KAIWAKA SCHOOL WELCOMES WHANAU
CLASSROOM BLESSING
Last Friday 16 June at 8.30am the opening of the school’s
upgraded classrooms began with a blessing led by Pastor
Paul Tautari. The classrooms have taken a year to be
completed so there was excitement in having the New
Entrants and Year 1 children using this beautiful space.
Ps Paul Tautari, photo right, with third generation pupils to
attend Kaiwaka School.
INVITATION
There are two events happening at Kaiwaka School on
Friday the 30th of June.
One, there will be a shared lunch for whanau at school. The
classrooms will be open and whanau can walk through and
see the learning the children have done around Matariki.
Each class has been given a star to learn about. The children
will also perform the school Kapahaka for parents and community. This will also be a
time to share the new Matariki and atua panels, photo left, that received funding to
beautify the school's environment.
At 5.30pm the school family will join the community and Kaiwaka Can in the school
car park to begin the Kaiwaka Lantern Walk at 6.00pm. The children have been making
lanterns in class with the help of Jude Bishop. There has not been a lantern walk for
many years and folk are really looking forward to it. The lantern walk will finish at
Eutopia Café where the students that are there will perform their Kapahaka for the
whanau and community. “We hope to see everyone there,” Sharlene, Principal.

ABOUT TOWN
You are welcome to join the Kaiwaka Matariki Lantern Parade - bring a
candlelight or torch light - meet at the Kaiwaka Sports ground at 5.30 - 6pm -
follow the leader to the Eutopia Café where the Kaiwaka school pupils will
perform their end of term kapahaka. The last Lantern/Lights Parade was in 2009
celebrating 150 years of Kaiwaka town - ‘The Little Town of Lights’!
We remember Paul Donaldson who passed recently. Paul grew up on the
Oneriri and with Bev farmed on Donaldson’s Hill - on the left over the Kaitara
Bridge.
Visitors with babies will appreciate the new baby changing table at the public
toilets in Kaiwaka -the busiest in Kaipara, possibly on SH1 north of Auckland.
Question: How long will it take to have a motorway from Warkworth to
Whangarei? See page 15 - the Kaiwaka Railway Station opened 110 years ago.
Which letter is silent in the word "Scent," the S or the C?
Kaiwaka Sports Assn meeting Wednesday 5/7 at
7pm - all welcome
The Kaiwaka Bugle crew is a great little volunteer
team - check us out on print day, the last Monday of
the month in the KWMH.

WEATHER
MAY
There doesn’t seem to be
any let up from this wet
weather. I’m struggling
to find anything positive to say except
that it is good weather for staying
inside and clearing out drawers of
clothes that haven’t been worn for a
few years. Time for a new wardrobe
maybe.
The month of May seemed to be in
keeping with the weather pattern this
year, of rain for 4 or 5 days then one
fine day, although we had one spell of
10 days rain then 1 fine day but very
quickly back to 5 wet days then 1 fine
to be repeated through the month.
For the month of May we had
324.5mm of rain over 23 days.
This is the highest recording of rain
since I started keeping records in 2003.
The least rain I have recorded for May
was in 2007 with only 35mm.
As of end of May, our Year-to-
Date measurement is 1804.5mm.
Derek Mason recorded 299mm for
May over 28 days.
While he had more wet days than we
did he had less moisture for the month.
Derek’s
YTD
measurement
is
1490mm. A difference of 314mm and
yet he only lives a few kilometres from
us. Stay warm people. Cheers, Karen
It was the warmest
May on record in
Aotearoa New Zealand.
The nationwide average temperature in
May 2023 was 13.1°C, 2.0°C above
the 1991-2020 May average from
NIWA’s seven station temperature
series which began in 1909.
Of the five warmest Mays on record,
all have occurred since 2011.

A LOCAL CAT STORY

last year with their treasured
pussycat arriving in NZ in
April – a rather special cat!
But just recently one of

and helped get the cat safely out and it
travelled back home sitting on a
surprised but happy driver’s lap. ~

OTAMATEA HIGH
SCHOOL
‘Congratulations to all of our students who get actively
involved in the wider life of the school. To those who
participated in the cross country this week, to our brilliant
basketballers, football, hockey and netball players, our
squash and table tennis players, our amazing DOE students,
and to those who are currently completing defensive driving
and fire extinguisher courses - ka pai! Students who take
part in extracurricular activities develop valuable skills,
grow their social connections, learn about time
management, have the chance to discover new interests,
develop a sense of identity, and gain self-confidence. These
students usually do better academically as well. If your
child is not participating in any extracurricular activities,
please encourage them to get involved.‘

MATARIKI
Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars that rises in midwinter, also
known as the Pleiades. This marks the new year in the Māori lunar calendar. A
time for celebration and reflection with family and friends, to feast and share the
harvest. The first year Matariki being celebrated in Aotearoa with a public
holiday was on June 24 2022. This year on 2023 Matariki is on July 14.
There are nine visible stars in the Matariki cluster, each one holding a certain
significance over our wellbeing and environment. The nine stars are named:
Matariki, Tupuārangi, Waipuna-ā-Rangi, Waitī, Tupuānuku, Ururangi, Waitā,
Pōhutukawa and Hiwa-i-te-Rangi.
Mānawatia a Matariki
Māori believe that appearance of Matariki in the morning sky in mid-winter
marks the Māori New Year, or Te Mātahi o te Tau. It signals a time to
remember those who have passed, celebrate the present and plan for the future.
It’s a time to spend with whānau and friends – to enjoy kai (food), waiata
(song), tākaro (games) and haka.
Our tūpuna (ancestors) would look to Matariki for help with their harvesting.
When Matariki disappeared in April/May, it was time to preserve crops for the
winter season. When it re-appeared in June/July, tūpuna would read the stars to
predict the upcoming season. Clear and bright stars promised a warm and
abundant winter while hazy stars warned of a bleak winter.

GET RID OF YOUR MICE...
An old timer’s secret of getting rid of mice in your house.
You will need:
600 ml of WHITE vinegar - not brown because it stains
everything.
15 drops of Lemon Essence.
15 drops of Peppermint Essence.
1 pack of cotton balls.
Method:
Mix the white vinegar, lemon essence & peppermint
essence in a spray bottle, grab as many cotton balls as you
need & give them a good spray of the solution. (Needs
respraying every 3rd day)
Place the sprayed cotton balls in the corners of your room,
behind cupboards or anywhere that the mice run.
After about a fortnight, there shouldn't be a mouse in the
house! [

From Our New President:
THE SMELLY LEAK FIXED!

literally! So we called upon our very trusty Bruce
Ferguson and our favourite plumber Drew
Whitehead from Fineline Plumbing, Ray from the
great team, MacJimray Septic Tank Services And Dave
from WaterFlow.
The guys started the day not knowing what was ahead of
them and worked so hard during the whole day clearing all
our pipes and making them function again.
I, thank you as the new president of the KSA, and also from
the wonderful team that stands beside me to run and keep
this wonderful venue operating for our community.
We apologise to anyone who was affected in the last week
or so from this issue.
It is now resolved thanks to the above professionals.’
Newly appointed President,

CHANGEOVERS
By the time this edition appears, we
will have new personnel in not only
our own Club, but also in District
9910. Our present District Governor,
Matt McLeod, will give a summary of
his year. This is always very interesting
as Rotarians and their Clubs have a
variety of ways in which they fundraise
and interact with their communities
(from the North Shore, through to the
Pacific Island nations of Noumea,
Vanuatu and Norfolk Island). We will
also get a chance to hear what our
Governor elect, Neil Murray, has
planned for the ensuing year.
As far as our own club is concerned,
we will have Babe Kapa coming on
Board. This position is only held for
one year and we look forward to
hearing what Babe has planned for the
year.
He has already suggested that he wants
some discussion on how we, as
members, perceive the way forward.
Watch for coming updates in this area.
NIKAU GROVE
The work in Nikau Grove has
continued. Thanks to a number of
different Rotarians, who have provided
both material and labour, the area
around the kauri tree is now much
more secure and user friendly. As you
can see from the photo, the lead up has
been
made
much
more
effective by the addition of
hosepipe attached to the
guiderails.
With the addition of some
artificial turf, the actual
surface of the bridge is no
longer slippery. A “weed-
busters”
group
is
now
planning to work through the
area and further hosepipe will
not only define the edge of the
track, but also (hopefully)
restrict access off the track, so
that the new growth can
appear unhindered. Please
encourage newcomers to the
community to take advantage
of this very pretty piece of
native bush right on our
doorstep.
TREWIN’S FARM WALK
The walk on Trewin’s farm (thank you
Bryce and Aneta for allowing us to
access this) went very well, although it
was mainly Rotarians and family who
attended. It is amazing the fantastic
views of the Kaipara one gets when
time is taken to go off the beaten track.
DRIVER MENTOR
If you have an hour or two to spend
each week, and are of a patient
disposition, it would be great to have
you on board as a Driver Mentor.
Overall, lesson length varies from 1
hour for beginners to 3 hours for those
close to their test (this is because we
have to travel to Whangarei and
Dargaville to give students relevant
experience). The normal programme
covers around 12 lessons. Mentors and
students are matched for availability re
day and time.
We are receiving more and more
requests from people wanting to sit
their restricted – many of them
students. We do have our own car for
this purpose and work under the
umbrella of People Potential, who pay
our running costs. Please get in touch
with me if you are interested on

On June 4th to 6th a Silver Duke of Edinburgh group travelled to the Volcanic
Plateau to complete their silver qualifying tramp on some tracks of the
Tongariro Northern Circuit and a day off track route finding. The group
experienced all types of weather over the three days...rain, sleet, snow, strong
wind and sun. They put all their skills learned from their training weekend and
practice tramp into various leadership roles as they tramped over lava flows,
down scree slopes, over mountain saddles, culminating in going behind the
Taranaki Falls. All agreed that this was their best tramping adventure yet!

‘LESS THAN 100 MILES OF RAILWAY IN
THIRTY YEARS’
The recent opening of the Puhoi to Warkworth motorway reminds us that the
north is still disadvantaged with slow development of both road and rail
connections.
Referring to New Zealand Herald 6 July 1937, page 15 “SHORTENING
ROAD Elimination of Gorge AUCKLAND TO WHANGAREI WORK ON
WAIPU DEVIATION: This is one of the chief activities under the No. 1
District Highways Council during the year," said Mr J H Packwood, chairman,
at the annual meeting of the council today, when referring to the deviation
between Kaiwaka and Waipu, on the main Auckland-Whangarei highway. The
deviation will eliminate the need of passing through the Maungaturoto Gorge

GARDENING
FOR THE
YOUNG & OLD
Here we are at the end of June; the
shortest day has arrived and passed.
The first of winter’s three months has
come and gone.
School holidays - Miniature Gardens
If the weather is not ‘playing ball’,
here is an idea - if you look around the
shady corners, path edges and lawns in
your garden you will probably find
some patches of moss - soft. green and
very easy to work with. Moss is a great
material for making miniature gardens
- it looks like tiny hummocks of grass.
For trees – collect some nicely shaped
little branches from shrubs and trees
around the garden.
Use decorative pebbles to form a
pathway and fill in the gaps.
Then get 1. A shallow container e.g. a
wooden box, baking dish or plant pot
2. Potting mix, peat and river sand –
fill with potting mix etc
3. The moss (as noted above) –
collected by lifting with knife/spatula
4. Place moss on top – fit as a jigsaw
so it covers most of the soil.
5. Add your miniature ‘trees’ and
‘shrubs’ and pebble paths.
6. Water gently - keep container in a
semi-shady spot, then water weekly (in
summer water daily).
The mini garden will last a long time.
As an after- thought, why not enter
your wee garden in the School Show
Day.
This Month’s Tasks
Now is the time to plant your new
roses. Trim back any damaged roots
then
plant
with
the
‘graft
union’ (where the shoots come from),
just above the soil level.
Now is the time to prune your
established roses – cut out any dead
wood; thin out the main shoots to
prevent
overcrowding;
cut
the
remaining healthy canes by one third
to half their length. If the plants are old
get a wire brush and vigorously brush
the crown (graft union), this will
stimulate new growth!
As soon as possible after pruning,
before new growth starts, you can give
roses and other deciduous shrubs a
thorough spray with a copper fungicide
combined with a spraying oil to help
control pests and diseases.
One final thought – if you grow
rhubarb now is the time to divide big
clumps and replant, ensuring each
section
has
green
shots.
They
love
plenty
of
manure
and
moisture.
Great
gardening

KAURI MUSEUM
FOREST WALKWAY
We are very excited to have opened a
spectacular new attraction at the
Museum – the Forest Walkway.
The first and largest part of a multi-
phase
redevelopment,
the
new
walkway features a forest of tall
“trees” – cleverly designed light boxes
– which visitors pass through after
entering the Museum. Alive with a
natural soundscape of bird song and
sounds from the native bush, the
Walkway takes visitors back in time to
the Jurassic era when kauri emerged in
Gondwanaland. It introduces the Māori
dimension of the story and, in
particular, the story of Tane Mahuta
and the creation of the world of light.
Entering through the walkway, the
height, sound and light give a “wow”
factor, to the Museum, creating a sense
of awe and the scale and ancientness of
kauri.
Allow two to three hours to explore
this engrossing museum complex. The
Museum grounds also include the
original Pioneer Church, School and
Post Office.

WHAT WAS THAT BOOK I
READ?!
Do you find that when you get to the
library you've forgotten that author you
wanted to read more of? Or which
book in a series you're up to? We have
tools for that!
Your library borrowing history can be
accessed on your smartphone - log in to
your account at Enterprise* in a
browser (such as Chrome) and go to
My Account, then the Checkouts tab;
scroll down past your current books
and you'll see a "Checkout History"
option.
If you have the Kaipara Libraries app
installed on your phone, you can view
your history in a similar way to
Enterprise: My Account > Loans >
Loan History.
You can track your reading on the
Beanstack app - and enter competitions
to win prizes at the same time. Log in
with your library card and PIN to
register the district's reading challenges
- there are two under way at the
moment, the 1,000 Books Reading
Challenge, and the Takurua Reading
Challenge. Then when you sit down to
read, pick up your phone first and start
the timer in the reading log.
GOOD READS
Separate to all the library tools, I also
use the GoodReads app/site to track
what I've read. I note there when I
started a book (I do it when I first start
reading it), and when I finish. I usually
use the GoodReads web site on my
computer
(https://
www.goodreads.com/), but also have
the app on my phone so I can access
the information anywhere. You can
note books you want to read in the
future, so you can look them up later
and find the details. You can also
connect with friends who also use the
site and see what they're reading.
BOOK REVIEW
I recently read
Paper Cage by
Tom
Baragwanath.
It's his debut
novel, and what a
read!
The
Beanstack app is
telling
me
I
devoured it in
just over 5 hours
- it was so
gripping that I
would have read
all in one day, if
I hadn't had to be
in other places for a bit and had to put
it down, then couldn't stay awake long
enough to finish it that day. You'll find
it on the Rental Fiction shelves in the
library - use Enterprise* or the library
app to place a hold so you're next in the
queue to read it. "Masterton isn’t a big
town. The community’s tight, if not
always harmonious. So when a child
goes missing it’s a big deal for
everyone. And when a second kid
disappears, the whole town’s holding
their own children that little bit
tighter...because the clock is running
down for the children of the town.
Both a nail-biting thriller and a
beautifully written, acutely observed
portrait of a community, Paper Cage is
the prize-winning debut from young
New
Zealand
novelist
Tom
Baragwanath."
See you in the library ~Wendy

MARKET PERCEPTIONS VERSUS
REALITY
Kaye McElwain from Ray White has lived in the area for 18 years
and has worked in real estate for over two decades as an agent and
business owner.
Today she looks at ‘Market Perceptions Versus Reality’.
It is easy to buy into the current narrative that the houses aren’t
selling and if they do, it’s at bargain prices where the sellers have lost money!
This simply is not true, and One Roof (part of the NZME Herald stable)
published data under the banner “How much is my suburb worth?” that clearly
dispels this myth. Given for each suburb were two stats that measure the impact
of the downturn: the property value peak and the value pre-Covid (March 2020).
These two figures along with others show the strength of value in the respective
suburb. Let’s look at Kaiwaka’s stats:
What this clearly shows is that sales being made right now in 2023 are at a
higher level than just pre-Covid, albeit not at the artificially created Covid
housing sales frenzy.
Over the last month we have seen buyer activity increase. Current market
conditions are favourable for buyers with a greater choice of property listings.
For sellers, the increase in sale prices since pre-Covid ensures that there is still
sound capital growth to be realised in a sale. Recent sales in our area very much
reflect this.
We’d love to chat further with you, so do call us to talk through what is really
happening out in the marketplace, rather than falsely believing the property
market is at an all-time low.
Feel free to give me a call at any time if you have any questions at all regarding
real estate. ~ Best wishes Kaye, 027 215 2016.
