74th LOCAL SHEEP DOG TRIALS
Rain on day one didn’t dampen the spirits of competitors and dogs at the annual Molesworth Sheep Dog Trial in Kaiwaka
on the 12th and 13th April, it did mean a bit of a slow start, but competitors and judges kept things moving meaning
across both the Friday and Saturday there was over 60 heading dog runs, for the huntaway dogs it was just under 30.

WEATHER
MARCH
I am running out of ways to describe
what lovely calm and enjoyable
weather we are having. I trust
everyone had a safe and Happy Easter
and didn’t eat too much chocolate.
The Autumn has started with certainty,
giving us crisp cool mornings and then
beautiful clear sky days to follow. The
leaves on the trees are now starting to
show their beautiful autumn colours.
We had 12 days of moisture during
March and that moisture gave us
42.5ml, just enough to keep the garden
fresh.
The highest rain recording I have
had for March was in 2007 with
362ml.
The lowest recording for March was
in 2005 when we got 13.5ml.
Derek, just a few K’s away in Hakaru
recorded 45ml over 15 days.
I went up over the Brynderwyns over
the Easter break and checked out the
great work being done. The poor
waterfall was looking quite depleted of
water (nothing to do with the road
works) with only a trickle coming
down. It hasn’t been that slow for over
a couple of years now.
Take care all, Karen
GARDENING for
YOUNG & OLD
MAY
is
still Autumn when the
brassicas crops e.g. cabbage,
cauliflower, Brussel sprouts, broccoli,
Chinese cabbage, bok choy can be
planted - give them a dressing of
general fertiliser and water in.
Herb plants should have had a healthy
prune by now to encourage beautiful
vigorous growth in the Spring.
Plant out your garlic cloves - 3-4 cm
deep in well prepared soil, allowing at
least 5-6 cm between plants. Young
shoots will appear in a few weeks.
CROP ROTATION
It is sound practice to rotate crops so
that no crop is planted in the same
piece of ground for two successive
years. Two main reasons - firstly,
different crops take different amounts
of food from the soil (leaf vegetables
use large amounts of nitrogen) and
secondly rotation prevents the build up
of pests and diseases.
A simple method of rotation is to
divide the veggie garden into 3 parts -
Year One in Section One grow root
crops (potatoes, carrots); Section Two
for leeks, onions, peas, beans, celery;
Section Three for the brassicas
(cabbage, broccoli, etc and other green
crops. Year Two the three Sections of
crops are shifted around, and again for
Year Three.
This system restore the feeding value
of the three parts of the veggie garden
by addition of varying amounts of
compost and fertiliser.
COMPOST HEAP
Cold weather has a slowing down
effect on the organisms in your
compost heap or bin. It is important to
insulate your compost -use old carpet,
felt or thick cardboard - so the
organisms carry on working.
WATERPROOF ROOF
Compost heaps need to be moist but
not sodden, if too wet and cold they
will become airless and organism
activity will cease.
Until next month
enjoy your gardening~ Mr Jo.

SKATE PARK
SKATE PARK
After a successful and informative public
meeting it is now time to move to the
next stage which is Resource Consent and the actual plan
for the skate park portion of McClean Park 2022.
This project is estimated to cost around $600,000 to achieve
the basic build but the design will allow for further
expansion as time and money allow. We are open to
donation/sponsorship from Businesses or Private and these
will be received with gratitude and in return we will
promote all businesses who donate /sponsor.
LANTERN FESTIVAL MATARIKI
As Matariki is coming up soon and the response we
received last year from our first Lantern Festival we will be
running another one this year. This time in conjunction with
the Kaiwaka Sports Association. It is to be held on Sunday
23rd June. Starting late afternoon at KSA with live music
lots of fun games for the young and to enjoy. We will also
hope to have food carts there as well. It will the end with
the lantern walk around town back to KSA. More
information to come in the near future. Help to make this a
roaring success and it will become an Annual Event,
something the children will look forward to.
For more information on the festival contact us by email at

If you wish to join Kaiwaka Can we welcome all and
membership is just $10. The more hands we have the lighter

it’s all about.
Sheep Dog Trials really are a NZ
farming icon, with huge history, it’s
great to share them with people from
all walks of life.
Congratulations to the winners and
place getters at the event, great to see
many members of our local and
neighbouring clubs feature often.
Neville Child took out the double in the
heading events (winning the short head
and yard, as well as the long head),
with Finn, firmly cementing his place
as top heading dog in the Northland
Centre. Roddy Thompson and Tone
won the zig zag hunt, and like Finn,
Tone is once again the top huntaway in
the North.
The
club
always
welcomes competitors
from far afield, this year
was no different with
travellers
from
Taumarunui,
Tuakau
and the far north. It was
also great to see some
young women running
dogs and getting some
great results, well done
local Hanna Long and
congratulations to Leah
Southee.
The club is incredibly
grateful to farm owners
of the dog trial grounds, the Paton
family, and their staff, that allow us to
go on farm and basically take over for
a week. It was commented by
numerous competitors how high
quality the sheep were, thank you to
Oneriri Station and the team for the use
of the sheep over the trial.
Big thanks to the workers across the
event, the set up and pack down team,

STRATEGIC PLANNING
Over the past month a number of us
have attended the Strategic planning
meetings
for
the
Maungaturoto
Country Club, to which, like many
groups in our community, we are
affiliated. As the Club has been in
existence for some time, we have been
discussing what might be the best way
forward for both the Country Club and
the community. We are encouraging
our members to attend the AGM on the
21st May. At this time we can hear the
proposals for the way forward and also
assess how we can support the Club in
the coming years.
MCSWEENEY BAND
We had our first fundraiser of the year
last month, the McSweeney band.
Their music was great as usual, and we
certainly enjoyed Marian Burns
playing of the fiddle. It is almost as
though she can make it talk. On the
dance floor there was a mix of
traditional dancing – waltz, two-step
etc as well as some sharing their line-
dancing ability. We really appreciated
the effort that the kitchen made to
ensure everyone was fed, even though
some hadn’t booked in.
If you haven’t tried Jane’s menu, you
should visit on a Thursday or Friday
night to enjoy one of her dishes, and
her desserts are to die for. The kitchen
is open from 6pm to 8pm and bookings
are not necessary. We also appreciated
having the bar open as that meant that
while we had to get a licence, the
serving of drinks was taken care of.
After expenses were paid, we made a
profit of $1,550. We are thinking of
having something similar later in the
year, but this time we will have more
of a country focus.
ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION
Once again, we have been invited to
join other schools from lower
Northland for the Road Safety
Education day in Wellsford for Year
12 students. More of this next month,
but this is an activity we have been
involved in for a number of years. The
information
presented
makes participants think
not
only
of
the
implications
when
driving a car, but also the
responsibilities
people
have as passengers.
ANZAC DAY
Anzac day will see us laying wreaths at
both the 6am service in Maungaturoto
as well as the 10.30am service in
Matakohe. While there are other
services in our area, I have traditionally
gone to these two as their format is
quite different and the timing works
best for me.
CLUB MEETINGS
As mentioned last month, we will be
having two regular club meetings each
month - on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays
at the Maungaturoto Centennial
Hall at 6pm. These will continue to be
catered for by Otamatea High School
DOE and Netball alternately. This
gives these teams a chance to do some
extra fundraising and they are
effectively guaranteed at least $200 a
night. We have now decided to have an
Executive meeting on the first
Thursday of each month at the Country
Club. This will give us a chance, after
the meeting, to mix and mingle with
others who come in for a meal.

I DIDN’T RAISE MY SON TO
BE A SOLDIER
Written in 1914 the song gives the
lament of a lonely mother whose son
has been lost in the war:
“I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and
joy”
She comments on the irony of war
being between different mothers' sons,
killing each other with muskets.
Conflict between nations should be
resolved by arbitration, not by the
sword and the gun. Victory is not
enough to console a mother for the loss
of her son, and the blighting of her
home. War would end if all mothers
said they would not raise their sons as
soldiers. Ref. Wikipedia

I DIDN’T RAISE MY SON TO BE A
SOLDIER
Verse 1
Ten million soldiers to the war have gone,
Who may never return again.
Ten million mothers' hearts must break
For the ones who died in vain.
Head bowed down in sorrow
In her lonely years,
I heard a mother murmur thru' her tears:
Chorus
I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and joy.
Who dares to place a musket on his shoulder,
To shoot some other mother's darling boy?
Let nations arbitrate their future troubles,
It's time to lay the sword and gun away.
There'd be no war today,
If mothers all would say,
"I didn't raise my boy to be a soldier."
Verse 2
What victory can cheer a mother's heart,
When she looks at her blighted home?
What victory can bring her back
All she cared to call her own?
Let each mother answer
In the years to be,
Remember that my boy belongs to me!
Repeat Chorus 2x
Lyrics per original sheet music written
by Alfred Bryan with music by Al
Piantadosi in 1914Ref. Wikipedia

NORTH HAVEN HOSPICE
Albie Paton of The Den Maungaturoto, recently handed over
the keys to a new Haval for the use of North Haven Hospice
community nurses and doctors, our Family Support Team and
our Te Tumu Herenga Waka. This incredible donation is a
welcome asset to the North Haven Hospice vehicle fleet and
we are very humbled and hugely appreciative! We have 10
community nurses helping people, their families and whānau
nearing the end of their life. Thank you so much Albie and the
team for thinking of us and our mahi!
KAIWAKA’S TOA HENDERSON
From Shearing Sports New
Zealand:
“The big one at
Masterton may have eluded
Northland
shearer
Toa
Henderson again, but while
missing out on a place in the
Golden Shears Open final he
did shear in 22 other finals,
won 13 of them, was runner-
up in another six, and was
Shearing
Sports
New
Zealand’s No 1-ranked Open
shearer for 2023-2024.
One
of
about
500
competitors in shearing and
woolhandling finals at 57
competitions throughout the
country from the end of
September to the start of
April, Henderson chased 24
Open titles at 20 venues,
spanning the 1800kms from
Kaikohe in the north to Gore
in the south.
He qualified for all the finals,
except the season-opening
New
Zealand
Merino
championship in Alexandra
and the Golden Shears Open
in Masterton.
Along the way he won both
the South Island and North
Island Shearer of the Year
finals,
something
which
Wairarapa gun David Buick
also achieved in 2021, when he ended the season also
ranked No 1 Open shearer nationwide.
Consistently, the 33-year-old Henderson was also the only
shearer to reach all three Open finals at the New Zealand
Shears in Te Kuiti on April 4-6, his win in the Friday-night
North Island Shearer of the Year final being followed by
second placings 24 hours later in the New Zealand Shears
Circuit final and NZ Shears Open championship.
Henderson, who was No 1-ranked Intermediate shearer in
2006-2007 and runner-up in the 2007-2008 Senior rankings
to brother Tane, before spending about 10 years in
Australia, has had 32 Open wins since his first at
Warkworth in 2019.
But he’s not easing back on the throttle yet, when asked if
he would be doing it all again next summer: “Yeah. Keen-
as. I want those big ones.”
Toa with 22 finals, 13 wins, 214pts is the No. 1 NZ Open
Shearer for 2023-2024. Second is Nathan Stratford
(Invercargill)- 17 finals, 7 wins, 161pts; third is Jack Fagan
(Te Kuiti) with 18 finals, 3 wins, 161pts. See Shearing
Sports New Zealand for further placings..

PET PORTRAITS
Angelique Noll - Artist
Pets are often seen as extended family
members, and that’s one of the reasons pet
portraits have become so popular in recent
years. In days gone by, pets hardly ever featured
in art, but now, they’re everywhere. And for
good reason – many people opt for a pet instead
of a baby or fill an empty nest with a new pet.
And some people don’t need an excuse - they
just love animals.
In my years of painting pets, I’ve painted many
dogs, big and small, and cats, but also horses,
cows, guinea pigs and rabbits – all with a very
special place in someone’s heart.
Here’s Amber – a much loved cow on a
lifestyle block in Tauranga. Even though Amber has butted her person with
her horns, and can occasionally get quite stroppy, she remains a favourite
and will continue to live out her days
in the green pastures of the family farm.
Whiskey is from Northland. A languid, sweet Beardie x Collie, he wasn’t cut
out for a life of helping around the farm. Relaxing in an oversized dog bed, or a
couch if no one’s looking, is more like his idea of a good life.
Although Timmy, from Hamilton, is the most spoilt little dog I’ve ever come
across, he’s super smart too. He has learnt how to ring a bell for his food and
wipe his tiny paws on the carpet before coming into the house.
Sometimes, a pet has already died, or the owners have received bad news from
the vet, and they know their pet won’t be with them for much
longer. Little Angelo here had already died by the time I
painted this portrait of him. It’s a very special way to
remember a loved pet.
Horses are becoming an increasingly
popular subject to paint as well.

that want me to paint, just come and find
