KAIWAKA’S TOA HENDERSON
From Shearing Sports
New
Zealand:
“Northland shearer Toa
Henderson was in ever-
increasingly dominant
form as he entered the
last weekend before the
Golden Shears with
major
wins
at
Taumarunui on Friday
and Apiti on Saturday.
In the 20-sheep, six-
man Open finals at both
the Taumarunui Shears
and the Apiti Sports
Shears, each of which
attracted more than 200
shearers
and
woolhandlers across the
grades,
Henderson,
from Kaiwaka, posted
fastest time with best
quality points both on
the shearing board and with the finished product in the pens.
The Taumarunui win was comfortable enough, with his
16m 48.04s the quickest by 10 seconds and a 2.332pts
margin over Te Kuiti shear Mark Grainger.
But at Apiti 24 hours later, he smashed ‘em, his 15m 26sec
being a record for a 20-sheep final at Apiti, finishing 23
seconds quicker-than and five points clear-of runner-up,
three-times Apiti Open winner and miracle man David
Buick.
With the Pahiatua Shears [and yes, he won this too} still to
come on Sunday to complete the build-up to the 62nd
Golden Shears, starting in Masterton on Thursday, it was
for Henderson, scoring his eighth and ninth Open-final wins
of the season, almost the complete package needed to win
the big Open final next Saturday night.
But, yet to shear in shearing’s glamour 20 minutes, he
remained in one-step-at-a-time mode after an Apiti final that
had three shearers from overseas, possibly a first for a major
Open final in New Zealand, and said: “The top of the
country were here, except one, who we all know who it is,
that wasn’t.”
The absentee was Hawke’s Bay shearer Rowland Smith,
going for a 9th Golden Shears Open win this week and
likely to be the TAB opening-price favourite, despite just
three shows and one win in 2024.’
Toa deserves all the success he gets, his dedication and
preparation to shearing sport is very professional.
Apiti Shears were a win For Toa’s Dad, Mike in the Vet
Shears - well done, Hendersons.
Photo above: Toa on the handpiece in a local woolshed.

KAIWAKA WEATHER
JANUARY
There is not a lot to report about this
month as the weather has been a lot
more settled and the rain was nicely
spread out through the month. Apart
from a day with 18mm on the 6th and
then a day with 63mm on the 15th
January, which came at the right time
for farms and gardens alike. We then
got another welcome 13mm on the
29th.
I recorded 125mm over 11 days for
January.
The wettest January recorded by me
was – surprise, surprise - 2023 with
603mm.
Previous to last year the other wettest
January was in 2011 with 352mm.
The driest January was in 2020 with
9mm and 2013 with 9.5mm.
Derek recorded in the Hakaru Valley, 161mm over 11 days for January.
Our thoughts are with the Canterbury region fire fighters battling the drought
and fires. The ground and grass down there is tinder dry, so it doesn’t take much
to cause a fire.
Take care everyone and keep cool. ~ Cheers, Karen
Note: Karen’s mother, Stella Dowson saved this NZ Herald clipping of 17
February 1986 recalling February weather in Kaiwaka on 15 February in 1886.

Brian Plunkett, PHF
Condolences to the family of Brian
Plunkett, PHF (Paul Harris Fellow )
who passed away. Brian had been a
vital member of our Club for a number
of years.
Paparoa A & P Show
Before we had an official meeting of
the Club, a number of Rotarians were
able to support the Paparoa A & P
Show committee in a variety of ways.
Members were involved in setting up
and manning the stalls, gate duties and
clearing the hall at the conclusion of
events.
Driver Mentoring
Our Driver Mentoring continues to be
in demand, but we are very short of
Mentors. Please consider supporting us
in this manner if you have an hour or
two to give once a week. There are a
number of students at the High school
that require support. Depending on
student ability, up to 12 lessons can be
given. We are fortunate that testing is
now available in Dargaville both
through NZTA and Blue Light.
MELANIE MCKENZIE
The first speaker of the year,
Melanie McKenzie, who was our
RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership)
participant in April last year. The
attendees involved come from many
occupations, but the one thing they
have in common is the fact that all are
very motivated. It was obvious from
Melanie’s presentation that she gained
a number of skills which she has been
able to make good use of. Each day
commenced with an exercise regime
designed by a fellow participant and
Melanie has continued this and found
that this has been an invaluable way to
start the day. Melanie also became
more aware of the importance of
“leading from behind” so those around
you know that you have their back.
Melanie now feels she can react to
problems that arise in a less emotional
way, which helps remove the stress
from the situation.
The camp provided a variety of both
indoor and outdoor activities. Of the
speakers who impressed Melanie the
most
were
a
neuroscientist who spoke
about
research
into
Huntingdon’s disease; an
address from camp mum,
Fay, who provided a
positive perspective on
cultural
differences;
Groups were made up to formulate a
business plan and the winning group’s
idea was presented on closing night (to
which Rotarians were invited). This
group were concerned about the anti-
social activities some youngsters were
being involved in so developed a plan
to invite some of these at-risk
youngsters to a camp, accompanied by
one caregiver, at which they would be
given some tools to develop positive
life skills. (This is in the process of
being implemented by one social
agency.)
Two of the outdoor activities were:
The tree-top experience, where group
support was given to the less confident
climbers; They also planted 3,000
reeds on the adjacent sand dunes.
Melanie’s
presentation
was
an
affirmation of how this week impacts
positively on all attendees, something
that previous candidates have spoken
of enthusiastically.
FROM BELGIUM
We have also had the first email from
Jaime, the Rotary exchange student
our Club has supported to travel to
Belgium this year. Jaime has told us of
the support given by the first of four
host families she will be involved with.
We are aware of the challenges of
living in a society that speaks another
language, but Jaime started learning
French prior to leaving and aims to
become more competent as quickly as
she can.

GARDENING for YOUNG & OLD
Equipment
needed
by
people new to gardening:
Sharp secateurs for pruning
Long handle secateurs
(loppers)
A short handle fork and a
long handle fork for weeding
A stout spade for digging –
with a long handle to save
bending your back
A pruning saw for the
larger pruning jobs
A watering can is handy
Gardening gloves
And with your plants - ready
for a happy day in the garden
Good tools are important for
efficient and pleasurable
gardening (don’t put up with
old
rusty
blades
and
splintered handles). Your
gardening tools should be
comfortable to use and of
good balance.
PUMPKINS
It’s that time of summer
when pumpkin plants are
growing very vigorously and
producing abundant flowers.
When the vine has two or
three pumpkins on it take off
the growing tip, so the plants
energy goes into the fruit.
Give the plant regular
watering and feed with liquid
fertilizer (fish and seaweed).
If the pumpkin fruit are on
the ground place cardboard
under them to prevent
rotting.
What
should
we
be
planting
in
Northland
now?
Sow basil, coriander, dwarf
beans,
beetroot,
celery,
Chinese cabbages, carrots,
leeks, lettuces, radishes and
rocket.
With autumn approaching
we need to preserve produce
for the winter – either bottle
or freeze.
One of the most versatile
fruit is the tomato. If you
don’t have plenty of your
home grown the roadside
stalls are selling sauce
tomatoes which can be
turned into relish, chutney
and soup (don’t freeze the
homemade tomato sauce!).
Excellent recipes are in the
‘Edmonds Sure to Rise’
Cookbook.
THE HONEYBEE
The most valuable creature
for the small
gardener
right
through to
the
orchardist is
of course the honeybee. New
Zealand’s first bees were
brought here by Miss Jane
Brumby, sister of an early
missionary, and were landed
and liberate in the Hokianga
in 1839. They were the
German Black Bee and had
‘a very bad temper!’. Fifty
years later a Mr Isaac
Hopkins
introduced
the
Golden Italian Bee. I t was
more placid and produced
more honey and was more
resistant to disease. Both
varieties still exist in New
Zealand today – the Black
Bee in the wild, the Golden
Bee in wooden hives – both
are essential for pollinating
plants and fruit trees.
Until next month~ Mr Jo.

ONE LIFE (M)
Friday 29 March 7.30 pm
‘One Life is a 2023 British biographical
drama film directed by James Hawes. It
is based on the true story of British
humanitarian Sir Nicholas Winton as he
looks back on his past efforts to help
groups of Jewish children in German-
occupied Czechoslovakia to hide and
flee in 1938–39, just before the
beginning of World War II. The film
stars Anthony Hopkins and Johnny
Flynn as Sir Nicholas’.

STORYTIME
On Wednesday 22 May we will be taking
part in Simultaneous Storytime, where
people around New Zealand and
Australia gather to read the same book at
the same time. The book will be
Bowerbird Blues by Aura Parker, a
lovely story the tamariki will enjoy, and
will be read out by one of the library
team for all to enjoy. The set time is
2pm, which is our closing time, so we
will be holding it a little earlier. Full
details will be given closer to the time,
but meanwhile mark your calendars!
NEW LIBRARY ROOF
We're still waiting for the kink to be
ironed out of this project (pardon the
pun!), but I am hopeful that by the time I
report to you next month we will have a
starting date, if it's not already underway.
BOOK REVIEWS
Recently, I've read Infinity Gate by
M.R. Carey, the first book in the
Pandominion series. "The Pandominion
is a political and trading alliance
consisting of roughly a million worlds.
But they’re really all the same world—
Earth—in many different dimensions.
And when an AI threat arises that
could
destroy
everything
the
Pandominion
has
built,
they’ll
eradicate it by whatever means
necessary - no matter the cost to
human life." This is a good one for
science fiction readers, I enjoyed it a lot,
and am looking forward to the next book
which is due out later this year.
Transgression by Roger Simpson is the
first book in the Jane Halifax series. Do
either of those names sound familiar to
you? Simpson was a writer for the
"Halifax fp" and "Halifax: Retribution"
tv series and this book carries on where
they left off.
"The
first
murder
is
brazen, violent
and
ritualistic.
Committed
in
the
victim’s
home, the killer
leaves few clues
as
to
their
motive or their
identity. All the
police know is
that
the
perpetrator entered the house ..." The
second book, Resurrection, is on our
shelves too.

SAINT DAVID’S DAY
1ST MARCH
This coming Friday, 1st of March, is St
David’s Day or Dydd Gwyl Dewi Sant
-in Welsh.
Saint David is the patron saint of
Wales. He was born in Pembrokeshire
in southwest Wales about 520AD and
died c600, according to tradition on the
1st March.
He was a leading figure and monk in
the early Welsh Church and founded a
community living a simple, fairly
austere life, which connected the
people of Wales with people in Ireland,
Cornwall, France and the Scottish
Isles. He attracted many followers and
travelled a great deal to preach.
He was made a saint by the Pope in
1123.
Saint David emphasised to people
that doing the little considerate
things often made the biggest
difference. “Gwnewch y pechau
bychain” or “Do the little things” are
considered to be St David’s most
famous words, and
potentially his last and,
in Wales, they can
often be heard quoted
today.
He is buried in St
David’s Cathedral, in
the village (although
officially a city because
of its cathedral) of St
Davids, Pembrokeshire.
To mark St David’s Day many Welsh
people round the world wear one of
Wales’s national emblems -a daffodil
or a leek. In Wales concerts and
parades are also held and some
children, particularly girls, dress up in
national costume. ~ Robin
Robin recommends watching on You
Tube “St. Davids' Story | Cerys
Matthews”.
SAINT PATRICK’S DAY
Bring out your green! St. Patrick’s Day,
observed every March 17,is packed
with parades, good luck charms, and all things
green. St. Patrick was a real person, but some of
the traditions associated with him and the
holiday are actually myths. For instance, you’ll
often see the four-leaf clover on St. Patrick’s
Day. However, according to legend, Patrick
used a three-leaf clover, or shamrock, as part of
his teachings.

Review: In pursuit of the real
Charles Upham, VC & bar.
Upstart Press, Takapuna 368 pages
In searching out the character of citizen
soldier Charles Upham, biographer Tom
Scott searches for himself and what
defines a New Zealander.
Scott confesses a fascination for the 1962
Upham biography Mark of the Lion
which at high school was passed hand to
hand like a war comic. That biography
had only appeared after wartime contacts
pressured the reclusive North Canterbury
farmer whose reputation and gaze
commonly reduced strangers to silence.
Writer Ken Sandford, a Hamilton lawyer,
thought Upham only took joy in the book
when publishers wanted it trimmed-"I'm
sure he would have been delighted if
they'd asked for it to be reduced by 100
percent," he said at the time.
Not addled by the sex and worry tales
that dominate screens from breakfast to
bedtime now, Scott ached to comprehend
the only combat soldier to attain "the
holy grail" of UK military medals. a
double Victoria Cross.
"The enigma of Charles Upham gripped
me when I first read Mark of the Lion
and it fascinates me still," Scott writes.
In May 1941 on Crete, the ancient home
of the Labyrinth, the Minotaur and the
"evil eye",' Charlie' won his first 'VC'.
Citizen battalions, with accoutrements
reduced due a hasty imperial withdrawal
from Greece, inflicted heavy losses on
elite German paratroops and convinced
Berlin not to undertake airborne assaults.
Reading forward from Chapter Nine on
Crete, I relished Scott's river tide of
admiration and respect for Charlie. When
near the close, I turned to Chapter One to
discover with Scott why a farm valuer
who disliked school became a legend.
MOTIVE
Was Upham a cold killing
machine? What drove him?
Did he have friends? How
was he raised? Why did he
use Māori in greeting friends
by letter?
Very clearly, Scott finds, Mr
Charles Upham [1908-1994]
detested
the
limelight.
Medals pinned on him were
for all who fought with him.
for all who fell and all who
floundered.
When he was promoted from
sergeant, his West Coaster
volunteers
called
him
'boss' rather
than 'sir'.
As
Scott
digs,
he
comprehends
why 'the big
raw-boned
bastards who
wore shorts
in all sorts of
weather"
impressed his
Irish
father ..." and
didn't lord it
over the locals like some of the other
occupation troops [in post-war West
Germany].'
NO PREJUDICE
His dad had recalled when a barman
refused to serve a Māori soldier ..."they
took the place apart...and when UK
military police came running ..."the
Kiwis kicked the snot out of them as
well. Then, as casual as you like, they
strolled next door and ordered another
round. Jesus, it was impressive."
"It was straight out of the Charlie Upham
playbook, " comments Scott, " ...bullying
and bullies needed to be confronted and
challenged head on. Intolerance would
not be tolerated. Mad dogs needed to be
shot!"
...
Note: Tom Scott, an immigrant lad from
Fielding has rubbed shoulders with
prominent
Kiwis
in
roles
as
parliamentary
reporter,
scriptwriter
[Footrot Flats, Rage], cartoonist and
playwright. In his 50s he met and
conferred with another local hero
Edmund Hillary.
Fine book. Copies in the Kaiwaka and
Dargaville libraries. Have a read. ~ HP
