Sun, music and community support brought sell-out success for
the three-day Northern
Bass festival
held for the tenth time in Kaiwaka at New Year.
Pictured left: Waiting to wwoof from Eutopia on New Year's Day: Miranda Becker, Ella
Palmborg and Laura Rolandi
Experience and continuity in site management contributed to the Fuzen Entertainment event
and spun off economic benefits to area businesses and community groups.
Event producer Etienne Marais says preparation this December was "definitely harder after ...
six months of rain but in the end we were very lucky for the days of the festival."
Contractors were brought in to shore up internal roading and Thursday
brought traffic delays for some of the 11,000 crowd. However, the Lea-
bourn bus ferry on a loop from Mangawhai and the permit-based one-
way system on Settlement Road reduced the impact on locals.
"Buses moving people from Mangawhai obviously cut down on cars.
"
Northern Bass
is becoming a world event. It's as good a festival of
electronic music as you'd get. I'm proud of it," Etienne says.
Rural Design director Health Worsfold agrees wet weather made it hard-
er for Fuzen to restore the farm to pre-festival condition but other than
the wet and the abandoned tent issue everything was very positive.
Having daytime security done by local horse riders for a second year
was "very effective".
"Tent dumping is most concerning and happens at all festivals. The 'cheap tent issue' needs to be addressed with K-Mart
and The Warehouse." Festival-goer Ella Palmborg from Sweden says: "We enjoyed every moment ... The only bad thing
was the 'suuuper-long' queues." ~ HP

WEATHER
DECEMBER and 2022
I trust you all had a very Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Well! what a way to end the year,
December’s rainfall was looking at
being not too high, until we had 44ml
which
came
from
that
huge
thunderstorm on the 22 December.
The total at our place for December was
184.5ml over 15 days.
The highest rainfall I have recorded for
the month of December is 216ml over
11days in 2011.
The least I have recorded for the month
of December was in 2015 with only
27ml falling over 5 days.
2022:
The total rainfall at our place for
2022 was 2130ml over 185 days, which
I am sure will come as no surprise to
anyone to hear that it is the highest
annual rainfall I have ever recorded.
I have some very interesting records
from Derek Mason in the Hakaru
Valley. His 2022 total was 1928ml over
213 days. This is the highest Derek has
recorded in 46 years. The lowest annual
rainfall for Hakaru was in 2015 with
1061ml over 151 days.
The highest rainfall Derek recorded in
any one month was 587ml in July 1998
over 24 days, which was basically 1/3
of the annual rainfall. The lowest
rainfall he has recorded was in February
2020 with 4ml falling in 1 day. The
Hakaru Valley is approximately 3 kms
from our place (as the crow flies), but
the difference in rainfall is quite
interesting.
Buckle up for the storm, people.
From Derek on the morning of 5
January - he recorded 45ml overnight,
and we recorded 97ml. Hard to fathom,
but that’s how it goes!
Until next month! Cheers, Karen

FOR PEOPLE
(YOUNG & OLDER)
INTERESTED IN
GARDENING
Flowers, Vegetables, Herbs
and Fruit Trees
There is nothing more relaxing and
satisfying than seeing the fruits of your
labour flourish.
Finally the weather has settled and is
giving Northland a summer!
To keep moisture in the soil it is now
time to mulch around the varieties of
fruit trees - citrus, pip fruit, etc.
A close friend of mine uses dags - not
his own of course, but those of his
sheep, to keep the moisture in the
ground and ‘feed’ his fruiting trees and
shrubs. If dags aren't available
untreated bark
mulch or grass clippings
will do just as well.
Water the vegetable garden and flower
beds early in the morning or in the
evening to avoid evaporation.
FEBRUARY
VEGETABLE
PLANTING
-
include
cabbage,
cauliflower , broccoli, lettuce and silver
beet; add a side dressing of general
fertiliser to help growth.
FLOWERS - regularly dead-head
dahlias and roses to entice new buds to
form. With roses cut above a 5-leaflet
leaf - not a 3-leaflet.
HERBS can be harvested and dried for
winter use in soups and stews. = thyme,
sage and oregano are a must! Parsley
seed can be sown now to provide fresh
leaves later.
Finally, use all non-diseased refuse for
composting, then return it to the soil.
A Handy Hint from Bill Ward’s book
“Edible Garden”: ‘Garlic repels aphids
and keeps away vampires (when was
the last time you
saw one?). Garlic
planted
around
roses
works
wonders, and the
leaves are great
added to salads
and sandwiches.’
Until next month,
happy gardening.

LOCAL DOG TRIALS
The Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club
had its AGM last week, with a great
turn out of members it was a chance to
celebrate the successes of the last
season and get everything arranged for
the upcoming season and the club’s
annual trial in April. Club Patron, Bob
Sceats mentioned it might have been
the largest meeting attendance in the
club’s recent history, which is very
positive given the club is in its 73rd
year.
President Scott McRae acknowledged
all the club committee, supporters,
helpers, sponsors, landowners, farm
managers and sheep providers for their
involvement in last year’s trial, which
was dedicated as the Robert Hastie
memorial trial, to long time club
member and secretary for over 50 years
who passed away in November 2021.
While the trial seems like a simple two-
day event, it takes a dedicated team of
passionate volunteers to pull it all
together.
The club has
seen
some
outstanding
performances
and selections
during
2022
and
coming
into the 2023
season. Many of the clubs’ competitors
compete as well as judge events
nationally. In the judging space Duncan
Gilligan, pictured, was celebrated for
successfully judging the North Island
Tux Handy Dog event in Taupo in
December, Tony Hargreaves for
achieving the impressive total of 50
years of judging and coming into 2023
Scott McRae has been selected to judge
the straight hunt at the North Island
Championships in May, carrying on an
impressive history of club members
judging island and New Zealand
championships.
With the club trial just a couple of
months away, much of the meeting was
focused on what is required to
successfully run another event, judges,
sheep, food, entries, sponsors, and
everything in between. The club has a
committed group of volunteers, who
love to see the event succeed, as Scott
said in his president’s report, ‘we had a
successful 2022, let’s have a great
2023’.
There was some excitement at the
meeting with the season about to start,
as this Auckland Anniversary weekend
(what is known as) the club hill season
kicks off with the first Northland
Centre sheep dog trial at the Helensville
club, with many of the club competitors
and dogs making the trip south to
compete.
The Molesworth club trial is to be
held on Friday April 21st and
Saturday April 22nd at 616 Oneriri
Road, you’re welcome to come along
and watch, if you’d like to be involved
or know a bit more. ~ Fiona

Oh, I’ll give a little bit of my life
for you
So, give a little bit
Oh, give a little bit of your time to
me
Now’s the time that we need to
share
So find yourself, we’re on our
way back home
Lines taken from Supertramp - Give a Little Bit
Times are tough for many people, the
cost of living has increased, and it
doesn’t look to be getting better in a
hurry. It’s a current worldwide problem
and while we have faced this before in
New Zealand and around the world, it
does not make putting good food on the
table any easier for many. Petrol and
food are both significant cost items
when you live in rural Northland, as
most of us reading the Press do.
For many of us however, due to the
good luck of our birth, we are not as
bad off as others.
Why is that? Yes, we work hard, but so
do many others who are not so well off.
Even as a poor student and poor back
packer I always knew that by the luck
of my birth I would be ok. I always had
family who could help me if I needed it.
I had a good education and good food
and support all my life. So, I have never
felt poor. So yes, I am very lucky, and
because of that, it is easy to make good
choices that continue to support my
good fortune.
I know that some people believe that
less well-off people or people living in
poverty (let’s say it as it is)
are to blame for their
misfortune. If only they
budgeted better, spent less
money on whatever is seen
as unnecessary by the
more well-off, just work a bit harder,
then they would be ok like us. My
social conscience alongside my work in
health and social services shows me this
is mostly untrue.
We are not short of food in New
Zealand, (thanks farmers and market
gardeners) but many people do not have
enough to eat including about 200,000
children. I believe that is not acceptable
and I take my hat off to those around
the country working to change that.
Successive governments have not done
enough over the years to remedy this
situation and to even up the playing
field.
New Zealanders are known to be very
generous people. Here in Otamatea I
want to shout out to ‘Whakatipu - Grow
Paparoa’ who use their community
gardens to feed locals, some of which is
distributed by Otamatea Community
Services so that nobody in our area
needs to be hungry; and to Te Pataka O
Kaiwaka Foodbank. This is a great
effort by many and is rewarding for the
volunteers as well. Giving to others
come back in spades!
My commitment for 2023 is to share
some of my good fortune with others.
What will you do, to give a little bit and
show you care?
Libby Jones
Looking forward to a more just 2023

means to bring pressure to bear on
County Council, as they fear that
Maungaturoto will prevent them
tapping

stream.
We
afterwards met Worley. After lunch we
met again at solicitor’s office. We left
town about 5pm and back at Kaiwaka at
7pm. Were fairly satisfied with result of
trip.”

KAIWAKA SCHOOL
NEWS
From Term Four 2022: ‘It is with sadness that we say good bye to four staff
members:
I would like to say a big thank you to Phil Lees who taught at our school this
year. Phil is known for his sporting abilities and there was not a day where I
wouldn’t see his class outside playing sports or doing fitness activities. Phil also
has a passion for teaching literacy and under his teaching we saw a great
improvement in the students writing and the way they saw themselves as writers.
Thank you Phil for your commitment to our students and their learning.
We also have three of our teacher aides leaving at the end of the year.
Chris Harrison has been with us for 5 years and has worked amazingly with our
ORS funded students. Pat Buxton is leaving to work longer hours with a child at
Maungaturoto Primary School. Ann England has worked with our ORS students
and groups of students receiving extra help with their learning.
We will miss you all and wish you all the best with your new endeavours.’

HOLIDAYS WITH DOGS
Responsible pet activity is about choosing walking tracks and visiting nature
parks that permit dogs, and need-to-knows about boating, toileting and lead
etiquette.
Much as you may want to take your pup to your favourite lake or beach – not all
outdoor activities are pet-friendly. We cannot emphasise enough how important
it is to control your dog on the beach.
New Zealand has some of the rarest animals and most delicate ecosystems in the
world: NZ dotterel/tūturiwhatu, little penguins/kororā, red-billed gulls/tarāpunga,
and many others are declining in number. Unfortunately, these are put at risk by
pet owners who let their dogs run free in places where there’s wildlife. Where
are the local dog walking areas?
Mangawhai: the Kaipara District Council dog bylaw document is available on
their website which shows all the on/off leash and prohibited areas.
Lang’s, Waipu, Bream Bay: the
Whangarei District Council website lists
on/off leash and prohibited areas including
the changes over the summer holiday
period.
Log on to the DOC website to continue
reading their blog for more details on dog
parenting this summer.

MANGAWHAI ART TRAIL 2023 FEATURES A
KAIWAKA HUB
The 2023 Mangawhai Art Trail takes place on the weekend of 25 and
26 February
. A special feature of this year’s Art Trail is a Kaiwaka hub.
The Mangawhai Art Trail covers 32 artists across 17 different venues. The trail
leads from Kaiwaka to Mangawhai, with two separate venues in Kaiwaka.
A collective of 8 artists have come together to create the Kaiwaka Art Studio and
will be exhibiting at a venue in the collection of shops at 1925 State Highway –
thanks to the generosity of the owner of La Nonna’s Bakery. Pictured below:
Mel Juer and the Kaiwaka Venue -
come and see us when it is full of art.
The eight artists who will be
exhibiting as the Kaiwaka Art
Studio are Danielle Adams, Deva
Prem, Edie Chappell, Jay Allen,
Lynley Bradnam, Mike Hooton,
Mel Juer and Peter Bradburn.
Peter Panyoczki will be exhibiting
just along the road at his studio in
Gibbons Road.
“We are thrilled to bring so many
talented artists together in one place!”
says Mel Juer, coordinator of the
Kaiwaka Art Studio. “We hope people
will start the Art Trail in Kaiwaka, enjoy a coffee
and pastry at La Nonna’s and then follow the trail
to Mangawhai!”
In Mangawhai there is a hub of artists based
around the Village and another group closer to the
Heads.
The Art Trail artists cover a diverse range of work
including ceramics, photography, painting in oils,
watercolour, acrylics and all forms of sculpture.
One of the more unusual exhibits is at Devich
Road where the work includes lead drippings,
modified
rusty
steel and sand
cement sculpture.
The
Stylish
Collective,
exhibiting at the
Stylish
Homes
show home on
the corner of
Molesworth
Drive and Estuary Drive in Mangawhai, returns
to show the work of six artists.
To find out more about the Mangawhai Art Trail
check
out
the
website:
www.mangawhaiartists.co.nz . The Art Trail is free. Information including list of
venues, artists and indicative maps is downloadable from the website. The Trail is

BOOK REVIEW
Recently I've read
the Charlie Lager
series
by
Lina
Bengtsdotter, (1)
For the Missing,
(2) For the Dead,
and (3) For the
Lost. From For the
Missing:
"Nora's
daughter Annabelle
has
disappeared,
last seen on her
way home from a
party. Gullspång's
inexperienced
police are wilting
under the national
media spotlight -
and its residents
are desperate for
answers.
Stockholm
detective Charlie
Lager must return
home
to
find
Annabelle,
and
then get out of
town as soon as she
can.
Before
everyone discovers
the truth about
her..."
Do
read
these
books in order, this
is one series where
that's important for
the flow of the story. These were a
good read; Scandinavian fiction rarely
disappoints. These books are located on
the Rental Fiction shelves in the library.
See you in the library ~Wendy

HAPPY NEW YEAR
to you all!
2023 by the economists
has been touted as another
year of high
uncertainty
and
high
volatility.
However, let us look at
this from a slightly
different and lighter perspective – 2023
is a Leap Year and The Chinese Zodiac
animal for this Lunar New Year is the
Rabbit (and a lucky black rabbit this
year). This longer lunar year has two
Spring seasons. With this and the
luckiness of the Black Rabbit (black
denoting water which is seen as a lucky
element), 2023 is all about Double
Happiness! I like this prediction better
than the economists.
Getting back to the uncertainty and
volatility, whether you are a home
buyer, seller, investor, business person
or just Joe Blogs, remember that all
times end, whether they are good times
or bad times. We are best to focus on
the long-term goals rather than be
depressed by perhaps what we are
currently experiencing or are being told
we are experiencing.
The property market very much works
on the long-term, with historically
doubling in value over a 7-10 year
period. So, whether prices have and are
continuing to adjust downwards, as a
property owner, if you look at the long-
term picture you can expect decent
capital gain. As a buyer in this market,
strike now to buy well. Don’t wait for
news that we are at the bottom of the
fall as you will only know this once the
prices are on the rise.
Look around at the options, there are
some great deals to be had!
Wishing you all the very best for 2023 –
Kaye, Stewart and the Ray White team

ATTITUDE OF
GRATITUDE
Having an attitude of gratitude can be
life-changing.
They
say
being
purposefully grateful daily increases
your dopamine levels in your brain and
creates the need for your brain to have
more… so in effect the more you are
grateful the more you’ll find things to
be grateful for! ~ Anon

It is not happiness that brings us
