KAIWAKA LIGHTS UP!
See the KAIWAKA BUGLE in colour online at www.kaiwaka.co.nz at any time.
On Friday night our ‘Little
Town of Lights was awash of
lights.’
Finally after a couple of false
starts through Covid and Rain,
Kaiwaka Can was able to get
the first of what we would like
to call Annual Kaiwaka Lights
and Lantern Festival off the
ground.
Approximately 200 people
joined the Walk from the
Kaiwaka Sports Association
with the beat of Drums (no
pied piper) down around the village and under the bridge at
the southern end where they found not a TROLL but two
dancers and finishing off at Eutopia Cafe.
They were greeted by the Blue Light Fairy Princess dressed
in lights to welcome them in. The crowd was then
entertained by the Kaiwaka School Kapa Haka group. A big
thanks to Whaea Mina and the group. After the polished
performance there was Hot Chocolate with Marshmallows
and soup served for all to enjoy, this was provided free of
charge by Kaiwaka Can.
To end the night the
children were given
marshmallows on a
skewer to cook on the
braziers
under
the
supervision of their
parents. This seemed to
be the highlight of the
night.
A big thank you to Jude
Bishop
for
putting
everything in place to
make it happen. This included workshops at the school to
teach and help the children make their lanterns. Others to
thank are Sharlene and the Teachers and pupils of Kaiwaka
School for their hard work and participation on the night,
Adrian from the Fire Brigade for traffic control on the
Pedestrian Crossing and Marikje from Eutopia Cafe for
making their place available for the event. And a big
THANK YOU to Rob (Eutopia) for lighting up the place. It
looked fantastic.
A lot of people there were talking that they can't wait to do
it again next year. We can't wait to start organising the next
one. We have learnt from this one and hope to make the next
one bigger and better next year. If there are any people who
would like to get involved or have any ideas you can contact
us. The last Lantern/Lights Parade was in 2009 celebrating
150 years of Kaiwaka town.
Come along to our Kaiwaka Can meetings on the third
Wednesday each month at the Archie Bull Hall at 5.30pm.
Membership is
only $10 per
annum to get
voting rights.

BOUQUET to FRANCIS
Many thanks to Francis Meagher who recently and at
short notice, restored power to St Paul’s church and
the Archie Bull hall. There had been a bracket failure
holding a power cable, leading to a Pole Fuse
Removal by North Power.
Francis came to remedy this fault willingly and at no
charge, on a very bleak Saturday, making a special
trip from Mangawhai. ~ St. Pauls.

WEATHER
JUNE
The weather in June was decidedly
below average!
I seem to have more spare time at the
moment as there is no way I can mow
the lawn or weed the garden. I think
most people have the same problem
unless you live at Mangawhai Heads
and your soil is mostly sand.
Our rainfall for June was 215.5mm
over 20 days.
We had 9 days straight of fine weather
and got very excited to think it might be
a continuing theme but to no avail –
back came the rain.
Our year to date (YTD) balance is at
2020mm.
So far, this year is shaping up to be a
record year for rainfall at our place. The
wettest June I have recorded was in
2018 with 311.5mm and the driest June
was in 2019 with 85.5mm.
Report from Derek in Hakaru – His
June rainfall was 260mm over 21
days.
Derek also recorded that on the 7th and
17th of June, the maximum day time
temperature was 14 degrees.
On Friday the 30th of June as I
travelled back from Silverdale, there
was a thunderstorm and the outside
temperature reading on my car was 10
degrees. Not much fun driving in a
thunderstorm, I was glad I was not far
from home when it hit.
Chins up people, NIWA is reporting a
dry summer, so fingers crossed.
Cheers, Karen
We’re
only
halfway
through
the year, but new
NIWA analysis shows that some parts
of New Zealand have already recorded
more than a year’s worth of rain.
It was the wettest first half of the year
on record for several areas in the
northern and eastern North Island.
NIWA meteorologist Ben Noll says that
to many, the results probably won't be a
surprise.
"Those living in Northland, Auckland,
the Coromandel Peninsula, Gisborne,
and Hawke’s Bay have dealt with a
constant barrage of sub-tropical lows,
atmospheric rivers, and ex-tropical
cyclones,
which caused
copious
amounts of rainfall. It has been quite
relentless," said Noll.
Kaikohe (2140 mm)
Whangārei (1526 mm)
Warkworth (1525 mm)
Kaikohe in Northland received over
130% of its normal annual rainfall from
January-June. On the driest end of the
spectrum,
Waimate
in
South
Canterbury received just 33% of its
normal annual rainfall from January-
June .
El Niño is emerging in the tropical
Pacific and is expected to bring notably
different weather patterns to the country
during the back half of the year as
compared to the first half.
At a recent meeting the speaker
was our very own Patron
Neville Andrew who spoke of
his Life in the Royal New
Zealand Airforce. This was in
Upholstery
especially
packing
parachutes - a very responsible job. His
highlight in the Airforce was a trip to
Antarctica. He also went to Vancouver
where they had to do 48hr shifts which
was only meant to be for 10 days but
ended up 3 weeks. Neville was in the
Airforce 28yrs all up!!Well done thank
you Neville.

MUSEUM REDEVELOPMENT
2021-2023
The Forest Walkway
.
About 60 guests attended a dawn
ceremony on Saturday July 22 to mark
the official opening of the project,
after which the Museum was open to
the public for free throughout the
weekend.
The new walkway features a forest
path through tall lightbox “trees” –
which lead visitors through a newly-
built space alive with a natural
soundscape. The work was part of a
multi-phase project supported by a $3
million grant from the Provincial
Development Unit.
Museum Board Chair Grant McCallum
(pictured)
said
the
funds
for
redevelopment included creating a
Research Centre where people can access the Museum collections and Archives,
undertake genealogical research, and better understand the significance of Kauri.
Director Barbara Hilden said the Museum was delighted that this stage of work
was finally completed and could be unveiled for the public to enjoy.
It is with regret that the Kauri Museum announces the departure at the end of July
of its Director, Barbara Hilden. Barbara joined the Museum from Canada in
February 2022 to help structure a return from Covid and deliver the Museum’s
$3M PGF-funded development. Family illness in Canada is now necessitating her
return.
While the Kauri Museum is recruiting its
next Director, former Kaipara District
Mayor Dr Jason Smith will fill in as
Acting Director to help maintain
continuity and momentum from the
recent
redevelopment.
A
lifelong
Matakohe resident and ardent Northland
supporter,
Jason
brings
extensive
experience in the kauri tourism sector
alongside a wealth of cultural policy,
economic development and relationship
development experience that will not
only help keep the Museum running
seamlessly, but also grow its profile

COUNTRY CLUB
INSIGNIA
FOR
THIS
ROTARY
YEAR
Create Hope in
the World is part
of insignia for
the
current
Rotary
year
(July to June).
Our
International
President,
Gordon McInally, spoke about
this, and why he had chosen the
topic. I am mindful of the fact that
we are all capable of creating hope
in our small corners and it is
something I aim to do. Northland
also got a mention at the
International Rotary Conference held in
Melbourne with Cat Levine’s Te
Taitokerau Mental Wellbeing project
being promoted. This is a three-year
project and at the moment this is being
conducted in the far and mid North, but
we will be having our turn next year
when the Kaiwaka school is involved.
All reports I have had of this have been
very positive.
PRESIDENT CHANGEOVER
Babe and Les pictured above. We
farewelled Les as President early in
July (Presidents only hold the position
for one year usually) and Les outlined
what had been accomplished in the past
year, which included our support of
William Pike and Duke of Edinburgh as
well as the President’s Scholarship
$1500), Senior Citizen’s afternoon tea,
providing a candidate for the Rotary
Youth Leadership Award (RYLA),
involvement of Year 12 students at the
High School in the Rotary Youth
Driving Academy (RYDA) as well as
the continued popularity of our Driver
Mentoring scheme. We now have a new
President in Babe Kapa and he has
already outlined his ideas for the club in
the ensuing year, but he is seeking input
from all members so that whatever we
do has us all on the same page. Looks
like we are in for a fantastic year.
HOST FAMILY
I am not sure if this position will be
filled at the time of publication, but we
are looking for a host family for a 17-
year-old Swiss student from November
2023 to February 2024. While the
student gets an allowance, there is no
reimbursement for the host family. For
two weeks of this time, the student will
be away with other students who have
come from overseas. Lars will be
attending Otamatea High School. If you
think you might be interested, please
call me on 021 142 0357 for more
details.
DRIVER MENTORS
I am pleased to let you know that we
have had two applications for people to
be Driver Mentors. This means that our
car should be well used over the
coming months as the waiting list
continues to grow.
GROVE ON HURNDALL
Nikau Grove continues to take some of
our time. We had planned to weed in
the area, but we have decided to wait
for better weather. However, we have
put up some alkathene to better define
the track and as well as putting astroturf
on the walkway over the kauri roots we
have also placed it on the bridge at the
bottom end of the bush area. This was
starting to get a little slippery so now it
will be safer to walk on. The next
working bee we will be having will be
laying more limestone on strategic parts
of the track. It is amazing that what we
laid some time ago has packed down
nicely.
We plan to be part of the Community
showcase run by Progressive Paparoa
on 30th July. This will give us a chance
to show what not only we as a club do,
but what the wider organisation of
Rotary is involved in.
Please get in touch with me if you are
interested on 0211420357 ~ Eileen

BARRACOUTA
This very sharp toothed fish was caught last week in net on the Otamatea River
.
Ref. Native Animals of New Zealand by AWB Powell - ‘the barracouta
(Thyrsites atun) is a long narrow fish attaining a length of almost 4 ft and a
weight of 8 lb. It is
found
throughout
New Zealand and
Australia and usually
occurring in surface
shoals.
It
is
predacious on other
fish and is notable for
the unrelenting fury
with which it attacks
other fish, sometimes
larger than itself. The
teeth are long and
pointed like needles
(ask Tony!).

From the Principal, Dirk Smyth - On the 7th of July, Otamatea High
School hosted its much-anticipated annual senior school ball. Guided by an
exceptional group of students, the senior ball committee chose the enchanting
theme of an "Enchanted Forest”. Our year 11, 12, and 13 students made a grand
entrance in their exquisite gowns and stylish suits. The evening unfolded with a
delightful blend of dancing, photo sessions, and delicious food, accompanied by
the fabulous tunes of one of our school's outstanding bands, The Rubber Bands.

GARDENING for the YOUNG & OLD
Another month has come and gone.
Tomorrow is the first of August,
supposedly the final month of winter.
At this time of the year ‘God’s little
creatures’ - the bees are short of their
food. There are several flowering plants
and shrubs that can give them some
food. These include the blue flowers of
the
Borage,
Camellia
flowers,
Nasturtiums, Lavender and Marigold.
Without the bees pollenating our
grapes, kiwifruit and all
varieties of fruit trees we
humans would be in
trouble.
CITRUS TREES: It is
time to give your citrus a
close inspection of the
trunks and branches. If you
find holes or worse still
mounds of sawdust on
branches your tree has
been infested by the borer
grub. It is ideal to prune
out the infected wood.
Keep an eye out for new
sawdust trails - burn the
prunings!
More on CITRUS: It is time to harvest
ripe lemons, oranges and mandarins.
Citrus in storage often develop a
destructive blue mould - DUNK the
picked fruit in a solution of sodium
Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) - one
teaspoon to a litre of water; allow the
fruit to dry before storing.
SPRING VEGETABLES:
Sow spring onions, parsley,
peas, silver beet, lettuce
cabbage, tomatoes (from mid-August),
broad beans and carrots.
Also plant out your summer strawberry
plants and give them a ‘dressing’ of
sheep pellets and chook manure.
WINTER IN CONFINED SPACES -
people in schools, supermarkets, etc get
colds and flu. Herbs and
Native Plants can be of
benefit - the liquid was
drunk of kanuka leaves
boiled in water by early
Māori for head colds.
The same for Kowhai
leaves for sore throats
and colds. Kawakawa
has been used for may
complaints ranging from
relieving
chest
congestion and covering
weeping sores.
NASTURTIUM TEA
of flowers, leaves or
seeds (or all) for respiratory congestion
and chest colds - the leaves contain iron
and Vitamin C
PARSLEY TEA made by boiling the
leaves and stalks is good for coughs,
asthma and poor digestion.
Until next month - Spring, good
gardening and good health. ~ Mr Jo
Wright

Like many gravel roads in Kaipara the extra rain has caused many problems. The
lack of good water tables is one of them. A lot of the gravel/metal has finished up
on road fences and in paddocks. The road team is doing a great job of cleaning
and/or replacing the culverts.

FEES FREE!
From 1st July 2023 there are no fees*
for borrowing items from our library, or
any library in the Kaipara District.
What used to be the Rental shelves in
the library are now the "new" shelves,
showing what is new to us. The books
that were on the Rental shelves before
the start of the month will still be
labelled as rentals until it comes time
for them to be moved to the 'other'
shelves, but you will not be charged a
fee to borrow them. (*Two exceptions -
Interloans from outside of the district,
and lost items will still attract a cost.)
ROOF REPAIRS
Many thanks to Kaipara District
Council for the grant we have received
to repair the leaking roof.
TABLE FOR KIDS' AREA
The library is looking for a small table

BOOK REVIEW
I've recently read The Manuscript by
Lucy Bloom. What a treat! Fast-paced,
witty, and I devoured it in the space of
an afternoon and evening - I didn't want
to put it down. "When author Edith
Scott finds herself free in many ways,
she switches genres to write a book
about war and men. As she learns hard
lessons from the
men in her life,
who chew her up
and spit her out,
Edith
writes
them into the
plot, killing them
off with delight.
But what she
doesn't know is
that real life is
dealing
with
them in a parallel
reality too brutal
for words." This
book is on our
"new" shelves and free to borrow.
~
See you in the library, Wendy

MOLESWORTH SHEEP DOG TRIAL CLUB
While it’s the off season for sheep dog trials,
there has been some things for our local club
to celebrate following the Northland Sheep
Dog Trial Association AGM in June.
Deb Hastie, life member of the Molesworth
Club was nominated by the Northland Centre
and awarded a New Zealand Sheep Dog
Trial Association Merit Award for her
services
over
the
past
47
years.
Congratulations Deb on behalf of the club
and community.
Her award reads.
Mrs Deborah (Deb) Hastie involvement with
Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial Club spans 47
years, since 1976, supporting her late husband
Robert, in his role as secretary, an integral part
of the club with administration, financial and
secretary duties.
In 2002 she was awarded a life membership and
formally elected treasurer in 2014, after supporting Rob as secretary/treasurer.
Rob was championship secretary for the New Zealand in 2003 and the North Island in
2012, Deb was a key supporter during these, months of preparation to ensure success.
She credits Rex Ries for training on running championships. In 1987 she was in Rex’s
team (including Joy West and Lynette Finlayson), doing the typing (5 carbon copies),
draws and results.
In 2004 a move to Baldrock Road, meant hosting Molesworth and sometimes Otamatea
judges during club trials, Deb leaving breakfast setup, to be on the grounds for first
entries. The Hastie’s provided a venue and
sheep for the Northland Handy Dog for 11
years. Deb was part of the Molesworth team
running the short head course at 2019’s
New Zealand Championships. For the last
two years she’s supported the Otamatea
club with their centre champs and club
trial
.
People such as Deb are the heart and soul
of dog trialling in New Zealand, their
contribution to the sport can never be
acknowledged enough!
In May, long standing Northland Centre
patron, Merv Cameron passed away,
meaning the centre required a new
patron. It was agreed at the AGM that the
centre would appoint not one by two
patrons. Two very capable, long standing
and committed men, who have over
many years given huge amounts of time
and effort to dog trialling in the north,
and throughout New Zealand. The two
Northland patrons are Allen Nisbet of the
Tangowahine Sheep Dog Trial Club
(formerly Mangakahia SDTC) and our
very
own
Tony
Hargreaves.
Congratulations Tony.
