LISH!
Lish is a true treasure
Whenever you see Lish she greets you
with her wonderful smile; she is ready to
listen and give help where and when
needed.
Little over a week ago Lish completed the
stair climb in the Firefighter Sky Tower
Challenge with Crew members Craig
Steiner and Mikey Renton - teamwork,
stamina and courage!
Four Square Charlie Awards: our very
own Lish was selected as a finalist for the
Local Hero Award and flew to Blenheim
- Ant said Lish is a Kaiwaka local through
and through, and it is wonderful that she is
part of our team. It is a real credit to Lish
on how she achieves things in
--store as she serves and
volunteers to give back to the
community.
Kaiwaka Sports Association -
Lish
has
accepted her
nomination as President of
KSA. She is ready to bring
younger folk on board -
understanding fitness and
fellowship. She has already
worked many hours behind
the bar, especially with Jean.

The FABELMANS
Friday 23 June, 7.30pm
The Fabelmans is a 2022 American
coming-of-age drama film directed by
Steven Spielberg, who co-wrote and
produced it with Tony Kushner.
The film is a semi-autobiographical story
loosely based on Spielberg's adolescence
and first years as a filmmaker. The plot is
told through an original story of the
fictional Sammy Fabelman (Gabriel
LaBelle), a young aspiring filmmaker.
Part memoir, part ode to the power of the
movies, The Fabelmans finds Steven
Spielberg digging at the family roots that
helped make him a beloved filmmaker --
and proves he hasn't lost his magic touch.

KAIWAKA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
OPPORTUNITY
The Kaiwaka Historical Society has had contact from
the Mangawhai History Group (Mangawhai and
Districts Museum) offering to include Kaiwaka and to
support the upkeep of the Kaiwaka history records.
“Kaiwaka has always been included in our zoning
for historical searches. Other areas are Tomarata,
Oruawharo, Te Arai, Hakaru, Tara and Mangawai/
Mangawhai. These seven areas make up our
Mangawhai and Districts title, often used.
In 2015 we created booklets in 3 Series of 10 booklets
per series. These little story books were to let the
public learn something of our early European history
of the area, with each having a different topic, plus
photographs of the subjects.
They have also proven valuable in the fund-raising
domain. This is an example of some of the things we
do as a group.
We would very much like you to join our group and
invite you to do so. We share so much history
regarding families and community affairs. Having
your wonderful knowledge and expertise would add
such a lot to our general pool of interest.”

HOW DOES YOUR
GARDEN GROW?
TAMARILLOS
are starting to ripen.
I've lost a few to the terrible weather. But this
fruit is a winter delight. The red fruit are beautiful to look at.
Some are not into the taste. I love it. Yum with icecream or
for breakfast with muesli.
Makes a great sauce. Just
use your plum sauce recipe.
Rich and spicy. Tamarillo
are relatively easy to grow.
Need shelter from wind and
frost. And are prone to
fungal disease. Les gives
ours an occasional sulphur
spray. They are short lived
so we have about 5 of
different ages. Planting one
each year. They can live for
10 years but I find 5 is good
age to rely on. Taking into
account
the
occasional
cyclone, cold snap and
whatever else Mother Nature
will throw at us.

WEATHER
APRIL
So much for a lovely mild dry Autumn,
that pretty quickly turned to custard.
March was beautiful then along came
April and with it, came wind and rain.
The temperatures however have been
lovely. I am still wearing shorts and T
shirt and its early May.
Derek says the Hakaru rainfall for
April, was as follows; 101.5mm of rain
over 18 days for the month of April,
whereas I (in Kaiwaka) recorded
127mm over 15 days.
The wettest April recorded by Derek
was in 2001 (I wasn’t keeping records
back then – I started in 2003) with
247mm over 13 days. The wettest April
I have recorded was in 2017 when we
got 224.5mm over 12 days.
The driest April recorded by Derek was
in 1984 with 24mm over 10 days. The
driest April I have recorded was in
2005 with only 32mm over 11 days.
Bring back the old days I say!!!
The highest annual rainfall I have
recorded since 2003 was last year
(2022) with 2130mm.
The
Brynderwyn
waterfall
is
performing well, I’m so glad the slips
didn’t destroy it (Brynderwyn waterfall
on 9 May). Thank you to everyone
who has been working tirelessly to get
the SH1 open again.
I pity the poor cattle and sheep – and
their carers, trying to stay above the
soggy cold ground.
Until next month
folks, try to keep your feet dry.
Cheers Karen
ZONTA CLUB OF MANGAWHAI OFFERS
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Are you a young woman between 16 and 18 years of age, living in Kaipara,
who would welcome the challenge to upskill your leadership abilities on the
Spirit of Adventure’s Leadership Development cruise in 2024? Or do you
know someone like that?
Once a year, the Zonta Club of Mangawhai gives one local young woman the
opportunity to experience the thrill and challenge of this programme. Now is the
time to complete an application form for the 2023 award which will be confirmed
mid-July.
A past winner has this to say: “I enjoyed every
aspect of the voyage, from sitting out on the
bowsprit while the ship sailed from Tawharanui
out to Great Barrier, to sailing with dolphins
nearby every day, to night swims, to late-night
star gazing, to jumping off the ship’s rope swing
and doing flips off the side of the boat. I made
great friendships with some of my shipmates
during this voyage and I will always remember
the experience as such a positive and fun life
experience that I was fortunate enough to take
part in. The memories will stay with me always.”
This could be you!
Contact Liz on 021714543 to
get an application form.

From the Principal, Dirk Smyth - I am pleased to see a lot of progress on
getting our six new classrooms ready. These classrooms will be known as
G-block when the work is finished later this term. Four will be senior English
classrooms, and two will be year 7/8 syndicate classrooms. The Ministry of
Education will be delivering an additional six classrooms to us later this year.
These are necessary because of our projected roll of approximately 750 students
in 2024.
Winter sports have begun. We would like to acknowledge all of the whānau,
student and staff volunteers that help to provide these opportunities for our
students. Our staff who are regularly out coaching, umpiring and managing
Otamatea High School students in their own time include Samid Buksh, Chris
Byars, Alex Linnell, Nikola Kemp, Stephanie Hutchinson, Samara Foster, Helen
Anderson, Kay Robinson, Marco Troost, Amy Dempsey, Tina Holst, Bruce
Alison, Jess Baker, and Taira Phillips.
OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL
Kia ora Church Whanau,
Wow 2023 is moving ahead as we are
already in the month of May.
God is moving powerfully, and we are
seeing an incredible move of his spirit
touching lives and touching families in
our community.
Sunday services are now overflowing,
and mid-week meetings have also had
good things happening.
MAN UP AND LEGACY
We are running Man Up and Legacy
with a lot of men and women attending.
This is such a great and powerful
program that is literally changing lives,
with the overflow of this moving
through families as they make a
commitment to bring their families to
church for the first time.
This has been a great space for people
to connect that have never been into a
church before.
We have increased our prayer to seek
the heart of God and feel God is
releasing his grace for us to step into
his plans for our area.
This year we are looking at a number of
things
which
will
impact
our
community.
If you want to continue to stay updated,
then connect on our Kaiwaka Church

with church mid-week meetings and

Let's continue to seek God and watch
his plans and purposes manifest in this
next season. ~ God bless, Pastor

KAIWAKA CAN!
With
all
the
weather events in
the few past months
it has been hard to
get any movement on our outdoor
projects. However we are now moving
forward with park work.
McClean Park 2022
is now
underway with the first stage engaging
Geotech and landscape design being
organised as we go to print. This will
establish what we are able to achieve in
the area such as skate park and public
area.
McClean Park 1947
has had
landscape plans drawn up and we are
now waiting for some settled weather to
get drainage and landscaping done.
Some of the poplar trees have been
removed alongside the main road which
has opened things up more. It is great to
see more and more people utilising this
area.
KAIWAKA
COMMUNITY
RESPONSE GROUP
On the weather front, Kaiwaka Can was
approached to see if we could organise
a public meeting to create a Kaiwaka
Emergency Response Group to handle
disasters like the weather events we
have experienced over the past few
months. This took place and we now
have a Kaiwaka Community Response
group. We have drafted up guidelines to
put in place should such events happen
and will be holding one more meeting
early June to formalise things. Once
this is done it will be published and
distributed to all households. It has
been a little different to put together
due to the fact that we cover large areas
- we have divided it into four smaller
groups. These being Oruawharo,
Oneriri, Hakaru and Kaiwaka.
David Wright is the coordinator for
the group, and should an emergency
occur the St John Hall will become the
Control Centre. If anything happens
before our next meeting, you can
reach David on 021889370 or check
your local pages on Facebook for
information on where to go, what to
do etc.
After the next meeting we will publish
all the relevant numbers needed and
distribute to the households in the area.
KAIWAKA LIGHT WALK
We will be running a small festival
(Lights and Lanterns) in conjunction
with the Kaiwaka Primary school but
would also like the whole community to
get involved. This will be on the
evening of Friday 30th June. This is
also to celebrate Matariki but have
moved the festival forward to fit the last
day of term for the school. More
information to come as things get
finalised.
SENIOR SCHOOL STUDENTS
Kaiwaka Can is looking for senior
school students who would like to get
involved with the community by
working on some of our projects. This
would be great experience as they
would learn to work with different
organisations and also help dealing with
the financial side to these projects. This
would look great on their future CV and
also help with future job applications. If
you are interested call David

Kia ora, our names are Ankit Syal and
Parmpreet Chahal and we are brothers
from India.
We both arrived in New Zealand in
2014. We both received a diploma in
business management after completing
our studies at Northtec University in
Auckland.
We each resided in a different area of
the North Island while we were
studying. I lived in Tauranga and
worked as a supervisor in a glass firm,
whereas Pampreet lived in Wellsford
and managed the neighbourhood Bottle
-O shop.
Together we have been able to live and
launch a business in the lovely
community of Kaiwaka where we now
call home, which was one of our goals
growing up.
The Kaiwaka community has been kind
to us as we embark on our most recent
venture here, and we are eager to share
the future with you all. We are just a
couple of guys trying to do our part for
you and for the neighbourhood. We
appreciate your assistance, so feel free
to drop by for a chat or to say hello
when you are in the neighbourhood.
Thank you, Ankit and Parmpreet.

‘We all love our little skating group.
The kids look forward to it every week,
it’s become a lovely way to come
together and build on community
relationships.’
Another Mother and I tapped into the
resurgent popularity of skating to
provide a fun, affordable, inclusive
community activity for all ages.
We are a non-profit organisation and
just ask for a gold coin donation to
cover the hall hire.
Any extra proceeds will go towards
discos and future events for the group.
Session times are 2.30-3.30pm
Fridays at the Kaiwaka Sports
Complex.
This works in very conveniently with
school pick up times for Kaiwaka
Primary students, but all interested are
warmly welcome to join.
All children are to be supervised and
acknowledge
participants enter at
their own risk.

KAIWAKA SQUASH
Kaiwaka Squash Club runs most of the
year round at the Kaiwaka Sports
Association but is a great winter sport
for when the weather is not so great.
We have a
club night on Monday
nights from 6-8pm
and anyone is
welcome to come and have a look and/
or a game if they are interested. We are
searching for more members to join the
club.
We have played a variation of squash
on one of our two courts called
squash57, which plays with a slightly
bigger racket and ball on the same
court.
So come down and check us out.

ON FARM AUCTION
Wednesday and Thursday, 24 and 25 May, were two
momentous days for Bryan and Isobel McClean
when they put up over 600 of their beautiful Jersey
cows for auction.
The original Pukenui herd was started in 1926 by
Bryan McClean’s family and since its inception has
always been admired by visitors and those driving
along State Highway 1. They are recognised among
the best Jersey cows in New Zealand.

PUKENUI JERSEY STUD - Dispersal Sale
Photo left shows the large crack around the sewage
point at the end of Oneriri Road as at last Wednesday.
It has been inspected.
Photo below shows a disappearing fence! There was
such a large amount of gravel washed down Parekura
Road the cattle are able to walk over the fence and
onto the road. Many on gravel roads will have a
similar experience, especially where the water tables
have not been properly formed.

GARDENING
for the YOUNG
& OLD
“
By
Hokey,
Hokey
”,
Selwyn Toogood used to say when he
came onstage to compere the quiz show
‘It’s In the Bag’!
Well, it’s only a day or two away from
June! Time to organise the planting of
bulbs both vegetables and flowers.
Vegetables – GARLIC: the outer
cloves of the bulb are best; however all
should grow. Garlic cloves only need to
be 3cm-4cm under the soil, pointed end
uppermost – they are hardy types.
Flower bulbs such as daffodils, tulips,
freesias when flowering in spring pit a
lovely colour in the garden.
Marigolds, wonderful plants, can be
as borders in amongst the winter
vegetables; marigolds sterilise the soil!
Hydrangeas, in mild areas such as
Northland, can be pruned leaving one
or more pairs of fat green buds on each
stem, cut out any weak or gnarled
growth. Hydrangeas are hardy souls – I
use hedge clippers or secateurs.
June is the first month of winter so
container
plants
e.g.
cyclamen,
polyanthus, primulas, pansies and viola
should be kept in a sunny sheltered
spot.
Container plants as with other plants
in winter slow their growth or their
growth stops altogether – don’t over
water at this time. Plants which are not
in active winter growth only need
enough water to prevent the soil
becoming dust dry.
Side-dress winter brassica crops with
a general fertiliser now.
Protect developing cauliflower heads
by folding the inner leaves over the
‘flower’; herb plants will need a heavy
pruning – cuttings from rosemary, sage,
thyme, tarragon and oregano can be
planted in the garden or containers.
Pip and citrus trees – before winter
really arrives spray with a copper or all
seasons spraying oil.
Greenhouse or shade house – discard
last season’s tomato plants; mulch
animal manure and compost; consider
growing orchids and chrysanthemums
or out of season fruit and vegetables.
Warm temperatures can easily be
maintained even during the colder
winter months.
Finally a handy hint from Bill Ward’s
‘Edible Garden’ – for really sweet,
crisp lettuce add a teaspoon of Epsom
Salts to each plant two to three weeks
after planting and again two to three
weeks later.
Until next month, good gardening and
stay dry! ~ Mr Jo

KAIWAKA LIBRARY
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
Many thanks to the library volunteers
who helped make this a great success.
We now have a new selection of books
on our Dargaville shelves for you to
borrow. We will have these until about
November, when we will swap them for
other titles. We were a bit short on
Large Print, so I will organise for more
to be selected. The Dargaville books on
the junior shelves will be swapped in
the near future, it was all too much to
do everything in the one journey.
NEW LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS

BOOK REVIEW
Margarita has read
Submerged
by
local author Luke
Williamson
and
recommends it.
She
says "I’m not a
swimmer
of
the
ocean but do love the
ocean and its magic
qualities
and
the
e x t r a o r d i n a r y
creatures that reside
in it. I was not
compelled to pick up
this book to read at
first (judging a book
by its cover).
"What hooked me was the way it was
written. I was transported to Mangawhai
Beach watching the sun rise. The authors
structure of words offered me the
experience of diving into the freshness of
the early morning water. It gave me a sense
it was like a sacrament, the earth offering
the grace of a new day to Moses.
"The story exhibits vulnerability throughout
the book, from swimming on your own in
the dark ocean, life changing its course in
your mid 50’s, getting older, and the
initiation of forming new friendships with
other beings. When we choose to push
through fear
with curiosity
and wonder,
the results can
lead to amazing
trail of
experiences
and
friendships.
Reading about
how Moses and
Ronnie interact
and form a
friendship is a
refreshing and
delightful
read."
See you in the

WHAT IS A
KNOCKER-UP?
A 'Knocker-up' was hired to ensure that
people would wake up on time for their
jobs. Mary Smith earned sixpence a
week shooting dried peas at sleeping
workers' windows in East London in
the 1930s. This profession continued in
pockets of industrial England until the
1970s (Peek, Sitala (27 Mar 2016)
Molly Moore (daughter of Mary Smith,
also a knocker-up and the protagonist
of a children's picture book by
Andrea U'Ren called Mary Smith)
claims to have been the last knocker-up
to have been employed as such. Both
Smith and Moore used a long rubber
tube to shoot dried peas at their client's
windows.
The knocker-up could also use a baton
or short, heavy stick to knock on the
clients' doors or a long and light stick,
often made of bamboo, to reach
windows on higher floors. One famous
photograph shot in 1931 by John
Topham shows a knocker-up in East
London using a pea-shooter. In return
for the task, the knocker-up would be
paid a few pence a week. Some knocker
-ups would not leave a client's window
until they were sure that the client had
been awoken, while others simply
tapped several times and then moved
on. From Wikipedia.
