
Billie was asked about a highlight of
her time at Otamatea she mentioned
that hiking the Kepler and Milford
track with the DOE gold group was
very special. By the way, another of
Billie’s achievements is attaining the
DOE gold award. Billie has shown, as
have her predecessors, that we have
some incredible talent in our area, and
we look forward to following her
future attainments.
We wish you all a very special time
over Christmas. May you have some
special times with families but also
take time to be kind to yourselves.

At the recent
Northland
Sheep
Dog
Trial
Association
dinner, Tony
Hargreaves of
Kaiwaka was
presented
a
‘talking stick’
in recognition
of 50 years of
judging Sheep Dog Trials in New
Zealand by Northland president Shaun
Haynes.
Tony a sheep and beef farmer in
Oneriri, life member of the Molesworth
Dog Trial club, Northland and the New
Zealand Sheep Dog Trial Association
(NZSDTA) was absolutely thrilled
with the recognition, and when
reflecting on the years of judging he
just said, ‘It’s always been about the
fellowship, I was the luckiest bugger
on the planet, we’d travel and talk, talk,
talk’.
He was talking about travelling all over
New Zealand, and as far afield as
Australia, with many friends and
colleagues, and passionate dog trialists
from across the country. Tony credits
his entry into judging to some special
men, brothers Rex and Don Ries, Guy
Thomson and Mac McKenzie amongst
others. He says he always had great
people around him, they didn’t always
agree, but had good robust discussions.
Since 1971 he’s been judging at show
trials, and hasn’t stopped since, never
missing a year, being officially added
to the NZSDTA judges list 1973. Tony
has judged at every trial ground in
Northland
multiple
times,
he
commented how that has just improved
how he’d run his dogs on those courses
‘after you judge, next time you
compete there you’ll compete a whole
lot better (on that course). You’ll have
an understanding of that hill that you
never had before’.
Tony had a goal early in his dog trial
career, he wanted to win a New
Zealand championship, and judge a
New Zealand championship. While he
and heading dog Boy won both a North
and South Island, the national title
eluded them, however, as a judge he
has really done it all. His first ‘island’
was the short head and yard in Wanaka
in 1987, in 1990 he judged his first
New Zealand Championships in
Garston, South Otago, merino sheep
and a long head course covered in
snow. In 1993 he returned to the short
head and yard event, judging his
second New Zealand Championship
(relatively uncommon in the sport) in
Rotorua.
While he reached the peak in the more
traditional area of trials in the late 80s
and early 90s, he went on to reach a
high standard in the Handy Dog events
as well, judging the New Zealand final
at Kumeu in 1996. Tony didn’t stop at
the national event, in 2002 and 2006 he
travelled as team manager and judge
with the NZ Handy Dog team to
Australia, during the trans-Tasman
championships, saying he wouldn’t
have missed those for quids.
Sticking in a sport for 50 years isn’t
just about your own achievements,
Tony is a passionate community bloke
and has given more than his share back
to the sport. He spent 11 years as part
of the New Zealand judge’s selection
committee, acting as the chairman of
selectors for a period of time, he recalls
(as he put it) ‘some really astute
fellows, strong debates and discussions
with great people’ the likes of Roddy
Mead, Michael Ensor, Bernie Gower
and Paul Robinson.
He wouldn’t be able to judge at the
highest level without an impressive
supporter, as Tony describes her, ‘very
astute’ his clerk or scribe wife Lindsey
has been a huge factor in Tony
reaching the standard he has, and for
the time that he’s been at it.
Hats off to you Tony Hargreaves,
congratulations on 50 years of judging.
You said it has always been about the
people, you’re one of the people that
make it great. And it doesn’t stop there,
Tony will be judging the short head
and yard at the Otamatea club in the
coming dog trial season. ~ Fiona

The FIRST CHRISTMAS MANGER SCENE
As a boy, one of my Christmas treats was to be taken by my
grandmother around the various large department stores in
Auckland- George Courts, John Courts, Rendells and the Farmers.
One of the attractions were the highly elaborate and imaginative
Christmas scenes set up in the shop front windows, with
Christmas trees and snow, and often with moving figures of elves and reindeer
and the other things traditionally associated with the festive season.
And always there was a manger scene, with Jesus lying in a straw-filled
cradle, surrounded by his mother, father, shepherds and (apparently having
arrived somewhat early) the three wise men bearing their gifts “from afar”.
I had always assumed that manger scenes like these date back to Biblical times,
which they do in essence, of course. But I only recently learned that the first
nativity scene was created by St Francis of Assisi, in a cave, in a small Italian
village called Grecio, on Christmas Eve around 1223.
According to Francis’ mediaeval biographer, St Bonaventure, Francis set up a
manger with hay and two live animals- an ox and an ass- and then invited the
villagers to come and view the scene, which they did, it is said, accompanied by
“a multitude of bright lights” and “harmonious hymns of praise”, where St
Francis preached about “the babe of Bethlehem”.
The occasion was so moving that Francis could hardly speak, and another
claimed, “he saw a beautiful little child asleep in that manger”.
May we all be blessed this Christmas, as was Francis back then, with a vision
of Christ to move us all to a kinder, gentler and more peaceful world.
