And KAIWAKA BUGLE
The Kaiwaka Media Group held their annual
meeting after the publication of the February issue.
Special thanks was extended to Four Square, Molly and Ben
Steiner, for the front cover donation. This is a continuation
of what the Jaques Family started many years ago.
The publication monthly seems to be quite adequate in the
present climate.
Being a volunteer group we are a charity organisation but
the meeting decided to make a one-off donation to the
Kaiwaka Sports Association of $500 and another to their
Top of the Rock event of $500.
There is always room for folk to join our production team -
working together as a group to produce the Bugle is a
wonderful opportunity for fellowship which we all enjoy.

WEATHER
FEBRUARY
I thought January was a dry month
compared to what we were used to over
the last couple of years, but then along
came February.
A lovely warm month (bordering on
being too hot) with very little rain.
Derek recorded a maximum of 35
degrees at his place.
At our place I recorded only 32mm of
rain over 7 days.
Derek recorded in the Hakaru Valley
30.5mm of rain, also over 7 days.
The least rain I have recorded for
February was in 2020 with only
7.5mm over 3 days.
The most recorded was of course last
year (2023) with 702mm, which
wasn’t only thanks to cyclone Gabrielle
giving us 285mm, but later in the
month, on the 25th when we had a
weather bomb, giving us another
318.5mm.
Take care everyone and be patient when
needing to travel to Whangarei.
Cheers, Karen

LINKING HANDS
OPEN LETTER TO OUR RURAL COMMUNITIES
- REQUEST FOR VEHICLE REPLACEMENT
This is an open letter to our local
communities spanning the Eastern Parts
of Kaipara, from the Matakohe area,
Paparoa,
Maungaturoto,
Kaiwaka,
through to Mangawhai and up through
the Bream Bay areas.
Linking Hands Incorporated (Health
Shuttle Service) has been serving this
area with a free shuttle service to and
from medically related appointments
for the past 16 years. We've grown
from utilising volunteers' own cars and
one shuttle van to now having a fleet of
8 vehicles spanning a vast rural area.
The service has been sustained by small
grants
and
generous
donations from clients,
for
which
we
are
immensely grateful.
Maintaining
these
vehicles
at
a
high
standard of safety and
roadworthiness comes at
a significant cost. They
require periodic replacement due to
high mileage and the toll of wear and
tear. Sadly, in recent weeks, we've had
to retire two vehicles as they are no
longer fit for purpose. Additionally, we
have other vehicles that will require
replacement soon. Securing funds for
vehicle replacement is particularly
challenging for us, given the limited
avenues available for such specific
funding.
Therefore, we've chosen to reach out to
our communities, including businesses
and the public sector, even if you
haven't used our service before. Your
support now ensures that this vital
service remains available
for all, including yourself
should the need arise in
the future. We are seeking donations
specifically for the replacement of
vehicles before they reach their 'used by
date'.
This free service is indispensable for
our area, especially since there is no
regular public transport available.
With the population increasing across
the regions we cover, the demand for
our assistance is growing. To ensure we
can continue serving our community
safely, we've begun the process of
replacing vehicles, but
our funds are dwindling.
Your support is crucial
for us to continue
reaching as many clients
as possible. If you're
able
to
contribute
towards the purchase of
a vehicle, you would
play a vital role in sustaining this
essential service.
Donations can be made by either
dropping off a contribution at our
Maungaturoto office at 131 Hurndall
Street or by contacting our office for
our bank details to make a donation
online. (09 4318969)
On behalf of the Linking Hands Board
Members and the Administration Team,
we extend our heartfelt gratitude for
considering this request. Your support
ensures that this vital service remains
operational for our community.

TUESDAYS
The Club has decided that
we should meet twice a
month, on the second and
fourth Tuesdays from
March onwards. This will
give members a little
more free time to take part in
community activities that they choose.
SHAUN HOLLAND and PEST
FREE PENINSULAS
In the middle of February,
we had the chance to share
a dinner meeting with
Paparoa Lions. We feel that
there are avenues in which
we can support each other,
especially as we both have
a community focus. At this
meeting we were fortunate
to hear from guest speaker,
Shaun Holland (pictured),
who is involved in the Pest
Free Peninsulas program.
Shaun was initially inspired by the
work done by Jim Rowlands and fellow
workers in the Paparoa area and from
that developed a passion for improving
the environment. He works with local
groups and landowners with support
from NRC and KDC. Since 2018 he has
voluntarily worked on 400 properties
(each requiring a unique approach) and
owners are encouraged to be part of the
approach. Shaun had on display the
common pests that he was aiming to
eradicate. Interesting to note that a
pair of rats can produce 2,000
descendants in a year. He did mention
that people think a bush area is healthy,
but many of these areas are devoid of
bird life, something he is hoping to
improve. The kereru are hugely
important for the regeneration of native
bush because of the seeds contained in
their droppings.
Shaun has also noticed an increase in
the time kaka are staying in the area. In
2018, their stay was only for one
month. This has now extended to 9
months in some areas. To continue the
work that has been done already, Shaun
believes there needs to be long-term
planning and good record keeping. He
also said that community voice is
important. One hint for keeping
possums away from fruit trees is to set
traps, baited with flour and brown
sugar, on the edge of orchards, as this
pest will be attracted to them before
entering the orchard.
JAIME in BELGUIM
We have had a further update from
Jaime, who has now been in Belgium
for two months. Her host family has
taken her to Bruges and Ghent where
she found the architecture
really incredible. She has
also visited Binche where
there was an orange
festival where oranges
were thrown into the
crowd. Jaime and her host
family left the area with
two bags full of oranges. In
the area where she is
living, Bastogne, they have
also had a three-day
carnival which she really
enjoyed. Jaime has also enjoyed
touching base with fellow exchange
students at Rotary meetings she has
attended. She is now also involved in
Scouts where she experienced her first
snow fall. We have been fortunate to
have a number of photos that Jaime has
sent with her email. She is now looking
forward to the days getting longer.
MANGAWHAI ROTARY CLUB
During the past month we have been
visited
by
Grahame
from
the
Mangawhai Rotary Club. It is good to
hear about the success of their sailing
venture and they now have 24 boats
which they can use to train youngsters.
Some of our number were able to join
them at their Prizegiving on the 17th
March.
Our club continues to look for avenues
in which we can be involved in our
local community. While Piroa Falls is
difficult to access at the moment, we do
have Nikau Grove which we can
continue to nurture. If you haven’t
visited this area in Whaka Street, it is
now a good time to do so. There are a
number of native trees in the area, but
the Queen of the Block is the kauri
tree.

MAUNGATUROTO COUNTRY CLUB
STRATEGIC PLANNING MEETINGS
The committee has engaged a facilitator to review where the MCC is
now and where it will be in the future.
And over the past few weeks we have several meetings with members
of the MCC, the Associated Clubs of the MCC and the public so that
we can form a plan for the club.
Thank you to all those that have participated in the meetings and for your
valuable time and input.
We have spent a lot of time looking at the club’s strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats/risks regarding the facilities, governance and
management, programmes and services, marketing and communications.
We have also looked at critical challenges, membership, finances, club values
and the long-term strategy.
All this has provided us a lot to chew over and has highlighted plenty of areas
that we are working through. Watch
this space and on our Facebook and website pages for more information.
The current vision in the constitution is ‘To provide facilities to be the venue of
choice for sporting social, recreational and community educational needs
which will assist to promote and foster opportunities for the people of
Maungaturoto and the lower Northland region’.
One of the things we are looking at to align with the strategic plan going forward,
taking on board the SWOT analysis and feedback is reviewing the vision to ‘To
be the pride of Maungaturoto – a modern, progressive club that is meeting a
range of community needs. And the purpose to ‘A club that provides
facilities and services where people can gather, meet, socialise and
participate in sports, arts and cultural activities’.
We look forward to updating you with more of plan going forward .
The name SWOT is an acronym for the four parameters the tool examines:
Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats.

GARDENING for the
YOUNG & OLD
Autumn
is
here,
the
mornings are a little cooler.
However
the
soil
temperature is still great for the
usual vegetable plants and herbs.
In the herb garden include chives,
chervil, cress, dill, marjoram,
mustard, parsley sage and thyme.
At this time of the Gardening
Calendar flowering fruit trees e.g.
apple, plum ,peach, nectarine and
citrus need fertilising. A general
fertiliser is fine but to get good
blossom and bud set in spring these
plants need sulphate of potash. New
trees and shrubs you plant now will
have time for the roots to settle
while the soil is still warm; they can
establish during the winter ready for
an early Spring explosion of new
growth!
Soil pH
I found an interesting article in the
NZ Gardener March/April 2001
dealing with soil pH*. Soil pH is a
measure for determining the acidity
(sourness) or alkalinity (sweetness)
of the soil - working on a scale of 0
to 14 = anything below 7 is acidic, 7
= neutral and above 7 = alkaline.
Most plants grow best in slightly
acid to neutral soil (pH 6-7),
although some rhododendrons prefer
more.
Soil pH influences plant growth by
altering the availability of nutrients.
Where can a pH Tester be
acquired? Most Garden Centres
will have them.
A low pH can be raised by applying
lime - apply Autumn or Spring;
High pH - try adding sulphur, iron
sulphate or peat to lower the pH.
Picking Plums: You may remember
that excellent veterinarian John
Troost of Waipu.
He devised this
gadget (pictured) to
pick hard-to- reach
plums and other
fruit: Open a can
lid 3/4; empty; cut
off the opened part
with tin snips; turn
the
small
remaining
flap
slightly into the
inside - it has a sharp edge that will
act as a cutter; tie the tin to the end
of a long pole - this bamboo is ideal.
Manoeuvre the open end of the can
over the fruit, a slight pull sideways
and downward will separate the
plum from its stem. The plum falls
into the tin can!
Until next month, great gardening!

EASTER EGGS
Eggs represent new life and rebirth, and
it's thought that this ancient custom
became a part of Easter celebrations. In
the medieval period,
eating eggs was
forbidden during Lent
(the 40 days before
Easter) so on Easter
Sunday, tucking into an
egg was a real treat!
EASTER
The PASSION FLOWER
So many things about this flower
remind us of the Easter story. The
flower really comes from the hot
countries of South America where it
grows wild. The sort that grows in this
country is smaller. It is a climbing
plant.
This type has ten petals - creamy with
a very slight green tinge. The flower is
about 5-6 cms across. This represents
the halo, or the glory of Christ.
The coloured threads inside the
flower represent the crown of thorns,
the white tint represents the purity of
Christ and the pale blue represents
Heaven.
The tall column in the centre of the
flower is the seed box or ovary and
represents the pillar of the Cross.
There are five stamens which
represent the soldiers’ hammers. The
five antlers at the top of the stamens
are the five wounds of Christ.
The three styles at the top of the seed
box represent the nails with which
Christ was nailed to the Cross.
The rather pointed leaves remind us of
the soldiers’ spears.
The tendrils with which the plant
climbs remind us of the whips with
which Jesus was beaten.
The flower blooms for only three
days and these represent the three years
that Jesus had to do His work here on
earth.
The name 'passion flower' refers to
the passion of Jesus and the genus
therefore has a particular relevance
at
Easter.
Spanish
Christian
missionaries adopted the unique
structure of the plant as symbols of
the last days of Jesus and especially
his crucifixion.

BOOK REVIEWS
I've recently read Dark
Deeds Down Under
edited
by
Craig
Sisterson.
It's
an
anthology (collection)
of crime and mystery
short
stories
by
Australian and New
Zealand authors. I've
found short stories in general over the
years to be unsatisfying - they tend to
feel like they end too soon, that they've
been cut off just to make the right
length. This book was so different!
Each story felt complete within itself,
and I loved it - to the point where once
I'd finished, I looked up some of the
authors new to me in our library
catalogue, and placed holds on a stack
of titles, which I'm now working my
way through. The second book in this
series has just been published and will
be on our shelves soon.
The Rush by Michelle Prak was also
an excellent read. "
Some threats are
closer
than
they
appear... The first drops
start to fall when Quinn
spies the body. With no
reception and nothing
but an empty road for
miles, does she stop to
help or keep driving to
safety? Back at the
iconic
country
pub
where
Quinn
works,
Andrea
is
sandbagging the place in preparation for
heavy rains. …"
This book pushed some
buttons for me, and I had to put it down
and walk away at one point. It wasn't
really bad, just some behaviour that I've
been caught up in before and hate
people doing that. I needed to think
about something else for a while and
came back to it the next day and
finished it. Other than that, an excellent
story with surprise twists, and I am
looking forward to more from this
Australian author.
See you in the library! ~Wendy

A PUBLIC BUS
SERVICE
There is a petition for public transport
running from Wellsford to Te Hana,
Ōruawharo, Kaiwaka, Hakaru and
Mangawhai and returning.
The community needs a bus - we need
this service for Gold Card members,
children for sports in Wellsford and
Mahurangi and young ones wanting to
start work in areas like Warkworth or
Wellsford who don't have a car yet.
All we need is seven hundred
signatures
from
Kaiwaka
and
Mangawhai to go ahead.
I have approached all communities, all
involved are asking for it.
There are eight petition books
circulating: Kaiwaka at Kate's Place,
Mangawhai at Bennetts Health Shop,
the Mangawhai Golf Course and
Bowling Club and Te Whai Trust.
There is a book circulating around
family member's in Oruawharo.
The petition will be put forward to
Ritchies by one of their workers.
This will go ahead, if we all pull
together.
