Saturday 18 May:
2024 Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge - Thank you
Lish, Kraig, Mikey, Tim, Keith and
Richard for fantastic effort in this
challenging
fundraising event!
Lish, “Feeling great - I did it in half my 2023 time!”
1100 firefighters raced up the 1103 steps to the top of the
Auckland Sky Tower with 25kg of firefighting equipment
turning the task into a herculean effort. Participants
included New Zealand firefighters, as well as
international competitors from countries all over the
world like Australia, the United States, Chile, Germany
and Croatia.
Founded by firefighter
Tony Scott, who has been
part of both Northland and
Auckland Airport Fire
Rescue Service since 1988,
the event has been raising
funds for Leukaemia &
Blood
Cancer
New
Zealand for 20 years,
growing from $17,500 in
its first year to over
$1 million annually
– nearer $2 million
this year.
And at the moment
our fire truck must
go out the back
door! Strengthened
concrete is replacing
the
cracked
and
weakened concrete at
the front door.

ANATOMY of a FALL (M)
Friday 21 June 7.30 pm
‘The story begins when Samuel is found
dead in the snow outside the isolated chalet
where he lived with his wife Sandra, a
German writer, and their partially-sighted
11-year-old son Daniel. An investigation
leads to a conclusion of "suspicious death":
it's impossible to know for sure whether he
took his own life or was killed. Sandra is
indicted, and we follow her trial which pulls
the couple's relationship apart. Daniel is
caught in the middle.’

WEATHER
APRIL
ANZAC DAY: The weather behaved
itself for the ANZAC dawn service in
Mangawhai at 6am with a fine
spattering of rain starting as the service
ended. The Hakaru service at 10am was
beautifully fine with one or two
menacing clouds but luckily no rain.
There was a large presence of people at
both services to remember our fallen
family members.
For the month of April I recorded
101.5ml of rain over 18 days, most of
which fell on the 12th and 13th giving
us 62ml over those two days. For the
rest of the month the rain was 1-2 or
3ml everyday until the 20th when we
got 17ml.
Derek recorded 88.5ml for the month
over 16 days.
The highest rainfall for April at our
place was in 2017 when we got
224.5ml.
The lowest I have recorded was in
2012 when we got a mere 28.5ml.
I noticed the wild ducks left the
property for a couple of weeks but as
soon as the weather started turning
cooler, they were back again, as they
know full well that shooting season is
only a few days away and our dam is a
safe haven for them. That’s about it for
now. Take care all, Karen

NEW PRIEST IN
CHARGE
The good news is we now have a new
Priest in Charge, Rev Stan Pilbrow.
Rev Stan has come south (over
Pilbrow’s Hill!) from Kerikeri. and will
share his time between Mangawhai
Mission District and Paparoa Mission
District, covering the Mangawhai,
Kaiwaka, Maungaturoto, Paparoa and
Whakapirau Anglican churches. He will
be based at the vicarage in Mangawhai.
The other piece of good news is that
each service will now be a Eucharist
service.
To accommodate Stan’s schedule, St
Paul’s Anglican service time will now
be 11.00am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays
in the month. Stan will take a 9.30am
service at Christ the King, Mangawhai
then travel to Kaiwaka.

This week marks the start of the
2024 Annual Kiwi Call Count
Survey across the country.
We are proud to play a role in this
across the local area with a group of
awesome volunteers trained to record
the data each year.
In addition, we continue to survey the
area using Kiwi Listening Devices
(KLDs) to help us better understand
kiwi
populations,
locations
and
movements.
Debs and Ian, pictured, placed a series
of devices across Bream Tail Farm to
see if the two already known nesting
areas have resulted in additional
dwelling areas on the farm. If you are
keen to learn a bit more about our kiwi
work, please take a look at the recent

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
From the Senior Leadership Team
NEW PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT
The Otamatea High School Board is
pleased to announce that they have
appointed a new principal. Mr Todd
Malcolm, currently Deputy Principal at
Waiuku College, will start his new
position at Otamatea High School at the
beginning of term 3.
SCHOOL BALL: The senior school
ball will be held in the school hall on
Saturday the 14th of September. The
theme for the ball is "A Starry Night in
Italy". Year 13s will be able to bring
outside partners, and year 12s and 13s
will be given priority to purchase
tickets before these become available to
year 11s. These restrictions are
necessary because of the increased
number of students we now have in the
senior school.
CCTV CAMERAS: This week we
have been replacing and upgrading all
of our CCTV cameras. We have a
comprehensive Camera Surveillance
Policy (all our policies can be accessed
through the school website) that
complies with the Privacy Act 2020.
WILLIAM PIKE CHALLENGE
Students take up the challenge at
Vector WERO Whitewater Park.
This year 30 of our William Pike
students braved the cooler weather,
donned wetsuits and picked up their
paddles for the whitewater rafting and
river crossing outdoor activity.
Students learned about river safety,
how to navigate
rivers solo and as a
group and what to
watch
out
for.
During the rafting
session,
students
learned how to raft
grade 1 and 2
rapids, how to safely exit the
water if a raft overturns and
what to if you are caught in a river
without a raft.
The William Pike Challenge is a year
long programme for our Y7 and Y8
students.
To achieve this award, students must
participate
in
outdoor
activities,
organised
by
co-ordinator
Mrs
Antunovich. They must also complete
20 hours of community service and 20
hours of a passion project (something
new they have never tried before).
This is the 6th year that we are running
this programme at Otamatea High
School. It is all about providing
students with opportunities to step
outside their comfort zones, try new
things and give back to their
communities!
REX TAIT
The Otamatea High community were
saddened to hear of the recent passing
of Rex Tait, who was Deputy Principal
at Otamatea High School 30 years ago.
Many students who knew Mr. Tait
currently work at the school and
remember him fondly. Rex was also a
well-known weightlifter and was a
member of the Whangarei and District
Pipe Band. Our condolences go out to
Rex's family.

WAITANGI
CONFERENCE
Since I last shared with
you, we (Rotary District
9910) have had the most
amazing
District
Conference at Waitangi.
Our logo this year has
been “Create hope in the world”, and all
those who presented showed how they
had contributed to this.
The Conference started with a
presentation by the International
District Governor. He stressed that in
today’s world, there seems to be a
poverty of love, time, understanding
and finances, and we were reminded
that we all needed to share our values
and take time to care for one another.
MANY SPEAKERS
It is difficult to summarize the speakers,
but some of the ones who impressed
me, for different reasons were: Those
who had worked tirelessly in Hawkes
Bay after Cyclone Gabrielle, including
Martha Tainui (originally from
Northland but who has moved to the
Bay); She was supported by many
Rotarians (and others) who spent a
week at a time in the area after
Gabrielle; In many cases the silt was
over the roof of homes so after a
bulldozer had cleared a path, they
would find out where people had their
valuables in their homes and aim to
remove the silt to retrieve them. Martha
was heading up to Wairoa with a group
of 40 people, aiming to strip the interior
of 120 homes so they could be re-
gibbed inside.
A Rotarian from the Bay, who was
heavily involved in the cleanup is now
trying to organize a national body
(Rotary
Disaster
Network
of
Assistance) that will have access to
resources and equipment should they be
needed in the future.
Natanahira
Hirewini
(Crown
Prosecutor in South Auckland) who
was a participant in Rotary Youth
exchange some years ago where he
said, “it was a year in a lifetime and a
lifetime in a year; Judge Greg Davis
(Matariki Courts) who spoke about
changing perception and the need to
change underlying drivers of poor
behaviour. Pat Sneddon (he wrote the
book “Pakeha and the Treaty – why it is
our Treaty too”. He spoke about
kawanatanga
(governorship)
being
applied to all citizens; whakapapa
(survival
and
belonging);
Rangatiratanga (collective concerns for
the other.)
Tawera
Nikau,
pictured, also spoke
to us, not only about
his league career but
also his response to
his situation when he
lost his leg in a motor
bike accident. His
message was, “it is
not what happens to
you that is important,
but how you handle
it.”
As our District stretches up into the
Islands, we also had presentations from
Rotary clubs in those areas. Many had
made use of District Grants to complete
their projects. All of them had a
humanitarian aspect which provided a
much better quality of life for the
citizens.
Free time on the Saturday was spent on
the Waitangi Treaty Grounds attending
a powhiri and then spending time (not
enough) to look at the fantastic museum
on the grounds. I will be going back
when I can allocate more time to do this
facility justice.
Conferences like these reminds me how
fortunate many of us are but also how
life can be improved for many others
when we work together on projects.
If you would like to know any more
about Rotary, please don’t hesitate to
get in touch with any Rotarian or give
me a call – 021 142 0357. ~ Eileen

POSSUM FREE PROBABILITY
The Predator Free Kaipara project is targeting all possums on Kaiwaka's Oneriri
Peninsula as the first pest species to be eliminated there.
Tahiroa Bishop, Pest Free Kaipara Lead with Environs Te Uri o Hau, is working
with Julian McPike and pest control contractors on Puketōtara/Oneriri Station to
"move from suppression to elimination of pest animals".
Mr Bishop says project funding is specifically for possums however the intention
is to remove all mammalian predators (including mice, rats and weasels. The
weasel in the photo was trapped on the Peninsula this week.)
A "buffer zone" includes some of the Kaira Oneriri Biofund Area [Koba]
approaching Rangiora and Kaira Roads from the west.
Local landowners interested in participating may cooperate on suppression
efforts.

GARDENING for the YOUNG & OLD
MAY has been a rather cold autumn
month, as winter begins plant
growth slows to a stop until spring,
so need less water than in the
warmer months.
If you own a glasshouse, you can
enjoy nurturing your plants in a
warm environment – out of season
flowers, fruit and vegetables can be
produced with warm temperatures.
The greenhouse is ideal for raising
house plants such as cyclamen,
orchids, chrysanthemums, coleus
and many types of cacti which thrive
in
the
greenhouse
warm
temperatures.
‘COVER CROPS’:
At this time of the year all vacant
ground should be dug
over and left to allow the
winter
weather
to
‘sweeten’ it. In in our
mid-northern area cover
crops can be sown in
vacant plots of your
vegetable garden. A
cover-crop is a variety of
plants that lift the
nitrogen levels of the
soil, such as lupins, oats,
broad
beans
and
varieties of peas. When these plants
start to flower you can dig them into
the soil or alternatively slash them
down and cover with a paper-based
mulch. Pea straw makes a good
cover mulch.
EARTHWORMS:
If earthworms are rare in your
garden this usually means that the
organic matter in the soil is low. It is
well worth adding to the under layer
some animal manure – sheep or
cow. You can also add autumn
leaves, pine needle and grass
clippings. By next Spring this
should have rotted down. Don’t be
tempted to dig it in too soon as you
are liable to kill the creatures you
are wanting to increase!
WINTER PRUNING:
Late June – you can take hardwood
cuttings from roses, raspberry canes,
thornless b, gooseberries, grapevines
and
many
deciduous
shrubs.
LEAF
RUBBING
CRAFT:
You can get intriguing
designs
by
rubbing
different leaves – place the
leaves vein uppermost on a
flat hard surface, then
place your white paper
over one leaf at a time and
gently rub back and
forward with a crayon.
The leaf pattern will appear on the
paper – for card making or wrapping
paper!
Until next month, all the best for
Winter. ~ Mr Jo

My apologies to anyone caught short by
us being closed for 3 days a couple of

BOOK REVIEWS
I've recently read The Tea Ladies by
Amanda Hampson, which I'm pleased
to say is the first book in a new series.
"They keep everyone's secrets, until
there's a murder... Sydney, 1965: After
a chance encounter with a stranger, tea
ladies
Hazel,
Betty and
Irene
become
accidental
sleuths,
stumbling
into
a
world
of
ruthless
crooks and
racketeers
in search of
a
young
woman
believed to
be
in
danger. In the meantime, Hazel’s job at
Empire Fashionwear is in jeopardy. The
firm has turned out the same frocks and
blouses for the past twenty years and
when the mini-skirt bursts onto the
scene, it rocks the rag trade to its
foundations. War breaks out between
departments, and it falls to Hazel, the
quiet diplomat, to broker peace and
save the firm. When there is a murder
in the building, the tea ladies draw on
their wider network and put themselves
in danger as they piece together clues
that connect the murder to a nearby
arson and a kidnapping. But if there’s
one thing tea ladies can handle, it’s hot
water." The book was a lot of fun, and
I'm now waiting for the second book to
arrive from our suppliers.
Audition by Pip Adam was a bit of a
different read. "A spaceship called
Audition is hurtling through the
cosmos. Squashed immobile into its
largest room
are
three
giants: Alba,
Stanley and
Drew.
If
they
talk,
the
spaceship
keeps
moving; if
they
are
silent, they
resume
growing.
Talk
they
must, and as
they
do,
Alba, Stanley and Drew recover their
shared memory of what has been done
to their incarcerated former selves. Or
are they constructing those selves from
memory-scripts
that
have
been
implanted in them? Part science fiction,
part social realism, Audition asks what
happens when systems of power decide
someone takes up too much room –
about how we live with each other's
violences - and imagines a new kind of
justice." This book was shortlisted for
the 2024 Jann Medlicott Acorn Prize
for Fiction, so I expected it to be a good
read from the outset, and it was.

“FARMING CAN BE RELENTLESS... but we won't change it for anything”
Life on the moors for a family of nine described by mother and fulltime farm worker Amanda Owen.
The Yorkshire hills roll differently from Oneriri, and winters are sharper but this 'life on the moors'
book is a nugget of reality you won't need to sail the skies to realise.
Amanda Owen was basically a land girl [NZ '40s style] when she met Clive in a house with stone
floors and coal fires as a "contract shepherdess". Tied to rural lifestyle by instinct and vet James
Herriot's books she knows a working house where performance is the main thing and animal
medicines are on the mantel.
The family runs a thousand sheep, a small cattle herd, dogs, hens and other animals including a
lovelorn peacock. Their nine children take seriously their roles on the farm. Added to that is their
travellers' rest where walkers retire on the 192-mile Dales Coast to Coast trail.
Frank writing: Not one to take prisoners, Owen speaks what's on her mind. Personal opinions,
achievements and frustrations are aired, and, I get the feeling, the editors just have to follow along.
Local history and neighbourliness are part of her package as is her B&B business.
Worth chasing down.
Here's a good wee backgrounder of her from a few years back - https://www.rnz.co.nz/national/
