ONOKE: Recently a black and
white striped worm was found in
a rotten Totora, just above
Onoke Pt. - see arrow on 1930
Otamatea Survey map.
Noke is the Māori name for
earthworms, and some sources
say onoke means "the place of the worms".
KAIWAKA FOLK
We were saddened to hear of the
passing of two of our older
Kaiwaka residents:
Elizabeth Preston: Elizabeth was
the very long time ‘keeper’ of
McClean Park and while living in
Kaiwaka was checking and
clearing the rubbish nearly every
day for more than ten years. Photo
right with her trusty weed eater was
taken when she was eighty- long
before she retired. She also knew
the ‘ratbags’ and got very upset
when they stole the flowers she
planted – “to give the place a bit of
colour!” .She was 87.
Alwyn Judd: Alwyn visited
Kaiwaka Primary School in 2021
and spoke of his time at the school.
Alwyn’s first paid job was at
school - emptying the ‘dunny cans’
with Owen Bowmar down under
the wattle trees - they were paid 6d
a week. Alwyn’s family, the Judds
and Stewarts go back to Kaiwaka’s
first settlers. Alwyn was 93.
Have you been to our local sheep and cattle sales? The Wellsford Saleyards are a great
place to take the family for an education and, of course, buy and sell your stock. The cattle
sales are every Monday and the sheep are sold every Tuesday - beginning at 11am at 41
Centennial Park Road, Wellsford. For many years our Kaiwaka Plunket members
volunteered in the
sale yards cafeteria
as a fundraiser. Sadly
this closed at covid.

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
AUGUST
What a difference a couple of weeks of
relatively dry weather can make.
The land is starting to dry out, but the
grass isn’t growing as fast as the poor
farmers would like it to. The animals
seem less stressed because they aren’t
up to their knees in mud. Nature is
sorting out partners for the coming
season and we have had 3 or 4 lots of
ducklings already.
The predictions I have heard so far
from NIWA are that we should get a
fairly dry summer this year.
At our place we had 66mm of rain for
the month of August 2023 over 16
days. My hubby was right, one half of
August wetter than the other.
The month was shaping up to be quite
dry until we got 22mm on the 20th,
mind you this was 100mm less than
August 2022 thank goodness.
The highest recording I have had for
August was in 2010 with 227mm and
the least was recorded in 2011 with
just 34.5mm.
Derek from in the Hakaru Valley had
83mm for the month of August over 16
days.
The
maximum
daytime
temperature that Derek recorded in
August was on the 21st which was 13
degrees. ~ Cheers, Karen
Many thanks to Trish our vice
president for taking the August
meeting.
Some of our members were able
to join Waipu Womens Section in a
dinner incorporating a "Fancy Hat"
competition, Jan Mann was thrilled
when she won the raffle.
Next meeting: Thursday 28th
September at 1.15pm in the Hakaru
RSA clubrooms on Settlement Road.
You are all welcome to come and try
your hand at Housie. ~ Cheers, Ann

FLYING OFFICER BRIAN DE
LABROSSE LINNELL 412340
RNZAF RAF
Brian de Labrosse Linnell was born on 10 June 1906, in
New Zealand. His father, George Frederick Linnell, 35 and
his mother, Augusta
Caroline
De
LaBrosse, 32, were
long time residents of
Kaiwaka.
Brian farmed sheep
and beef on the
Oneriri Peninsula.
Peter, his son, writes
‘I am keen to tell of
my father’s wartime
experiences as in his
lifetime he seemed
reticent
to
share
them.
His younger brother
only in his twenties
died in his sleep after a game of rugby in 1939. In 1918
whilst in camp training for WWI his Uncle Dick had died of
disease, so death can’t have been far from foreign in his
mind.
Brian wanted to join the air force but was too old, but by
‘losing’ his birth certificate he conveniently lowered his age
by seven years to 27! And
with a reference from a former
prime minister and current
MP he made his initial
application on 10th November
1939.
There was a problem in that
Dad had only had about 18
months
of
secondary
schooling and thus his maths
was not up to par. To remedy
this lack required he got
correspondence lessons which
he did.’ To be continued.

On
the

Tuesday
in
September,
we
held our regular
meeting where we
noted the progress
for the past month
and
the
way
forward for the
ensuing one.
BUNNINGS SAUSAGE SIZZLE
We had a very successful sausage
sizzle at Bunnings, where we also
sold donuts. We were able to use
our community connections and
sell the extra donuts later in the day
at the monthly market held in
Maungaturoto. We are planning to
have two more stalls at Bunnings
on the 7th and 21st October, so
please come and speak with us if
you want to know more about what we
do.
WALKWAY UPGRADE
We are still planning to help the
Maungaturoto Country Club with the
upgrade
of
their
walkway
in
conjunction with the Maungaturoto
Residents’ Assn. This cannot progress
until lambing has concluded. As an
affiliated member of the Country Club,
we will be looking for other
opportunities where we can help.
FIJI CHILDRENS’ HOSPITAL
Recently we had a talk from
Robin
and Ortrud James
who were
speaking about the Childrens’ Hospital
in Fiji that they have been involved
with. At the moment there is
accommodation for 27 youngsters who
have congenital heart defects. Their
operations are performed by teams of
volunteer surgeons who come from
various parts of the world, staying for 7
or 8 days. There is no cost for the
treatment and the rooms have been set
up so that a caregiver can stay with the
child. It was interesting to hear how the
Pacific Islands are supported in this
way.
DUFFY BOOKS VALUE ADDED
For a number of years we have
sponsored Duffy books in Tinopai (and
this year we co-sponsored the
programme at Kaiwaka.) We are asked
to send a representative of the club to
the school when these books are
presented to the students.
The following is what happened this
year. Talk about “value added” - Merv,
Bron and foster grandchild represented
Maungaturoto Rotary club at the Duffy
Books in Schools presentation at
Tinopai in the middle of September.
Diana Queenin, the Presenter, had an
incredible knowledge of, and had
samples of a wide range of fossils
(Horseshoe Crab pictured below) that
kept all present spellbound. Who would
have thought that a lady who had,
among other things, spent 4 years as a
Guide at the American Museum of
Natural History, could be found
presenting to 13 children at Tinopai
Primary. As a result of this programme,
each child gets two books of their own
choice to take home.

MORE CLASSROOMS: The site preparation for our next set of six
temporary classrooms, plus a new toilet block, has begun. These will be
located next to the G-block classrooms on the field behind A-block. This is a
Ministry of Education led project and the goal is to have these new classrooms
ready for the start of 2024. These will be much needed as our projected roll for
next year is expected to exceed 700 students.
HOSPITALITY:
Last week our year 13 Hospitality students and their tutors, Kari and Nikola,
travelled to the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) to complete a series of
baking assessments, and a delectable adventure filled with cakes, pastries,
desserts, and a whole lot of unforgettable moments. (Photo below)
MARKET DAY 2023:
This year we had 16 stalls run by students in the
Commerce Department with a smorgasbord of tasty treats
including cupcakes, hotdogs, burgers, candyfloss and
more. Several stalls sold out and reached their profit
targets

PIONEERS OF NEW ZEALAND MUSIC
Herbs announce the reissue of their ground-breaking
back catalogue on 180gm coloured vinyl.
Recently Drummer and vocalist Gordon Joll* and Tama Lundon
were on the AM Show with hosts Ryan Bridge and Laura Tupou.
Tama said their reggae has always been a bit political, but it was
important newer ears listened to the band's sentiments - they need to pay attention
to the lyrics, keeping the country clean and green.
Gordon noted that the songs are enduring; three generations have enjoyed these
now. He added that Reggae has always been a protest genre of music. Bob
Marley wrote songs of hope and happiness.
The band was inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame in 2012.

GARDENING for the YOUNG & OLD
Spring is here and after a cold
August the soil is warming up.
It is time to plant another batch of
brassica plants along with salad greens
and your favourite tomato varieties.
Be aware that the slugs and snails will
be lying in wait! I use ‘Blitzem’ or the
safe for pets’ slug bait. If you don’t like
chemicals try these effective organic
methods:
1.Snap off the lower
leaves of your older
brassica plants and
place around you
new seedlings - the
slugs and snails will
happily munch on
the
broken
off
leaves;
in
the
morning deal to the
snoozing pests as
they will be under
the broken leaves.
2.Beer traps are
very effective. Place shallow jar lids
flush with soil level, fill with cheap
beer. Snails and slugs flock to the beer
and drown while drinking! Empty the
lids every day or two.
3.Broken eggshells scattered on the
vege patch are a deterrent to slugs and
snails - they don’t like crawling over
the sharp edges.
4.Natural predators - birds and
hedgehogs love to eat the brassica
pests.
There is something very relaxing and
satisfying
about
strolling
around the garden and picking
edible flowers, berries and
vegetables.
With
the
vegetables I am talking about the ones
that taste good raw!
A strawberry patch is a must - they are
easy to grow; they love a straw mulch
and an acid soil type - throw some pine
needles or finely chopped
pine bark around them.
Edible flowers include
pansies, pumpkin flowers,
nasturtiums, and don’t
forget dandelion leaves,
puha (sour thistle) and
watercress - all great in
salads (watercress and
puha add much to a ‘boil-
up’).
Finally HERBS. The
herbs you grow for soups
and stews will depend on
your own taste, but some
essential ones to include would be basil,
chives, coriander, parsley, dill oregano,
rosemary, thyme and sage. Grow them
in pots close to the door or in among
the vegetables in the garden. Grow mint
in a big pot or else it could run amok in
your garden!
All the afore mentioned herbs have
medicinal uses and have been used to
help cure aliments for thousands of
years. Research will surprise you on
what you may find. Until next month -
good weeding and gardening.~ Mr Jo

FAREWELL AND THANKS
Margarita has left the library team to
take up another position with another
community organisation in the district.
She's been with us for just over two
years, and it has been a pleasure
working with her and making friends in
that time. Thank you for all your efforts
in the library, Margarita, they're much
appreciated.
VACANCIES IN THE TEAM
There are a few days waiting to be
filled in the library team. If you would
like to join our friendly group of
volunteers, please send an email to
kaiwaka.library@gmail.com to let me
know. You need to be familiar with
basic Windows functions, and full
training will be given.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently, I've read Did I Ever Tell You
This? by Sam Neill. It's a delightful
journey through his life and long acting
career. If you've ever heard him in an
interview, he writes just the way he
speaks - friendly and affable. The book
is on our 'new' non-fiction shelves at the
moment and is also available as an
eBook or eAudiobook - search
Enterprise* to see your options. We
have some of his movies on our
shelves, too.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
