100 YEARS IN KAIWAKA!!
On August 17, 1924 Jaques General Store in Kaiwaka was opened
and it’s still going strong 100 years on in 2024. It is the first of 223
Four Squares in New Zealand to reach the hundred year milestone!
Owners Molly and Ben Steiner say that is a tribute to the Jaques
family who owned and operated the Four Square on the corner site for
96 of those 100 years. “They made our local Four Square the hub of
the community where everyone has shared many happy memories and
they have been there in the hard times as well. We are privileged to be
the new owners / caretakers of the legacy that was started a century
ago,” says Molly.
And they want the whole community to come along and enjoy a huge
celebration on Saturday August 17 2024. “It runs from 1– 3 pm in the
Store car park and we have music, food, lots of fun activities for the
kids and 100 giveaways that must go on the day. We really want to
thank everyone who supports us and has supported the Four Square
over its long history.
Jaques / Kaiwaka Four Square continues to be a family run
community store. “And we couldn’t be more proud,” they said. “We
are actually shutting the store for the two hours so all our staff and
community can have some fun, we want to celebrate and say ‘Here’s
to a hundy’, and we’re super excited to be part of the next hundred.”

WEATHER
JUNE
June was quite a settled month rain
wise. At our place I recorded 146mm
of rainfall over 16 days.
While Derek in Hakaru recorded
158mm over 19 days. Derek also
recorded that the average nighttime
temperature in June was warmer than
the average nighttime temperature in
May.
We went to Whangarei last week and it
was so nice being able to check on the
Brynderwyn waterfall. It looks a bit
different now but at least it is still there
and flowing nicely. NIWA predictions
for July is that the first half of July will
be cold and dry, with the second half
being warm and wet. I prefer the cold
and dry.
The Spring bulbs are almost finished
and now the Orchids are coming out.
Not a lot else to report so until next
month.
Take care all, Karen

Celebrating 25 Years of
Seasonal Forecasting
July 2024 marks a special anniversary
for NIWA - 25 years of issuing our
Seasonal Climate Outlook.
The Seasonal Climate Outlook (SCO) is
one of NIWA’s most popular services.
It provides temperature, rainfall, soil
moisture and river flow predictions for
the coming three months.
The first SCO was released in 1999,
when computers still used dial-up
internet and the first mobile phone with
digital camera (at a measly 0.11
megapixels) wouldn’t be sold until the
following year.
Back then, those predictions were
published on a 4-page leaflet that was
sent by post to the media and anyone
else who wanted to subscribe.
Today, the SCO is accessed online and
generally covers more than 4 pages. It
is also supported by an extensive code
base, running on NIWA’s powerful
supercomputer that can perform up to
1.4 trillion calculations per second. It is
also a lot more objective, with data
collated from more than 9 general
circulation models (GCMs) worldwide,
and aggregated and tailored for
Aotearoa New Zealand.
SCOs are a statistical summary of the
average weather conditions expected
over a three-month period - think: what
are the chances my heating bill going to
cost more because it will be a colder
winter than last year? Source: NIWA
GRAHAM DOWSON
(GAFFA)
It is with great sadness that we say
goodbye to another Kaiwaka stalwart,
whose family has been in Kaiwaka for
over 165 years.
Graham contributed to the running of
and played in many sports teams in the
Kaiwaka, Hakaru area.
He was a foundation member of the
Kaiwaka Volunteer Fire Brigade when
it was established in 1963.
Graham was a man who was always
willing to assist with community
projects.
Along with his wife Peggy, they raised
a family of 3 on a dairy farm in Hakaru,
before owning a cartage business,
followed by purchasing the Three
Furlongs Hotel and becoming the local
publican for a few years.
Graham and Peggy retired to Marshall
Road where they continued to support
the upbringing of their grandchildren
and great grandchildren.
Gaffa quietly passed away (after a short
illness) on the 28th June 2024 being
almost five years to the day after the
death of Peggy. Graham died 6 days
short of his 88th birthday.
Graham’s family would like to thank
and acknowledge the care, support and
understanding of the community and
local businesses, that was given to
Graham over the last few years.

Kaiwaka’s
annual
Lantern
Festival took place on the
afternoon and evening of Sunday
23rd June 2024.
Attendance this year was up from last
year, with around 600 people in total
visiting the event.
Weather was overcast but without rain,
ensuring that all of the planned
activities could go ahead on dry ground
around the Kaiwaka Sports Association
facilities.
The afternoon featured loads of
family fun: A treasure hunt captivated
youngsters for an hour or so with
around 200 “lucky dip” prizes awarded.
The gumboot tossing competition was
vigorously contested with Cooper Jager
winning the under-6 trophy, throwing
11.5 metres, and Callum Alexander
taking out the 7 through 12 trophy with
his 18 metre throw. The adult class was
led by Greg Campbell with an
astonishing 26-metre throw, captured on camera.
Other competitions opened up to the musical accompaniment of Happy Fish.
Three-legged races were chaotic but thankfully without injuries other than to
dignity. The egg-and-spoon races were also a trifle messy, but not as messy as
the wildly popular egg toss & catch competition that followed…. Prizes won for
all events were donated by local businesses, as were the many offerings on an
instant auction table.
The highlight of the evening had to be the creative lanterns, many of which were
produced by participants at the lantern workshop table on the day. First prize
went to Amara Ashton; prizes for most creative and for best kids’ lanterns were
also awarded.
Moonlight bathed the lantern parade as it wound
around Kaiwaka streets. As the procession returned to
the pavilion Circus Kumarani kicked off their fire
show, drawing a throng of spectators.
Hot drinks, hand warming and marshmallow toasting
at braziers completed the perfect family outing.
Incredibly generous sponsors from all around the
community are too many to list but are mentioned on
the web page at www.lanternfestival.nz.
The date for Kaiwaka’s 2025 Lantern Festival is
tentatively set for Saturday 14 June 2025, and
planning is set to kick off in a few weeks’ time!

OTAMATEA HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
DISTRICT 9910
In the middle of July we
had the chance to be
involved in Auckland,
with the change of
officers for our District
9910. This position is
held for a year and last
year’s DG was Neil Murray, whose
main focus was mental health and
youth.
It is always interesting to hear about the
achievements of the award winners –
projects they have undertaken in their
communities. One initiative that many
clubs
have
been
involved with is the
Healing Gardens in the
new wing of North
Shore Hospital.
Jenn Wong will be our
District Governor for
the coming year, and we
were excited to hear about her plans. As
part of this position, Jenn is expected to
visit all Clubs within her District (32
clubs in all) at least once – quite a feat
considering that the District extends
beyond the top half of the North Island,
through to the Pacific, including
Norfolk Island, Vanuatu and New
Caledonia.
Jenn has set us four priorities to
consider for the year:
Increase our Impact,
Expand our Reach,
Enhance Participant Engagement
and Increase ability to adapt.
She has given some ideas for us to work
on in these areas. The best thing about
having her visit, is so she can get to
know us as a Club, what our aspirations
are for the year and how we can work
together with other Rotary clubs as well
as other community organizations.
DARGAVILLE CLUB
I was able to join Dargaville for their
changeover earlier the same week.
Again, it is great to be able to see the
projects that the Dargaville club has
showcased for the year. A highlight of
the evening was the entertainment
provided by a group from Dargaville
Little Theatre. They had recently
finished a season of the Wizard of Oz
so their items came from that as well as
several items from Grease. It is always
great to see young people performing in
such
a
professional
manner.
Our new President, Tim,
will be back with us later
this month. We are
looking
forward
with
interest to find out how he
sees
us
progressing
through the coming year,
so watch this space.

PAST and PRESENT PRINCIPALS
Dirk Smyth, was farewelled at the end of Term Two - his
last official day as Principal
of Otamatea High School.
On the Friday afternoon
was the inter-iwi haka and

following
which
the
students organised a whole
school haka for Dirk. Dirk has been a stalwart of
the Otamatea High School community, and we
wish him all the best of luck on his next adventure
in China.
The new principal, Todd Malcom, (pictured right)
was welcomed at he beginning of Term Three. He
has been the last 21 years at Takapuna Grammar
school and Waiuku College in a variety of roles,
including Deputy principal and Acting principal,
and says, “I approach every endeavour with a
genuine desire to make a difference. Whether
leading a Kāhui Ako or coaching sports teams, my
journey is marked by a dedication to nurturing both
individuals and collective success. I enjoy the
outdoors, golf and fishing in my spare time. I look
forward to talking with you all and preparing our

RANGIORA ROAD UPGRADE
Development of Rangiora Road park (at the end of Rangiora Road, pictured) is
set to start this week. The first part of the project includes creating car and boat
trailer parking, lighting, installing a public toilet and a proper turning area for
vehicles.
The project team are working to keep some access to the area including the boat
ramp open wherever possible. However there will be times, particularly in the
first part of the work programme, that the wider area including the boat ramp and
beach access will be closed for extended periods to complete the works. During
the works period we do not recommend driving down Rangiora Road with a boat
trailer as there will be no turnaround area available at the end. There will be signs
in place, please help us
spread the message and
tell your family and
friends who normally
use the boat ramp.
The upgrades are funded
by central Government’s
Tourism Infrastructure
Fund
(TIF)
which
supports regions facing
pressure from tourism
growth. The works are
expected
to
be
completed in December.

GARDENING for the
YOUNG & OLD
JULY/AUGUST
What a different temperature
range we have experienced in
early to middle of July. Some
heavy frosts have absolutely
welcomed glorious warm, sunny days.
The forecast as I write is for heavy rain
from the north, but not cold.
A question to ponder: how do we
winter-proof our gardens?
The answer is we must raise the
temperature for the susceptible plants.
When the nights are cold protect your
tender plants with shade cloth blankets
– put the cloth over at night and
remove in the morning.
To protect your citrus remove the
summer mulch so the sun can warm the
soil and if frosts are prevalent soak the
soil around the tree with water
(watering established citrus in mid-
winter can be as valuable to their
survival as watering them in a drought
summer).
Winter is the time to give your
deciduous trees, shrubs and roses a
prune. Remove any crossing or rubbing
branches these will cause problems for
the plants in the future. Cut away any
diseased or dying parts as well.
‘Opening up’ a plant to allow good
airflow will help keep disease and pests
in check.
The Humble Spud
It is winter, don’t forget that staple
food ‘the humble spud’! In the north
potatoes can be grown. They like a ‘full
sun’ position, and once the green leaves
appear need frost protection at night.
They enjoy a light soil that is well
draining and is slightly acid. The pH
should be between 5.8 – 6.5. As the
potato tops grow (the part above the
soil) mound them up with extra soil or
straw. Do this every two to three
weeks.
Potatoes produce their best crops when
they are kept well-watered throughout
their growing season – especially
during
and
immediately
after
flowering. When the plant is creating
new tubers, water early in the day so
foliage has time to dry completely
before evening to avoid risk of
diseases. When the leaves turn yellow,
stop watering to allow the tubers to
mature before harvesting.
Potatoes are a powerhouse of essential
nutrients especially with their skins left
on!
The season for hibernation is coming to
an end – one month with a bit of luck.
So you need to start thinking of feeding
of feeding your plants again. If you use
blood and bone, remember it does not
contain potash! Sulphate of potash will
encourage the plants to produce
flowers.
Until
next
month,
great
gardening. ~ Mr Jo

KAIWAKA’S
SAFETY ISLANDS
The ‘safety islands’ in the middle of
the Kaiwaka-Mangawhai Road just
opposite the children’s playground have
been placed for pedestrians crossing the
road, but sadly the arrow markers are
always in for a battering.
The top photo shows the cone
construction as contractors try to repair
the set up again, as in photo two. Photo
three about a week later arrow signs are
rather bent and twisted.
Would a painted zebra crossing work?

KAIWAKA PRIMARY
SCHOOL
Kia ora Whanau and Community,
This week we have a photo of Wendy,
the Kaiwaka Library Librarian giving out
the Duffy books for Term 2. The students
get very excited to be given books of
their own that they get to take home,
keep forever, and share with whanau.
I want to thank the local businesses who
have contributed to help make this a
termly event. Duffy also sends authors to
talk with the children and a theatre group
once a year.
Thank you to our 5 fantastic sponsors for
supporting the Duffy Books programme :

DARGAVILLE BOOK SWAP
This is happening this week. Many
thanks to the library volunteers who
took part in the huge effort of returning
the old books, selecting the new ones,
and getting them all onto the shelves.
Come and check what we have on those
shelves now - there's something for
everyone, and we have them for the
next six months.
BOOK REVIEWS
Have you read a book from our library
recently that you really enjoyed and
want to tell others about? I'd love to
receive a brief review from you! Just a
few sentences about why you liked it is
enough, or you can include a summary
of the plot as well. Write it down on
paper and drop it to the library or email
it
to
kaiwaka.library@gmail.com.
Please include your name, but we can
withhold that from publication if you
wish.
Where to start on what I've read
lately and recommend?! More than
we have room for here, that's for sure.
You can see all of my reviews at

than makes it to this report.
Can You See Me? and Do You Know
Me? by Libby Scott and Rebecca
Westcott are an excellent junior/teen
fiction read about Tally, a young girl
with autism, as she navigates life and
friendships, with the real-life diary
entries of author Libby at that age.
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is the
first book in the
Empyrean series,
and if you like to
have dragons in
your life, you'll
enjoy this tale of
Violet
as
she
enters the Riders
Quadrant to train
as a dragon rider.
Hermit by SR
White is the first
book in the Dana
Russo
series;
Dana
is
a
detective in an
Australian
country town. A
man is found at
the scene of a
murder - a local
man who has been
missing for 15
years. Did he
commit
the
murder?
Where
has he been all
this time? I'm looking forward to more
by this author. And There Should Have
Been Eight by Nalini Singh is another
great thriller by this Kiwi author.
See you in the library! ~Wendy
