Kaiwaka Can and Kaiwaka Sports Assn. teams
hosted the second annual Kaiwaka Lantern
Festival - amazing, happy event - an exceptional
family fun night, with lots of laughter, music,
action and great lanterns. The lanterns were super
creations made by the young folk and carried
around town in the dark. Along with lanterns
there was egg and spoon race, gumboot throwing,
treasure hunt, bouncy castles, silent auction, face
painting and wonderful food plus more ...

WEATHER
MAY
The warm weather is continuing. We
may have had a few cooler days but
not often enough to say that the
temperature has changed completely.
Minimal rainfall at our place over the
month of May is good news. I
recorded 103.5mm for the month of
May over 18 days.
Derek in Hakaru recorded 93mm over
15 days.
The least rainfall recorded at our
place for May was in 2007 with a
recording of 35mm.
The highest rainfall recorded for May
was in (and no-one will be surprised)
2023 with a recording of 324.5mm
over 23 days, for the month.
Duck shooting season was relatively
quiet around our place. The Autumn
leaves have all but fallen and the trees
are looking quite bare. Spring bulbs
are beginning to show their colours
(even though we have only just got
into Winter) and the perfume is lovely.
The grass growth on the farms is
looking good for this time of year.
That’s about all for this month.
Take care all, Karen

COMMUNITY LUNCH
We had another very successful
community lunch at the Good News
Church on Hurndall Street last month
with over 60 attending. Our next lunch
is set for August 7th. This is open to
all ages, so come along to meet with
others and enjoy good company and
good food. The children from Kaipara
Kids were delighted with their own
table where they could build a burger,
with hot chips and tomato sauce and
‘traffic-lights’ jelly for dessert.
There is plenty of parking and our mini
-bus provides transport to and from the
Maungaturoto Retirement Village. We
appreciate very much our wonderful
driver Owen who volunteers his time,
and for the great team who help chef
Damian with everything that needs to
be done to help make the lunch run
smoothly. Most of all we thank YOU
for coming along to make it all
worthwhile.
Board Games
Our first Board Games night was also
a big success with a good number
attending. They had a great time
playing some of the old favourites with
the opportunity to learn new ones. The
Board Games night is on Fridays from
6pm to 9pm at The Community House,
153 Hurndall Street, Maungaturoto.
Games and snacks provided.
FREE SHOPPING TRIPS
The free shopping trips to Whangarei
this month are as follows:
Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 24th July.

GARDENING for
YOUNG & OLD
JUNE:
Now late June and the
first month of winter has been
mild. Days in May were cold, so the June
temperatures have been great. The
downside is that the lawn is still
growing, however so is the pasture – a
bonus for farmers. Listening to and early
morning radio talkback two weeks ago –
a caller in Christchurch had just seen a
mother duck leading ducklings to the
Avon River, and further on in his walk
came across cherry trees in blossom and
some daffodils in flower. Never mind the
seasons make their own time. Back in the
early 1970s I remember it was freezing
cold on September-October and late
lambs were trying to keep warm curled
up in rush bushes.
Planting for June-July:
Vegetables: Try Kohlrabi, Kale, Silver
Beet, Rocket, Mizuna and Winter
Lettuces (choose frilly leafed lettuces as
they are hardier).
At this time of the year try growing
shallots - a member of the onion family.
They are sweet when eaten and like
garlic they can be planted from cloves.
When planting don’t bury shallots too far
down – allow the neck of the bulb to sit
above the soil.
Winter flowering plants for a splash of
wonderful colour in the garden: Try
Pansies, Alyssum and Calendula. Taller
shrubs that are in bloom for the next few
months Camelias, Azaleas and Daphne.
Pruning Programme for June-July:
This will depend on where your garden is
and how busy you are. Plants: Fuchsias
in frost-free areas can be shortened back
to about two-thirds from the tips.
Grape vines need dead and weak growths
removed and strong shoots cut back to
the last two healthy
buds
before
the
permanent wood.
Wisterias need e
shortened back to
firm stems and buds.
Now a blast from
the past: In 500BC
(15th Century BCE
Ref
Wikipedia)
Chinese
gardeners
were
cultivating
Chrysanthemums for sale in their florist
shops. By this time they had developed
them from the wild varieties which had
grown in China from the beginning of
civilisation into blooms with massive
‘heads’ in a multitude of glorious forms
and
colours.
From
China
the
Chrysanthemum was exported to Japan
and then on to Europe!

JUDY EAGLETON
Judy, a longtime and staunch member
of our Kaiwaka Bugle Team, passed
away on Thursday 30 May in Napier.
She and James became part of the

serving for eight years.
As St John EMT and Support Officer
Marj Steiner says, “Judy was dedicated
to whatever she did, and was exact in

RYDA
Since our last report, we have been
involved with RYDA (Rotary Youth
Driving Awareness). About 60 year
12 students from Otamatea joined a
similar number from Rodney, in
Wellsford, to take part in six
modules which are aimed to make
them safer drivers. The object of the
day is to make them think about the
choices
they
make,
and
the
implications of them. One handy tip for
us all is to keep our cellphone in the
glovebox or the boot. This will help
avoid any unwanted distractions from a
call coming through while one is
driving.
ROTARY
INTERNATIONAL
PRESIDENT
I have also had the chance to travel to
Auckland to meet our
Rotary
International
President,
Gordon
McInally,
a
Scot
(pictured right). He is
very impressed with
Cat Levine’s program
in
Te
TaiTokerau,
which is aimed at
improving the mental health of our
primary school children with her
“Think and Be Me” presentation.
This was a District 9910’s initiative
and our RI President has committed to
promoting
it
throughout
other
countries. Our Club is looking forward
to being involved with this program
next year.
SUPPORTING YOUNG FOLK
We are actively involved in helping
both DOE and Netball fundraise as
they
provide
our
fortnightly meals. We
also support the William
Pike challenge in which
Nyree
Antunovich
involves 30 year 7 and 8
students each year to
help grow resilience by
completing
Outdoor
activities,
Community service and taking up a
new hobby.
PRESIDENT TIM MAGILL
From July our new Rotary year
commences,
and
our
incoming
President is Tim Magill. Each
President brings their own “flavour” to
the position, and we look forward to
working with Tim for the following 12
months.
We will be saying farewell to our
Assistant District Governor, Sally
Cargill. Sally lives on the Shore and
her trips to us have been hampered by
frequent road closures, especially over
the past two years. We have
appreciated her persistence in visiting
us (and giving us a catchup on things
Rotary) under difficult circumstances.

REV STAN PILBROW
The Paparoa Mission District
(along with the Mangawhai
Mission District) has been
fortunate to obtain the services of
a new Priest in Charge, Rev Stan
Pilbrow. It will be great to have a
Priest living in our area, being
available for pastoral care, and we
look forward to working with
him.
Stan was born in Whatuwhiwhi
and for 27 years was a regular in
the NZ Army, serving in many
areas and rising to the rank of
lieutenant colonel. Stan believes
that his time in the army involved
teaching,
leadership,
organizational, problem-solving
and logistical skills all of which
he has used and will continue to
use in his life as a minister. He
has worked as a Probation Officer
in Kaitaia as well as working with Corrections in several facilities.
Stan’s ties to Northland are extensive. His iwi is Ngāti Kahu through his
mother; his Pākeha father is from the Bay of Plenty. His later schooling years
were at Taipā District High and Kaitaia College. “The church and karakia were
important parts of Māori rural life, and very few of our life milestones occurred
without prayer, a service or celebration at our marae,” he said. Five years at
Auckland’s College of St John the Evangelist, has also been a powerful
influence on his life. ~ EP

QUAIL ON ONERIRI
PARADISE: About four years ago
, while searching for
a smaller block of land, we left the Pouto Peninsula and
settled on the Oneriri Peninsula. We entered a paradise of
bush, trees and birdlife in comparison with our old home,
where birdlife was scarce due to the predation of feral cats.
With the passage of time our excitement grew as we noticed
a wide variety of birds feeding on our house lawn and then
we spotted three brown quail, we were over the moon!
Down to our Four Square and a big bag of Wild Bird Seed.
Over the next years we’ve seen their babies (we call them
‘bumblebees’ due to their size) arrive and the flocks
growing exponentially.
MANYBIRDS: Today it is not uncommon to see
groupings of 20 -30 quail arriving to be fed. Other
varieties have thrived also, tauho, three types of finches, fan
tails, majestic male and female pheasants, kereru and tuis.
For us, the real bonus recently was watching a young tui
pecking on wind-fall mandarins.
All of this wonder has only been possible due to the control
of feral cats. I would
encourage everyone
to
dissuade
acquaintances from
dumping unwanted
kittens and cats.
They quickly adapt
to become efficient
killers
of
our
birdlife, usually their
prime food source.

UPDATE ON THE STRATEGIC
PLAN
As you may be aware four meetings
were held over an eight-week period in
Feb/March and involved around 100
attendees representing all areas of the
community.
From this we have developed a plan for
the next five years to ensure the club
can continue to provide spaces for
sport, arts and community activities
and events.
The plan addresses critical issues
identified
including
ensuring
a
sustainable
business
model,
commercialising the operations to
provide a return on investment,
employing a manager to support
volunteer effort, investing in building
maintenance and renewal and selling
parts of the land that are not being used
productively.
For more information contact Tina
Holst
maungaturotocountryclub@gmail.com
We encourage all members of the
community to come along to Thursday
or Friday night for a meal and
a drink and get to know fellow
community members.
We Need You!!!!!!
Are you able to Volunteer?
Being a not-for-profit organisation, we
rely on the support and hard work of
our committee and members in the
community to keep the club thriving.
With buildings, grounds, events etc
there is always plenty of work to be
done and we are always on the lookout
for volunteers who can offer help in
any way they can, for example
attending a working bee or working on
the bar.
If this sounds like a bit of you, please

WINTER CATALOGUE
Have you seen the new catalogue yet?
Pick up your free copy from the library
counter. It's full of recommendations
for good reading and information about
the district's libraries.
WINTER ACTIVITIES
Did you know that we have jigsaws
and other games in our library? Some
are ready for you to take away, others
need to be ordered in for you from
other libraries. Search the catalogue at
Enterprise* or come in and talk to us.
DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
We will be doing the next swap at the
end of July. Now is the time to check
the Dargaville shelves in our library for
anything you want to borrow, before
they disappear. They don't need to be
returned in time for the swap.
BOOK REVIEWS
I've read some good books lately,
including these ones from series that
we have in the library - From Cornwall
With Love by Cressida McLaughlin,
the 8th book in the Cornish Cream Tea
series,
Come
Death and High
Water by Ann
Cleeves, the 2nd
book
in
her
George & Molly
Palmer-Jones
series, and The
Running Grave
by
Robert
Galbraith, the 7th
book
in
the
Cormoran Strike
series. They've all
been good reads
that I have no
hesitation
in
recommending to
you. With each,
do start at the
beginning of the
series if you've
not read them
before; we have
them all in our library.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
