KAIWAKA: ANZAC 2023
Pictured above is the most outstanding and thoughtful
Anzac display by Mark and Pam Ottaway on their SH1
front lawn.
Thank you to the Kaiwaka Can lighting team for the new
Anzac poppy lights on the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall.
Also showing the year the hall was built -1952.
LOST ANZAC KIWI TRADITION
The associations of rosemary with ANZAC day have an
added dimension, in the fact that rosemary grows wild
across the Gallipoli peninsula.
It is uncertain when the practice of wearing rosemary on
ANZAC Day first began, but it has become a regular feature of remembrance early after 1916.
But for a late arrival of poppies for Remembrance Day in early 1922, it would have been the symbol for ANZAC.
Some RSAs in NZ still place Rosemary on the service graves yet now the poppy has become the main symbol. ~ NZ
Remembrance Army
A FAMOUS HORSE REVERED ON ANZAC DAY
Each Anzac Day, there is a special gathering at the grave site in Parewanui, Bulls, to pay tribute to a horse that survived
World War I and returned to New Zealand from the Western Front - one of only four horses to do so at war’s end. Bess
was one of more than 10,000 horses that New Zealand sent overseas to serve in
World War I. A four-year-old thoroughbred at the start of the war in 1914, Bess
became the best known of horses with the New Zealand forces in the Middle East
and on the Western Front.
Bess belonged to Fred Deller, an accountant in Carterton. She was selected by Lt
Colonel Charles Guy Powles, father of former New Zealand diplomat and New
Zealand’s first Ombudsman, Sir Guy Powles, to be his horse for the duration of the
war. Powles and Bess served together in Egypt, the Sinai, Palestine and in France.
After returning from the war Charles Guy Powles became headmaster at Flock
House. Flock House became an agricultural school for sons whose fathers had died
in the war. Bess was brought to Charles Guy Powles at Flock House. She died
suddenly one day in 1934 while Powles was riding her, and he buried her where she
fell on the farm, aged 24. ~ The Memorial to Bess. Photo: HNZPT

WEATHER
MARCH
What an amazing Autumn we are
having so far.
I think we have lived with wet weather
so long that we are thoroughly
enjoying March which brought us
only 48mm over 7 days.
Derek Mason recorded 38mm in
Hakaru over 5 days. The highest
recording Derek has recorded for
March was in 2017 when they got
285mm over 13 days. That same year I
recorded 322mm over 11 days.
The highest recording I have for the
month of March was in 2007 with
362mm. 2013 and 2014 both had
29.5mm over 7 and 3 days
respectively, with 2014 having a
cyclone on the 15th and 16th that year.
The lowest recording I have for the
month of March was in 2005 when
we only got 13.5mm – that was over 5
days, so it basically dried up as soon as
it hit the ground.
Derek’s lowest recording in Hakaru
was 10mm in 2004 over 5 days – once
again not enough to do any good.
Our lawn has finally dried out properly
and I have been able to mow the
WHOLE lawn 3 times now yahoooo.
(In case you haven’t noticed, I like my
lawn to be tidy).
It is so nice to be able to drive over the
Brynderwyns again (even if it is only
for a few short weeks) and check on
the waterfall, which luckily didn’t get
damaged by the huge slips that were so
close to it.
Take care people, hope you didn’t eat
too many Easter eggs.
Cheers, Karen

WOMEN’S SECTION
MOTHER’S DAY
Whether you’re a Mum or Dad
organising something special for your
mother, or you want to give your
children some sneaky suggestions for
their own mum – here are some great
ideas to get you started:
Make a book of all the things you have
learnt from your Mum. They could be
serious lessons, or not so serious ...
Cut out heaps and heaps of heart
shapes from coloured card, and on each
one write something special that you
love about your Mum. Put them all into
a decorated box .
If it’s not possible to take Mum out to
the movies, rent her favourite movie on
DVD and make a batch of popcorn to eat
while you watch the movie together.
There’s nothing more special to a
mother than her family. Put together a
photo album of your whole family, and
have every person add their own special
message. If you are a whiz on the
computer, you could make an online
album to share.
Download all of Mums favourite songs
onto CD, and create a great album cover
telling her she’s the best Mum in the
world. Every time she listens to the CD,
she’ll think of you.
Pick a bunch of flowers from your
garden and attach a homemade card.
It really is the thought that counts,
and Mums know exactly how much a
thought means.

Kia Ora Under 13 parents and players. There has been some
confusion about how this season will run due to low
numbers in other clubs. We are having a meeting with the
sub union this week to finalise our plans. There are 2
potential options that are being discussed, either a small
local competition or joining the Whangarei competition.
Over the next couple of days, I will be ringing parents of all
registered players to discuss your preferred option. We have
a lot of awesome players who have been together for a few
years, and we want to continue to develop these players and
keep our club strong. Please bear with us while we get the

WEEKLY MEETINGS
Our group continues to meet on a
weekly basis which not only offers
fellowship but also the chance to help
OHS Netball and DOE with their
fundraising, These two groups work in
rotation to provide our two course
meals. We have not had many guest
speakers recently but that has given us
all a chance to share some of the
activities we are involved with outside
Rotary. When we listen to each other,
we become aware of what a diverse
bunch we are.
TIMARU CONFERENCE
And Wilding Pines
Recently, President Les spoke of a
Farm Forestry Group conference he
attended in Timaru. He has belonged to
this group for about 30 years but does
not often get to their meetings. The
attendees took part in a number of day
trips. They visited Mt Cook station
where they learnt about the destruction
of wilding pines. The most effective
way to deal with these is to chop and
spray. He also visited Port Blakely
Forest near Geraldine which has
10,000 ha planted in pines.
INCOMING PRESIDENT
Our incoming President (this role only
lasts for a year from July) Babe spoke
of his work as a Maori Ward
representative of the Far North District
Council. Babe has a wealth of
knowledge coming from his previous
involvement
in
a
variety
of
organisations and we look forward to
his leadership. Apart from normal
duties associated with being a
Councillor, Babe Kapa is on
the steering committee for a
new
library
complex
in
Kaikohe. These facilities are now
known as Civic centres and as well as
offering a variety of digital options for
the borrowers both young and old, they
have a café emphasis as well as having
a museum on site.
THANK YOU, JOSIE
We hear that Josie has sold the Sitting
Duck. Thank you, Josie, for your
fantastic service to our organisation.
We have always had a fantastic meal
from you, often at short notice and we
wish you all the best in wherever the
future leads you. We also welcome the
incoming owner.

our Rotarians found on a trip north –

OTAMATEA COMMUNITY SERVICES
VOLUNTEERS: We begin by sending out our grateful thanks to
all those in the community who donate their produce, baking,
knitting, money and time. We have such a great management and
staff, but we can’t forget the wonderful volunteers who gladly help
us go about fulfilling the services we provide.
Our free shopping trips to Whangarei twice a month are driven by
two ex-public transport operators, so we are confident that our passengers are in
good hands. There are usually empty seats, so we’d love to take more - so why
not leave the car at home and take a free trip to town. You can go to
supermarkets and shops etc. in other parts of town as required.
Then there is our monthly community lunch at the St John Hall in Hurndall
Street Maungaturoto.
We have a caterer who is helped by more volunteers who make the day go
smoothly. Our aim is to provide an opportunity to have a social outing and catch
up with friends or make new ones and to enjoy a tasty morning tea and lunch.
Our Food Bank is boosted by the beautiful produce from Grow Paparoa so that
those who are in need get the best of fresh vegetables to go with their emergency
food parcel. Thanks to the volunteers at Grow Paparoa.
Other organisations and individuals who regularly help at the Community House
are not forgotten; we appreciate and thank you sincerely for your time and
efforts. Some of those are our trusted Governance Board Chairman and
members, without whom we would not operate as we do. These very important
people give their time every month and it’s so good to know we can approach
them for their input and guidance.
MAY CALENDAR: Our regular monthly events as follows:
* Wednesday 3rd, Community Lunch, St John Hall 10am to 1pm
* Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 24th Free shopping trip to Whangarei.
Leaves Maungaturoto Retirement village at 9am, returns after lunch.

LOCAL SHEEP DOG TRIALS
The Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial
Club had its annual trial
last week
on Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd of
April. Held at the grounds in Oneriri
Road, the location is not only an
excellent course for competitors to run
their heading and huntaway dogs, but it
also has amazing views across the
Kaipara.
Sadly, the weather didn’t quite play the
game, with rain throughout the two
days, meaning gumboots and wet
weather gear really was essential,
especially when it got muddy!
The trial was a great success,
particularly with the number of heading
runs up from previous years, being the
last trial of the club season for the
Northland centre, there is often several
competitors working on the last chance
to qualify for an island or New Zealand
event. It was great to see many men,
women and their dogs travelling from
the Waikato region to compete, as well
as some great younger up and coming
competitors
stepping
up
and
performing with their dogs.
A couple of local competitors took out
wins at the trial, with Graham
Robertson (Whakapirau) top in the
short head with May and Scott McRae
(Te Arai) top in the straight hunt with
Chad. Well done to David Millar of the
Otamatea club, winning both maiden
heading events. Graham, Scott, and
David (along with many others) all had
to juggle their competitive runs
between working on the courses as
volunteers over the two days.
Patron Bob Sceats donated a prize for
the best young, up and coming
competitors in the heading and
huntaway events. Congratulations to his
grandson Fletcher Sceats with Crae,
winning that prize in the heads, while
Waikato based trialist Olivia Horsley and Duke were successful in the hunts,
well done.
Like any event, it cannot be a success without our wonderful volunteers, with
over thirty people helping through set up, running everything during the trials
and pack down, the club cannot thank you enough. Special thanks to Trevor and
the team at Oneriri Station for the use of their sheep for the trial, and to the
Paton family, and manager Michael for the use of the farm, where the trial
ground has been for the last 57 years.
It was fantastic to have a bunch of local sponsorship

generous support and coming along where you could

TUTU COLLECTION
It's great to see this new collection
being made use of by our members.
We've seen all sorts of items come
through - telescopes, a knitting
machine, card games, board games,
programmable robots... These items
are free for library members to borrow.
They don't live at our library, and
they're very popular, so you need to
place a hold to go into the queue, and it
will be delivered here for you to
borrow when your turn comes up. Go
to Enterprise* and type TUTU (doesn't
matter if you use capital letters or not)
into the "Search our catalogue" box
near the top of the window and then
click/touch the green SEARCH button
to get started. There are, of course,
books that also have that word in their
title, and if you want you can narrow
down the search by clicking on the
"Tutu Collection" link in the Shelf
Location list once you've done that first
search to just get the collection.

BOOK REVIEW
Recently, I've
read EO-N by
Dave Mason.
"
2019: Alison
Wiley, a once-
idealistic
biotech CEO, is
processing her
new
reality:
she’s the last
bud on the last
branch of her
family tree. On
the heels of her
mother’s illness
and crushing death, she's pulled into a
seventy-four-year-old mystery by a
chance discovery on a Norwegian glacier.
1945: RCAF Squadron Leader Jack Barton
flies combat missions over occupied
Europe. Major Günther Graf, a war-
weary and disillusioned Luftwaffe pilot,
is trapped in the unspeakable horrors of
Nazi Germany. Their paths, so different
yet so similar, are connected by a young
victim of appalling cruelty."
This was a
captivating read - I've not been reading
much lately but absorbed this book in
just two days. This book is on our
Rental Fiction shelves.
See you in the library ~Wendy

GARDENING
FOR THE
YOUNG & OLD
Here we are at the end of autumn;
hopefully winter will be mild for
gardeners and farmers and a frost or
two will kill a few bugs in the soil.
As May arrives the growth cycle of
most plants will be almost finished and
now, we must make arrangements for
winter. Some people treat May as a
slack period as they think the plants
have stopped working – they haven’t.
Roses do not stop working – they
produce sap to fill the hips and feed the
next generation of seeds. During
autumn the rose will be storing sugars
and starch in their lower branches and
roots ready for the first sign of spring.
July – don’t prune your roses too low!
Winter is an opportunity to turn over
soil in flowers beds when vacant and
apply lime dressings to sweeten the
soil PH; prepare planting sites for new
trees and shrubs; remember to add the
autumn leaves to the compost when
cleaning up.
Do you need new fruit trees? See our
local nursery people for advice.
Growing
winter
vegetables
–
broccoli,
spinach,
cauliflower,
cabbage, kale, lettuces (which are very
hardy plants), mesculin (great in
salads) and of course Asian vegetables
such as bok choy and Chinese
cabbage. Don’t forget silver beet.
Did you know figs were a prized
aphrodisiac for the early Greeks?
Fresh or dried they provide one of the
best natural sources of calcium and
iron as well as vitamins A and C. Try a
glass of tawny port with fresh figs –
sheer bliss!
Great gardening ~ Mr Jo.
To make a garden all you need is just a
single simple seed. A patch of earth, a
sheltered spot That's not too cold, but
not too hot, A little rain, a lot of sun,
That's all you need; And when you're
done, In some strange way your seed will
know Just how to sprout and how to
grow Until you see to your surprise A
miracle before your eyes, A baby leaf still
curled up tight That's pushing upward
toward the light What will it be? A tree?
A weed? Each one is started from a seed.
