BRENDA MEETS THE PRINCE
Brenda Fergu-
son
received
her Gold Duke
of Edinburgh
award at a spe-
cial ceremony
to celebrate the
60th year of the
Duke of Edin-
burgh's Hillary
Award in Ao-
tearoa, hosted
by Wellington
College on Sat-
urday 18 No-
vember 2023.
Over 80 recipi-
ents were pre-
sented their Gold Award certificates by Prince Edward:
HRH The Duke of Edinburgh KG GCVO - Global Patron of
the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. Sir spoke to
and was photographed with each recipient as they received
their awards.
Brenda began her bronze award as a 14-year-old in 2018 and
completed gold in January 2023. Each of the three levels
(bronze, silver and gold) involve increasing amounts of vol-
untary service, adventurous expedition journeys, learning
new skills, and physical recreation. At gold level participants
also complete a residential project - a purposeful activity
over at least five days in an unfamiliar environment with
people they have never met before. For Brenda this was
aboard the R Tucker Thompson sailing ship.
Brenda said, “The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award
helped me develop outdoor, people and social skills that are
not provided in everyday life. I really enjoyed my time com-
pleting the programme and would recommend it to all young
people considering doing it."
FROM A BARN IN KAIWAKA
‘My son Chris has spent
the last 4yrs converting
his MX5 and entered it
into this year's Hot
Wheels
Legends
Competition. At the end
of October he appeared
in the Northern Advocate
having won the Australia
-New Zealand level.
'Great work Chris'.
That put him in the international semi-finals against
contestants from all over the world – and he was selected as
one of the 10 finalists. Up against entries from the States,
Mexico, Indonesia, Germany, Poland, France, and the UK,
the ultimate judging took place on November 12th. The
overall winner gets his/her creation immortalised as a die-
cast model sold world-wide. The winner was... our own,
Kaiwaka's own, Chris Watson.
WeeHee!! (broken ass dance) – proud mum Gill.
Mattel vice-president and global head of design for vehicles,
Ted Wu, said Watson's victory "embodies what this tour is
all about. Chris' journey from rural New Zealand to securing
a spot in the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends is truly
inspirational," he said in the statement. Chimera will be
immortalised as a 1:64 Hot Wheels vehicle and inducted into
the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends. ~ Ref Newshub.
KAIWAKA SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING
Kaiwaka Scottish Country Dancing Club ran a Labour
Weekend Scottish Music and Dance event in Kaiwaka
with the support of a grant from the Kaipara Creative
Communities Fund. This grant meant that we were
able to go ahead with our plans knowing that we were
financially sound even if not many attended.
We were delighted with the results. We had over 80
dancers and musicians on site from Friday to Monday.
Over 50 of these were participants from across New
Zealand bringing business into the area through
accommodation and tourism. We hired Kaiwaka,
Archie Bull, St John and Hakaru halls for our event.
The large numbers enabled us to make

WEATHER
OCTOBER
What a way to end a month. Cyclone
Lola certainly made her presence felt
on the 29th and 30th of October but
thankfully and luckily not as destructive
as Cyclone Gabrielle in February. At
our house the rainfall over the two days
of the storm was 73mm. Thank
goodness we didn’t get the full force of
the storm as I have heard reports of
some areas getting over 200mm of rain.
The total rainfall at our place for the
month of October was 155.5mm over
18 days.
The highest recording I have made for
the month of October was in 2021 with
215.5mm over 21 days.
The lowest rainfall recorded for an
October was in 2010 with a mere 12mm
over 2 days and then the same in 2013
also with 12mm only this time it was
over 3 days.
A friend of mine has got a great answer
for anybody who asks what the weather
is going to be for the day. He says -
“well its not raining at the moment but
it will rain”, he doesn’t need to say
when the rain will come. I quite like his
theory. Until next month, take care!
~ Cheers, Karen

to the Kaiwaka War Memorial Hall to help support the upkeep
of the vital place it holds in the community - pictured below
Diane, Pam and Lindsey receiving their very kind donations.
The atmosphere during the whole weekend was happy and
energised. The bond and understanding between dancers, teachers
and musicians was strengthened. It was especially good to see the
newer dances gaining confidence from dancing with older
experienced dancers. The support and care shown to those less
able, and more frail was great to see.
Everyone at the school helped to build the magical
atmosphere but we would especially like to acknowledge
the extensive time and effort put into this project by our
international musical gurus. We were disappointed that we
had not had uptake from musicians in the area but if you are
interested in future events, please contact Elaine.
The members of the Kaiwaka Scottish Country Dancing

THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK
‘Keep what you know to yourself and you will be safe; talk
too much, and you are done for’ - Proverbs 13:3 CEV.
Simply put, a tendency to speak without thinking will keep
getting us into trouble.
The story is told of a vacuum cleaner salesperson who had been
given remote rural area as his territory. He was going from
farmhouse to farmhouse on his first day on the job, attempting
to sell vacuum cleaners. As he arrived at one farmhouse, he
knocked on the door and was met by a farmer's wife who asked
him what he wanted. Without asking permission, he shoved
right past her into the kitchen and said, ‘I'm selling vacuum
cleaners.’ Shocked, she replied, ‘Wait a minute!’. But he
demanded, ‘Ma'am, before you say anything, I want to show
you something.’ Then he reached into his bag, pulled out a pail
of dirt, and threw it across her kitchen floor. ‘If my vacuum
cleaner won't pick up all that dirt,’ he bragged, ‘then I'll eat it!’
She looked at him and said, ‘Then you better get busy, 'cause we
ain't got no electricity!’
How often we have to eat the words we so recklessly toss on
the floor of everyday living! Be careful.
An unknown poet wrote, ‘Be careful of the words you say
and keep them soft and sweet. You never know from
day to day which ones you'll have to eat.’ So unless
you want to eat your words, think carefully before
speaking.

KAIWAKA
VOLUNTEER
FIRE
BRIGADE - ‘Have a clear entrance’
In1963 the local fire brigade began with ‘a transportable
pump capable of delivering 60 gallons of water per
minute’*. This was on a trailer that could be towed by a
volunteer’s car. The Brigade now has a brilliant well
equipped appliance. From Fire Chief John Bowmar, “the
Fire Truck is a ‘little bit’ wider than a Toyota Corolla”.
Following recent call outs the need for clear driveways is
essential in case of emergencies.
The midday siren remind us that we have a wonderful group
of volunteers ready to come out in an emergency.

THANK YOU
Another year is
coming to a close
and we have had
more chances to
connect
with
community groups
as well as being
involved
in
fundraising.
We
are hoping to continue with the
Bunnings sausage sizzle in March
next year. We find that the
combination of Mark’s donuts and
Bo’s sausages a very good one,
netting us around $500 each time.
Thank you to the crew who step up
to make this a success and also for the
support we receive from Bunnings.
The President’s Scholarship has now
closed, and the awardees may now
know of their success. We have always
had very interesting recipients of this
award and it is great to hear where their
career has taken them this far, or if they
are school leavers, what they have
planned. It is also good to hear from
them several years down the track when
we know how the award has helped
them out.
ROTARY YOUTH EXCHANGE
This year, for the first time in many
years, we do have an RYE student
going to Belgium for 2024. Jaime is
joining 11 others from Rotary
Districts 9910 and 9920 as outbound
students to various countries. They have
had orientation weekends to meet each
other, and at some of these, inbound
students have also been present. Jaime
has undertaken a great deal of
fundraising to complete this venture
and has had to learn French. Jaime has
had a chance to meet (on-line) three of
her four host families – she will stay at
each place for three months. The
families Jaime has met have three
youngsters in them, but there is always
a student around Jaime’s age. Jaime is a
keen netballer (she is in the Otamatea
High School No1 team) – a sport not
played in Belgium – so she is looking
forward to the alternatives that might be
on offer. Jaime has given us a
presentation and we look forward to her
communications throughout 2024.
SENIORS’ AFTERNOON TEA
We had a very successful Seniors’
afternoon tea, at which the singers
Maura Flower trains had a chance to
perform in front of a most unknown
audience.
We
all
enjoy
these
afternoons,
not
only
for
the
entertainment but also the social
connections that take place.
DRIVER MENTORING
We continue to get a good uptake with
the Driver Mentoring scheme and some
very good results as well. Most of our
students tend to go to Dargaville to sit
their Restricted, but even if that is their
choice, we do have an expectation of
them completing some lessons in
Whangarei as well. The latter is
important as students need to know
the vagaries of lane changing, traffic
lights and varying speed zones. As
has been the case in the past three
years, the students who complete the
test in the most effective manner have
been able to spend some time driving
on both the open road and around their
communities. The approximately 40
hours we give them is only about a third
of the suggested driving time. Thank
you to my Mentors who give their time
freely to support the learners. Recently,
we have been able to provide the car for
High School students to complete the
practical portion of the Defensive
Driving Course, if they do not have
their own car available.
Thank you also to Roadsafe Northland
and People Potential for being there to
support us.
Rotary hopes that the Christmas Season
will be a chance to not only connect
with family members but also a chance
to share with neighbours and friends
within your community.

day of school. Well done to our all prize winners - especially to our Dux Charm

CHESS NATIONALS
Congratulations to our
chess player who competed
recently in the chess
nationals
at
Alfriston
College. There were over
300 players competing with
our team consisting of Max
Bull, Jackson Wintle,
Elliot
Hartles
and
Matthew
and
Caleb
Laurence-Goss playing in
the senior division. It was
tough competition, and we
were the only team
from Northland, as
well as the youngest
team in the division
with
three
intermediate
aged
students in our team.
Our team collectively
earned enough points
to award them a Merit
certificate
and
Jackson got top player
for the school, with
the highest number of
wins.
‘We have a very successful Duke of Edinburgh (DOE) programme at Otamatea
High School, with dozens of students involved in either the bronze, silver or gold
award. This is very much due to the dedication of Robyn Bruce, our award
leader, who not only manages the DOE Hillary award programmes, but
participates in the adventurous journeys and helps the student with their
fundraising efforts. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the DOE programme
in New Zealand, and to celebrate the occasion, a special Award Celebration was
held last Saturday at Government House in Wellington. The Duke of Edinburgh
himself, HRH Prince Edward was in attendance, along with their Excellencies the
Governor-General of New Zealand - The Rt Hon Dame Cindy Kiro, and Dr
Richard Davis. I was delighted to have received an invitation to see Robyn
receive one of only six inaugural Excellence Service Awards, to recognise the
outstanding work Robyn has done over the years. She has personally seen over
100 students achieve their gold award! Our little community in the Kaipara had a
massive presence at this event, with Ken Hames, National Director for the Duke
of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award, Sharlene McCormick, DOE Board Member as
well as DOE instructors Stephen and Andrea Orchard all present. I wish to
publicly congratulate Robyn on this amazing achievement. It was a very special
ceremony and an amazing experience, especially getting to meet and talk to the
Duke of Edinburgh himself. ~ Principal, Dirk Smyth

The Den Sale 2023
Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
Saturday December 2nd
Maungaturoto Country Club
Bickerstaffe Road
Time 10am -3pm
The Country Club will have food, tea
and coffee available.
Yesterday: various items of historical
and collectable interest!
Today: hand tools, furniture, paintings
All sorts of things!
Tomorrow: Has not happened yet, but
there ....
If people have contributions they
would like to make contact Albie
Paton on 027494448 or any of the
team that run The Den during the
week and we will make arrangements
to inspect and pick up.
Over the last few years The Den has
made substantial contributions well in
excess of $500.000 to Health and
Wellbeing causes throughout the old
Otamatea County region. Major
beneficiaries have been the Dementia
unit in Maungaturoto, The Northland
Rescue Helicopter Trust, Kaipara
Coastguard, Lions Clubs for various
local causes to do with Health and
Wellbeing. Other organisations to
benefit have been Linking Hands,
Otamatea Community House, St John,
Flood relief concert, St John and
Paramedic cover for events (Paparoa
Show, Northland Motocross Champs),
Gumboot Day and many others with
money and kind.
All monies raised by The Den will go
towards further help for those
previously mentioned and other worthy
causes within the parameters of health
and wellbeing as they come to hand.
Other
member
clubs
of
the
Maungaturoto Country Club and
outside organisations are welcome to
participate if they feel they can benefit
from the crowd we hope to attract.
Remember about 18 months ago we
held a similar event, and we hope this
one will be equally as big and
successful as that. It could be a chance
to get an unusual Xmas present for
someone or something old and
collectable.
Any help on the day and during the lead
up and in the future will be very much
appreciated.

GARDENING for the YOUNG & OLD
Here we are at the end of November
and a month till Christmas; the early
blooming roses will be in flower –
when they wither make sure to dead-
head and new buds will form – they
should carry on till autumn. Don’t
let the sap sucking pests suck the
goodness out of the buds!
Pest Buster: Fill a spray bottle with
rinse water from the washing
machine, add a little dishwashing
liquid and deal to the little blighters.
At this time of
the
year
(usually)
watering
is
essential
to
reduce the risk
of
disease
among
susceptible plants such as the roses
and vegetables. Avoid wetting the
foliage and allow water to soak
down to the roots. To maintain
strong growth and good yields give
vege plants, roses, fruit trees,
perennials and summer flowering
shrubs an application of general
fertiliser.
Tomatoes and potatoes should be
sprayed with a copper fungicide to
protect the leaves from blight. Pinch
out the laterals on tomatoes to
ensure energy goes into fruiting
trusses.
Citrus trees need their
balance of fertiliser now –
moisten soil first.
Salad crops are best when grown
quickly – make several smaller
plantings a fortnight apart; keep
them weed free, well-watered and
give a weekly feed of liquid
fertiliser.
Are
you
going
away
for
Christmas?
Holiday preparation can include
making a deep well watered sawdust
patch to keep well-watered pot
plants in.
Spray brassicas for white butterfly –
Handy Hint: When you buy a
bunch of spring onions, trim the
roots to 1.5cm then plant them in the
herb garden. In no time they will
grow new leaves; harvest them low
to ground and they will quickly
regenerate.
From Bill Wards ‘Edible Garden’: 1.
Mint grown in pots and placed
among cabbages will repel white
butterflies.
2. The onion family – chives, leeks
and garlic – planted among leafy
vegies such as lettuce, spinach and
rhubarb will dispel aphids.
Enjoy your time in the garden and
being out in the fresh air. ~ Mr Jo.

ATHLETICS DAY
‘We had a fantastic Kaiwaka School Athletics Day with lots of whānau present. It
was great to see all of our children involved, especially our special needs
children. A big thank you to Katherine Brown for organising an awesome day
with lots of activities. In our staff meeting reflection, we decided it would be
good to look at including shot put and
discus next year.
SCHOOL POOL
The pool is now open for the
children’s swimming during school
time.
We need some volunteers to be
trained up for over the Christmas
period if we are going to keep the
pool open for the community to use
during this time. In the past, our
caretaker Len has done this. Due to
his resignation this is no longer an option. If you would like to be trained up,
please contact the school and we will book you into a pool chemical course. We
need around three people. This will require being timetabled on over the
Christmas holidays morning and night to keep the pool running. We will also
need volunteers to test the pool during the day. No training needed for this part of
the job.
Kaiwaka School swimming pool keys are available from the office. $80 for
whānau, $100 for community members - No Eftpos
SCHOOL LIBRARY
We have another big property project starting during the Christmas holidays. The
school library has been deemed end of life and is to be demolished. We will have
to put the library books into storage while the new library is being built. The
teachers will access the National Library books for class use.’~

BOOK REVIEWS
There are so many good books on the
shelves! I have so many to recommend,
I will try to keep it brief...
The Calculating Stars by Mary
Robinette Kowal is the first title in the
Lady Astronaut series. It was so good
I've gone and ordered the rest of the
series for our shelves.
Catch a Falling Star by Eileen
Merriman is a prequel to Catch Me
When I Fall, which is also on our
shelves. Excellent teen fiction that's a
good read for everyone.
I've finished the Cornish Cream Tea
series by Cressida McLaughlin recently
- always a lovely read! - and have
ordered book #8 for when it is released
next year. Read them in order to get the
character development from one to the
next.
The Slow Roll by Simon Lendrum is
an exciting thriller set in Auckland.
The Redgum River Retreat by Sandie
Docker was a delightful Australian
book. We have several by this author on
our shelves, they're not a series so you
can read them in any order.
Place a hold for these or any other item
on our shelves via Enterprise*, or the
library app, to be next in the queue.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
