KAIWAKA LIGHTS
The Christmas Lights and Village and ‘snow’ delighted
many travellers and local folk. The Lights were noticed by
Emma, RNZ reporter, who caught up with Mark for a radio
interview. She certainly enjoyed speaking with him.
Kaiwaka was included along with other larger towns
throughout New Zealand e.g. Ashburton. Well done Pam and
Mark! The interview was at https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/
programmes/morningreport/audio/2018919494/which-nz-
town-has-the-most-christmas-spirit
A note from Pam and Mark, “To everyone that visited our
Christmas Lights and made a Donation to the Kaiwaka Fire
Brigade we raised a total of $5466.70.
A special thank you to the anonymous donor who made a
very substantial donation. Thank you Caltex for your help
with parking and your donation.
See you all next Christmas.”

KAIWAKA
WEATHER
DECEMBER
2023
Happy New Year, I trust you all had a
reasonably good festive season. Ours
was relatively quiet as the wind was in
the right direction to take most of the
Northern Bass noise away from us. The
concert organisers and patrons however
had to deal with the deluges of rain
each and every day. Some rain was
needed for farms and gardens alike but
123.5mm over 3 days was a bit more
than needed.
The rainfall recorded at my place for
December 2023 was 218.5 over 11
days.
The total for 2023 was a whopping
2883mm over 199 days which was
753.
5mm higher than the wettest year I
have recorded which was in 2022.
Our driest December was in 2015 with
a mere 27mm.
Derek (in the Hakaru Valley) recorded
193mm for December over 12 days.
Hakaru Valley rainfall for the year
was 2577mm over 208 days. 649mm
higher than previous wettest year
which also was 2022.
February 2023 was Derek’s highest
monthly record with 601mm, my
highest month was also February and I
recorded 702mm.
Take care, Karen

BE PREPARED
About this time last year we had several weather
events
which saw a need for action plan to be put in
place. Along with the Fire Chief and a few other
interested locals Kaiwaka Can took on the challenge, and along with John the
local Fire Chief and a few other interested locals Kaiwaka Emergency Response
Group was born, this covers the areas from Hakaru, Oneriri, Kaiwaka township
and Oruawharo and is now a sub-Committee of Kaiwaka Can. This Group works
alongside and under the guidance of Civil Defence Northland.
In the case of future Events like these here are a few pointers to help us be
better prepared.
1. Make sure you have a supply of Bottled Water, dry foods, candles and
torches with Batteries stored in an Airtight, waterproof container. Along
with Gas for the BBQ to cook.
2. ALWAYS your first call if in danger and need help dial 111.
3. For those inconvenienced the St John Hall opposite Kaiwaka Four Square
will be opened and will be our command centre. We have other places
available if not accessible.
4. Check for Information on Facebook Pages of Kaiwaka Can, Kaiwaka
Community, Hakaru Community or Kaipara Council Civil Defence Page.
Or have a battery powered Radio if no power.
5. DOWNLOAD Antenno App on your Cell phone. Handy for Emergencies.
Our first meeting for the year will be held on Wednesday February 21st, 5.30pm
at the Archie Bull Hall behind the Church next to the Four Square. Everyone is
welcome to come along and help progress our Little Town of Lights. Help us
make a family friendly Community to be proud of. ~ David

BBQ
The Rotary year has
started well for us with a
very enjoyable BBQ at
President Babe’s (and
Val’s) home in Paparoa.
We were very fortunate
that the evening was
perfect and the bush around us ensured
that we were treated to a variety of bird
noises. As is usually the case with
potluck meals, there was a wide variety
of salads and desserts on hand. We all
had a chance to catch up on happenings
over the holiday period.
GABRIELLA and TEINA SEAGER
At our final meeting for 2023, we were
able to welcome a number of
community members including the
Principal of Otamatea High School and
the Paparoa Lions President.
We were privileged to have our joint
President
Scholarship
winners
(Gabriella and Teina Seager) talk to
us and present images of some of the
projects they have completed during the
course of their studies. Both of these
young ladies went to Otamatea (five
years apart) and both have chosen
courses in which they can make the best
use of their creativity skills. Gabriella
showed us an animated film called
Flour Power and Teina showed us how
she constructed 3D models, using a
variety of textures and use of space.
They showed what can be achieved on
leaving school, and it would seem that
both are on the path to becoming life-
long learners, being adaptable to
changing circumstances. They will both
receive $1,000 to go towards their
future studies.
INTERACT CLUB?
While, as a Club we have assisted in
fundraising (with the provision of
catered meals) by DOE (Duke of
Edinburgh) and netball groups, we have
also provided financial support to both
DOE and William Pike. The Otamatea
High School has been very fortunate to
have the dedication of Robyn Bruce
(for 18 years) to provide the DOE
programme. However, we are now
looking at other ways in which we can
engage senior youth at the High School.
There is some thought being given to
establish an Interact Club, which is
specifically for senior school students.
DRIVER MENTORS
Driver mentoring has taken a break
during the statutory holidays. We are
very grateful for the mentors we have
on hand and the support we receive
from Roadsafe Northland and People
Potential. However, our numbers are
limited so if you believe you might be
able to help us in assisting people to get
their restricted licence, please get in
touch with me (021 142 0357). We
have an automatic car which we use,
and there is no cost to participants –
apart from the cost of their licence.
Mentors can choose to be available on
only one specific day, if that works best
for them.

‘Have a clear entrance’
The Brigade now has a brilliant well equipped appliance and it is a BIG truck to

especially”. Following recent call outs the need for clear driveways is essential in
case of emergencies.

TOP of the ROCK!
Kaiwaka Sports Association’s
annual multi-sport event,
the Top of the Rock, is back
it will be held on
Sunday 17th March 2024
St Patrick’s Day.
There are two running/walking
routes: a 5km and a 10km. The 5km
route goes around the two lakes near
Baldrock Rd. The 10km route goes
around those two lakes then traverses
private land not usually open to the
public, reaching a lofty spot on the
hills at the base of the Brynderwyns
with fantastic views to the ocean to the
east and through to the Kaipara
Harbour to the west.
There will be a Kids Fun Bike Ride
for children under 11 years, which is
free to enter. It’s a short, flat course
(going around the sports complex
grounds, school grounds and a
neighbour’s farm), and takes around 10
minutes, so it’s perfect for the young
ones. Children will need a bike, helmet
and shoes.
Prizegiving and entertainment will
be held at the Sports Complex
afterwards, with prizes for place-
getters and lots of great spot prizes.
Entries are now open
– check
on our website or Facebook page
(Kaiwaka Top of the Rock 2024) for
more information. If businesses or
individuals
are
keen
to
offer
sponsorship, we would of course love
to hear from you. Full briefing
provided.

New rating valuations on the way
for Kaipara – QV
Kaipara property owners will soon
receive
new
three-yearly
rating
valuations in the post.
Updated values have been prepared for
all 16,234 properties in the district by
independent valuers Quotable Value
(QV) on behalf of Kaipara District
Council. They reflect the likely price a
property would have sold for on 1
September 2023, not including chattels.
Since the district’s last revaluation in
2020, the value of residential housing
has increased by an average of 37%.
The average house value is now at
$843,000, while the corresponding
average land value has increased by
70% to a new average of $473,000.
QV
Auckland/Northern
manager
Sanjay Kanji said the property market
underwent a dynamic three-year period,
marked by record-low interest rates that
helped fuel substantial value growth in
2021, before a correction set in from
mid-2022 and 2023.
“Since we last revalued Kaipara in
2020, we’ve witnessed a strong increase
in residential property value levels
overall. Though property values have
softened over the past 18 months or so,
they are substantially higher than their
pre-pandemic levels,” he said.
“Properties at the more affordable end
of the ladder have experienced the
highest increases due to competition
from first-home buyers and investors,
who remain the most active groups in
these markets, and have therefore
experienced some of the largest average
value
increases
since
2020
–
particularly in and around Ruawai and
Dargaville.”
“Kaipara’s
lifestyle
market
has
experienced
average
growth
since
2020.
Mangawhai,
the
fastest
growing
coastal settlement
in New Zealand
has
experienced
the highest increases. Retirees, holiday
makers and local residents are most
active within this market. The recently
constructed Puhoi to Warkworth
motorway has increased accessibility to
Mangawhai.
New
developments
including the Te Arai and Tara Iti golf
courses and Mangawhai Central has
contributed to the area’s growth,” Mr.
Kanji added.
Meanwhile,
commercial
property
values have increased by 25% and
property values in the industrial sector
have increased by 37% since the
district’s last rating valuation in 2020.
Commercial and industrial land values
have also increased by 59% and 72%
respectively.
The total rateable value for the district
is now $15.8 billion, with the land
value of those properties now valued at
$9.7 billion.
What are rating valuations?
Rating valuations are usually carried
out on all New Zealand properties every
three years to help local councils assess
rates for the following three-year
period. They are not intended to be used
for any other purpose, including raising
finance with banks or as insurance
valuations.
They reflect the likely selling price of a
property at the effective revaluation
date, which was 1 September 2023, and
do not include chattels. Any changes in
the market since that time will not be
included in the new rating valuations,
which often means that a sale price
achieved today will be different to the
new rating valuation.
The updated rating valuations are then
independently audited by the Office of
the Valuer General to ensure they meet
rigorous quality standards, before the
new rating valuations are confirmed and
posted to property owners.
If owners do not agree with their rating
valuation, they have a right to object
through the objection process before
7th March 2024.

GARDENING for the
YOUNG & OLD
Welcome to the new year,.
Welcome to gardening in
2024!
If you are new to gardening here are
some ideas:
You do not need lots of ‘dug over’
and composted garden beds, as you
can grow lots of vegetables and
flowers in small raised beds that you
create yourself with off-cuts of
timber or old car tyres.
If your New Year resolution was to
enjoy gardening whether young or
old, here are a few essentials for
vege garden:
A. if space is limited use all of your
open sunny space which is free
draining and has good soil.
B. most edible plants need lots of
sun for success.
C. your rows of vegetable need to
face east to west to maximise heat
from the sun.
D. Grow taller crops e.g. corn, at
‘the back’ so there is less likelihood
of shading shorter vegies..
For a range of vegetables that
provide the best crop for the least
space try the following:
Radish, Beetroot, peppers, dwarf
varieties of beans and peas, lettuce,
mesculin, rocket, cherry tomatoes,
cucumber, baby carrots, spinach,
and the oriental vegetables such as
bok choy.
These vegetables are all high in
nutritional value and straightforward
to grow - either from seed or
seedling plants. You will enjoy
growing and harvesting them.
NATIVES
Now
to
diversify
and touch
on natives
that
look
absolutely
fantastic
and enhance the home garden:
Ferns are characteristic of the New
Zealand bush and in a garden setting
often impart a feeling of tranquillity
and cool growth that is encountered
in our native forests.
The Hen and Chicken Fern
(mouku or manamana; Latin -
Asplenium bulbiferum) a great
example; the Rengarenga Lily is a
great addition to the rock garden and
is very hardy when close to the
coast; ornamental Tea-Tree which
come in various colours are great
along fences of the hose section;
Hebe is a great hardy native shrub -
the bees love the several varieties.
Enjoy your time in the garden and
being out in the fresh air. ~ Mr Jo.

BOOK REVIEW
Recently, I've read Starter Villain by
John Scalzi, and can't recommend it
highly enough! "
Inheriting
your
mysterious uncle's supervillain business is
more complicated than you might
imagine. Sure, there are the things you'd
expect. The undersea volcano lairs. The
minions. The plots to take over the world.
The international networks of rivals who
want you dead. Much harder to get used
to... are the sentient, language-using,
computer-savvy cats. And the fact that in
the
overall
organization,
they're
management..."
It's
well-paced,
hilarious, and made me look more
carefully at my cats!
Also, Bonded by Ian Austin. It's the 4th
book in the Dan Calder series. Like the
author himself, Calder is an ex-British
policeman who emigrated to New
Zealand. Read the books in order for
the best effect, though I think this
would stand alone okay. Agency,
Second Grave, and Frozen Summer
are all on our
shelves. "
Dan
Calder's
thrown in at
the deep end to
help
Police
unravel
the
evidence of a
terrorist
bombing plot
at
Auckland
International
Airport,
but
the one thing
he needs most
of all is the one
thing he doesn't have .... time."
See you in the library! ~Wendy

WINNIE THE POOH ~ A.A.MILNE
100 YEARS
‘First publication
Christopher Robin's teddy bear made his character début, under the name
Edward, in A. A. Milne's poem, "Teddy Bear", in the edition of 13 February
1924 of Punch, and the same poem was published in Milne's book of
children's verse When We Were Very Young (6 November 1924).
Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared by name on 24 December 1925, in a Christmas
story commissioned and published by the London newspaper Evening News.
The first collection of Pooh stories appeared in the book Winnie-the-Pooh. The
Evening News Christmas story reappeared as the first chapter of the book. At the
beginning, it explained that Pooh was in fact Christopher Robin's Edward Bear,
who had been renamed by the boy. He was renamed after an American black
bear at London Zoo called Winnie who got her name from the fact that her owner
had come from Winnipeg, Canada. The book was published in October 1926 by
the publisher of Milne's earlier children's work, Methuen, in England, E. P.
Dutton in the United States, and McClelland & Stewart in Canada. The book was
an immediate critical and commercial success.
The children's author and literary critic
John Rowe Townsend described Winnie-
the-Pooh and its sequel The House at
Pooh Corner as "the spectacular British
success of the 1920s" and praised its
light, readable prose’. Ref. Wikipedia
From ‘When We Were Very Young’ - a
book of poetry by A. A. Milne.
TEDDY BEAR
A bear, however hard he tries,
Grows tubby without exercise.
Our Teddy Bear is short and fat,
Which is not to be wondered at;
He gets what exercise he can
By falling off the ottoman,
But generally seems to lack
The energy to clamber back. ...
