Sophie and her small team of workers did a brilliant job with the setting up of the downstairs at the pavilion. The KSA
Chip shop had a great run on hotdogs and chips (thank you!) as there was large crowd of children and adults out enjoying
themselves in the dark and scary rooms!

FAREWELL AND WELCOME
A farewell evening was held for Jess and
Ant Pedersen and their children Ruby,
Harry and Archie at the Kaiwaka Sports
Assn. Folk showed their appreciation for
the contribution the Pedersen family had
made in the community and through
Kaiwaka Four Square.
In Ant’s words, “ After almost 3 years,
have been so much fun! We were lucky to
have the most amazing team to work
alongside and the most loyal and staunch
community, it has been an absolute
pleasure to have served you as we have. We’ve crammed a bit into those three
years; We were under no illusions of our responsibility to carry on the Jaques legacy and we hope we’ve done them
proud. Thanks to the community who have supported our store. We’re off to New World Onekawa in Napier - if you’re
ever in the area be sure to call in and say hello!” Pedersen family pictured top left.
Welcome Molly and Ben Steiner and their children Archi and Ossie, the new Kaiwaka Four Square Owner Operators,
who took over on Monday 16 October. The Steiners are from Taranaki. They were five and half years in their first store
at Four Square Kaponga, where they feel there was a similar vibe to Kaiwaka. They are looking forward to meeting the
local folk - so do go in and say hello. Pictured top right is Molly Steiner and her father, who was in store giving a hand
the day we called.

MOVIE HOLIDAY TILL 2024!
Movies will continue next year. Our last screening was 27 October 2023 and the
committee agreed to make it a special FREE ONE as a thanks for all the support,
and also to show people that it is a great set up/experience. So your support next
year will be again appreciated, and all funds go to the Kaiwaka Hall maintenance.
Dedicated Movie team is 2 at the moment - Beverly Chitty and Me (Ad Clarijs) and
we like more people putting their hand up for this please. ~ Ad Clarijs
KAIWAKA WAR MEMORIAL HALL AGM......from the
President’s Report
As always thanks to all the officers and committee members.
President: Ad Clarijs; Secretary: Amanda Maxwell, Treasurer & Booking officer:
Wendy Howard; Members: Tony & Lindsey Hargreaves, Heather Ferguson, Bev
Chitty, Millie O’Leary, Pam Ottaway, Jennie Reynolds. We are all volunteers.
These meetings are necessary to keep and look after this great Community asset.
Fundraising is always needed to maintain this hall - Building Warrant of Fitness
and monthly checks, fire alarm safety, insurance, rates, security monitoring,
telephone and power -it all adds up! Hiring out the “old” medical/ doctors’ rooms,
general hall hire and running the movies are the main fundraisers.
Thank you to Kaiwaka Can for putting up the “poppy” lights on the front façade -
remembering that the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall was built in 1952.
We had a rough year with weather events which resulted in getting an expensive
roof repair done (still battling with our insurer). We also decided to replace all our
“old” heaters in hall and supper room with new ones after we had an alarming email
that one of them was catching fire!
Due to all these costs going through the roof, it was
decided that was time to increase the Hall Hire from 1
January 2024 last increase from memory was 13 years
ago!!
HALL HIRE (hall and supper room, access to all the
chairs and tables) $15.00 hour.
HALL HIRE & KITCHEN (includes a fully stocked
kitchen, plates, bowls, cutlery, fridge, 2 microwaves, 2
cooking /range/oven) $30.00 hour.
The Kaiwaka Library AGM was included in this
meeting - regular reports and updates are included in
the Bugle and on Facebook at Kaiwaka Library.

WEATHER
SEPTEMBER
Well
those
pesky
showery, rainy days
continued
through
September, but I think we got far more
sunshine hours than in other months.
Recordings at our place for September
were as follows:
Between the 3rd and 13th we got
145.5mm then we had 7 wonderfully
fine days with a bit of wind.
We were just getting used to the fine
weather, when along came another 5
days of wet and very windy days. The
total of rain in those 18 days was
204mm.
The least rainfall I recorded for the
month of September was in 2008 with
43.5mm.
The most rainfall recorded for
September was in 2015 with 207mm.
Derek Mason recorded 191.5mm for
the month of September in the Hakaru
Valley.
El Nino weather pattern is on its way
for New Zealand for summer 2023.
Most of our lawn has dried out enough
for us to get the ride-on on to it but
some of it is still too soft for the ride-
on or the push mower. I dare say it
won’t be long before some people start
grizzling about the dry weather.
Enjoy the sunshine people,
cheers Karen

COAST GUARD NORTH KAIPARA
Labour Day
Call Outs
A big thank to our North Kaipara Coast
Guard Wet Crew members who did 2 successful rescues on labour Day
The first was to collect a boat from the Bar. The boat was extremely lucky not to
have sunk when a wave threw them up, causing their engine to stop when it
went into the water. Luckily for them another boat managed to find them until
the CG crew took over the tow and got them safely back to the Hoteo River
Ramp at very low tide - pictured below.
As they were finishing that job they then got sent to rescue a father and his
daughter and their broken down JetSki from another part of the harbour. The
JetSki was towed to Tinopai Wharf and the driver delivered to his car and trailer
at Batley. The crew finally got back to base 6.5 hours after leaving Tinopai on
‘Tinopai Rescue’.
Coastguard New Zealand received over 5,000 radio calls over Labour Weekend
- logging in a Trip Report with our communications teams.
Boaties on the Kaipara Harbour are able to communicate freely and easily
with Coastguard North Kaipara via VHF Channels 07 and 61. You can also
contact Coastguard on your cell phone by dialling *500.

GARDENING for YOUNG & OLD
Went for a stroll the other day to see the Kaiwaka
Community Garden, opposite Small Pukeko’s Daycare –
very disappointing. Three years ago ‘Kaiwaka Can Do’,
Kaiwaka School pupils and an old chap had it looking
pristine – 3 raised beds with a wide variety of veges and
herbs plus two blueberry bushes.
Things to do this month:
Make sure plants are getting enough water as the westerly
winds are drying the soil after the showers.
It is time to plant tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant, corn
cucumbers and potatoes. Mound up the soil as potatoes
grow and spray with copper fungicide to prevent blight –
use the same spray for tomatoes.
Use a blend of fish and seaweed liquid fertiliser every 2 to 3
weeks to feed your vegetable plants.
Three basic plant nutrients – potassium (fruit development
and overall health), phosphorous (root development and
flowering) and nitrogen (essential for leafy growth).
MULCHING! Mulch to retain moisture, protect soil from
extremes of heat and cold, stifle weed growth and improve
soil texture. Mulch with straw, old leaves, compost, manure,
untreated sawdust or wood chips, pine bark and mushroom
compost at 10- 12 cm deep.
As it is close to Christmas here is a Christmas Cake recipe
from my Great Aunt Martha’s cookbook!
KING GEORGE I’s CHRISTMAS PUDDING
-As eaten by Him at 6 o’clock on December 25th, 1714.
-His first Christmas in England.
-Still used at Sandringham.
11/2 lb. finely shredded suet.
l lb. sugar.
1 lb. eggs (weighed in shells). 1 lb. brown breadcrumbs
1 lb dried plums (stoned &halved) 1 heaped teaspoon mixed spice.
1 lb. mixed peel cut in long strips. 1/2 nutmeg grated.
1 lb. small raisins.
2 teaspoons salt.
1 lb. sultanas.
1/2-pint new milk.
1 lb. currants.
Juice of lemon.
1 lb. sifted flour.
A very large wineglassful of brandy.
Mix the dry ingredients, moisten with eggs beaten to a froth, and
the milk, lemon juice and brandy mixed. Stand for at least 12
hours in a cool place, then turn into buttered moulds. Boil for 8
hours at first, then for 2 hours before serving. Makes 3 puddings
of 3 lb. each.

KAIWAKA SPORTS ASSOCIATION
TOP of the ROCK!
Exciting news!
Kaiwaka Sports Association’s
annual multi-sport event,
the Top of the Rock, is back
it will be held on
Sunday 17th March 2024
St Patrick’s Day.
There are two running/walking
routes: a 5km and a 10km. The 5km
route goes around the two lakes near
Baldrock Rd. The 10km route goes
around those two lakes then traverses
private land not usually open to the
public, reaching a lofty spot on the
hills at the base of the Brynderwyns
with fantastic views to the ocean to the
east and through to the Kaipara
Harbour to the west.
There will be a Kids Fun Bike Ride
for children under 11 years, which is
free to enter. It’s a short, flat course
(going around the sports complex
grounds, school grounds and a
neighbour’s farm), and takes around 10
minutes, so it’s perfect for the young
ones. Children will need a bike, helmet
and shoes.
Prizegiving and entertainment will
be held at the Sports Complex
afterwards, with prizes for place-
getters and lots of great spot prizes.
Entries are not open yet – keep an
eye on our website or Facebook page
for more information. If businesses or
individuals
are
keen
to
offer
sponsorship, we would of course love
to hear from you. Anyone keen to help
out on the day is also welcome to
contact us. Full briefing provided.

scenes at this great community facility
that is available for you to enjoy.

PRESIDENT’S SCHOLARSHIP
First of all, I would like to draw your
attention
to
our
President’s
Scholarship, worth $1,500. This is
open to any young person (not
necessarily at school) who is following,
or considering, taking some form of
tertiary education. Call 021 142 0357 if
you want an application form.
Applications close on the 7th
November.
BUNNINGS IN MANGAWHAI
Since our last report, we have
successfully
run
two
fundraisers outside Bunnings
in Mangawhai. We have
appreciated the support of the
staff there. On the 4th
November, we will be having
Ottaway’s donuts for sale as
well as the sausages. Any
surplus donuts will be taken
to the market at the Good
News church on the same day. This
will be the last fundraiser of this type
for the year.
KUMARAS
We were pleased to be able to give the
Ruawai Lions Club $3,000 from the
District Disaster fund. Five of their
members attended our normal meeting
and one of their number explained the
impact of weather events on kumara
growers in the Ruawai, Te Kopuru
area. I had understood that it was
Gabrielle that had caused the problem,
but issues started back in October 2022
when adverse weather conditions
meant that planting that was normally
completed prior to Christmas was not
completed until mid-January. Warwick
Simpson was their spokesperson and
he mentioned that instead of harvesting
in excess of 1,000 bins, he
harvested 120 bins. Half of the
harvest is kept for seed.
However, Warwick did say that he, and
others, are optimistic about the coming
season. The money we gave was used
to provide food vouchers for those
impacted most severely.
For some time now we have been
looking at ways of working more
closely with Lions in our area and the
seed was sown on this evening to look
at ways we can use combined efforts to
work more closely with youth in
our respective areas.
QUIZ NIGHT
We are planning on entering a
team in the upcoming quiz
fundraiser (25th November) at
the
Maungaturoto
Country
Club. This fundraiser is to assist
our Rotary Exchange student,
Jaime, who will be travelling to
Belgium next year. These nights are
always a great deal of fun, even for
those of us challenged by some of the
questions.
Please be mindful that we are going to
have our Senior Citizens’ afternoon
tea on 17th November at the
Maungaturoto
Centennial
Hall.
There is no cost to attend this, but we
do need an indication of numbers
ahead of time. Those of you who have
previously attended, will be aware of
the excellent performance that is put on
by Maura Flower’s singers. While we
are entertained, it also gives these
students a good chance to perform in
front of an audience. Please give your
name to any Rotarian if you would like
to be part of this afternoon.. ~ Eileen,

NATIONAL GARDENING WEEK
CONGRATULATION to our PRIZE
WINNERS
Our three winners were spot on with their
answers and also their hints. Thankyou to
all those who entered the Yates National Gardening
Week competition.
Christine Evans (right) who included her gardening
hint - ‘Make sure to harden off seedlings for 1-2 weeks
before transplanting them into the garden’.
Carolyn Dymock (below left) - ‘I check out the moon
calendar as that really seems to work and if the seeds
are
in
a
container I cover it in glad wrap to
keep the soil from drying out.’
Aliyah Connelly-Richards (left)- ‘Use
a clean hand held sprayer bottle of
water to dampen soil and water the
seedlings. This prevents overwatering
and helps to not disturb seeds while
germinating’.
Christine Rogers also had a good
gardening tip - Best seed raising tip:
Use a polystyrene cooler box
(sometimes butchers, fishmongers or
supermarkets give away for free) to
place your seed trays and little seed
pots in. Seeds come up in 2-3 days
instead of two weeks as it is so well
insulated!

CAN DO from KAIWAKA CAN
Before Covid Kaiwaka Can was making good progress in
getting things moving. Since then we have had almost 2
years of atrocious weather it has been hard to move forward. This is not to say
that we have not been working quietly in the background to keep things moving.
Over this period it has been a hard time for all Businesses, Farmers and Families
to name a few. It has been a time with a lot of negativity and stress.
Kaiwaka’s Wider Community has had a couple events over the past year (The
great 4 Square Christmas Party and the Lantern Festival) to try to help ease the
stress. There will be more to come. All these are great opportunities to shake off
the effects of the past couple of years and meet other people in the community.
At Kaiwaka Can we are looking to the future and can now confirm several
projects are now up and running.
PONTOON PROJECT
Firstly our Pontoon Project. We have just been granted the money required to
have the design work done. This pontoon will be situated in McClean Park 1947
(next to Motel) and we have again engaged Bridgeit to design the Pontoon to the
point where we can take it to the consent stage. The pontoon will accommodate
the launching of kayaks for people to enjoy the surrounding river systems of the
Kaipara.
SKATE PARK
Secondly, after the land was donated by John McClean for use by the
Community, we have also advanced to the concept stage of the skate park for
McClean Park 2022 (next to St John Hall) which is stage one of the
development to make this a family and community area for all to enjoy. With the
underpass to the walking bridges it links the other park and in the future a
walkway / pump track around the peninsula to Eutopia. This will also link up to
the KSA and the Kauri Walk.
We are also starting to organise the 2024 Lantern Festival which we hope will
be bigger and involve the whole Community.
If you are interested in any of these projects, come along to our meetings. These
are held on the 3rd Wednesday of the Month at the Archie Bull Hall behind the
Church, at 5.30pm.
All these activities are able to be viewed on our web site kaiwakacan.nz.

FILANI MACASSEY and
HISTORIC RESEARCH WW2
PILOTS
Filani Macassey (Fijian/ Tongan-Scottish) is a local artist
based in Kaiwaka who is being supported by the Arts
Foundation NZ 2023 crowd funding campaign.
The crowd funding will enable Filani Macassey to further
develop a project around her research into two WW2
pilots, one was her father’s younger brother and the other
pilot a Fijian chief’s son. Both young men enrolled in the
RNZAF and both died having earned their wings.
Ratu Dovi, pictured mid right, was head boy and Captain
of the rugby First XV and the cricket XI at Whanganui
College.
Filani’s Dad never spoke about his younger brother
Michael Earnest Macassey, pictured right, who actually
died practicing a loop manoeuvre. He was only 23 years
old. Filani said, “But the most amazing thing is that dad
started a small plane service in Fiji, which I think was also
his way to remember his brother by.”
“I started looking at this project a year ago, it will be
another year before it is ready to be exhibited. With the
crowd funding I will be working with the APS Editions
director, John Pusateri on a stone lithograph, which will
be printed on Fijian masi, a traditional hand beaten fibre.”
The artist says the lithograph series will incorporate an
ancient Pacific Island material with a printing process that
dates back to the late eighteenth-century Europe.

ARMISTICE DAY
Armistice Day has been observed every year since 1919 with a
two-minute silence. Held each year at the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month (November), the silence coincides with the
time in 1918 at which the First World War came to an end and is
observed at war memorials and in public places throughout the
UK and Commonwealth. After four terrible years, fighting in the
First World War finally ended with the signing of an armistice between
Germany and the Allies.
The First World War was finally over, leaving more than 16,000 New
Zealanders dead and tens of thousands more wounded – over 5300 soldiers died
in 1918 alone. Between October and December another 9000 people died during
the influenza pandemic.

DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
Some time before Christmas we'll be
changing the selection of titles we hold
from Dargaville Library. If you've been
meaning to take a good look at what's on
those shelves in our library now is your
time. The books don't need to be back with
us before the swap, you can hold on to
them until their due dates and/or extend
them if needed.
CHRISTMAS HOLIDAY
Kaiwaka Library will be closing for two
weeks over the holiday period. Our last day
in 2023 will be Saturday 23 December, and
we will reopen on Monday 8 January 2024.
Some time in December, when the usual
borrowing period runs into the holidays,
due dates will be automatically extended to
8 January until the normal borrowing
period goes past that day. You don't need
to do anything, this will just happen in the
library management system as the items are
checked out or renewed.
TELEPHONE WORKING
We have phone service in the library once
again, with our usual number 09 4312 539.
Right now, as I type this report, there is no
call forwarding set up on it, though I'm
working on that so calls can be sent to my
mobile if there's no answer.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
We are still in need of some more members
in our team. Can you spare one day a
month (or more) to work in the library? All
you need is to know is the basics of how to
use a Windows computer, and have access
to emails. Full training will be given. Send
an
to
me
kaiwaka.library@gmail.com to let me
know you're interested.
BOOK REVIEW
Recently,
I've
read
the
Fractured
Europe series by Dave
Hutchinson.
That's
(1) Europe in Autumn,
(2) Europe at Midnight,
(3) Europe in Winter,
and (4) Europe at Dawn.
"
Rudi is a cook in a Kraków
restaurant, but when his
boss asks Rudi to help a cousin escape from
the country he’s trapped in, a new career –
part spy, part people-smuggler – begins.
Following multiple economic crises and a
devastating flu pandemic, Europe has
fractured into countless tiny nations, duchies,
polities and republics. Recruited by the
shadowy organisation Les Coureurs des
Bois..."
I found this an enjoyable and engaging
read. None of the books are lengthy.
You do need to read them in order to
follow the story. The full series is on our
new shelves and are free to borrow. Place a
hold via Enterprise* or the phone app to
have them put aside for you to borrow.
See you in the library ~Wendy
