ALEXANDER BRODIE SHAND WWII 40174
Born 6/3/1920. War Veteran.
Early in 1941 Alex signed up with the 22nd
Battalion in Wellington. After initial
training at Trentham Camp, he embarked
for North Africa in March 1941
immediately after his 21st birthday.
Alex was captured twice in Africa, firstly at
Matruh where he came face to face with
Field Marshall Rommel who pulled up in a
tank and instructed his soldiers to make sure
the Kiwis had water and food, which didn’t
happen! On this occasion he was freed
shortly after by the advancing South
Africans.
Late in July 1942 Alex was recaptured at
Ruweisat Ridge and was shipped to a camp
in Northern Italy.
In October 1943 the Italians surrendered
and Alex spent several months with the Partisans moving
around Northern Italy.
Eventually he was “shopped” to the Germans and sent to
Stalag 1VB near Dresden. On arrival at the camp, which
held 20,000 prisoners, he was greeted at the gate by a
fellow Kiwi who asked his name. Shand, the fellow said,
‘I think there is already a Shand here” and was told which
hut to look for.
Sure enough, there he found his older brother John who
had bailed out of a Lancaster some months before! Alex
exchanged
identities
with a Canadian Flight
Sergeant Grant in John’s hut and the
brothers remained together until they were
released by the Russian forces just prior to
the war’s end.
Alex Shand is currently living at Rangiora
Road with his daughter Pip McDowall and
husband Graeme.
Alex turned 103 in March this year and is
enjoying the Oneriri community. When
ANZAC Day comes, he will be sitting and
remembering an ‘extraordinary wartime
experience’.
The Hakaru and Districts Memorial RSA will be
holding an ANZAC Commemoration on Tuesday
25th April - details on page 5.
EASTER
Easter! It’s the central
celebration of the Christian
Church
and
is
much
misunderstood because it
deals with a strange concept -
resurrection. Who knows
where bunnies and chocolate
came from, but hey, we enjoy them too!
Resurrection (the physical coming to life
again of someone who had been dead) is
what the scriptures claim happened to Jesus
three days after he was killed on a wooden
cross by Roman soldiers.
In spite of many written accounts of people
who witnessed Jesus alive after he was
killed, we struggle with the idea. Dead
people normally stay dead!
However, for the church through the ages,
the resurrection of Jesus remains central.
For me it was never a problem as once I
accepted the existence of God, I knew all
kinds of miraculous events were likely to
be associated with him.
Boxers talk about telescoping a punch, that
slight movement of the shoulder in such a
manner that their opponent reads it before it
happens.
Likewise, the resurrection points towards
the future renewal of creation, the final
defeat of death, in fact the resurrection of
all humans at some future stage when
Christ returns to wrap things up in a
glorious unification of heaven and earth. In
short, the
resurrection
signals the
inauguration of the Kingdom of God, which
was Jesus’ central message.
Resurrection reverses the natural order. It
turns despair into hope, sorrow into joy.
That is what Easter means to Christians.
None of this happens without Jesus. He is
central to it all because this ‘new creation’
was God’s plan for us all along!
This message of hope speaks to us all.
When we are going through tough times,
it’s worth remembering that there is light at
the end of the tunnel. A ‘happy Easter’ is
really a hopeful, even a joyful Easter!

Priest-in-Charge of the Mangawhai & Paparoa
Mission Districts.

success in their deadlift and chest press competition on Saturday
And congratulations to Toa Henderson on shearing 911 lambs in ONE day!

We were saddened by the sudden death of Selwyn Wright, and send our
thoughts to family and friends.
Thank you to Alex Shand and his family for sharing some of his WWI

WEATHER
FEBRUARY
I trust WELL!!!!!! Just when we
thought the North Island couldn’t take
any more rain, along came February
and an uninvited visitor by the name of
Gabrielle.
The month started off with 62mm on
the first day, then 10 days later after
41mm over 8 days, we got another
58mm, then 61mm, then 150mm plus
other smaller amounts between these
days of heavy rain. 7 days later along
came
the
weather
bomb
thunderstorm which delivered another
246mm, then 2 days later another
71mm of rain which fell in 1 and a
quarter hours. By this time our feet
were needing to be webbed to be able to
walk on our lawn.
The total at our place for February
was a whopping 702mm – I know
crazy numbers for a Summer month.
On a good note we did get 10 days of
sun with no rain at all.
The 702mm fell over 18 days. I’m
contemplating buying some rice plants
for the bottom lawn lol. On the 24th
(the day of the weather bomb) I was in
Whangarei and got a message from a
friend, saying there had been 90mm of
rain in an incredibly short time. A few
minutes later she facetimed me to say it
was 120mm and counting. Meantime in
Whangarei, we had beautiful sunshine
and not a sign of rain anywhere. As we
were coming home however, we could
see the forked lightning and even heard
the thunder over the vehicle engine and
road noise. Road damage resulting from
that rain was huge and still being fixed.
Derek Mason in the Hakaru Valley had
a total of 601.5mm over 15 days. A
difference of 100mm in such a short
distance.
The driest February I have recorded
was in 2020 with a total of 7.5mm. The
previous highest rainfall for February
was in 2004 with a total of 293mm.
So far for March we are up to 6 days of
fine weather. Fingers crossed for a few
more. My heart goes out to the poor
folks living in the Hawks Bay. Take
care folks.
Until next month! Cheers, Karen

ST PAUL’S,
KAIWAKA
MANY THANKS to Tulip Hire for
their generous digger work fixing the
drainage problems around the St Paul’s
car park recently. With the recent
floods, water was flowing
under the church, but this
has
thankfully
been
remedied. The car park is
used by many people,
including Archie Bull hall
hirers and, most days, by
parents and school children.
HUGE THANKS also to
Marc Olsen for his years of
regular
mowing
and
trimming around the Church
and car park, especially
important for large events
such as weddings and
funerals. We are very
grateful for Marc’s ongoing
community service.

“DO YOU KNOW
ABOUT
OSTOMATES?”
An Ostomy Society is
a non-profit
organisation which aims to assist in the
rehabilitation of people who have
undergone bowel or bladder surgery
resulting in a colostomy, ileostomy or
urostomy. These people have adopted
the name of being an “Ostomate”.
It is also the first link with a group of
people who have banded together to
help one another and not to be alone,
that their experiences are not unique
and there are answers to their questions
and problems.
You may like to think about being a
member of your nearest “Ostomy
Group”, and you will meet other people
who have lived with similar problems.
At the meetings we may be able to help
solve problems you may have.
Ostomy Group members are not
medical people, although we each
know a fair bit about this type of
surgery after a while.
Northland Ostomy Society is part of
the Federation of New Zealand Ostomy
Societies Inc. with affiliation to the
International Ostomy Association.

‘A SCRAP OF PAPER
JUST a little scrap of paper
In a yellow envelope,
And the whole world is a ruin,
Even Hope.’
“Geoffrey
Studdert-Kennedy
was born in 1893
in Yorkshire. He
moved
from
being vicar at St
Paul’s Worcester,
to being a WWI
army chaplain. He was well loved,
particularly by those of the lower ranks
and was legendary for handing out
cigarettes - hence the name Woodbine
Willie - Woodbines, being the common
man’s cigarette. He was no ‘other-
worldly’ padre. He often ran into no
man’s land, under fire to help the
wounded and was awarded the Military
ross for gallantry. He died in 1929,
aged 46…
… these pages are a vivid record of war
and the emotions it produced in front-
line soldiers… In “A Scrap of Paper” in
just four lines, he sums up for all time
what it is to be told of the loss of a
son…” from the back cover of ‘The
Unutterable
Beauty’
poems
by
Woodbine Willie.
Peter Linnell shares these poems by GA
Studdert-Kennedy with Easter and
Anzac in mind:
THE SPIRIT
When there ain't no gal to kiss you,
And the postman seems to miss you,
And the fags have skipped an issue,
Carry on.
When ye've got an empty belly,
And the bulley's rotten smelly,
And you're shivering like a jelly,
Carry on.
When the Boche has done your chum in,
And the sergeant's done the rum in,
And there ain't no rations comin',
Carry on.
When the world is red and reeking,
And the shrapnel shells are shrieking,
And your blood is slowly leaking,
Carry on.
When the broken battered trenches,
Are like the bloody butchers' benches,
And the air is thick with stenches,
Carry on.
Carry on,
Though your pals are pale and wan,
And the hope of life is gone,
Carry on.
For to do more than you can,
Is to be a British man,
Not a rotten 'also ran,'
Carry on..
WHAT'S THE USE OF A CROSS TO 'IM?
PARSON says I'm to make 'im a cross
To set up over 'is grave,
'E's buried there by the Moated Grange,
And I 'ad a damn close shave,
But 'e were taken and I were left,
And why, it's a job to see,
For 'e 'ad a wife and some bonnie kids,
And me--well, there's only me.
And what's the use of a cross to 'im?
'E weren't a religious man,
'E said no prayers and 'e sang no 'ymns--
I'll make this do if I can.
It's all full o' notches--an awkward piece,
But I'll see what a knife'll do.
I allus were one to respec' the dead,
And 'e were a good pal too.
'E weren't a religious man, not 'im,
Far as that goes--nor am I.
I wonder what odds religion makes
When a feller comes to die.
It's a curious thing is death, ye know.
When we was back there at rest,
'E were singin' 'is song--and takin' 'is glass,
And 'avin' 'is fun wiv the best.
'E weren't no boozer though, mind ye that,
'E were sound uv 'is wind and limb,
'E were 'ard as a nail--a fighting lad,
A daisy to scrap were Jim.
But 'e'll fight no more--'e's gorn aht West
Wiv a great big 'ole in 'is back,
'E's pushin' up daisies by Moated Grange--
Now where did I put that tack?
IT'S HARD TO BE A CARPENTER
I wonder what He charged for chairs at
Nazareth?
And did they try to beat Him down,
And boast about it in the town?
"I got it cheap, for half a crown,
From that mad carpenter!"
And did they promise and not pay?
Put it off to another day?
Oh, did they break His heart that way,
My Lord the Carpenter?
I wonder did He have bad debts?
And did He know my fears and frets?
The Gospel writer here forgets
To tell about the Carpenter.

BASKETBALL
Tribal Wars Tournament
Young Kotiro Ballers here is
your opportunity to represent Kaipara
Basketball Association.
Girls games: Tuesday 4 April at
Kaiwaka Sports Assn. Gym. Under 11s
at 4.30pm and Under 13s at 5pm.
Details of the Boys Trials will be
coming soon.
Coming King’s Birthday Weekend
our Under 11s and Under 13s get the
chance to ball.
What
is
the
Tribal
Wars
Tournament?
Tribal Wars is a Northland Basketball's
own 2-day basketball tournament
focussed on providing basketball
opportunities that are a level above
local competition. It also exposes
players to a tournament like atmosphere
and format.
The tournament includes teams from
Kaitaia Basketball Assn, Mid North,
Hokianga, Whangarei, Kaipara and
Hibiscus Coast Basketball Association.
It is a great opportunity for Kaipara to
develop our players, coaches and
referees. So when we are asked to host
basketball events, we have a greater
collective knowledge on how to do so.
This year the Under 11's and 13's
Tournament will be held over Kings
Birthday Weekend. More details to
follow when they are released.
For more information see Kaipara
Basketball Association Facebook page.

LOCAL DOG
TRIALISTS PERFORM
AT NORTHLAND
CENTRE
CHAMPIONSHIPS
With the sheep dog trial season in full
swing, it’s been great to see some of
our locals achieving notable results
around the region in the last few weeks.
The 10th – 12th March was the main
event for Northland, at the Mangonui
Club Trial, this year the host of the
Northland Centre Championships. Over
the four club events, the top five
competitors go into a final run off for
the centre championship, their points
from both runs are combined and
winners crowned.
This year, our two local club presidents
took out top honours on the hunt
courses. Tony Comins (president of the
Otamatea Sheep Dog Trial club) and BJ
with the win in the straight hunt, with
Scott McRae (Molesworth Sheep Dog
Trial club president) with Chad taking
out the zigzag hunt. In the heading
events,
Murray
Child
(Maungakaramea) had an outstanding
result with the double, with Bruce and
Nell in the long and short head
respectively. Kaiwaka local and
Otamatea club member, Peter Walker
with heading dog Deb (in just her first
competition season), was fifth in the
long head. Scott (McRae) featured
strongly in the heading results with
George, winning the long head in the
club trial, then finishing with a fourth in
the long head, and second in the short
head.
Congratulations to Tony, Scott and
Peter, great results!
*Come along to the club trials;

MAUNGATUROTO &DISTRICTS ROTARY
CONGRATULATIONS
First
of
all,
congratulations on
Mangawhai
Rotary becoming
an official club in
their own right.
Six of us, as the
sponsoring club,
were able to join
them on the 28
February.
The
leaders in our
District endeavour
to support all Clubs and they showed up
in force for this auspicious occasion.
Apart from the chartering of the Club,
which has 22 members, the two
instigators received Paul Harris Fellow
Awards
(An
award
given
for
exceptional
commitment
to
a
community). Dennis Emsley has
effectively been the leader of the Club
initiative and Grahame Carbery (the
Commodore) has been the leader in the
sailing initiative which now has 9 boats
and several families have decided that
sailing is a good option for them.
PARK REPAIR
By the time you read this we will have
completed a working bee on Nikau
Grove, in Whaka street, Maungaturoto.
The tracks in this little haven have
suffered from the heavy rain so we will
be working on the worst affected areas
by laying limestone. When that has had
a chance to settle, we will look at
putting more metal on the track. Broken
branches and weeds will be removed at
the same time. It has been noted that
some cyclists are using the area, which
is fine, but we would appreciate them
keeping on the track as there is a large
amount of damage done to regrowth
when people deviate from the path.
DRIVER MENTORING
We have had good news this
month with two people being
willing to put their hands up for
Driver Mentoring. This will mean that
we can process more students as well as
lighten the workload for all. We have
also learnt over the past month that
Dargaville is taking Restricted licence
bookings, but these tests will only
conducted on a Monday.
STUDENT EXCHANGES
The ongoing effect of student
exchanges was made evident to me
during the week. 45 years ago, a student
from Tumut in Australia, spent a term
with a local family, the Needhams and
in the following term, their daughter
went to Tumut. This relationship has
continued through the years and a week
or so ago this woman visited her twin
and the pair of them came to
Maungaturoto. What she enjoyed most
was visiting places that had been
familiar to her then, and catching up
with her NZ “parents”, Margaret and
Ross. Then, as now, she could not get
over how green the area was because
her community if very barren. Most of
the Rotary exchanges went on hold due
to Covid. However, we are back in
having reciprocal visits, but these tend
to be for a year now.
QUOTE
We have a parting thought at the
conclusion of each meeting. This week
it was a Jimi Hendrix quote
: “When
the power of love overcomes the
love of power, the world will know
peace.”
Remember, if you would like to join us,
or you think there is a possibility we
may be able to help you, please don’t
hesitate to get in touch – Eileen

KAIWAKA LIBRARY GARDENING
for the YOUNG
& OLD
The months do fly by!
We are well into Autumn, however the
temperature – both the soil and air are
warm.
Keep dead heading your roses to get
more beautiful blooms right through
until mid-May.
What needs to be done this month?
Dahlias need to be lifted for storage or
add mulch if to be left in the ground.
Some flowers that can be planted now
are:
calendulas,
forget-me-nots,
wallflowers,
pansies,
polyanthus,
primulas.
And don’t forget the spring bulbs. It is
time to plant daffodils, freesias and
tulips.
Iceland poppies planted now will give a
wonderful display in late winter and
spring.
Many herbs can be sown now. Last
month’s column mentioned to sow
parsley for fresh winter/spring leaves.
This month sow the seeds of sage,
thyme, chives, oregano and marjoram.
Make sure you harvest basil before the
cold weather sets in. Basil can be
frozen – blanche it for 30seconds first
or dry it and store.
More vegetable seedlings to plant:
beetroot, brussel sprouts, silver beet,
spinach and spring onions. I have left
out swedes and turnips - you could
grow them for your cattle if you want*!
Feijoas are now ready. Rake up under
the bushes and lay straw or old hay so
the fruit has a soft landing when it falls.
Fruit trees can benefit from a copper
spray now, plus a dressing of general
fertiliser.
A handy hint from Bill Ward’s “Edible
Garden” – never use dry fertilisers on
trees grown in containers. The feeding
roots are near the surface and will burn.
Finally, did you know Cleopatra bathed
in rosewater, slept on a bed of lavender
and dined on nasturtiums!
Until April, great gardening. ~ Mr Jo
KAIWAKA SCHOOL
NEWS
‘Thank you, parents, for your support to run the Senior over-night Noho Marae
this year. It is the first Senior Noho we have had since the COVID lockdowns.
This is a really exciting event which will involve lots of learning of tikanga in the
beautiful setting of Otamatea marae.
Congratulations to Katherine Brown who is now the ‘Across School Teacher’ for
our Coast-to-Coast Community of Learning Ka Hui Ako. This position means
that Katherine will be working with all the schools involved in our Ka Hui Ako -
Mangawhai Beach School, Tomarata School, Maungaturoto School, Paparoa
School and Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Ngāringaomatariki. She
will be off site two days a week and Karima Bencheikh, who
has taught at our school in the past, will be in Ruma Kawakawa
for those two days.
Please make sure all of the school gates are kept shut during
school time. We have a few students who are at risk if the gates
are left open. ~ Sharlene McCormick (Principal)
A reminder to please drop pupils down by the school pool /
KSA in the mornings. We need the carpark for the buses and
for our children with accessibility needs.

BOOK REVIEW
Recently,
I've
read ‘Everything
Changes’
by
Stephanie
Johnson. "Buying
a rundown motel
to start a new life
- what could
possibly
go
wrong?" It's set
largely in the
Brynderwyn hills
north
of
Kaiwaka, at a
fictitious motel,
so some of the landscape is familiar. It's
a good read about people trying to get
their lives into "order", and its not
going to plan. This book is on the
Rental Fiction shelves.
See you in the library ~Wendy

WEATHERING THE
REAL ESTATE
STORM
Kaye McElwain from Ray
White Mangawhai has lived in
the area for 18 years and has
worked in real estate for more
than two decades as an agent
and business owner.
Today she explains why Kaipara
is weathering the real estate
storm.
If you’re tuned into the media at the
moment, it’s easy to get sucked into the
real estate doom and gloom report. In
reality, our patch of paradise in
Kaipara is punching above its weight
and bucking the trend of plummeting
prices. The latest stats from
realestate.co.nz show the median
house price in Kaiwaka has increased
by 18.5% compared to a year ago.
We can contribute some of this rise
with what’s happening in our
surrounding areas - particularly the
activity in neighbouring Mangawhai
being one of the key factors.
Mangawhai Central, being the
largest coastal development in NZ,
bodes well for continued migration
north into the area. The flow-on effect
of Mangawhai Central is one factor
balancing the national property market
slowdown, with demand for rentals and
homes to own in the area, including
Kaiwaka. Recent additions of a New
World supermarket and Bunnings
hardware store reflect the popularity
growth in this coastal holiday spot.
Once synonymous with surf breaks, the
area is now becoming known for golf,
locally and on the national and
international stage. The completion of
Tara Iti private members golf course
and Te Arai Links public golf course,
and the construction of a third
coastal
golf
course
on
the
Mangawhai, Kaipara boundary at Te
Arai has had many positives for
Mangawhai and Kaiwaka. These
entities are now the largest employer
for the area with golfing, hospitality,
accommodation,
and
construction
employees
and
contractors.
The
ramifications are demand from people
new to the area for rental properties and
homes to own.
The above factors have contributed
towards Kaipara weathering better
than some other regions, the current
downward pressure on sale prices. It’s
business as usual with buyer demand
steady, albeit less than the heady Covid
time. Current market conditions are
favourable for buyers with a greater
choice of property listings. For sellers,
the increase in sale prices over the past
10 years ensures that there is still sound
capital growth to be realized in a sale.
Recent sales in Kaiwaka very much
reflect this.
Don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can

Paparoa Pride 2023
1st April from 3pm
We are excited to be announcing that
the Paparoa Pride event for 2023 will
be taking place from 3pm at the
Paparoa Hall on the 1st April.
The event will be a wonderful occasion
to celebrate the diversity of our region.
We will have entertainment both
outside and inside the hall, food trucks,
circus acts, musicians, choirs and we
welcome whānau across the Kaipara.
Everyone is welcome. Nau mai, haere
mai.
Please note that the meeting is at the
Hall (there is no Pride Parade this year)
from 3pm. There will be parking in the
adjacent ground to the hall.
Calling all Volunteers, Entertainers and
anyone creative!
We are looking for motivated people,
with creative ideas to share. We
specifically need volunteers to help out
on the day with decorating the hall,
which will start at 9am. The theme of
the hall inside decoration will be Big
Gay Out, and we will treat the hall like
an inside picnic venue with a schedule
of entertainment starting at 3pm.
If you are interested in joining in as an
entertainer on the day or helping with
set up - or have any other great ideas,
please
