FEBRUARY 2023:
RAIN, WIND AND MORE RAIN!!
What amazing weather bombs we have come through, especially
on the 14th and 24th February! Still, count our blessings: our
transistor radio, our gas bottles - BBQ and hotplate, water from
our tanks, good torches, lanterns and even candles, AND
wonderful neighbours - especially those with a generator,
chainsaws, cell phone contact and a roast dinner! ~ LH

THE COMMUNITY COMES
TOGETHER
The last couple of weeks have seen some of the worst
conditions I have experienced. Wild weather high winds,
leaving downed trees, damaged roofs, slips, floods and
large periods of time without power in some areas.
The one thing that showed out was the way the
community came together. A big thank you to the
emergency services especially the Fire Brigade who
worked tirelessly at times in some very dangerous
conditions. Seeing people displaced from their houses
too damaged to stay in and clearing trees away from roads just some of the
duties they performed.
Then there were neighbours helping neighbours - organisations like the Revival
Church, Sports Assn, Kaiwaka Hall, St John staff and hall, Italian Bakery for
donating food to St John hall to hand out while it was open and others who
donated food to other organisations. Also, Beth and Barry for keeping Civil
Defence informed.
I spent a little time at St John hall and while there, a couple of Policemen called
in to see if there was anybody in need of help as they saw we were open. It was
a chance for them to catch a breath and a well-earned cuppa. After talking with
them one thing stood out and that was that although there were a number of
organisations helping it was a little confusing as to what was going on and
misinformation was being put out on social media, also

WEATHER
JANUARY 2023
Well, we certainly have had our share
of rain in the last half of 2022 and then
along came January 2023.
I stood in the pouring rain on the 27th
January, hoping to see and hear the
Elton John concert.
I even got wet feet in the bus on the
way to the venue – only to be told the
concert was understandably and
disappointingly cancelled.
Wet, wet, wet lawns, trees falling over
because their root system can’t hold on
to the soggy soil any longer and then
there was the horrible relentless wind
with it.
For the month of January, I
recorded 603ml over 16 days.
Derek Mason in the Hakaru Valley
recorded 450ml over 16 days.
I have heard reports from several other
people about their rainfall numbers
and they vary a little bit. Mangawhai
had nowhere near as much as
Kaiwaka.
January this year supersedes any
records I have ever recorded.
The last highest recording was in
2011 when we got 352ml.
The least amount recorded was in
2021 with a mere 9ml.
I can only hope that our Autumn might
be a little bit drier – however as I am
typing this I hear in the forecast, that
there is a tropical cyclone forming way
up in the north and heading for NZ,
beauty – just what we don’t need.
Our fruit trees have been hammered
and all the fruit was lost. The muggy
weather has ruined my tomatoes and I
hear that mine aren’t the only ones.
Take care of each other, folks.
Until next month!
Cheers, Karen
[We look forward to the next weather
report!]

KAIWAKA
AND HAKARU
CIVIL
DEFENCE
So far, we have been a very small team
of 2, with Wendy Howard posting
updates when she can. I don’t tend to
use the Civil Defence branding when I
do posts as I am not that techo and
think it is more important to get the
message out there where it needs to be.
We have been active nevertheless,
advising CD in Whangarei about needs
in our area.
We, along with Dianne from St Johns,
opened the St Johns Hall last Tuesday,
bringing down a generator to enable
people to charge their phones; using it
to keep a toaster going for people to eat
breakfast
etc.
We
have
been
instrumental in getting a small
generator in place at Hakaru for locals
there to charge devices and other
assistance is on the way for various
areas. Doing this important work in
emergencies is seldom glorious but is a
vital part of helping a community’s
recovery from emergency events.
We have had a couple of volunteers
come forward from this effort and will
be pleased to get a good-sized group
together in the near future. Once the
state of emergency has passed there
will be a debrief. After this, we will
hold a meeting of all interested people.
We would also like to take this
opportunity to thank Tawhiri Littlejohn
from the Kaiwaka Community Church
for all he has done, the ladies from the
KSA for opening up the showers, the
people in charge of the hall for
allowing use of the kitchen for meals
and Kirstie Brown from Kate’s Place
for making available charge points for
devices and for kindly receiving
donations of food etc for people in
need. Also, Ilia and Eve for the lovely
donation of the food they cooked, then
couldn’t sell because of the power
outage.
If I have forgotten anyone, I do
apologise. Lastly, we would like to
thank our wonderful communities of
Kaiwaka and Hakaru for all looking
out for each other, thereby making our
jobs easier. ~ Beth and Barry

THE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER
Continued from front page
the emergency services didn't have a
contact to get help for shelter and a
place to get meals etc for people who
were displaced.
At this month’s Kaiwaka Can
meeting this situation was discussed
and the group would like to facilitate
a meeting to organise a specific
group for the area that can co-
ordinate all the organisations and
work with Civil Defence. And to
have one source of information i.e.,
local Civil Defence Facebook page
to keep the community updated.
Emergency services would also have
one number to call for help or
information.
This group would also look at setting
up equipment to use in such events
like gas cookers, mattresses and
maybe a generator etc. Some of this
we have already acquired.
As I get ready to go to print Kaiwaka
Mangawhai is hit with another
deluge which turned out to be some
of the heaviest rain seen in the area.
This created absolute chaos around
the area with major flooding and
slips to most roads. Disrupting travel
plans and being stuck with no way to
get to their final destination, mainly
Mangawhai. Thanks to St John for
the use of their hall once more to
cater for around 40 to 45 people
giving bed and food. More pressure
was added when SH1 was closed at
around 2am and all traffic was turned
up Mangawhai Rd. Also, Ant and
Jess at Kaiwaka Four Square and
Raman and family at Caltex for
donations of food. It was also a
dramatic finish to the school day for
some students having to sleep at
school unable to return home.
Thanks to school staff and the many
who answered the call for bedding.
Well done, Kaiwaka!
A highlight and brief story of a
British couple who became stranded
treating it as an adventure and
couldn't speak highly enough to the
hospitality and help they received,
making a video of the staff and them
drinking tea at about 1am. Our local
Fire Chief even played a part turning
the ‘lights on to add to the video and
sending it off to family in the UK.
Kaiwaka has gone international!
Following the storms of the 14th and
24th February with all the damage to
roading and buildings around the
area it will take weeks if not months
to see thing back to some normality
and there will be inconveniences. I
urge people to be patient and work
with all the organisations to make
their job as smooth as they can.
Remember we are not the only ones
who are waiting to see results and
there are only so many staff to go
around but I hope all are safe and
take care.

more years.

HAVOC
Well the weather has certainly played
havoc with the start of our year. When
we look at some of the other parts of
the country, we have come off
relatively lightly. Yes, power has been
off for an extended time for some
people, and trees been unrooted (plenty
of firewood this year) but I am
concerned that we place so much
importance on cellphones and other
media that we have limited our means
of communication when the power is
off. We really must learn to be more
resilient.
I believe the President’s BBQ went
very well. President Les has such a
nice place for us to gather. However,
our first catered meeting had to be
cancelled because of the storm.
RYLA
For the first time in a number of years
we have had an applicant to attend the
Rotary Youth Leadership Course.
This is held early May at the Muriwai
surf club (hopefully if it is not too
badly damaged) and is not only a great
place to develop leadership skills but
many long-term friendships also come
out of it. We look forward to the report
back later in the year.
MANGAWHAI ROTARY
Another exciting piece of news is the
fact that Mangawhai Rotary, which
was a Satellite club of our own,
became a Chartered club in its own
right on 8th February and will have its
first official meeting as a stand-alone
club on 28th February. We would like
to congratulate this club for making
this step and we look forward to
hearing of their activities in the future.
I am sure we will continue to
help when more hands are
needed. It was unfortunate that
the golf ball drop of the Sandsational
event could not take place on the
allotted day (Because of the massive
slip behind the surf club) but this will
happen sometime in the near future so
don’t throw away your tickets (until
you have seen the results).
PAPAROA A&P SHOW
A number of us were able to help
Paparoa Lions manning the gates (and
working on the indoor section) at the
Paparoa A&P show. It was unfortunate
that a shower on the Friday night made
parts of the venue quite damp and a
further shower on the day was not
helpful.
However, there did seem to be a large
crowd in attendance, and all spoken to
enjoyed their day.
Remember, if you would like to join
us, or you think there is a possibility
we may be able to help you, please
don’t hesitate to get in touch -

‘A LONG DAY AT THE OFFICE’
Tuesday, July 16th 1963
From the diary of Brian Linnell – Chair of
Otamatea County Council
“Up at 4am and got away at 5.15. Met Trevor Smith &
Jim (Council Staff) at Kaiwaka on our way to
Wellington. Arrived at Whenuapai about 7.15am.
Plane took off late at 8am. Owing to weather, Rongatai
was closed, and we were landed at Palmerston North.
A bus trip of 3 1/2 hours via Paraparaumu. We arrived
at Parliament Buildings about 1.15pm and found that
our appointment was arranged for 2.30pm (Our
original appointment had been at 11 am).
We had a meal at the Railway Station and Harold
(Council) joined us just before our appointment. He
had gone by train. Mr Goosman *(Government) gave
us a very good hearing and complimented us on our
submissions. He said that if our story was true, our
complaints would be rectified. Mr Mackay and Mr Halley were in attendance.
We had about 1 1/2 hours of interview.
We then had to report to the Air Centre and were told we would be flown back
to Palmerston North, but they couldn’t give us a time. We hung about until after
5pm then were bussed to Paraparaumu, where we had a cup of tea and stayed
nearly an hour. Then on to Palmerston North arriving at 8.45. We waited ‘till
10pm for takeoff. A good flight and we landed about 11.30pm. Home and bed
by 1.30am.
Quite enough for one day.”

KAIWAKA WATER PIPE
Pictured is the Kaiwaka water pipe that takes
water to all the houses south of the town crossing
the stream north of the Three Furlongs two
hundred, metres east of Kaiwaka Bridge:
Friday 24 February, 4pm - the pipe is floating
and catching debris.
Saturday 25 February, 10am - the pipe can be
seen draped in the totara tree (dotted arrow).
The arrow from post to post gives some idea of
the height of the water. On a normal day one
wouldn’t be able to see the clear water running in
the hollow.

RAIN, FLOODING, AND ALL
THE REST
I hope you are getting back to 'normal'
after all the weather events we've had
lately. As I type this last Friday, it is
pouring down again, a week and a half
after Cyclone Gabrielle.
If you have library items checked out
at the moment, and the weather and
conditions have impacted your ability
to read or return them, let me know
and we can extend your borrowing
period. The library system has already
extended the dates for everything that
was due between 7 and 28 February,
from when we had to close temporarily
the other week. At the very least, don't
panic - just let us know.
VACANCIES IN THE TEAM OF
VOLUNTEERS
Would you like to join our friendly
team of library volunteers? You need
to have basic Windows skills, and have
regular access to your emails. There
are a few days available at the
moment;
send
me
an
kaiwaka.library@gmail.com to get in
touch.
TUTU COLLECTION OF THINGS
Have you taken a look at the new Tutu
Collection yet? These are 'things' that
you can borrow from the library for
free, just like a book. It includes card
games, board games, programmable
robots, a knitting machine, a sewing
machine, telescopes, and more. Just
added to the collection is a magnet
activity set (contains small parts that
could be a choking hazard) and a
compact telescope.
You must place a hold to borrow these
items, so they can be sent to us from
Dargaville Library. A search at
Enterprise* of just the word Tutu will
bring a whole lot of results
And did I mention that it is FREE to
borrow these items?
AUTUMN CATALOGUE
The Autumn 2023 will be with us very
soon. Watch out for it appearing on the
library counter, and take your free
copy. I've had a sneak peek at it, and
there's some great reads to be found.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently, I've read Better The Blood
by Michael Bennett. "Hana Westerman
is a tenacious Māori detective juggling
single motherhood and the pressures of her
career in Auckland’s Central Investigation
Branch. When she’s led to a crime scene by
a mysterious video..."
This was an
excellent read - I'd have finished it in
one sitting if I hadn't had meetings
scheduled
the
afternoon,
I
started it. Bennett
is
an
award-
winning
screenwriter, and
this is his first
novel. The book
is on the Rental
Fiction shelves in
the library.

GARDENING
FOR THE
YOUNG & OLD
Autumn is fast approaching! “Season
of mist and mellow fruitfulness”.
Who wrote the Ode to Autumn? Never
mind I do know it wasn’t James K
Baxter!
Well, so much for the ’Season of mist
and fruitfulness’ - in comes ’Hale’
followed closely by ’Gabrielle’.
Absolute waterlogged ground and
massive destruction, battered shrubs,
ornamental trees and garden plots -
both flower and vegetable.
The clean-up begins: smallish sticks,
leaves, etc can be raked into piles and
then chopped up by running the motor
mower (with catcher on) over them -
great mulch for the compost bin.
We in the mid-north got off
comparatively lightly following the
storm, however fruit and vegetables
will be in short supply and very
expensive. The answer is simple -
grow your own. You do not need a big
area around your dwelling.
If you haven’t a vege patch you can
create one very simply by going to see
Hayden and Susan at ‘Twinkle Tow n’
Tyre’
and
asking for
their
old
tyres. You
only
need
two or three
placed
on
top of each
other
and
filled with
bags
of
compost/
vegetable
mix;
add
some blood
and bone fertiliser and you have an
easy to manage vege garden.
What to plant? Easy - broccoli, bok
choi, cauliflower, cabbage, winter
lettuce, leeks and sow parsley seed to
provide fresh leaves this winter and
spring. Parsley is full of goodness with
both minerals and vitamins.
Finally, this month it is time to pick
your plums, apples, peaches and other
stone fruit - if they haven’t been blown
off in the storms.
Continue picking your runner beans
and have a dig in the kumara patch
with your hand to see how the tubers
are progressing.
Until next month, have fun in the
garden. . ~ Mr Jo

Kaye McElwain from Ray

Mangawhai
has
lived in the area for 17
years and has worked in
real estate for more than
two decades as an agent and business
owner.
Today she gives some top tips on how
to weatherproof your property.
Northland may have been the first
region to feel the wrath of cyclone
Gabrielle, but compared to other parts
of the country we didn’t get the lashing
unleashed elsewhere.
Despite power outages, all our current
listings weathered the storm and were
able to continue with buyer viewings.
With weather forecasters warning other
significant weather events could be on
the horizon, what can you do to future-
proof your home for a storm, especially
if you have plans to put it on the
market?
Here are a few pointers, which will
protect your property and also help it
appeal to future buyers who will now
be more discerning when it comes to
flood and storm protection.
●
Understand how water moves
around your land and home
Ideally, you’ll want water to run
away from your dwelling and not
accumulate around it. If you notice
water accumulating, you may want
to look into ways of correcting the
slope, or rock swales to assist water
flow away. This also applies to
gravel driveways.
●
Planting for wetlands or
flood zones
If your property does have a
wetland or is located within a flood
zone, minimise stock grazing in
problem areas, ensure there are no
structures
that
could
cause
blockages and get advice on what
plantings work best to assist free
draining.
●
Keep Drains, Gutters, and
Downspouts Clean
Ensure that the drains, gutters, and
downspouts are clear. This involves
clearing them of any debris like
leaves, dirt, sticks, garbage, etc. so
that water can flow freely.
●
Water Tank Access
To ensure that your family can
access water particularly in a power
cut, it is advisable to ensure you
have an ancillary water tank with a
manual access valve (tap) or have
such a valve installed between your
primary tank and the water pump.
●
Elevate and Secure Any
Outside Equipment
Just like you should keep indoor
equipment safely elevated above
predicted flood levels, the same
goes for outdoor equipment. Things
like
air
conditioning
units,
generators, fuel tanks, etc. should
not only be elevated above flood
levels, but they should also be
anchored and secured to something
so they cannot break free or float
away.
●
Do Some Dry-Proofing
Performing some dry-proofing work
around the house can go a long way.
This is done by applying some
sealing materials or coatings around
vulnerable areas such as walls,
doors, and window creases.
●
Maintain Your Garden
Ensure all trees in your yard are cut
back with dead branches moved
away from your house.
Don’t hesitate to call me if you have
any questions regarding real estate or
what’s going on in our local property
market. Take care, Kaye 027 215 2016

HOW TO FUTURE-PROOF YOUR HOME

THE LAST NOTE
FOR DOUG
Doug Leslie who passed away on 16
February, was an avid reader and
supporter of the Kaiwaka Bugle - he
regularly phoned to make comments
on the articles included.
Doug, born in March 1932, was one
of Kaiwaka’s most senior citizens and
a wonderful mine of information.
A farmer, he was a long time rugby
administrator, especially with Eastern
and Otamatea
rugby;
his

with the KSA
saw him part
of
